Plain Dealer link Dog sacrificed in demonstration at Cleveland Clinic A Cleveland Clinic neurosurgeon sacrificed a dog this week to demonstrate a medical device to a group of salespeople. The doctor induced an aneurysm in the dog's brain so that a device manufactured by Micrus Endovascular Corporation could be deployed. The Clinic confirmed that the session occurred, but a spokesperson said the doctor hosted the demonstration without permission from the hospital's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Though the doctor submitted an application to the committee, its members never reviewed it. If they had, the spokesperson said, they would have rejected the request because the Clinic's policy prohibits procedures on animals for the sole purpose of sales training. The Clinic is reporting itself to the USDA. -- Sarah Treffinger, streffinger@plaind.com

So you make a headline that's not even close to being true to gather attention to the post? "The Cleveland Clinic" didn't sacrifice anything. And the doctor who did so,did it without their permission. Funny, your headline says just the opposite?
But you'll have that from time to time huh?

Employees of Cleveland Clinic are not representatives of the hospital in any way and its as easy as pie to take a dog into a hospital, perform a medical procedure on it, kill it on hospital premises using hospital equipment, and drag a dead dog out for disposal. Happens all the time in your world. Maybe you'd prefer the actual title of the article: "Dog sacrificed in demonstration at Cleveland Clinic" You're right. That's totally different than original LYING title I posted: "Cleveland Clinic just keeps getting better -- sacrifices dog."

I hate when they do stuff like that on animals, but if it's for the better good of and saves the lives of humans, then whatever
I just hate seeing "The doctor induced an aneurysm in the dog's brain so that a device manufactured by Micrus Endovascular Corporation could be deployed."

I assumed they sacrificied the dog by giving it a staph infection on purpose. They've given it to enough Browns players already.
Sorry to hear about the dog though. I'm sure they got the dog from a local pound that was going to put it down anyway. Still.....not the forum.

Pit you're a little full of yourself lately aren't ya ? If you don't like the post then don't read the damn thing and certainly feel free not to respond . Seems like all you want to do lately is find a counterpoint to a post and ague your case. Usually you make a few good points but really ..what purpose does it serve to jack a guy up about his wording of a post ? Did it really upset you that much ? Lighten up buddy it is just a MB.

I could give a rats butt if an animal died to further medical research but as a dog lover it is rough to hear it was done in the name of a sales pitch . I reckon they need to influence the sales weenies somehow and maybe in the end it is necessary but ...still sucks for the dog.

LMFAO if it wasn't the clinic, then why is the clinic reporting itself? The clinic did not give permission for this to take place. But seeing as one it's employees went through with it, the clinic will still end up having some accountability for it.

I actually sell medical devices to surgeons and can tell you that the demontration would not in anyway further medical advancements. I would bet anything on it the the surgeon is a consultant for the company and he only demonstarted the product to increase sales. Nothing more, nothing less.

I have to agree with pit here a bit, as much as it pains me to do so.
Your original title was misleading, and I never understood why people feel to the need to write their own headlines, when it's easy enough and more correct to just post the true headline as the subject. This also helps in searching to find if the article has already been posted if the subject titles are consistent.
But thank you for changing it.

I agree with PIt. The outrage should be at the doctor instead of the Cleveland Clinic.
Dogs are sacrificed at probably 90 percent of the research hospitals in the US every day. Their is probably one on the operating room table next door.
The biggest question I have is how the Doctor procured the dog.
Using dogs in research is fairly common. 99 percent of them are born and bred in a research lab for this purpose, by one or two company. THere is too much backlash to buy them from the pound anymore. Even if the dogs are going to be sacrificed anyway.
But how did this guy get the dog. It most assuradly would not have been through the Animal Care facilities, because all animal orders must be tied to a protocol approved by the Animal Care Review board which the article states never approved the application.
Did he get a dog from the pound or did he use one of his animals tied to his research.
Either way he probably has lost all animal research privliges, most likely for the rest of his life. As no Independent animal care and use commitee will trust him with animals in the future.
Stupid bastards like this make animal research look bad for every one else who does it.

Now onto the article..
The doctor should be reprimanded, but the procedures should be reviewed at the Clinic as well, if he did provide written request in proper time and it hadn't been looked at.
There should be clear policies in place that state what needs to have prior written approval and how long that process is expected to take, so that these things could be processed in a timely manner.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

I believe that those are in place. At least at my institution
We have no timeframe on when he submitted his request and when he performed the procedure. He could have submitted the form the day before he performed the procedure. We just don't know.
I get institutional approval on my protocals in less than a week. Usually 3 days.
But I will agree that the review of protocals needs to be done in a timely manner.
It is just sad that this one idiot broke the rules and it makes all animal research scientists look like the devil incarnate.

Did he get a dog from the pound or did he use one of his animals tied to his research. The local news said last night he bought the dog from a company that provides ranimals for research to medical facilitys. It just said it was a large mutt type dog. I dont care where he got the dog from. Killing a animal for medical research is fine , killing it to demonstate a product to saleman is not. KING

I dont care where he got the dog from. Killing a animal for medical research is fine , killing it to demonstate a product to saleman is not. It would appear then that he ordered the dog under his other research grant and used it for something else. What an idiot. I wouldn't doubt it if he is done with research for life. P.S. It was not a mutt. They do not breed mutts for research. That is all PR spin. IT would have been a beagle. They have been the standard in research for the last 40 years. Just to let you know how serious they take this. The lab that I work in was almost shuit down a couple years before i joined because they were putting in two catheters instead of one like the protocal said. The head RA was fired. And it was not like adding the second catheter put the dog under any undue stress. It was allready under anethesia when the surgery was performed and it never woke form the procedre so it never felt a thing. Use of animals is very strictly regulated. Why this guy is an idiot and should lose his research lab, i cannot help but wonder. Would this even be news if he had used a different research animal: mouse? rat? zebra fish? pig? sheep? it just seems that as a society we put so much more of an emphises on the life of a dog compared to other animals. Heck, Even I have been tempted to say what I work on so that I am not thought of as a dog killer.

A Cleveland Clinic neurosurgeon sacrificed a dog this week to demonstrate a medical device to a group of salespeople. You'd think the salespeople would be doing the demonstration rather than the surgeon doing it.. I mean what is the surgeon trying to sell to salespeople? but either way... *gasp*

it just seems that as a society we put so much more of an emphises on the life of a dog compared to other animals. well, when ya think about it.. why not? We put more emphasis on the life of humans compared to other animals too.... why not have a pecking order. I recall people wanting to stop the clubbing of baby seals and wanting to shave the whales and stuff, but only the extremist animal rights types cared what happened to the "not cute" animals. Dogs are our friends, they are domesticated, they're cute and everyone loves puppies.... of course a dog killed for research will get more of a reaction. Quite frankly I'm freaking pissed off, but I also understand why I am and that I wouldn't be if it had been a horse or a cow or a duck.

There are some really twisted individuals who permiate our society today. And this may even be classified as some type of sexual fettish.Especialy if they were shaving around the blow hole area of the whales. What'll they think of next? JMHO
