j/c. Wow. Might be time to weigh in on this one.
Here are some ideas for team names. The:
Savannah Massahs. Harlem Spooks. Boston Micks ("Shanty," "Bicycle" or "Houseboat"- ...not "Lace-Curtain,"thank yew...) AC/Milan Dagos. Tel Aviv Kikes. Notre Dame Mackerel-Snappers.
From my perspective, it's all distasteful, and speaks to either our apathy or our Lowest Common Denominator... but it ain't illegal. Since it isn't a violation of criminal law, it's being challenged in civil court... the only venue available to those who feel they have a legitimate gripe. They may feel so, and perhaps they're justified... but such "surgically precise" actions seldom do more than change the look of our society's window dressing.
Should the litigants prevail, newspapers will shout headlines: "Major Victory for Civil Rights," while nothing of substance was improved, personal race relations remain a hotbed of paranoia and half-truthed crap, and noone treats anyone else any differently than they ever have. A team's name was changed. Big whoop.
Such superficial issues bog down the civil justice system and take valuable resources away from serious sociopolitical issues. As citizens, we have weighty issues in our country that truly impact our quality of citizenship. We should not be concerned with this type of cosmetic fluff. Substance trumps style every time, in my book.
I revealed my pan-ethnic background to all Dawgs in a tailgate post a couple months back... so you all know that there's plenty of reasons for me to be offended at a good half-dozen or so team names/logos... if such trivial matters interested me.
Bottom line: there's too much real work to be done in this country for us to waste time suing sports teams for their names/logos. There are real culprits out there, doing bad things, who are beyond the reach of the criminal courts... and the only venue for common folk to make them accountable is the civil courts.
We should be using our system for a higher cause, if you ask me.

p.s.- Chief Wahoo looked stupid to me when I was 7 years old. Cleveland should replace him on the basis of aesthetics alone. And while they're at it, they should give the boot to "Chomps" (who's toothless, by the way...) and all his plushy pals at CBS...

Which means obviously nothing considering they have been suing for 16 years now. Maybe you can join the fight since you know it all

It means, I'm not surprised that you like it.
But you're a smart one, I'm sure you could've figured that out on your own.

I'm not calling you anything. It just didn't come as a surprise to me that you would like Chief Wahoo. Just like I'm sure it's no surprise to you that I don't.
Calm down man! If I wanted to call you something, I would.

Well then they need to start protesting at all you can eat buffets. I swear those redskin potatoes have some evil meaning behind their name
I'm part Indian, and I don't consider "Redskin" a racial slur at all. Of course I'm also part white and I don't consider "cracker" a slur either. I swear if everybody's skin was this thin we could do away with MRI's ct scans, and x-rays because we could see right it.

Well since you were to damn lazy to post a link.
Quote:
§1052. Trademarks registrable on the principal register; concurrent registration
No trademark by which the goods of the applicant may be distinguished from the goods of others shall be refused registration on the principal register on account of its nature unless it-- (a) Consists of or comprises immoral, deceptive, or scandalous matter; or matter which may disparage or falsely suggest a connection with persons, living or dead, institutions, beliefs, or national symbols, or bring them into contempt, or disrepute; or a geographical indication which, when used on or in connection with wines or spirits, identifies a place other than the origin of the goods and is first used on or in connection with wines or spirits by the applicant on or after one year after the date on which the WTO Agreement (as defined in section 2(9) of the Uruguay Round Agreements Act [19 USC §3501(9)]) enters into force with respect to the United States.

Just how in the hell is the Team name Washington Redskins either immoral, deceptive, or scandalous.

Now they just have to prove it is scandalous or disparaging, and have to prove it was registered after that act, otherwise, no law was broken.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Now that is a rather idiotic comment on your part. Some people here asked a very reasonable question on what basis the lawsuit was made? I did not assume they were too damn lazy to seek the answer for themselves, it only showed me that they had limited interest. So I met them halfway and provided them their answer. Where were you?

Ha ha ha, nice turnaround on the redskin potatoes.
Well, this thread just proves my theory that this topic should be added to the ban list on this site. This topic causes too much arguing an´ there is never a mind changed afterwards.
......but it's still fun though.

I'm sure this will offend many, and personally I don't care. Get over yourselves. I hear this talk about progress? Sorry protecting peoples fragile little feelings isn't progress. In my opinion the Native Americans can just get over themselves. If people want to be so protected that nothing is allowed to offend them, then MOVE to a communist country, PERIOD. There is no argument. Every year people of this country get just get more and more sensitive. We can push 1 for spanish, while illegals get free healthcare, we can take god out of the pledge to appease everyone else, and to top it off we are expected to make sure our sports teams don't offend anyone. This is America people, where you have the right to be offended and also the right to offend. To bad people are so thin skinned and weak anymore that the slightest thing offends them.
Yeah who ever said people wont change their minds on this topic is dang right!! I'm sick of politcal correctness, it's gotten ridiculous. Chief Wahoo for LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you ever seen these so called Natine-American protesters? I have down at the Jake. They are mostly White People with to much time on their hands. They stand there with a Poodle in one hand and protest sign in the other. I don't know any self-respecting Indian ( Sorry, Native American ) that would own a Poodle.

To show support? The same reason men run in breast cancer races and some men supported women in their right to vote... Are you saying that just because you aren't a member of a certain "group" that you can't support their cause and show up?

Support for what ? To tell someone to register to vote or taking responsibility for themselves ? You need a few whites to show up to support you on that The march was specifically for blacks period, not whites, asians or hispanics. Well by the looks of that picture I posted there sure wasn't a lot of "support" huh ?
