We are getting a new computer (unfortunately, not a MAC at this time -- couldn't justify the expense to basically surf the internet). I will need to get it protected and move some things from this machine when I set it up. It comes with Norton...and I want all files related to it removed. How can I make sure I've got them all off the hard disc? Since I won't be using Norton, what programs would you guys suggest to protect us? Also, what is the easiest way to get my files to the new computer? There isn't much to move over...mostly pictures and a few small programs, most of which I can just download again. Guess I better locate my modem and router installation CDs.

AVG for antivirus...it's free.
To move files...external hard drive. I save all of my important files to my hd on my laptop and my external, so I always have a backup! Save to external from old pc, plug external into new pc and save files to hd!

I use AVG now, but I didn't know if it was all I need. Thanks for the info on the external hard drive...any brand suggestions? I'm not a guru when it comes to things like this.

Oh, I'd probably also download a freebie firewall, ad/spyware protector. No names from me as I'm not really supposed to download anything (work laptop, yanno). But, for ad/spyware I have Ad Aware.
I also have Windows Defender on here, as well as Norton (which I keep active because it's what my company wants us to use)
For the externals: John and I have 3 Seagate external HD's. I trust John's judgement for those things.

Easiest way to transfer documents, is a USB hard drive or if it's not a lot of information you can use a USB flash drive.
Although having an external USB Hard Drive is a nice thing to have around, and to backup your data on, on a regular basis. It's small and easy enough to grab in an emergency and run with.
As for software, the new AVG 8.0 includes anti-spyware features as well. For live spyware protection I use Spy Doctor, and have had great results with it.

I tend to like the free stuff too. AVG, Ad Aware and Zone Alarm Free Firewall plus the Yahoo popup blocker. I've not had problems with that combination. There are prolly better ones (read more expensive) but, like I said, no problems here.

AVG, what is this antivirus program? Is it better than Norton? Would I have to un-install all my Nortonstuff? Where would I get the AVG stuff?
I have been going without antivirus for about 6 months, been pretty lucky.

I use McAfee. It seems to do a good job and is pretty easy to use....can be a bit slow though.

Yes, AVG is an anti-virus. It's free. I've been using it for a while, based on recommendations from folks here— It's, IMO, way better than Norton or MacAfee. Easier to use. I haven't (can't) un-install my Norton, but I turned it off. It doesn't run any scans unless I do it manually. Download AVG here

I've in-stalled AVG and it up and running. I've also un-installed all of Norton. WOW over 6 or 7 months no antiviurs running alot of warnings and threats were found, thanks for posting this stuff guys.
One more question, is the free version good enough or should I up-grade to a little better version?

The free version is fine. Just more bells and whistles with the paid version.
Personally, I use AVG Free edition for my AV. I also run Firefox V3 with NoScript addon for web browsing. AdAware and Spybot S&D are my spyware detection duo.

I don't suggesst free. You will get what you pay for. I use Trend Micro for anti virus and Webroot to protect agains spy ware and ad ware. No complaints as of yet.. I used to use Nortons, but it allowed adware to come anialate my hard drive and had to reboot. I will never trust Norton again.

Not to mention that Norton tends to eat up system resources slowing the entire machine down....or at least it used to, not sure if it still does.

AVG Free is a very good virus program. I have been using it at home for about 2-3 years and have no issues. And I have the pro version here at work on the servers.
I had Norton before that and it did nothing except mess up my files.

I have used AVG free for many years both at home and on many of our work computers. I have never had a problem yet.

Yes it does still hog your resources. So does McAfee. This is one of the biggest reasons I will never let any Norton or McAfee program on my system.

I have also used AVG for years. It does a fine job, but doesn't catch everything. I visit Trend Micro's Housecall every couple of weeks or so and the combination has worked for me.

Setting up the new computer now. Took AOL & Norton off. Replaced with Firefox & AVG. Still working on things, but I'll get there eventually. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. And, Navy...trust me, I know.

Should I use Microsoft's firewall or a different one? Now that I've got AVG, do I need AdAware and other stuff?

AVG 8.0 has spyware protection in it as well, and it seems to work pretty good so far.

I had it on the other computer and it seemed okay. But I also had several other things (that I never used). Just wasn't sure if AVG free was all I need.

Well you can never be too protected, so if you have the space and speed, and feel more comfortable with more than 1, go for it.
I use AVG Free at home, and I have Spy Doctor that runs as well. Which I think I pay 29.00 for Spy Doctor, which is good for a year, then I have to renew it. But it has always worked very well so for $30 it is worth it.

I couldn't disagree more. AVG ROCKS the AV side of things. The best of the best of the Anti-Spyware side is ALL freeware: Spybot, Spyware Blaster, Windows Defender, HijackThis, etc, etc, etc...

TrendMicro is definitely good... used to use them back in my sysadmin days, but there were still plenty of times that it would miss things. Their admin tools for deployment and group management absolutely rocked. Symantec/Norton is the Devil. You will never see me do anything with Norton Antivirus except uninstall it.

Just remove Windows and install Linux on it.. That's what I did, but then again Linux isn't for everybody but is a lot easier to use than when I started using it.. But AVG is good and free but also remember an anti-spyware program. Stay away from Norton.. others you may try is Kapersky or nodd32(sp?) and maybe trendmicro's pccillin.

[ Bought your PC at Best Buy huh?
I got really ticked off at Best buy one day, and spoke to the store manager about this.
I was in there picking up a new wireless router for home. There was a salesmen talking to an elderly retired couple about a PC in the next isle and I could hear him talking to them.
He was trying to sell them this $1600 gaming system. Giving them the lines about how great it is and it will run anything they want to put on it, and will keep them up to date for several years into the future.
He stepped away to answer a call and I leaned into the shelving and told the couple that I was an IT guy and that if all they wanted was to surf the internet and email their grandchildren and such, which is what they had told the salesmen they wanted it for, then the $499 special at the end of the isle will work perfectly or them.
The guy thanked me and said he knew the salesmen was full of bull but he didn't know anything about computers and wanted to be sure they got what they needed.
The system came with a trial of McAfee, which I don't like but trying to explain to this couple how to download AVG and install and maintain it wasn't worth it, so I told them to pay for McAfee when the trial was up, and they should be good.
I grabbed my router and went up front and the store manager was standing there, so I explained to him what I just experienced and that I feel it is unethical to oversell to a vulnerable couple like that. He said he would talk to the salesmen, which I doubt anything came of it, but at least I expressed my disappointment, and saved the couple from spending $1000 too much.

AVG now has spyware protection included. Would it be beneficial to add an additional program anyway?

I hate when salesman do that. I went to a camera store a couple weeks ago to get a remote for my camera. All I needed was a basic button on a cable that plugged into the camera. Guy tries to sell me this $300 remote. I left, and got a remote online for $25.
As for Michele's question, personally, I'd stick with the just the anti-spyware in AVG unless you are having problems with spyware, then you may want to bring other programs in.
On another note, don't run as an administrator. Create a regular user account and use that. Only use the admin account if you are trying to do something that the normal account can't do(such as install programs). This will help keep some spyware from installing.

Thanks, I'll do that. Interesting about running as administrator. It's scary what these spyware programs can do.

squires makes a good point....if you run as a "user" then nothing can get installed...it might try but it doesn't have the rights to change anything important....
i've got both of my computers running as asministrators, with just avg and windows defender....and i have no problems..
user accounts sometimes have problems with programs working, but if all your programs work, then its a sure fire way to help keep your computer clean of spyware and viruses....
you can still download them and get them on your computer, but they won't work......

A second anti-spyware program can be beneficial.. a second anti-virus program can be detrimental.
