I went to the dealership to trade in my gas guzzling SUV for a brand new hybrid sedan. They have a waiting list that is averaging 60 days. Very frustrating. Is it that way up in Ohio also?

They can't keep the hybrid on the lot, they are all on backorder. I think it's everywhere.
I read something the other day about Toyota converting one of their SUV plants to make hybrids to increase production.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Yeah I suppose alot of people are thinking and doing what I am.
Good, well won't be in time for me but that is who I am dealing with, Toyota, getting the 2009 Camry Hybrid.

Years ago, I was in a discussion about "green lifestyles." This was when SUV's were just starting to gain popularity, and the only choices were pretty much Jeep Grand Cherokees or Toyota 4-Runners.
After wondering why more folks didn't recycle (even tho we have curbside pick-up...), drive slower, car-pool, etc... we got into the subject of gas-guzzlers.
I made the statement: Even if it's easy, forward-thinking and the right thing to do, Americans won't really commit to being "green" until they're hit in their wallets.
Looks like I might have been right, 15 years ago.
If I had a little bit of cash to invest, I'd be diving all over some of the new "green tech" firms that are just starting up. I think they'll represent the growth industries of the next 20 years.
good luck with your new car, Navy, I've ridden in the Prius, it's very sweet commuter ride. Gotta assume Toyota will do just as well with their Camry. Let us know what you think,,, once you get it (in Sept.)

It's not just hybrids. I run a Honda dealership in Virginia, and all trim levels of Civics are in high demand.
My next 11 that are produced are pre sold.

A few months ago we were looking at buying a Prius and trading in my wife's '02 Mazda Millinia, they wouldn't give me what the Mazda was worth and they'd hardly come down on the Prius (plus, we'd be on a list). I came to the conclusion that it's not the right time to buy a hybrid. It's a seller's market. We bought central air conditioning instead.....and man-o-man, am I happy about that at this very moment.

I'm driving a Cr-V right now... I need to haul my crap to work, and it's the perfect size for the job. I'm getting low-mid 20's with it, but recently started extending the time between fill-ups by simply driving 5-10 mph slower when I'm using the 4-lanes in and around town. I also started plotting my trips to avoid traffic lights as much as possible. Don't know which contributes more, but I'll continue perfecting both until they are habit. Already, I'm getting an extra 2-3 days between rapings at the pump... and folks are passing me on the roads like I'm standing still.
Wait long enough, and you'll get your hybrid for a price you want... probably late next Spring, when the initial rush subsides. Supply & demand, you know..

First let me admit I'm an old guy with old standards so I'm not sure what a sweet commuter ride is exactly but the Prius is not my idea of sweet ride. Yeah it saves gas and it'll get ya there but the fun to drive factor is a kin to taking the bus.

Thats what I did. I went down and put a $500 deposit on my Civic Si and they built her for me. The 2 months I had to wait sucked b/c I so wanted it right then and there. The cool thing is I took delivery on my birthday. Best gift I ever got

smooth, quiet, well-behaved. We'll see about reliable, as a few years pile up on them. you know... sweet for commuting. I'm an old fart too... and remember riding in a couple late 70's muscle cars. They were racing/performance machines, not commuter cars I also drove a Triumph Spitfire into the ground in my early 20's. First car I ever owned. So I do understand the "fun factor." I'm tamer now, and my criteria have changed.

C'mon out to the land of the tree huggers. We have quite a few of Prius' on the lots still. Then again, when they first came out, there was a 6 month waiting list... we were a little ahead of the curve. Toyota learned fast. Not sure about Civic or other hybrids, didn't look up those.
On the flip side, I have a friend that wants an Audi S5, and they currently have a 6 month waiting list, though not because of fuel efficiency...

I'm surprised it's 60 days,I would have thought it might be longer. Those cars are sure in demand with gas over $4 a gallon. Good move switching,don't know what type of SUV you have but my fill ups are $80

I wouldn't mind the waiting for a car (heck, I waited 3 months for the vette to be built). It's just that they don't have to cut you any slack. I had one dealer tell me "...and we're still selling them at just MSRP" (Prius). So I replied "Is that supposed to impress me?".  My DD is a 4 cyl Camry. The wife gets low 20's with the Mazda....we'll survive for a while... We drove the sales manager's Prius. Was nice enough...lots of room...rear storage...back up camera was kinda cute...auto shifter is a little quirky.... They'll be making '09's and 010's...probably plug ins by then and stronger competition (competition is a good thing).

I am waiting for the plug ins to come out. I have a 40 mile trip to work. I can plug in while at work, so basically I could ride to work and back ,burningzero gas.

Thats what I did as well, put a grand down to be put on the list, now just waiting for it to be built. But I sure as hell hope I don't get it on my birthday being it is in March.

I see used Prius' on dealer lots, not too many new ones, but then I'm not in the market for a car, so unless they are up along the street, I probably won't see them in the back lot.

I just did a search on a couple local dealerships websites for new Prius'. One had 8 and the other had 2 pages worth - was too lazy to count. Plenty of new hybrids up here for sure...

I just searched the first Toyota dealer that I could think of in Akron. Ganley's website claims they have 4: Linkage But who knows when the site was last updated.

A few months ago when we were looking, websites said they had plenty but when you phoned them, they had none.
