Skins trade for Dolphins' Taylor after Daniels goes down

ESPN.com news services

Updated: July 20, 2008, 7:46 PM ET

After losing defensive end Phillip Daniels for the season, the Washington Redskins moved quickly to fill the void.

Taylor Made For Consistency

The Redskins will be getting a pass rusher who always puts up numbers. Jason Taylor has had more than 11 sacks in each of the last three seasons. Here's the list of players that were active in 2007 who have the most seasons with at least 10 sacks.

Player

10+ sack seasons

Status
Simeon Rice 8 Free agent
Jason Taylor 6 Traded
Michael Strahan 6 Retired

The Redskins acquired Jason Taylor from the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins will receive a second-round pick in 2009 and a sixth-rounder in 2010.

According to ESPN.com's John Clayton, Taylor told the Redskins he did not need to renegotiate and was willing to play for the final two years of his contract. He is scheduled to make $8.1 million this season. With around $9 million of cap room, the Redskins were able to work the trade quickly.

The Dolphins had been waiting for an opportunity to trade Taylor, who asked to be moved to a playoff contender at the beginning of the offseason. Before the draft, the Dolphins were asking for a first-round draft choice. They lowered the demand later to a second-rounder.

Taylor didn't win over Miami executive vice president of football operations Bill Parcells by missing all of the team's offseason work while competing in ABC's "Dancing With The Stars."

"We're fortunate there was a guy that caliber on the market when somebody got hurt," Washington executive vice president Vinny Cerrato said. "Normally, in most years, there's not a guy of that caliber on the market."

The 33-year-old Taylor has played 11 NFL seasons and he's started every game each of the past eight years.

He had 11 sacks during the 2007 season, giving him 117 over his career.

"His play speaks for itself. I think it's easy to talk about Jason Taylor. He's got statistics and everything else to back up everything that he's done," Cerrato said.

Taylor has said he planned to play only one more season.

But Cerrato said: "I'm 100 percent positive he'll play longer than one year."

Daniels, a starter, was hurt on the initial play of 7-on-7 offense vs. defense drills on Sunday. He stayed down on the turf for several minutes before being taken away on a cart, a towel draped over his head. He's expected to have surgery Friday.

"Not a good way to start, at all," middle linebacker London Fletcher said. "It's a big blow to our defense. Phil was a tremendous leader, excellent at playing the run, and was going to be our third-down attack guy. With him going down, it's like we're replacing two guys."

ESPN.com's John Clayton first reported Daniels' season-ending injury and the fact that the Redskins were pursuing Taylor.

The Dolphins declined comment even after the Redskins announced the deal.

"Right now we're not prepared to confirm that," Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said.

Cerrato said Taylor is expected to report to Redskins training camp on Monday.

The Redskins also lost another defensive end, reserve Alex Buzbee, to a season-ending injury during their afternoon practice. Buzbee ruptured his Achilles tendon.

"With Phillip gone, and now Buzbee gone, there's a hole there," head coach Jim Zorn said. "And Phillip has created a big hole."

Day 1 of Zorn's training camp debut as an NFL head coach also included this sight: Cornerback Fred Smoot threw off his left shoe and clearly was in pain after wideout Santana Moss landed on him during the afternoon practice. It turned out Smoot sprained his ankle and is expected to only miss a week or less.

"I love sprained ankles now, because we know that's just a few days' deal," Zorn said, cracking a smile.

He was more serious while speaking about the loss of Daniels, who has played 12 seasons in the NFL with Washington, Chicago and Seattle. His 59 career sacks rank 17th among active players.

"The hard part is he was so ready, and he did everything that he could possibly do to not just have a great training camp but an excellent football season," Zorn said. "And now he's got a new challenge before him, and of course we have a new challenge before us."

The Redskins began training camp with Erasmus James sidelined. He's a former first-round pick who has had serious knee injuries, and Zorn said he doesn't expect James to be able to begin practicing until next month.

Information from ESPN.com senior NFL writer John Clayton and The Associated Press was used in this report.

Man after some of the Browns pre-seasons have gone with tons of injuries I can fully say I sympathize them. That being said it is so refreshing to not being reading this about the Browns!!

This is an excellent deal for the Phins. The Skins needed the body.

I saw the 'Skins had lost not only Daniels, but another DE as well. They were talking to them earlier today, so it was just a matter of time.

Sounded like the Taylor rumblings died off. All it took was an injury at the first camp practice of the NFL season to get it going again.

While I think it was a good deal for the Phish in a rebuilding mode, my first thought was just the opposite ... man, what a deal for the 'Skins.

This is actually an upgrade and at a decent price, IMO. If Campbell can put up a decent season, these guys might be pretty decent.

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Maybe, but a 2nd and a 6th with a $9M price tag for an 11th year vet who'd rather dance than go to OTAs? I don't know... He obviously wasn't happy in Miami so maybe it works out for all concerned.

It'll definitely be interesting to see how the Skins do with Zorn at the helm. They have talent... but then again, they've had talent for a few years now.

old tuna played it right. he waited for something like this to happen to get better value.

it seems like a good trade for both. the skins fill a position of need with a bonafied stud for the next 2 years, and the dolphins get the value they were looking for as far as the draft.

I still have the cowboys winning the east. the skins could get a wild card. I think the giants run last year was a fluke, similar to what colorado did in baseball. they just got hot at the right time.

injuries in training camp sure can change the perspective of things quickly. The skins just got hit hard at DE.

All in all, i think the dolphins came out of this deal as the huge winners. Taylor had a monster salary, is getting older, talking about retiring soon- if not at the end of this year. They get a second rounder for him(and a 6th).... desparation move sure does inflate the price.

But good for Taylor- he gets out of a losing environment and a chance to make the playoffs with the skins.

Comments like this kill me. The work outs that he missed were voluntary. He's been one of the top 3 players on the Dolphins since he got there. He's in better shape than at least 70% of the team if not more even at his age. So he misses a couple of "practices" in shorts and all of a sudden he's a bad guy? Sorry, throwing the BS flag on that one.

I also agree with Rish on the trade. I think it's very possible that the Redskins got the best of this one. People make a big deal of Taylor's age but he's younger than the guy on the 'Skins that he's replacing. And who knows....he may decide to play longer once he gets to DC. Just to stick it to the "Tuna". I know I would.

I agree with you Otto.

And if I am not mistaken, relating to his salary, his bonuses (if any are left) escalate on the phins, which leaves the skins only having to pay his salary. Thus, if he completely sucks this year, they can cut him with no cap hit for next year. Considering what the skins lost, I think it is worth the 2nd round gamble.

I agree with you Otto,, sometimes the Tuna can color outside the lines a bit.. sometimes it's entertaining, sometimes it's down right stupid..'

This is the latter....

It depends on whether or not the money for that bonus has already been paid. If it is signing bonus money, then it has already been paid when he signed the contract and the Phins are responsible for it... half this year and half next (it's after June 1). If the bonus has not been paid yet (e.g a future roster or performance incentive bonus), then the Skins are responsible for it completely, in the year it is paid (only signing bonuses may be accounted for pro-rated over time).

Throw any kind of flag you want. It's not about the shape he's in, it's about playing in a new system under a new coach and the attitude of being part of the team. He obviously wasn't happy in Miami and he made it known.

Maybe Rish is right, maybe not, I said I didn't know, and neither do you, but as far as sticking it to the Tuna, I'm sure the Tuna can take care of himself and highly doubt he got screwed on this deal.

... not sure Allen ( or at least the philosophy) ever left. This looks like a win-win situation for both teams. The Skins get a player now when they need it most. The Fins will still be in rebuilding mode for more than one season and really need draft picks more than a high priced aging vet that may not be around if and when they finally improve.

He also went through Nick Saban and his new coaching staff and Cam Cameron last year...........

The guy's played with the Dolphins for awhile and shown that he is loyal to the team. He's a team player and never has been a problem. I think he won defensive player of the year at least once also (unless Shawn Steroids Merrimen won it that year).

So yeah, it's the same BS that people were throwing at Winslow when he took time off. Do you really think that Jason Taylor isn't working out? That he can't jump onto that squad and do just fine without OTAs? He's earned it..........

And it doesn't seem like a bad deal for the Skins to me at all.... especially with the team they're putting together. If they can just get Brett Favre (or if Jason Campbell performs well), they'll be one of the favorites for the NFC IMO. Depending on those rookie recievers at least.

All I see in this is this:

He's been there for a LONG time and has gone through a LOT of very bad seasons, almost going 0-16 last year.
His career is also very much in its twilight.... I see little doubt that he wanted to just try to get to a team that has a small chance of not sucking.

He'll still be effective, but he isn't going to be the superstar world-beater that gained him notoriety.
For the two teams involved... it's a good move. One gets its lockerroom cleaned up a bit (disgruntled players are bad) and some draft picks, the other gets a player at a position of dire need.

I think there is no way he was going to play in Miami another year and he and Parcells both knew it. Miami couldn't get a second round pick for him when they tried to deal him earlier but since the Skins lost two DEs he's suddenly a stud bargain. I still think Miami came out on top but good luck to all concerned.

I could see that, going along with what PPE said, Miami hasn't been good in awhile and Taylor has been along for the ride for a long time. Everybody needs a change once in awhile, and as I said, he deserves it.

I do think he will be very good this year just because of his experience and his freakish ability to pass rush as well as get to ball carriers, but yes, he's on the downward spiral of his career. He won't play every down, and he probably won't be the same player he used to be.

He's still better than most DE's in the league though, and I don't think he should have been criticized for doing that Dancing With The Stars, there's life outside of football for these guys, and he's put his time into that organization.

I don't have a problem with him doing Dancing With The Stars, per se. I just think his timing and decision making sucked.

Yes, that was my assumption, but didn't call it out.

Any non signing bonuses are not guaranteed, so if Washington wanted to cut him off season, they aren't responsible for any money.
