From PFT:

CHARGERS CUT PARKER
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 23, 2008, 2:22 p.m.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the San Diego Chargers have released wide receiver Eric Parker.

Parker started 12 games for the Chargers in 2006 and caught 48 passes for 659 yards, but in 2007 he missed the entire season with a toe injury. The Chargers had indicated that they were not planning to bring him back this season, so it’s no surprise that he was released just before veterans are to report for training camp.

The 29-year-old Parker, who has spent his entire six-year career in San Diego, still wants to play somewhere this season. There has been speculation that the Browns could be interested in acquiring Parker, although it’s unlikely that any team would give him the $1.85 million salary he would have been due this season with the Chargers.
----------------------------

ESPN states he could be signed almost immediately by another team. Hopefully he'll be a good fit while JJ recovers.

I'd imagine the Browns would be very hot on the trail of Eric Parker. Savage, I believe, wanted to get him this offseason but didn't want to give up anything of value.

Worth a look.

Parker would be a great fit at slot for the browns, especially if Jurevicius is going to be out an extended period of time....

Even if Wilson or Kasper shows up and has a big camp, I'd be much more comfortable with a veteran in there, we already have explosion in Edwards, K2, and Stallworth, what we need is a stable guy to get 6 yards on 3rd and 5

Depends on how well he's recovered from his injury. A few years ago, he wasn't a bad receiver. If he's brought on to be the third option, and he can produce like he did before, it would be a good pickup.

Would add some great depth to an already potent offense... I think I like.

I bet Savage has already spoken to his agent. Would be nice to bring him in if we are sure that Wilson can not bring anything to the team this season. If we brought him in probably means the end of Wilson and definitely Kasper.

We could also bring Parker in for a look, and let Wilson prove himself in camp....

opening day WR depth chart - Edwards, Stallworth, Parker, Wilson, Cribbs

and then if/when Jurevicius gets back, you make a choice on whether to cut Parker or Wilson

Wow. I figured I'dÜbe in the minority in wanting to bring in Parker. The JJ injury concernes me quite a bit. I would love to have someone to fill that spot while he is out. Parker could be a nice fit, IMO.

No probs with seeing him come here. Those '06 stats (if stats mean anything) look downright respectable.

averaged 4 catches/game
13.7 ypc average.

I'm not Phil, but I'd try signing him at 1M, and load his paper with incentives to get back the other .85 (or more).

If he's to be considered a replacement for JJ, we may have to be a bit patient early on. JJ already knew the playbook, his team mates and everyone's tendencies. Even tho EP comes from a Chud-type system (definitely a plus), it could take him some time to get up to speed, mesh with the other players, and get himself toughened up for those patented Derek Anderson "touch passes"over the middle...

I like the idea of getting him, but I won't expect him to pick right up with JJ's numbers. Not right away, at least.

I wouldn't expect JJ numbers, but I honestly couldn't care less about numbers. What will be nice though, with a guy like Parker, is having an extra threat in the passing game. I hated losing JJ, because he made our receivers so much harder to cover, when we spread the field with 3 good receivers, and K2 at TE. Just imagine teams trying to cover BE, Parker, Stallworth, and K2, on the field at the same time.

I'm sure Chud is already been on the phone luring him to come to Cleveland for a year and see what happens.

Phil is already seeing what we can sign him too if we can.

Worth a flyer.

I think the biggest difference in comparing him to JJ is size. JJ was a big target at 6'5" so he was easier to spot and get the ball on 3rd down. Parker is 6'0" so potentially not as easy of a target for third down receptions. That is what JJ did so well for this offense.

Bet Hubbard was drafted for that role. He is 6'3" so a closer model to JJ. Not sure I want to rely on a rookie to fill that role this year though.

Signing Steinbach - $49.5 million
Signing Lewis - $5 million
Drafting Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn - millions more
Restoring the Browns to champions - priceless.

So, is he healthy now? hows that toe? If he's so good, why are the Bolts just letting him go?

...well, at least we're not asking if guys can bulk up to 315 and learn to pancake block anymore.

As has been said, he might have a leg up on the crowd coming from SD.

Wouldn't surprise me to see Eric Parker, Ty Law and Ashton Youboty ALL end up Browns.

According to Phil Savage, Parker isn't going to be... at least not yet.

How do I know that you ask,, Ok,, I'll tell ya.., Go to the main page and listen to the savage interview and he's asked about parker... The answer was, not at this time.

I think we should definitely take a look at him -don't understand the fascination so far about Kevin Kasper (Deacon was gushing all over him on TV today). Although I'm quietly optimistic about Travis Wilson putting it together, Parker would be a great slot receiver for us. We need someone with good hands, since Braylon and Donte both have been known to drop some passes.

Parker is a player worth having on your team. I like him a lot. No he will never be a pro-bowl player, but he is a good football player.

Everyone is out there looking for the next Wes Welker. From what I'm told, Kasper is pretty quick and shifty. A pretty good attribute to have for playing the slot.

A smaller, quick, shifty type reciever has generally been thought of as ideal in the past. That just makes no sense to me. To me, the ideal slot receiver is a big target, that can run good routes, has a knack for finding the soft spot in the zone on third down, and can catch the ball when he knows hes about to get the wood laid to him(ala Joe Jur).

I dont think we need Parker, for some reason I think TW is going to have a break out season. I think Travis will catch 40./50 balls for about 700 YDS.

If the simoleons are right, and if Chud will use him as "hard slot" or harsh flanker, think it would be a natural set off Winslow or some such. We gotta look at this guy, but not at contract price mentioned here JMO

My take on Parker is that he has always had a reputation of being a precision route runner and had good hands. Knowing our system and Chud getting to know Parker while a coach with SD - Chud would know best how he would be an asset for us.

I suspected that if Parker was all that Chud would have Savage look into obtaining him as soon as he was released (prior we heard that SD was shopping Parker).

But I read this morning (a 7/23 article) that Savage CURRENTLY was not interested. My take on it is that Savage could be interested in a couple of weeks under two conditions.
1. Parker was still available but for some reason I don't think Savage is too worried about that.
2. The kids we are look at just aren't panning out. Steptoe, Ephram Hill, Cribbs n Wilson. All getting more reps now in TC cause of the nick injury (hammy) of Stallworth.

Here's the blurb about Savage n Parker from the Browns home page:

Savage said the Browns currently don't have any interest in Eric Parker, a veteran wide receiver who was released by the Chargers Tuesday. Parker would be familiar with Rob Chudzinski's offensive system from the time Chudzinski spent as the Chargers' tight ends coach before returning to the Browns last year.
