Hi there. I'm having a debate with a buddy of mine. A question for you Ohioans and transplanted Ohioans.
Do you consider Ohio:
1.) In the U.S. Midwest 2.) U.S. northeast 3.) A little of both

If I had to pick one, I'd call it the midwest... but I personally consider it to be between the two options provided.

None of the above. It is the heartland of this country. And further more, Archbold is the center of the heart (not geographically mind you). Honestly, I don't consider it the "midwest", and I don't consider it the northeast.. I know, that doesn't answer your question, but hey, I live here and don't consider it either of the options you gave. So, what do I consider it? Dang, I'll have to get back to you on that - I don't know.

I've always heard it referred to as the Mid West, but that has never made sense to me...mid what of west where??
The best term I've heard is Great Lakes region.

I believe the Weather Channel considers us to be Northeast, while the Census Bureau considers Ohio to be North Central. (according to Wikipedia at least): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midwestern_United_StatesThat being said, in the linked Wikipedia article Ohio is referred to as being in the Midwest. Since you didn't form this in the style of a poll as is the norm in the K9 Consensus forum, I am moving this thread to the Tailgate Lot for further invigorating discussion on the topic at hand.

There was a third option: "a little of both" - on the cusp of both regions.

I consider it the midwest.
I have heard this saying before... Ohio is the west of the east, east of the west, south of the north and north of the south.. It's pretty much.. Mid-directional.

To me Mid West means middle of the west. I suppose we are in the middle of the eastern half of the country, but we don't really want to be called the mid east, do we?

I like the term mid-east. Midwest is a ridiculous term to define ohio. Seriously.. mid-west? Ohio? So the west is the entire country? Is that the idea? Even then Ohio would be no where near the middle of that.
I say we split the continent in half, along the minnesota, iowa, missouri, arkansas, louisiana border.
Indiana, michigan, ohio, kentucky, tennesee, alabama are the mid-east. Montana, wyoming, colorado, new mexico are the mid-west.
I don't really know if there is any great compromise in the naming, it could be a Great Lake region, Ohio river region, west Appalachian region... or just simply Ohio...

It depends on what day it is. You see we are one of the only States that can go through all four regions in a day. We may start out as North Eastern early in the morning with snow flurries, then after some strong winds and driving rain we can be Midwestern in the late morning, only to turn gray and dreary and turn into central after lunch time. But don't worry we can turn southern in the afternoon and hit 80 degrees. AHHHH Ohio where else can you enjoy all four regions in the same day
I AM ALWAYS RIGHT... except when I am wrong.

I think folks east of the Appalachians and west of the Rockies (either coast) tend to consider anythng in between as some version of "midwest".. I guess I tend to describe it as midwest... but it's certainly not "midwest" in the sense that Kansas and Nebraska and Iowa are midwest... However I've certainly NEVER thought of Ohio as northeast.

As an Ohio native, I have always thought of Ohio being a little part of many regions.
The southeast part of the state (where I am from) is Appalachian. The northern part of the state is rust belt/Great Lakes. The central and west parts of the state are midwest.
I was in Holland, MI yesterday on business and was amazed at how much it looked like Ohio's north coast. When I drive to my parent's house in Marietta (If Ohio is the heart of it all, Marietta is the start of it all), I feel like I am in western Pennsylvania in the hills. Driving through western Ohio is like driving through Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, etc.
It is funny because everyone in Michigan thinks Ohio is nothing but flat farmland. My wife was amazed the first time I took her to Mariretta and we drive down I-77 south of I-70. She couldn;t believe the beautiful hills there.
My brother-in-law who is a real, er... jerk, once called me a flatlander (he is from Lansing). I told him I had been over speed bumps in my hometown that were higher than any hill he had ever crested. Michigan to me is dead flat compared to the Ohio I know. I guess it just illustrates how different various parts of the state are from one another. And it is that geologic diversity that helps define whether the state is midwest (the flat farmlands), rust belt (lake and river access as well as coal sources), etc.
