Defense enjoys productive day Zac Jackson, Staff Writer 07.25.2008 The dances could use a little work, but the Browns' defense threw itself a pick party Friday afternoon. Two defenders brought their interceptions the other way - one in an easy glide, one in a memorable rumble through traffic. You can guess which one was Shaun Rogers'. The Browns' new big(gest) man showed off his athleticism late in practice when he tipped a Brady Quinn pass in the air, corralled it and then headed upfield - with a convoy - trying to replicate his touchdown return last season against the Broncos. He didn't make it all the way to the endzone, but he did earn a rousing celebration from his teammates and a strong ovation from the overflow crowd. Antwan Peek, Sean Jones and Brandon McDonald jumped on Rogers - literally - right after the play. Rogers and Robaire Smith then displayed a few choreographed dance moves before leaving the field. "We're out there having fun," Smith said. "We know we've got to be serious in between the snaps, but if somebody does something, we're going to have fun with it. That's going to be one of our identities on the defensive line. We want to have more fun while we're playing." One player who probably didn't have too much fun on the play was Lawrence Vickers, who was the first offensive player in the area trying to stop Rogers after the interception. Vickers received a stiffarm from Rogers for his troubles. "I'm quite sure if that was live, that little fullback would have gotten run over," Smith said. The other notable interception came from rookie linebacker Alex Hall, who was coming off the edge when he saw Jamal Lewis trying to sneak out of the backfield. In his next glance he saw the ball, and a few seconds later he was running untouched up the sideline. "It was just a read," Hall said. "I read Jamal going out, so I knew it was some kind of screen. I looked up and the ball was right there. I just made the play." Hall extended the ball in a bit of celebration after crossing the goal line, but his celebration was much more subdued than Rogers' for two reasons. One, Hall said it was first-ever interception return touchdown. "I didn't know what do," he said. "I was just happy I ran it in." Two, he seemed much more impressed with Rogers' feat than his own. "That's a big dude," Hall said. "He's a fast big guy. I don't know (you'd bring him down). Don't get in his way, I know that. That's a great athlete right there." Home Page Guess Quinn's a bust. He threw a pick in TC.

I'm really starting to worry about Quinn. He can't even get he ball over the head of the D line. i think his height may be a problem.

Pretty bad if you can't even get the ball down field for a safety to pick....gives up more yards.
Cut him.

Yeah, but could a safety stiff-arm Vickers?

Do you realize that people who are use to this board are already confused by me? All kidding aside, I like hearing they are having fun while working hard. Rodgers has a history of mailing it in. If he works hard in camp it may be infectious. I'm also glad to see Hall getting a pick. I love when long shots do well.

All I could think of after seeing him line up against hank, holy crap! That's a huge man!
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

I know that I had previously denounced the whole 'dancing thing' but if the d-line keeps making those kind of plays, then we can dance all the way to the playoffs and beyond. Good stuff!!

I really like how Hall seems to be picking up his position at LB. I think his experience as a TE is probably helping him out in pass coverage. I remember at least 2 clips from OTA's showing hall knocking down passes. Another late-round gem?

He better have tried! Maybe he didn't want to mess up his fine coif.
And who threw the pick to Hall? They don't say but they imply by not saying that it was Quinn. Is this media bias? I knew every one of those scalawags was on the DA bus. Toot! Toot! All Aboard!

Uh oh, the golden boy threw 2 picks? I always knew he had short range inaccuracy problems, long range inaccuracy problems, decision making problems............he's a second year player - if he had IT, he would've been over this by now - how long are we going to give him? If he can't figure it out by his second year, will he ever?
:sarcasm off:
But isn't that the way DA was treated?

Well, the catch he made today was much better (deflected to himself) but the runback wasn't nearly as dramatic. Of course, the music in that clip helps add to the effect. Hilarious. By the way, the guy who tried to block the Denver player who almost tackled Rogers before he got a mouthful of stiff-arm sucks. He totally whiffed. Funny video though! Here's to many of those in the Brown & Orange Shaun!!

I saw it on Training Camp Daily, and Quinn went after him, but Rogers was already out of bounds when Brady came into the picture.

NOPE...Here's the problem...And it's a good one...
each lineman struggled to preserve the line of scrimmage, as the two Smith's along with Corey Williams, Shaun Rogers and Kamerion Wimbley consistently pushed the line back into the face of the QB's, collapsing the pocket in a manner which was very aggressive and physical.
Consistently beating center Hank Fraley, Rogers spent a considerable amount of time in the offensive backfield. On two occasions the veteran put Fraley on the ground and on two other occasions simply made Fraley take on the appearance of a matador, as the rushing Rogers over-matched his counterpart.

If the big boys make a pick, they might need to explain what they were celebrating to last year's secondary. But if the big boys wanna dance, give em room! I love to watch a hefty return! As a big man myself, I favor the "Sea Pig Returns." Convoy my sweet bippy; we got us an armada, and we WILL take it to the Lake! Go big fella! LOL And BQ may have stunted his growth because he seems short to me too. Knee caps are too close to his shoulder pads, a vital stat overlooked by the Combine (God knoweth they measure everything else!). BQ in four . . .

That's great to hear DinD. Not only does it show what these guys can, and hopefully will, do to opposing offensive linemen, it will also make our own o-line that much better for having praticed against these guys. Win-Win!

Ammo and 017 were counting DA's in another thread. It means nothing at this point IMO. Now if DA or Quinn are throwing two or three a day in late August I'll be really concerned.

well...it's good AND bad news. Our QB's need to be protected. Hopefully Hank can get the job done up the middle, 'cuz that's the shortest route to the QB.

I think Rogers needs to EASE UP on Fraley...lol...
I'm tellin' ya'...Rogers may re-write the Nose position in a 3-4...NOONE has his type talent at the Nose...Not Wilfolk...Not Hampton...Not Ngata...NONE...
He and Williams both will play their responsibilities in run formations...But when it comes time for passing situations these guys won't waste their talents just occupying linemen...THEY'LL BURY EM"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

Well, the thing about training camp is whenever the defense looks good, it means the offense made a mistake. And whenever the offense looks good, it means the defense missed a step. So take it for what it's worth. Considering our d-line is the one in question, I'll take this as a good sign.

I don't know if there is any more entertaining play in football than the INT and return by a massive D-lineman, and Rogers is a master of the art. In my opinion he's up there with Kenard "Michael Johnson" Lang.

I saw about a minute of clips from our TC from either ESPN or NFL Network...it was all Rogers...well the first clip showed a completion from BQ but other than that it was all Rogers. Including his INT.
But what impressed me most was the clips of his one on one battles....or should I say WHAT BATTLES!!! He just blew Fraley away. There is NO POSSIBLE way a team can even think of handling Rogers with one on one...what will be interesting is if the Cowboys will try as Gurode is touted as the strongest center around (since Bentley's injury). But I don't see that as physically possible and quite frankly I think it will be hard to do it with two!
We just might have a shot of AWESOME on D!!!
And our OL should be more ready for it as well!

I wasn't counting them, I said it's disappointing to come home and read that he's threw some picks and had others knocked away. Then I said the comment was inappropriate.
Sometimes I should think before I say something, and instead of deleting my comment, which I knew was wrong, I left it up and pointed it out. I was being a smart ass, which I do too much.
Anyways I'm headed up there this afternoon to take it all in for myself.

The key is, we KNOW what Fraley can do. He did a great job last year. The unkown was what Rogers would bring. While still early, it looks promising, i.e. Rogers is beating our center - the same center that seldom got beat last year.
I think it's a positive plus it may help Fraley out as well, to get even better.
The key is, will Rogers continue this trend, OR, will he fall back into what some considered a weakness for him in the past - taking it easy.
