http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp08/news/story?id=3505642The long LaMont Jordan saga in Oakland is over. The team released the running back Friday after an exhaustive attempt to trade him since early June. Friday's resolution concludes a turbulent end to Jordan's three years in Oakland. Oakland told Jordan, 29, to stay away from training camp and a June minicamp because it was trying to trade him. He had a pre-trade visit to Detroit earlier this month, but talks stalled. Jordan now joins a crowded group of veteran running backs looking for work, including Shaun Alexander, Ron Dayne and Cedric Benson. Jordan's stint in Oakland came to an end because the Raiders have a crowded running back crew, especially now after drafting Darren McFadden with the No. 4 overall pick and because of Jordan's high price tag for 2008. Jordan had 1,025 yards rushing in 2005, his first season in Oakland after signing as a free agent from the New York Jets. However, he combined for just 984 yards in the last two years of Oakland. I wouldnt mind bringing him in for a look during camp, hell anything to keep Lewis fresh.

ditto
With McFadden, Fargas, and Michael Bush on the roster, Oakland is stacked at RB
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

I didnt say anything long term just bring him in during camp to see what he has to bring to the table. Behind our line I think I could even hit some holes pretty effectively

Ron Dayne, lamont Jordan, Shaun Alexander, and Cedric Benson, which of the 4 would I most likely hope the Browns sign,
Well I know 2 years ago definetly Alexander but for some reason I Think Cedric Benson today has the chance to be the most solid and a compliment to the current roster I'd like to see.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

I want no part of CedBen or Jordan.
I'd still like to upgrade our back depth but not with these guys, I think Alexander is done.

Kevin Jones would've been the guy to get, but he's already been scooped up. The rest of these guys are either damaged, or unproductive. Benson and Jordan couldn't produce on consistent level---I don't think Benson produced on any level in the NFL. And Alexander is coming off an injury plagued couple years---I think that nagging injuries will keep him out of the game for the duration of his career.
Dayne has seen some success in spots--he isn't a 16 game type guy. But as a fill-in, a guy that can spell a big feature back a few games when the bumps and bruises start to coalesce, I think he is the best option of the 4.

Benson is an idiot, Alexander is out of his prime, Dayne is too slow, and Jordan can't stay healthy.

Amazing how many formerly-though-of-as-good RBs are sitting at home during training camp. Someone will got a shot thanks to injury, but it still boggles my mind a bit.

My money would be on at least two, if not all four, of them still being available well into the season. These are the guys that will only get a call because of an injury to someone else. They are all yesterday's news, for one reason or another.

I myself always liked LaMont Jordan. Anyone who could go for over 1,000 yards behind those Raider lines could go for about 1,500 anywhere else. I really believe if he's healthy he can still be a very good back. I wouldn't mind at all if we brought him in and gave him a look. Him and Jamal could really punish some defenses.

On that list Jordan is the only one I would consider - talent wise to compete for a roster spot.
But I'm one of the few who just happy with what we got. RB outside of incredible studs is a young man's position. Its also a position that we see manned surprisingly well with a rookie UDFA or late round pick when injuries give them a shot.
Either you got an offense who has a running game or you don't. Talent to run...heck there are like 300 talented RBs coming from DI and DII programs every year to be filtered to a top NFL talent.
Transition is the easiest of all positions.
Top that off with I love the guys we have and their roles with the team.
Jamal...workhorse stud. Wright...3rd down back - blitz picker upper extraordinaire Harrison...playmaker with the balls in his hands.
And we got 2 big 220+ UDFA RBs. Outside of Jamal all young and all have fresh legs. (Wright now has a little hammy problem)
Our back up RBs we need them to provide some bang on Special Teams as well. On that FA list of RBs there is not one there who I think would put their heart into Special Teams...they would brood around unless they have #1 status. Maybe Alexander would (and the only true "FORMER" Stud out of the bunch) but he just doesn't have the gas...and I would hate to see him end his career as a hanging on backup with no legs.

Superman would have a tough time staying healthy behind Oakland's line. They faced basicly a "blitz 9" defense all year as they had no other real threat.
If Jordan winds up in Denver I could see him producing top 15 numbers.

Not as in Yards...that would be Harrison. But he's a good picker upper in all facets of the game

At this point, I think we can go with the RB's we have and draft someone next year (unless there is an amazing FA, not likely) and I think the Browns and Phil should be looking at another CB or WR. For the simple reasons that we are a bit young at CB and the injury issue with JJ and I guess even Donte has a bit of an injury history. However, on your list, Jordan would be the one I'd look at.

No way would I want Lamont Jordan he hasnt done anything with the Raiders. If and its a big if we had to take someone off this list I would want Benson and it would only be for this year and then he's cut.

Well, just for you and any others that dislike Jordan and just for fun, here's what he did in Oakland.
2005- 272 attempts for 1,025 yards and 9 TD''s 70 receptions for 563 yds. and 2 TD's 2006- 114 attempts for 434 yds. and 2 TD's 10 receptions for 74 yds. 0 TD's 2007- 144 attempts for 549 yds. and 3 TD's 28 receptions for 247 yds. 0 TD's
Career- 792 attempts for 3,285 yds. and 24 TD's 158 receptions for 1,301 yds. and 3 TD's
Numbers are more than serviceable IMO. Now, he's obviously not a TD machine but then again look at the teams he's played for, the N.Y. Jets and Oakland Raiders. Not all of the offensive woes of these teams were the fault of Jordan, QB issues, OL issues, WR issues, and possibly coaching issues all played a part, plus, Jordan has had some injury issues.
However, nobody is suggesting bringing him in to replace Lewis, LMAO, just as a serviceable backup. I think he could handle that, but then again, I bet Mike Bell could as well. I don't trust any others on your list except maybe Dayne but he's sort of a FB and we have two. Alexander is aging and mega injured lately, Benson has no heart.
Also appears that Jordan is a pretty decent WR out of the backfield. I'm not really saying I think we need to sign any RB, as I think CB and WR would be of higher need, but just some food for thought. LOL

Patriots sign veteran RB Jordan FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)—The New England Patriots have signed veteran running back LaMont Jordan a day after he was released by the Oakland Raiders. The Patriots did not disclose the terms of the deal with the 29-year-old Jordan, which was announced Saturday. The Raiders released Jordan on Friday after being unable to trade him. Oakland signed Jordan in 2005, but he never developed into the elite back the team envisioned. He had 19 carries in the final nine games last season. His stock dropped further after Oakland selected running back Darren McFadden with the fourth overall pick of April’s draft. Jordan has rushed for 3,285 yards and 24 touchdowns in seven seasons with Oakland and the New York Jets. His best season was 2005 with Oakland, when he rushed for 1,025 yards and nine touchdowns and had 563 yards receiving with two touchdowns.

more... The Patriots announced the signing of free-agent RB LaMont Jordan today. To make room for Jordan on the roster, the team released receiver Robert Ortiz. Here is a bit from the team's press release: Jordan, 29, is a veteran of seven NFL seasons with the New York Jets (2001-04) and Oakland Raiders (2005-07). The 5-foot-10-inch, 230-pound running back has played in 97 career games with 29 starts and has totaled 792 rushes for 3,285 yards (4.1 avg.) and 24 touchdowns, while catching 158 career passes for 1,301 yards (8.2 avg.) and three touchdowns. He has also recorded 33 kickoff returns for 667 yards (20.2 avg.). Last season with Oakland, Jordan played in 12 games with seven starts and ran the ball 144 times for 549 yards (3.8 avg.) and three touchdowns while catching 28 passes for 247 yards (8.8 avg.). He was released by the Raiders on Friday, July 25, 2008. Jordan was selected by the Jets in the second round (49th overall) of the 2001 NFL Draft. He spent the first four seasons of his career with New York, playing in 62 games for the Jets while totaling 262 rushes for 1,277 yards (4.9 avg.) and 10 touchdowns. Jordan signed with the Raiders as an unrestricted free agent prior to the 2005 season. That year, he started all 14 games and set a career high with 1,025 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns. He also set career marks in 2005 with 70 receptions for 563 yards and two touchdowns. In 2006, he played in nine games with eight starts for the Raiders and totaled 434 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 114 carries while adding 10 receptions for 74 yards. http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/reiss_pieces/2008/07/pats_sign_rb_la.html

Kevin Jones would have been he guy? You mean the guy the Lions released, that worked out for New England and Pittsburgh and didnt get asked to stick around? If the Lions think he isnt worth a roster spot, I think we know all we need to know.
Lots of opinions about Jordan with little of football substance being said about him.. Jordan would have been a PERFECT back-up for Lewis. Big Back, solid if not spectacular and has proven that he can be productive. I am pretty sure that he would have done okay running behind Steiny and Big Joe. It would have been nice to have a another big guy for to pair with Jamal and just pummel teams in the cold weather games. Can you imagine having Jamal AND Jordan in the backfield at the same time? Benson is still bit intriguing only because of what his upside could be with a change of scenery but I dont think Phil and RAC are looking for projects at the RB position.

"But he is good enough for the patriots.......I love some of the comments on here."
So cause he's signed by the Pats it means he would have been perfect for here.... right back at you.
Pats is a better fit and a different team than us.
1. Faulk got injured. 2. Mulrooney is very talented but has not established himself as a workhorse RB able to take on the load...Jamal Lewis has and will more than likely. 3. The Pats are in an ongoing flow of a dynasty...3 SB rings in 4 shots in 6 seasons...there is a lot more Give and Take allotted with a Dynasty than a team trying to get to that level but have a lot to prove!
So lets see they have more need...the #1 needs to share reps...they have the dynasty status condusive for team unity.
He doesn't fit like a glove in our situation... 1. We have 2 who fit into our system backing up Jamal. 2. Jamal is a workhorse and always have been...an established workhorse! 3. We are still striving to mold our character as a team, sitting idle Jordan is more apt to be a cancer not an asset.
So go on laughing...the Pats picking up Jordan doesn't vindicate a position that we should have. Bring us the football on how it would have...not a see the Pats thought he was worth it so we should have also...that argument is lame cause the situations are very different.
