Bengals waive RB Irons after he fails team physical
Associated Press

CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Bengals waived running back Kenny Irons on Friday after he failed a physical examination earlier this week.

Irons tore a left knee ligament during a preseason game at Detroit in August. The 24-year-old from Dacula, Ga., spent the season on the injured list.

If no other team claims his rights, the Bengals could re-sign Irons and put him on a reserve list. But he would not be eligible to play this season.

Irons was a 2007 second-round draft choice from Auburn.

The team's remaining running backs include starter Rudi Johnson, followed by Kenny Watson, Chris Perry and DeDe Dorsey.

Well, I guess if he failed the physical, that's reason enough but I'm still somewhat surprised at this. He was supposed to be that change-of-pace guy to compliment Rudi Johnson and now his career is definitely in jeopardy after that injury last season. Must have been real bad to still not be back after nearly a year. Judging by the current state of the RB market around the league, I'd say chances are slim to none that he ever plays for another NFL team. What a shame.

Even though he chose to go to Auburn.... He had some talent. Hope he gets healthy.

Thats too bad-- not for the bengals, but for Irons.

I thought he was a decent back at Auburn. Hope he gets a second chance once he's healthy.

I always thought Irons would be a quality NFL back. He looked very good at Auburn.

Good luck Kenny! Rest up and get ready for some tryouts next season.

Wow, that seriously sucks for him. I remember liking him and being sad the Bengals drafted him. Hopefully he can make a comeback in a different uniform.

I never understood why so many ppl were so high on Irons coming out of Auburn. He had like a 4.8 yd per carry avg in college! He was a steady runner but not not an overly great runner or athlete. Never seemed overly explosive to me. I saw him play in like 5 games his last year at Auburn and I never remember him standing out.
Now Wells on the other hand has like a 5.9 yd per carry avg in college for a reference. Just seems in college especially when coming from a bigger school a great rb should have over a 5 yd avg for his career.

That really sucks. I thought he was a talented back. One of those types that could start off as a number 2 back and then eventually become a decent number 1.

I am happy for ANYbody who gets out of Cincytuckee. I thought he was a solid college back sure to be decent in NFL. Getting out from under the Strippes is a good career move.
