Bengals agree to review Johnson's contract after season
By Adam Schefter | NFL.com

Cincinnati and Pro Bowl wide receiver Chad Johnson struck a deal Sunday that really is no deal.

Each side wins. The Bengals get a quieter, happier Johnson in camp, on time, just as he promised; Johnson gets assurances that -- if he is on his best behavior this year on and off the field -- the Bengals will consider reworking his contract.

By agreeing to review Chad Johnson's contract after the season, the Bengals will have two major contract decisions to make next offseason, as T.j. Houshmandzadeh's contract is set to expire at the end of the year. Below are both players' 2007 stats:

It is a gentleman's agreement that prevented any holdout and propelled Johnson into training camp on Sunday, the same day his agent Drew Rosenhaus was spotted in Cincinnati with Bengals officials. Rosenhaus was also seen in Cincinnati during the Bengals' last minicamp.

Rosenhaus, when contacted, declined comment, something Johnson rarely did during an off-season in which he consistently voiced his displeasure with the organization. But in recent weeks, Johnson's tone has changed, and it did so in part because Cincinnati's attitude with him has softened.

At least the Bengals are willing to listen to Johnson and his demands after the season, something they were unwilling to do this offseason.

It's a smart move on Cincinnati's part. After this year, the Bengals can offer Johnson a below-market contract and still live up to their end of the agreement.

But for now, it is a gesture that Johnson apparently appreciates enough to put aside any concerns about his contract and focus on the season ahead.

After this season, Johnson will have two years left on a contract that pays him an average of $6 million per season. These days, after an offseason in which wideouts such as Terrell Owens and Steve Smith were awarded new deals, the league's top receiver deals are earning in the $8- to $9-million-a-year range.

Cincinnati could face a critical negotiation period, not only for Johnson, but for Pro Bowl wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, whose contract expires after this season. But those are issues for another day. For now, the Bengals have done what they can to make promises and peace.

Way to not cave in to the demands of players' currently under contract, Bengals front office!

Of course, I can't blame them. Chad did go about requesting a contract rework the right way.

The Bengals FO are totally assinine. They want to coddle Chris henry and Odell Thurman, but then when the best player on their team for the past what 7 years wants a new deal they balk and play hardball?

They are totally inpet, and Mike Brown needs to be shot. The only reason he is still there is because his last name is Brown.

In this pacticular instance i go along with the Bengals. I don't think you should ever redo a contract that has three years left on it. JMHO.

I agree with that, but it is the standard they are setting. The "Hey we are playing hardball". Public statement, but then out of the sie of their mouth saying "It's ok Chris and Odell, we still love you". If I was a free agent, I would NEVER go to cinci after seeing all of this. My mindset would be "So your going to hardball your best player, but coddle some thugs and let the franchise take a black eye??"

It would be like us resigning Kenny Wright and telling Winslow, "You'll have to wait". It just makes no sense!

1. Chad is not their best player.

2. He has been a problem in the locker room and many of the other players are sick of his crap and what they perceive as special treatment.

3. He handled this ploy for more money horribly, and they should not cater to that type of behavior.

The fact that they are now backing down is what makes them the incredibly inept team that they are.

Well said.

I do think he will be traded next season. TJ can put up the same numbers as CJ, and the organization will have to put up with less crap.

Brown: Here's a deal for you, you tell that big mouth freak show to shut his yapper and play football or else he starts hemorrhaging money.

Rosenhaus: Okay. That sounds good.

Brown: You can tell the press some crap about a deal next year.

Rosenhaus: Great. I'll get right on it.

You know, I totally disgaree. As much as I find Chad Johnson to be a total loser. I don't think for ONE second, that TJ is the WR that Chad is. He certainly doesn't have Chads speed. In fact, I think a lot of TJ's success is DUE TO Chad.

I think if Chad left, that offense even with Palmer, would be even more average than it was last season.

Respectfully, I see it the other way. CJ's succes is due to TJH's abilities. He may not make the same highlight reel plays, but he moves the chains like JJ, and commands enough respect to keep Chad productive.

Botom line: it's the combination of TJ and CJ that makes both so productive.

Hum... Like some here have pointed out... Time and time again... Everything is negotiable... And we are talking about the Nati's... Life isn't always right or fair...

When you are one of the best at what you do, you get paid, very well...

Production and performance causes patience and acceptance... Pain thresholds increase exponentially...

Not here but most other places...

Chad is top one or two talents on the Bengals... No Question... I truly enjoy watching him play and entertain... I don't listen to him talk or interview very often...

I'd have to say that isn't true at all. CJ was a thousand yard, pro bowl type WR before TJ ever had a 500 yard season. I agree they work together, but it is Chad who opens up more for TJ than most realize.

Without the deep threat, the middle is a little more clogged up with safties and backers.

I agree with you about TJ and Chad, but I do think that Carson is by far the most valuable player in that offense.

I know it's a stretch, but I actually think he's the most talented QB in the NFL. He sucks with leadership and presence, but I think his talents are amazing.

I liked this quote from Chad:

Bengals | C. Johnson says he will fight Palmer
Tue, 29 Jul 2008 15:53:05 -0700

TSN reports Cincinnati Bengals WR Chad Johnson (ankle) said him and QB Carson Palmer are going to fight. "Me and Carson, I mean, we're fighting and bickering a lot and he's pissing me off," Johnson said. "But other than that, you know, it's cool." The reporter doing the interview then laughed at Johnson's response but Johnson said he was serious. "Why are you laughing?" he asked. "I'm serious." The reporter responded saying it was hard to tell if he was serious. "I'm serious," Johnson stated again. "Carson and I are going to fight in camp. I'm just telling you now. We're going to frustrate each other, and I'm going to hit him in his knee - the bad one… We have a great relationship but sometimes you fight."

They showed this on ESPN yesterday, but I caught the clip in the middle and had no idea who he was talking about until now.

I agree with what the last guy said, is he mentally retarded?

You're threatening to take out your QB's bad knee???

Great idea, Chad. I'm sure that you'll make the pro bowl for sure this season with whoever is backing Palmer up.
