Earthquake rocks Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- A magnitude-5.8 earthquake has struck just east of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake's epicenter was about 2 miles southwest of Chino Hills and about 5 miles southeast of Diamond Bar, the USGS said. Chino Hills is about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

The center was about 7.6 miles deep. In general, earthquakes centered closer to the Earth's surface produce stronger shaking and can cause more damage than those further underground.

A 5.8 magnitude quake is considered by the USGS to be "moderate," which can cause slight damage to buildings and others structures. About 500 can happen globally each year, the survey says.

CNN's Ed Lavandera was at Disneyland with his family and felt the temblor. He said the shaking lasted about 5 seconds.

There were no immediate reports of injury or damage in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey told The Associated Press. San Bernardino County fire dispatch did not have reports of damage, AP said.

Just sat through it, it was one of the longest I've ever been through, just went on and on... No one seems hurt here in the immediate vicinity, no damage to our place. What a ride.

Definitely a little unsettling.. it was a long one.. I was expecting it to get worse than what it was. I ran out of the house.. LOL.. but it was relatively small.

It was odd ... I'm in northern San Diego, and I barely felt it. The house just sort of creaked, and I never really felt any shaking. My daughter was like, "Mommy's home!", but I was like ... what the heck was that? I didn't feel like an earthquake. The only two other earthquakes I've felt here felt like a large truck rolling by on a bridge or something, this one barely creaked my house.

Busted water main in Chino Hills... some property damage, no major issues, no injuries being reported in Chino Hills, the epicenter or in the county... Seems everyone is okay.

Thanks!

The biggest news now is that they're preempting the soaps to continue coverage. They're reporting police, fire and hospitals are standing by waiting on reports to come in. Of course it's not over yet, but nothing major is being reported.

The fault line it occurred on ran past by where I used to live in Corona.. which is just south of Chino.. and to think I was going to start a post predicting an earthquake around aug 1st lol.. doh!

but I say before end of year the Midwest will have a big one..

Of the three I've felt since I moved here ... the worst one was nothing more than a little rumble. The worst earthquake I've ever been in was actually in Ohio. (5.0 in Mentor)

This 5.8 is the worst I felt.. and I have lived here since 1995.. first one i felt was just 3 bangs on the wall.. woke me up.. though someone was banging on my wall from the outside.. and i was one the second floor.. lol.. this one just was loooong.

Thanks, GB & Jules... Fact of life living out here... fact of life living on the planet, sometimes nature takes a swat at ya. I'm glad it seems everyone is safe. Thank you, everyone, for your concern.

I got knocked down walking along the hall of an office building in Sherman Oaks in '81, blown out of bed in Hollywood a few years later, and then went through horror and aftermath of the Northridge quake. This was nothing by comparison, just long in duration.

I'm out here in upland (just north of Ontario), felt it pretty good. No damage at all around here. Just a fun ride. Glad to hear everyone else is alright also. Been watching the aftershocks (on USGS), but have not felt any of them yet.

Yeah, man... the weather is great. In NW Ohio there were the tornados & winters to contend with... and didn't you see the part about getting blown out of bed in Hollywood?

Glad you all are ok. I'll have to call my Dad and make sure he's ok. He's in Indio, so he probably didn't get much rumbling, but he is laid up, recovering from knee replacement surgery that he had on Monday.

I remember that. i was in 3rd Grade and it scared the hell out of me. It actually cracked the walls at school. I'll never forget it b/c we were getting yelled at for something and all the sudden the world started shaking. Nothing compared to what Cali feels but when your from ohio it sure is.

3rd grade? Youngin'! I was in 7th. And we felt it down here in Cuyahoga Falls. My teacher had lived in So Cal for years before moving here and she told us to get in the doorway. Not sure how she thought 23 kids, plus her were going to fit in 2 doorways...LOL!
