I have been an avid cyclist for many years and just recently decided to switch it up a bit and start running. I was up to about 20 miles a day on my bike, but I can barely do 2.5 while running.

Is anyone else a runner? How long did it take before you got to running a solid mile or 2 without stopping? I know I just started and I shouldn't get frustrated, but it's difficult (plus I don't really enjoy it). I even invested in the Nike+ system to track my progress.

I still plan to bike a few days a week so I don't pull all my hair out.

I'm actually the reverse of you. I ran for the previous 6 years and i started cycling last summer. I do anywhere from 20-80 miles every other day on my bike.

The best advise i could give you is run as far as you can before you feel like you need to stop. The next day, attempt to run further than the previous day even if it is only 25 feet. Eventually you will build your lung capacity and running leg strength and the miles will eventually build upon one another.

The other tip I can give you is to start on as flat of a running surface as you can (like a high school/college track). This allows you to run a steady pace and not have to worry about killing yourself on a hill. Eventually when you build up your stamina the hills will become a challenge that you can attack, but until you become a long distance runner and have some miles under your belt, hills will only hurt your progress

I'm a runner and used to be a triathlete...just started training for my first one in years. Running feels right now feels like I'm cracking the concrete but it'll come back in time. It's the best exercise in the world, just hard when you're not in top shape.

Many years ago I was a marathon runner, way before beer and cig's! Ran in over 50 marathon's, longest was 20 miles. Ran track and cross country in school. Only advice I can give you is to take it slow at 1st. dont run flat footed, and stretch before and after. Find a pace that suetes you.
your running should be smooth and natural. Not pressing.

Couchgirl -

I too just began running again at the top of April after a LONG hiatus. After running 3-4 days a week, between 1-2 miles a day, for about 2-3 weeks, my stamina began to pick up pretty quickly. I'm now doing about 22-24 miles week, usually 4-5.5 a day, 4-5 days a week. Allows me to drink and eat my face off on the weekends, and still lose some weight while doing it. Since I began, I've dropped 50 pounds, down from 225 to 175.

Where do you find the time to go 20-80 miles? I get bored after an hour.

I run on the treadmill at the gym, at my age I had to start slow and I would just try to run from a specified time, then each day try to beat it by 1 minute.

Doctor keeps telling me I have acute asthma, and I always told him he's crazy, I'm starting to believe he is right, I run short of breathe very suddenly, and at times feel like my lungs are going to pop.

Funny time for this topic to pop up. I havnt ran for several years, since I got out of the Marines. I bought a pair of new balance running shoes this evening and plan on starting in the morning. Im gonna have to start in short distances because of all the hills around my house. Im not gonna over do it but Im sure as hell gonna push myself. I was never the best runner but I did run 5k in under 20 minutes while still active duty. Have fun and dont over do it and remember to hydrate properly.

Trust me, I wish I didn't have to but the biking has plateaued a little bit.

Not a runner per se, but I bought some new Balance and have begin running in addition to my lifting.

Not a marathon runner or anything, but I have added running to my routine.

What is this "running" that you speak of?

Haven't ever really done any serious running and now can't due to knee issues. I'm more of a walker.

Running is a lot harder than biking IMO... I am a runner who picked up biking as cross training and found biking very easy as compared to running... I was up to 70 miles or so on biking before I decided to focus on running again (and currently on a exercise break).

Don't get frustrated... just takes some time and putting in the miles. Really what you want to do for your long runs is get into a nice conversation pace... basically get into a speed where you can still hold a conversation comfortablly if need be... you really want to make sure you have good shoes, are running on a good surface, and stay relaxed.

Are you training for something specific or just running for the fun of it?

And like I said, don't equate bike miles to running miles... there's a reason why you bike 80 miles or so in a triatholon and only run like 6.

The first thing you should do is make sure you have very good shoes to wear. Saucony is the best running shoes on the market, at least according to people I trust. They are not overly expensive. Also many shoes are rated for the amount of running yo do a week (or at least they use to).

I suggest that you don't worry about distance, at least not at first. Concentrate on running a set amount of time until you get into running shape. If you have been biking a lot it shouldn't take but a few weeks.

Before I can give you any real advice, I need to know what your goals are. You say your only around 2.5 miles a day. How many do you wish to run?

Are you looking towards competing, or just changing your routine from biking?

I'm in the proccess of training the son of a friend who will be attending the Citadel this fall. He gets graded on his 2 mile conditioning test, so I have had him doing speed and hill work to drop his time. Obviously this isn't the stuff you need if you are just trying to increase distances.

marathons are 26 miles--did you do 20 milers in addition to the 26.2 mile beast?

I ran XC and track in high school. I HATED high school with a passion, unlike Ammo. But what kept me alive--literally--was my artwork and track and XC running. Best was 18:53 for a 5k--but that was awhile back. It wasn't that great because there were dudes that ran 15:45 and girls that ran sub-19 easily in our region (Division II, Northeast District). West G has not had a good XC team since the '80s.

The key to being a good beginning runner is to build up an endurance base. Don't go for time--go for distance. Even if you start out a 2-miler at 18:30 that's not that bad (9:15/mi pace). The key is to get through your runs without quitting and without injuring yourself. Aerobic benefits take about 7-10 days to be realized, so if you stick with it three weeks you should feel more energetic even 10 days into the program.

When you are ready and are doing about 20-25 mi/week tackle some hills--but no more than one hill day per week. Then when you're confident at that, take on a long run (9-10 miles). If you start building your mileage on a weekly basis, scale back every 3-4 weeks to guard against overtraining. And always take one day off per week and cycle or swim or walk--keep your legs and knees in good shape.

The systerm that I've described is called an Arthur Lydiard system--he was a well-known runner from New Zealand who believed that a high mileage base of "easy" miles enabled the body to handle long-distance running. Speedwork (sprints and intervals) that you need in order to tune up for a race should be applied sparingly and only after you've developed a solid base. Do the speedwork 3-4 weeks prior to the race but back off during race week.

It's like building a house--your base mileage is the foundation, boring but solid. Your hillwork and speedwork are the frame and walls, and racing is the final piece--the roof--that covers it all.

Good luck! If you have questions PM me. There's great running clubs in Northeast Ohio if you're inclined.

I gave her some advice, but I hope she doesn't remember what I look like. I was giving running tips to a bunch of the kids on the cross country team and one of my kids friends asked "You mean you were able to run distances?" After I knocked him on his ass I told him I wasn't always fat.

I always thought I was pretty good... except we had the 4 time state champ in XC in my conference... so he wasted me weekly in high school - dude's best was like a 15:30 or something in high school... my best in high school was 16:48 or somewhere around there... got down to low 16s for my split in the 8k in college though...

I much preferred track though... was mainly a half miler, but ran anything the coach wanted me to.

I was actually thinking about starting to run. It's a exactly a mile if I start at my apartment and run towards the lake and back down. I would much rather start riding a bike though to be honest b/c I hate running. Anytime I got in trouble in football I had to run. I was forced to run in the military. I don't look at it as fun but a hassle
I really want to start trying to though real soon.

Running is tough that's for sure. Keep it up, you will have so much more energy and feel better about yourself overall.

I run 21 miles a week (3 or so a day). I run pretty fast (because I don't think I can run for hours on end). On average I run about 20 minutes a day.

I probably could if i was forced to. I usually go 20 miles in 1 hour and 20 minutes. I went 56 miles last monday in 3 hours and 23 minutes and 83 miles in a little under 6 hours.

Earlier in the thread you said biking is easier than running. I would put biking to running at a 8:1 ratio, i felt like i ran 10 miles after i rode the 83 miles

I run 4-5 days a week. I love to run the mile and my asthma really won't let me run much more then that so I'm not interested in long distance. I got my mile time down from 10 mins to 6:39 in 3 weeks by doing this..
I usualy run sunday tuesday wed friday & sometimes saturdays. then I walk a mile the other days. I stretch before and after. I walk 1/4 mile to warm up I run 1 mile then I walk 1/4 mile then sprint 1/4 mile then walk 1/4 mile then run 1/2 mile and walk 1/2 mile then sprint 1/4 mile and cool down walk 1/4 mile. I run outside and yes I figured out where all the distances are by landmarks lol I usually feel great after the second sprint then I do some situps usally 30-50 and then take a cold shower. I caugh an interview once with Emmit Smith and he said it's better to take cold shower to help your body recoup after working out so I've always done that and it really did seem to help.

I like to use this website to track my times and it's full of useful info

No competing, just changing it up a bit.

I'd like to be able to do about 5 miles a day.... I think that to me would be considered success. Or, at least do as much as I can in about an hour or a little more. Right now I can only do about 40 minutes before I'm wiped.

When I was biking I was out for an hour and a half so this is a system shock.

being an ex-ranger, i know a thing or two about running..lol, besides that, i was on the army 10miler team and ran my share of marathons. Depending on your goals the biggest 2 things are patience and breathing. Everyone always ask me while we sing cadence while running, 2 things uniformity and it actually helps breath managment..i tell people sing a little song or something while running. When training for marathons i never trained more than 3 miles. They would be 3 mile sprints if you will. patience is key because it won't happen overnight, doing something like running stairs or indian runs (jog, sprint, jog, sprint) will help get your endurance up. Never really rode a bike, but it sounds like you have quite a bit, so you obviously learned how to manage your air while riding, running is the same, but you'll have to do new things to manage it. So start with some high intensity interval type running a couple times a week and mix in endurance runs. if your goal is endurance runs you'll notice by doing the interval training with them you'll see great gains on your endurance runs

that's awesome.
my problem also is that I'm 5'1'' so an 18:53 is pretty good with short legs. I don't know how tall you are, but another 5-6 inches would have helped my XC career. If I was 5'8'' I probably would've broken 17:30. When I ran our team had to do a required 250-300 miles over the summer to build up a base and show up in shape. I miss XC.

I used to like signing cadence when we ran. it took my mind off how much it sucked running before I left for the service I ran every morning before school. A friend gave me a tape of military cadences that I would listen to and it really helped keep me motivated on why I was running.

What do you guys think would be better for someone with a messed up back? Running or riding a bike? I am thinking bike b/c my left leg is also effected and hurts me everyday and I think the stress on my back/legs might be more harm than good no? At least with a bike I don't have that downward shock as I take each step. If my back gets bad I am on crutches for at least 3 days and I don't want that to happen to me if I'm out running somewhere. Or, am I all wrong about this?

If you have a messed up back, running is not for you. The impacts from running would make you miserable as hell.
Biking would be good, eliptical would be better.... swimming would be best.

I stared heavily working out again about three months ago. I always dabble here and there and play basketball, but I am not running. My knees started hurting when I got to about 8 minute miles, so I went and purchased some New Balance shoes because when I fatuige I run on my heels and it is horrible for my knees. They hurt a lot less now, but I would love to not run on my heels...

For anyone running biking.. who don't want to spend an arm and a leg... or don't want to drive after working out to figure out the distance they just went. I use this to map out my runs...

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

You can even save routes... I usually run 3-4 times a week. 3 miles each time. Not much of a runner. Never was built for it. I run 3 miles in about 24-25 minutes comfortably now. Didn't start that way though. Started running 2 years ago when I found out I became a type 1 diabetic. Probably took me about 3 - 4 months before I could run a solid 3 miles. Now I just stay there as it seems to stress me enough and I'm not looking to break any land records. Any more miles or days is too much stress on my body. Again not built for it... too much of a pounding with my clunky stride. On off days I do something different... like lifting, playing softball, or my life long passion, hockey.

yeah being in the military its hard to change the way you run, esp since they put emphasis on driving your heels. running on the balls of your feet are preferable but you should run what feels natural, i blew out my knee on a jump in 2001 and pretty much thought i'd never be the runner i was. I used to run a 9 minute or so 2 mile for PT test. But you'd be surprised what your body can do..If you are going to try to keep running get GOOD shoes..makes a world of difference..I've run in 18 marathons and i never wear anything but NB. They make a GREAT running shoe. But if running really hurts, i would try elliptical, bike would work too. But if you want to overcome pain while running. i recommend a couple months of a plyometric routine.. Plyo will strengthen muscles and increase flexibility in joints. Thats how i got back after my knee operation. Not only that, but i actually was able to dunk a basketball for the first time in my life after plyo. I still do it 1 or 2 times a week
