IWhat do you guys think would be better for someone with a messed up back?

My wife recently had back surgery and the phsical therapist told her the best thing for her would be to run steps because you areon your toes and you didnt get the impact on yor spine of running on flat ground.

Are you training for something specific or just running for the fun of it?

I never thought to see those two words in the same sentence.

I try to stay in shape, mostly play alot of pick-up, old-man, basketball.

Was in the Army and played football for quite some time, but still, NEVER put those two words in the same sentence.

how do you get in the nike plus program? do you have to already have an iPod to hook up to your Nike shoes or do you have the wristband one?

I do run with Nike+ running shoes (the ones where you have a sensor and use it with your Nano). It's not 100% accurate, but close enough. I suppose its like using a bathroom scale that's 5 pounds off. It's not good for determining exact weight for the day.....but over time, you can see changes. Each month I drop about 10-15 seconds off my average mile pace.

I would really like to run more. I average two 5K's per week (I'm 35-years old too). I'm in the 23 minute area (7:30/mile). I try to only run on a treadmill to protect against shin splints (which I get often - and I know about the new shoes concept). I think my running style creates the problem, not the shoes. I've been following a Brady Quinn running tip where he does toe lifts throughout the day (at your desk, on the John, watching TV...). It strengthens your lower legs and helps prevent pronation. My shins have held up longer than any other period in my life.

I have a ton of lifting questions....but I won't start them here. I don't want to hijack the thread.

What is this "running" that you speak of?

If it wasn't for running my mouth and jumping to conclusions, I wouldn't get any exercise at all.

Haven't ever really done any serious running and now can't due to knee issues. I'm more of a walker.

Ever try the elliptical, Babe? No impact on the knees.

I have one of those in my basement. Those are miserable too!

I hate the ellipticals ... they just don't feel natural at all.

I had some major knee issues with my bike as well, but then went in for a professional fit. Turns out my bike seat was like two inches too low. They say a quarter inch can make a big difference, so a 2 inch difference would really mess up my joints. they also made minor adjustments on the pedals and seat, and it feels 200% better now, My knee problems went away completely.

You have to get the sensor for the shoes and either the iPod or the wristband. After that, it's free. Everything is tracked online.

I'm with you, it's not fun. My boss seems to think I'll change my mind. She's a psycho running fanatic.... she does 7-10 miles a day (and she's 54!!)

To 337---
With your Back, I wouldn't suggest running right away anyway....There is a lot of jarring going along, especially when starting out, that could cause problems for you. But to start with biking and then move into running(especially if on sand like at a beach) that could be a good way to ease you into it.

gen rply---
With me personally, I was a pretty good runner....many years and many pounds ago.(16:30's 5k(HS) 1:56 1/2 mile) But bad knees and bad dietary habits give me the body I have today...LOL. But I would love to get back to doing 20+ miles a week.

The way I am now that won't happen by me just going out and running. If I did , I would cause more injury and more setbacks. I will start with some strength training and losing some of this fat that I am carrying. That way there is not all that extra momentum(to put it politely) causing more impact into my bad knees and such when I do start. I will get on the bike to start as it will be easier on my knees and this area has great hills for cardio. I also really enjoy the bike too. Eventually I will move onto a HS track. The tracks have a little better cushioning than a straight paved surface. And from there to the roads.

PDawg did hit on a good point. Shoes are important. But don't get caught with this brand or that brand. Well that isn't quite right. There are definitely some brands that make better running shoes than others. Nike, Saucony, Asics, New Balance, etc....But don't dismiss one brand because someone else said this one is the best. You have to use the one that works best for you. For me. I HAD to use the Nike Air MAX when I was running. And I would blow out at least 2 pairs every year...but they were the best thing on my feet when I was running distances......I tried Asics Gell, and others...but the Nike's alway fit my foot the best(I have narrow feet). For Some New Balance can't be beat...others the Asics, etc....Use the ones thet feel the best for you.

Everyone always ask me while we sing cadence while running, 2 things uniformity and it actually helps breath managment..i tell people sing a little song or something while running.

I remembered to try this today when I was out running and it REALLY helped me a lot, so thank you. If I can keep doing that then maybe I can keep going longer and longer distances.

Hello all,

I just got back into running after a two-year hiatus July 12. (My best 5k is 18:53, set in 2001 and my 2-mile is 11:30, set in 2002). I'm only 5'2, so I have no stride whatsoever. LOL.
As of Sept. 4, I have run 174 miles, or about 23mpw average, although the last several weeks the mileage is 30-35mpw. Yesterday I ran 8 miles in 90'F weather in 1:01:02, or about 7:38/mile, in non-shady areas in Chardon.

My baseline training pace in cool weather (65'F) last week is about the same time, so I'm pumped for fall and faster times. Normally, in good weather, it should be 7:15 or 7:20. But neither time is race pace.

What's awesome is that when I started out I was at 9:05/mi pace and now I'm down to 7:40 just based on Lydiard base-building.

I am training for a 5k on Oct. 11 as well as a 5-miler on Nov. 27. (The Cleveland Ohio Turkey Trot). I'd like to break 18:49 for the 5k and 30 flat for the 5-miler. I do not know where I would finish if I ran a 5k today because I'm doing tempos, hills and baseline (aerobic) endurance.

Three questions actually:

When should I start doing doubles?
I run about 30-35 mpw, as noted. Doubles would at least get me up to 50 to 55 mpw. Is it smarter just to do lots of 8-milers per day instead of two four-milers per day? Or should I just make my long run go from 8-10 miles to 12-14 miles?

Another question: When I should start doing intervals on the track?
I have been using some tempo runs within my long runs, which are 8-10 miles. My normal training runs are 3 to 5 miles. I have emphasized weekly hill training from the start and am in week 7 of my training. What about weights?

A final question: For the intervals, should I go with 800 or mile repeats?
(either 6x800 or 4x1600). I'm staying away from the 200-400m because those are too short. I'm looking at about a 400m recovery time for 800m repeats and 800m recovery for the mile repeats.

I guess the real question is what is what is the purpose for your training???

Are you trying to be competitive at a specific distance, several distances, or just trying to stay in shape and running as a hobby.

Some of your questions can be answered depending upon the distance you are training for...5K and 10K are 2 completely different races. (yes I know you said 5 miles but the norm is 10K) While the training can be similar it will vary some depending on the one you want to focus more on.

For instance, your LSD's (Long Slow Distances for you non runners reading....not drugs...lol) can be a little shorter and slightly slower for the 5K training. You can do 8-12 mile jaunts instead of 12 to 18 mile pacers for the 10K.

However conversly your intervals, anaerobics, and straight distances will be at a much faster pace and probably more of them (Especially of the shorter distances like the half mile and quarter).

The other big thing is timing. You don't want to be doing your heavy conditioning the week of the start of the race season....lol. and you don't want to be pounding on your anaerobics at the end of the season. You will also want to mix up you hard workout days so that you are not doing the same routine all of the time. And for goodnes sake.....LOG YOUR TIMES!!!! If you are trying to be competitive....this alone can be one of your biggest tools in your training.

I am not sure I answered your questions in the way you wanted but hopefully it helped some.....There are some great magazines out there that do have some great routines and workout schedules for getting ready for different races, so check those out.....Good Luck!!!!

You've hit on a lot of things I am doing now...
I ran XC in HS, quit running during college except for the occasional 5k in the summer. Came back home in 2006, trained 150 miles for Pen Glen in August (as a Mentorite you probably know what Penitiary Glen is) and raced well.

Quit running due to some personal issues until July, then came back with a bang. 175 miles in almost 2 months.

I'm focusing on the 5k...the 5mi Turkey Trot's not a good distance--I'd rather have 10k.
