Notes: Rogers continues to impress
Steve King, Staff Writer
07.30.2008
Wednesday morning was a time for the unusual at Browns training camp.

It rained during a practice for the first time.

Defensive lineman Shaun Rogers, the biggest player on the team in the neighborhood of 350 pounds, worked at catching balls off the jugs machine, as if he were a wide receiver.

And NFL officials made their annual stop at camp to work practices and advise players and coaches of rule changes.

Business as usual.

The Browns had six practices rained out in last year's camp, a club record, but had been blessed by Mother Nature so far in 2008. That changed when it came down -- relatively hard for a time -- for about 14 minutes an hour into the two-hour practice.

But the Browns ignored it and played on, and by the end of the practice, the sun had reappeared.

"It was good for us to get our feet and work with a wet ball," Browns head coach Romeo Crennel said.

The Browns were practicing on a field that had been re-done in the offseason. As such, they didn't want to tear it up, but that wasn't going to happen as long as the field didn't get saturated. Good drainage prevented that from happening and sending them to their indoor practice field.

Defensive lineman Shaun Smithand outside linebacker Antwan Peek were both held out of the morning practice because of knee soreness. Smith was back for the afternoon session; Peek was not.

QUITE A SHOW: For a few minutes after practice, Rogersactedas ifhe was Paul Warfield, even catching some passes off the jugs machineone-handed.

Rogers wants to make sure that he can continue to be able to hold onto the ball. In a practice last week, he tipped a pass, intercepted it and took off for the end zone, screaming all the while. No one was about to get into the big man's way -- not in a camp practice, at least.

Large and athletic, Rogers has been called -- in a good way -- "a beast" by some of his teammates.

"I'm not going to call him a beast because I'd like to keep coaching," he joked. "I'm going to tell him I like him."

The way he's performing in his first year with the Browns after arriving in a trade with the Detroit Lions -- he might be the most impressive player in camp thus far -- Rogers is easy to like.

Crennel thinks he can be a real force with the Browns.

"Shaun's not the sole focus of attention on this team," Crennel said "He's just another member of the team."

Maybe not just another member of the team completely, for he is, after all, just about exactly halfway between 300 and 400 pounds. That's a full 35 pounds heavier than offensive lineman Ryan Tucker, no small man himself. But we understand what the coach is saying.

GUYS IN STRIPES: As for the officials, it wasn't long before they heard it from the fans. It happened when quarterback Brady Quinn tried to hit tight bend Brad Cieslak as he ran up the middle of the field. Cieslak's legs got tangled up with those of safety Mike Adams and he tripped and fell down, causing the ball to sail over his head incomplete.

No flag was thrown. What some unhappyfans didn't realize is that the officials weren't supposed to throw any flags during the practice.

"The officials are just to talk to the guys and tell them if there would have been a penalty on the play," Crennel said.

LOCAL CONNECTIONS: One of the officials working practice was line judge Mark Steinkerchner. A resident of the Akron suburb of Bath Township who operates a rubber products factory in Wadsworth, he was, for years, the only NFL official from Northeast Ohio. He was joined last year by referee John Parry of the Akron suburb of Tallmadge.

Steinkerchner said he and his crew are slated to work the Browns' preseason finale against the Chicago Bears on Aug. 28 at Cleveland Browns Stadium. The crew's regular-season schedule won't be released until later in the preseason. Steinkerchner and his crew will meet with the media on Thursday to answer questions.

CAMPER OF THE DAY: Because he wears the same number, 28, that former Browns cornerback Leigh Bodden donned for five seasons, it's easy to think that it's still Bodden out there every time Jereme Perry makes a play. Perry is doing some good things in his second stint with the Browns. In the morning, he made a nice hit on wide receiver Efrem Hill. The Browns are looking for help at cornerback. Perry is doing his best to take advantage of the opportunity.

PLAYS OF THE DAY: Rookie free agent left guard Derrick Morse of Miami (Fla.) showed his athleticism when he ran 20 yards downfield to block for Donte' Stallworth after the wide receiver made a catch. ... Ouch. Not seeing any receivers open, Quinn threw the ball away. It whistled into the stands and bounced off the chest of a man who tried to make the catch. ... Quinn was right on target to Hill on a comeback route along the sideline. ... Rookie inside linebacker Beau Bell knocked a blocker back into Quinn just as he was throwing. The ball fluttered to the ground. ... Linebacker Shantee Orr smelled out a screen pass and hit running back Travis Thomas just as he caught the ball. ... Safety Nick Sorensen intercepted a Quinn pass that was intended for wide receiver Steve Sanders, the Cleveland East High School product.

FAN-TASTIC: The morning session attracted 2,685, the fourth-biggest crowd in 10 camp practices thus far.

ONE MAN'S OPINION: It's fortunate that the rain stopped and allowed the Browns to continue practicing outside. Fans travel great distances to come to camp, and, especially with the high cost of gas, you hate to see them being deprived of having the full experience of a visit to Berea. With all the rainouts, last year was a nightmare in that regard.

UP NEXT: The Browns will practice once on Thursday, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., their final session in Berea for Family Night on Friday. Before leaving home, fans are encouraged to check the status of practice by calling the Browns Training Camp Hotline at 1-877-627-6967 (1-877-6BROWNS).

I love hearing that,,,

Sounds like Northcutt is skipping the Jags' camp to watch us.

One week until the preseason starts and I can't wait to see our d-line in action for the first time. I am going in to this season with very high expectations for the line to really help out against both the run and pass. I'm just a little concerned we haven't heard so much about Corey Williams as we have about Rogers.

Corey has been sidelined with a tweaked shoulder since Saturday... when he gets on the field again, we'll be able to hear more.

I'm more bummed that we aren't hearing more about the rookies, particularly Beau Bell, Rucker & Hubbard.

This, he came in as Davis' replacement. While I didn't expect that, I did figure into seeing more coverage on him this training campus.

We're pretty stacked at the moment at ILB anyways but I wanna see some run destruction from him.

Man reading that got me soo pumped. I have high hopes for him and our revamped D-Line.

The secondary is still a ??? but if the D-line can take out the O-line to let the LB's do thier job then I can go play CB for the Browns and it won't matter.

Next year is THIS YEAR!!!!

there is no other position in the 3-4 defense that could actually make an effect on the entire other 10 in design as the NOSE TACKLE...

In the past we have seen this defense try to get on track and on its feet as a Force with.
FISK - Actually put his mark on the Defense in a Negative way.
Ted Washington - first year with us had just a breath of game left - but at least could neutralize the LOS on an occasion or two...the D got a little better.
Kelley- who actually could move that body and finally brought Mediocrity to the position and guess what we were Mediocre as a D.

Now we got Rogers - probably the most Dominant DLman in the NFL today! The one position that can bring the most trickle down effect to the rest of the Defense. And we have some Talent on this D just waiting to BUST OUT...no Peen in a good way lol

I'm so excited I'm scared - although I never get disappointed...I'm scared cause I've never had my expectations "REALLY" this high before

Heck I can't wait for Pre-season so that I can catch a glimpse of him for a series or two ( we better not play him a lot )

There you go with that "bust' stuff again.

I agree about NT. If he can command a double team to neutralize him, darn near every other position on the D is going to benefit in some way...especially the ILBs and defensive backfield.

Just think Eo and Peen,, if he can occupy two O line guys, the other two Dlinemen may be able to collapse the pocket enough that QB's can't step up to avoid our outside rush from Wimbley and whoever is on the other side (Peek/Willie McG).

Is your mouth watering yet

I hate to nit-pick,well maybe I don't.
Rogers will be the main man in stopping the run,and by all accounts he will be a force.
The key to Wimbley and the pass rush, will be Williams. If he is as advertized, opposing O's will have to account for him. That takes a lot of pressure and blockers off of Wimbley.
I hate to start getting giddy, but two damned good GM's,Green Bay's in franchising him and Savage for snatching him,see somthing special in the guy.
If the two corners stay healthy, this will be a good defense.

Rucker has been amazing. Catching everything in site getting time at TE, in the slot and out wide. He will be on the field this season.

Ceilask or however u spell his name is about to send Dinkins packing. Yay lol

Bell is beginning to react instead of think. Blasting his way into playing time contention.

Hubbard will be headed to the PS. He does everything well but catch lol. Just think 4 years ago he would have been our #1 lmao

I don't disagree with you.. But we were discussing Rogers and what he means to the team in an overall sense.. He takes up two blockers, leaving room for everyone around him to collapse the pocket. Pocket collapes and the QB can't step up to avoid the sack as they did all last year.

Which I personally think is the reason that Wimbleys sack totals were down. But that's just me.

As for defending the run.. I got no argument with your comments..

and yea, you do love to nitpick,, don't we all

Well, I just listened to the last two pressers of RAC from July 29 and 30. RAC doesn't call him a beast, like Steinbach (I think) did, but you can tell he's very pleased with the effort Rogers is giving. Let's hope it continues for 16 plus games.

What's up with these young guys that can't seem to figure out how to catch the ball? I don't get it, I mean, they've been WR's most of, or all of, their playing careers.

'Big Baby' Rogers making a huge (positive) impression on Browns teammates
by Mary Kay Cabot Wednesday July 30, 2008, 7:02 PM

When Browns center Hank Fraley heard that Shaun Rogers was traded to Cleveland instead of Cincinnati, he profusely thanked coach Romeo Crennel for seeing to it that Fraley didn't have to face Rogers twice a year.
There was only one small detail that Fraley forgot.

"I was only going to see him twice a year," said Fraley. "Now I've got to see him every day in practice."

What a super-sized order that's been for Fraley, to try to hold off a 350-pound two-time Pro Bowler with a Mt. Rushmore-sized chip on his shoulder twice a day in the sweltering heat.

"Oh man, it's frustrating," said Fraley, who's at least 40 pounds lighter than Rogers. "You don't see a guy like that everyday. He's a beast. I'm getting worn out, but it's a good thing for me because it's just making me better too. If you can handle him, you can handle pretty much anybody else."

Just how good is Rogers, the eighth-year pro who was acquired in the trade for Leigh Bodden and a third-round pick?

"I'd have to say he's got to be one of the best if not the best defensive tackle in the NFL," said Fraley, a nine-year veteran. "And I know he's adjusted to the nose well. I don't think it's changed his play at all. But hopefully we're making him better too."

Fraley isn't the only one honing his skills on Big Baby. The Browns are moving Rogers up and down the line, exposing all of the linemen to his brute force. It's made the battle in the trenches one of the most exciting in camp, with neither unit dominating.

"He's had an awesome camp," said left tackle Joe Thomas. "He's one of the elite defensive tackles in the NFL. He's 350 pounds and he runs like he's 260. There's nobody in the NFL that's going to be bigger, stronger or faster than him, so it's really getting us ready for the season."

Rogers displayed his athleticism in practice on Friday when he tipped a Brady Quinn pass at the line of scrimmage, hauled it in, rumbled around the corner, and stiff-armed fullback Lawrence Vickers for extra yards. After being mauled by his teammates, he performed a dance move with Robaire Smith that was choreographed during minicamp.

After practice on Wednesday, Rogers spent a few minutes on the JUGS pass-catching machine -- an activity usually reserved for receivers and defensive backs. He caught about seven of the 10 balls spit out, with one going off his fingertips.

"I was just messing around," he said. "I always like to have fun, do something to break up the monotony. [On a scale from 1-10], I'm about a 6 right now. But I can get up to a 10 at any given moment. You guys caught me on my first day."

If there's one thing that stands out about Rogers at this camp is that he's having a blast. He's always goofing around with the other linemen such as his good buddy Shaun Smith, who conducted a mock interview with him on Wednesday. He passed all his running drills with ease and he's practicing with a high motor.

It's a dramatic departure from the second half of last season, when he was described as a slacker during the Lions' 1-7 slide. He clashed with coach Rod Marinelli and his weight ballooned. When he was traded, one columnist described him as an "overweight, part-time impact player nearing 400 pounds with withering cartilage in his knees and a slothful work ethic."

He's been anything but those things here.

"He knows it's a fresh start for him more than anything," said Robaire Smith. "All the defensive linemen go out to eat and that's the one thing he constantly talks about. I think a lot of people have gotten the wrong perspective of him already. He's not the type of guy that people try to make him out to be. He knows this is his chance to rebuild all that and I think that's what he wants."

Rogers, he said, became the scapegoat for everything that went wrong in Detroit over the years.

"When you're the best player on the team, of course it's going to fall back on you," said Smith. "Basically he was the only one on that defense to me that was doing something. Who else are you going to point fingers at?"

The addition of Rogers and Corey Williams has helped make the defensive front a close-knit unit, much like the offensive line was last year.

"I promise you, whenever we're together, Shaun says he's having way more fun than he did since he's been in the league," said Smith. "That's a good thing for us. We've got to make sure he stays that way."

Perhaps the best part for Rogers is that he's not as highly-scrutinized or relied upon here as he was in Detroit.

"I'm not going to take that load on all myself," he said. "I'm an added piece to hopefully what is a beautiful puzzle."

I would expect Joe to hold up about as well as Steinbach. Remember that Thomas' value lies in his technique and his agility, not his power. If I had money on who's going backwards it's not going to be bet on Rogers going backwards.

But remember Thomas sees exactly ZERO of those players at his position so it's a moot point anyway.

It would be funny to see Rogers blow him up though!

I personally think that Rogers would've have been unhappy in criminasty, given the cancerous nature of their clubhouse. JMHO, but that organization is a complete failure, and I'm sure Rogers himself had a lot to do with why the trade fell through. Putting your "fanhood" aside, could anyone honestly say that if the bungles weren't their only choice of signing with or being traded to that they would be your 1st choice?

The main site actually showed a picture of the two grappling. They could see each other on sweeps and especially if Rogers lines up at DE on passing downs.

"The key to Wimbley and the pass rush, will be Williams. If he is as advertized, opposing O's will have to account for him. That takes a lot of pressure and blockers off of Wimbley."

I could be wrong but Robaire Smith will continue to be the DE on Wimbley's side - same as last season with no change there. Williams I believe will be on the strongside along with McG.

But the 2 keys that can benefit Wimbley most on his pass rush.
1. and in this order...middle penetration (collapse of the pocket) Rogers - there were around 10 near sacks last season where the QB feeling Wimbley coming simply stepped up into the pocket and avoided Wimbley as he was guided past the pocket and just unable to get his hand on the QB. With middle penetration that option is not there.

2. Equal pressure from the opposite Edge so that the QB cannot simply start to roll out to the right to buy time instead there might be occasion now that he has to put the ball down and look to his left - Splat! Wimbley's there!

None of that was present last season. Hopefully we have a grasp on that...but again we see an injury to Peek. Hall is the only hope we got in a surprise that is. McMillan, McG and I'm sorry I can't expect much from Shantee Orr, but the other two we sort of know what we got. McMillan - hasn't brought it yet and McG only has a certain amount of rushes left in his legs.

Putting your "fanhood" aside, could anyone honestly say that if the bungles weren't their only choice of signing with or being traded to that they would be your 1st choice?

The Bengals would not be my first choice as they are today. But if they were my only choice and I had a dream of playing in the NFL,, then I'd go there..

I'm really confused by the problems they continue to have in cinci... I mean, listen to Marvin Lewis and you can see he's a decent guy. How did he ever let the crazies run the asylum?

PLAYS OF THE DAY: Rookie free agent left guard Derrick Morse of Miami (Fla.) showed his athleticism when he ran 20 yards downfield to block for Donte' Stallworth after the wide receiver made a catch. ...

As far as the play of the day, I would have to agree that it was the play of the day. I was questioning myself though, who is #74 and would he have been penelized for illegal man downfield. i was sitting right behind the play when it happened and on the ground, so i didnt have the best view to see how far downfield the lineman was.

Also didnt see the ball go off the guys chest.

As far as traveling a great distance to watch a practice (about an hour drive for me), and gas prices, I had to fill up when I saw BP (between TC and the highway) was selling gas at $3.56. Thats sad to say I was excited to see gas at $3.56 and fill up. I was actually thinking about getting a grade up, which was the price of unleaded by me.

ON THE LINE; DAY THREE

By Brent Sobleski

Posted Aug 2, 2008

Trench warfare, Sobleski-style. In his continuing series, Brent breaks both sides of the Browns' lines, giving insight as to how these crucial units are coming together and progressing.

On the Line

Day 3 (Saturday): Double sessions returned in full force during a muggy and humid Berea day. The initial practice was in full pads but the tone was much slower than seen earlier in the week. The second practice was in shorts and shells with a few spirited sessions but relatively slow overall. Minor injuries have mounted among the team so changes have been made to the depth chart and some individuals are receiving more and more repetitions. Furthermore, head coach Romeo Crennel felt the need to rest some veteran plays making both sides of the line relatively thin for portions of the day.

Defensive Line

Louis Leonard - Two different Louis Leonard’s appeared through two separate sessions. In the former session, the nose tackle looked sluggish and slow off the line of scrimmage. Come the latter and he came off the line with some explosion and quickness. Inconsistency has plagued the young defensive lineman early in camp.

Chase Pittman -With Robaire Smith and Corey Williams on the sidelines for the second practice, Pittman was rewarded as he moved up to the first defensive unit alongside the two Shaun’s. Still his game looked limited, playing high and giving up his chest to offensive linemen throughout the day.

Melila Purcell - The defensive end was totally invisible throughout the day. Watching two full practices and yet nothing of note comes to mind.

Shaun Rogers - After a dominant showing Friday, the larger than life Rogers kept up his superb play. It has to be noted how bull strong the nose tackle appears while watching his play. He has literally lifted first unit offensive lineman off the ground to plant them. One play in particular during the second session, Eric Steinbach was almost taken off his feet while Rogers merely had a single big paw on the lineman’s chest . Two areas of slight concern through the day was the big defensive lineman’s ability to consistently work up the field while being moved laterally, and at times getting entangled in blocks without successfully fighting off of them. Issues which are minute compared to his overall spectacular play of the last few days.

Ahtyba Rubin - Though certainly looking the part of a nose tackle, Rubin has not been much of a force at the point of attack. In particular he also struggled mightily when asked to move laterally surrendering cutback lanes for the running backs.

Brian Schaefering - Mysteriously absent in the morning practice, the hardnosed defensive end returned for the team’s second session. In such short time, he did not make much of an impression but there might be a concern about his inability to get off blocks consistently.

Robaire Smith - After a nondescript morning session, the veteran was given the afternoon off from the team’s second session.

Shaun Smith - It has been noted in earlier reports, Smith has not shown the best repatoire of moves but he has continued to play with leverage. Smith consistently got under his blocker’s pads, gets extension, and reestablishes the line of scrimmage. Each practice to date has shown Smith’s quickness, strength, and *vocal* leadership. Interestingly the defense Saturday showed a wrinkle with both Smith and Rogers angling on the nose taking advantage of their athleticism and quickness off the snap.

Corey Williams - During the initial session there was one play in particular with Williams‘ play which stuck out. One of the hardest blocks for an defensive lineman to work against is a down block by a tackle when the hat read of the guard is also a down block. Williams had trouble fighting off the block and needed to get lower to fight the pressure. As the practices have commenced to date, the free agent acquisition has had a little trouble on his reads even though the physical talent is readily apparent. Williams was one of the veterans given the rest of the day off.

Offensive Line

Nate Bennett - Just a nasty blocker who loves to bury his opponents. In particular he drove Louis Leonard off the ball, knocking the nose tackle’s helmet off in the process. The young undrafted rookie has yet to give up on block until the whistle blows. Through the two sessions Bennett was seen at both guard and right tackle.

Hank Fraley - Seeing different fronts on the day from the newly minted defensive line gave the offensive line some fits. It is surprising to see a few missed line calls by the veteran that allowed interior defensive linemen to come free to the quarterback. In dealing with the exceptional play of both Shaun Rogers and Shaun Smith, it has become obvious the veteran center is not the strongest at the point of attack and has trouble anchoring against the bigger opponents.

Lennie Friedman - Again the veteran spent his day at center and had a highlight reel block against Shaun Smith. The interior blocker was actually able to get under Smith’s pads, drive him off, and into the ground.

Rex Hadnot - It was apparent during the day’s practices, Hadnot was still hampered by a slight ankle injury suffered earlier. Moving in space was laborious for the guard but he was effective when asked to trap down the line of scrimmage.

James Lee - Overall technique on this day was lacking for the young man. The former Georgia transfer committed too early, turning his shoulders and giving up his post leg, which multiple defenders took advantage. Often the tackle was too willing to accept the blow instead of delivering one. Again showed good physical tools by coming off the ball with a quick first step.

Cliff Louis - Has found himself on the outside looking in as the team’s third string tackle. The young offensive lineman spent plenty of extra time working on technique after practice.

Seth McKinney - Continued to receive repetitions at right guard along the second unit but left the initial practice early due to an ankle sprain.

Derrick Morse - Strong when delivering his initial blow, the Hurricane product displayed dead feet during the day. Early indications as an in-the-box blocker, Morse needs to pump the feet to drive opponents off the ball.

Marvin Philip - Was not present during team activities.

Kevin Shaffer - The physical right tackle continues to display a deficiency in his overall technique. An obvious lack of a solid punch was apparent. He often leads with his helmet. Generally kept his hands too wide. And the final result is not always getting proper extension.

Isaac Sowells - Being bounced back and forth, the young veteran was once again at left tackle on this day. A reoccurring theme has quickly become the tackle’s inconsistency in his hand play. The lineman was over committing and leaning too far over his toes in anticipation of landing a solid punch. When the young man was able to land the elusive initial pop, he struggled reestablishing his hands on the defensive linemen.

Eric Steinbach - Generally regarded as one of the league’s best guards, it is odd seeing Steinbach being scolded by his coach for technique issues. This was the case as offensive line coach Steve Marshall was not impressed with Steinbach’s effort on keeping his hands inside on one particular occasion. As one of the lighter interior lineman around the NFL, Steinbach’s ability to control a defender by getting under their pads is crucial.

Joe Thomas - One area of note the past two days has been the left tackle’s hand play. While there still appeared to be an issue, he definitely showed a penchant for controlling defenders with his uncanny ability to reestablish his hands. His pass set could be used in instructional tapes with his athletic feet, perfect body lean, and ability to slide with defenders. link

ON THE LINE: IT CONTINUES
Trench warfare, Sobleski-style. In his continuing series, Brent breaks both sides of the Browns' lines, giving insight as to how these crucial units are coming together and prgressing.

Day 2 (Friday): The tone of practice was ratcheted down a few notches throughout the single session today. All participants were in full pads. With an unexpected absence of right guard, Rex Hadnot, the offensive line units were shuffled. As the practice wore on, it became obvious it was the defensive line’s day as they dominated in most areas.

Defensive line

Louis Leonard - Big and strong at the point of attack, the young nose tackle struggled fighting pressure, using his hands properly, and getting off blocks throughout the session.

Chase Pittman - The defensive end‘s straight ahead power is impressive from his newly-minted 300 pound frame. Where he looked to struggle today is in his lateral movement, which was sluggish at best. Overall, Pittman just did not appear explosive off the line of scrimmage today.

Melila Purcell - Currently listed at 295 pounds, Purcell is slightly undersized to play defensive end, especially when his pad level was as high as it was in today’s session.

Shaun Rogers - The new car smell has quickly worn off, and Rogers made himself the story of the day dominating in each drill. The explosion and quickness this man tipping the scales at 350 pounds displays at times is staggering. His first step off the step is at times mind boggling. On multiple occasions , the nose tackle was able to beat his blocker off the ball, clean to wreak havoc in the backfield. When he came off the ball low and hard, it consistently took two or three offensive lineman to contain the nose tackle. Certainly, the highlight of the day was when Rogers was able to intercept a tipped pass and rumble for 20 to 30 yards like he was a natural running back.

Ahytba Rubin - Again the rookie defensive lineman struggled some with his technique. As he wears down it appears his stance suffers and he displays a tendency to stand straight up, being merely content to clog up whatever holes he can.

Brian Schaefering - Each day he has approached practice with a blue collar attitude, but the hardworking potential defensive end again played a little high at times today. Though he came off the line hard, he looked to have trouble getting off blocks as well.

Robaire Smith - The veteran end continues to do his job each day without much fanfare. One area which could be seen as slightly lacking as the rust wears off going into a new season is Robaire’s reaction to hat reads. Sometimes if he could close down a running lane just a hair quicker, the back would not have any type of cutback.

Shaun Smith - Again started the day as the first nose tackle with the first unit. This quickly changed as Shaun Rogers stole the show. Throughout multiple practices, he has shown a nice burst off the line of scrimmage as well as being strong at the point of attack.

Corey Williams - Continues to show improvements picking up the scheme and as his movements became more natural. One area today which was a little lacking was the defensive end’s inability to consistently break down an offensive lineman’s hands.

Offensive Line

Nate Bennett - The tenacious guard has showed an early tendency to play over his toes, thus losing some of his balance when engaging in a block. He certainly seemed more comfortable as he was moved back to the interior at guard.

Hank Fraley - A tough day for the veteran as he bore the brunt of Shaun Rogers' excellent showing. One on one, the pivot could not contain the big nose tackle. He certainly fought hard and did all he could, which eventually proved futile.

Lennie Friedman - The team’s resident utility lineman took repetitions as the second unit’s center today. A strength of the interior lineman’s which quickly became apparent throughout the session was the quickness in which he shot his hands and established extension on usually larger opponents.

Rex Hadnot - The right guard did not practice during Friday’s session due to a slight ankle injury.

James Lee - Lee was presented with the opportunity to receive plenty of repetitions as the second team’s left tackle. The rookie slid well in his pass protection and generally looks athletic. At times, though, his technique broke down and the consistency on his initial kick step was lacking

Cliff Louis - The long and lanky tackle continued to struggle with his overall technique, and it reflected in his overall play.

Seth McKinney - Slotted in as the first unit’s right guard, last season’s starter really displayed nice technique, especially on getting extension and trying to drive off defenders.

Derrick Morse - Looked solid in the box, but struggled when asked to move in space and handling more talented defensive linemen.

Marvin Philip - Continued to be strong at the point of attack, coming off the ball with a nice pad level and getting good pop, but did not move particular well laterally or get extension.

Kevin Shaffer - The right tackle liked to wrestle his opponents as the day commenced. He lacked a strong initial punch, extension, and loved to get his hands all over the smaller defensive lineman or outside linebackers.

Isaac Sowells - A move back to the strong side awaited the former Hoosier during this day. One area in particular the tackle struggled throughout the session was timing his punches properly, which broke down everything past said point. Overall, Sowells appeared much more comfortable at right tackle than he did at left a day previously.

Eric Steinbach - Surprisingly, the athletic guard had a little trouble picking up stunts during one particular line drill today. He certainly shined when asked to move in space and making key blocks down the field for his running backs.

Joe Thomas - Hand play can still be improved. The left tackle does reestablish his hands very well but at times just gets a little wide. Also through the day, Thomas looked a little weak to his post leg with some pass rushers getting underneath the tackle on occasion. Mainly, these are merely nitpicks on a player through practices who has shown very good athleticism, solid technique, and the ability to dominate his assignment.
