Cleveland Browns' Braylon Edwards seeks to make his dreams a reality, Bill Livingston says Sunday, August 03, 2008 Bill Livingston Plain Dealer Columnist No man is an island, even in his fantasies. When Braylon Edwards dreams, he has company. "I see a big banner on a building downtown," the Browns' wide receiver said, channeling his inner LeBron James. James' huge "witness" banner hangs near The Q. "Only the banner is of our entire team," Edwards said. Edwards thinks reverie can become reality this season. "Why not? Basket ball is really behind the Indians in popularity, too. This is a football town. We're the Browns. The name on the door is Cleveland," said Edwards, reciting the team's advertising slogan. Edwards is changing the perception of the Browns. Once, the Browns were defined by Jim Brown, slowly clambering to his feet, or Leroy Kelly, bursting up the middle on the trap, or Gene Hickerson, pulling and blocking like a wrecking ball. Those were the days, and did they ever end. Last season, however, Jamal Lewis restored pride to the running game and much needed balance to the offense. Still, the Browns broke through as contenders in 2007 on the strength of a passing game as newly formed with quarterback Derek Anderson's ascension as it was record-breaking. No one is likely to break Jim Brown's team rushing records any time soon. Edwards, however, broke both the single-season reception yardage record (1,289), topping Webster Slaughter's 1,236 in 1989, and the mark for touchdowns (16), topping Gary Collins' 13, set in a season shorter by two games in 1963. Edwards thus became a member of a very exclusive club. The Browns have had only three record-holders in their history in TD passes for a season. Hall of Famer Dante Lavelli caught nine in a 14-game season in the All-American Football Conference in 1947. The '63 Browns also played 14 games. Lavelli and Collins were at their best in the clutch. Lavelli caught 11 passes, two for touchdowns, in the upstart Browns' 1950 championship win over the Rams. Collins caught three touchdown passes in the 1964 title win against Baltimore. Running backs judge themselves by yardage. Not so with wideouts. "It's touchdowns," Edwards said. "Touchdowns put seven points on the board [with the PAT]. Yardage will keep you in the game, but you might be kicking field goals. A 1,500-yard season without touchdowns wouldn't help the team win." A big target at 6-3, Edwards has matured, both in more precise route-running on the field and in conforming to team expectations off it. He said he would, however, attend the Ohio State-Michigan game all over again, were it ever to be for the same stakes as in 2006. He created a frenzy by returning late for a team meeting from Columbus by helicopter after the clash of unbeaten teams. "I'd just get back by a different route," he said. He still drops some easy ones, although not as many as at Michigan. "It's a function of having talent and knowing you can do something after the catch," he said. "Watch T.O. [Terrell Owens] on a 5-yard hitch. He's running before he has the ball at times, because he knows it could be a 90-yard touchdown." Football is a sport of big plays, not routine ones, like baseball. Edwards works diligently on looking the ball all the way into his hands. Because in his dreams, he always goes long. To reach Bill Livingston: blivingston@plaind.com, 216-999-4672

I hate this excuse. Dropping that five yard hitch can be five yards less a first down. While points on the board win, so does controlling field position and Time of Possession.
I can't complain that much because Edwards is very similar to TO skillset wise. They're both big, strong guys who run good routes and make good plays. Edwards is also willing to block which counts a lot in my book. But yeah, some of those stupid drops are soooo annoying. I'll definitely put up with them because he's so good, but I don't buy into the "drop it because I'm already looking up field" excuse.
This is why I wish we had Wes Welker on our team. That guy's the man. Mix him with Winslow and Edwards and we'd have the best WR tandem in the league. Welker catches the ball every time and throws great blocks. Good route runner and plays furiousously. Not as good as Edwards, but definitely a threat underneath who would be another great compliment. Also he's not another primadonna personallity for the team.................I guess I can dream though.

I buy into it entirely as a reason for the drops, but there is no excuse for it. It's great to think that every time you touch the ball you can go big for YAC yards, but as you said it's all about taking what the D gives you, and if its 5 yards then that is 5 yards you didn't previously have towards the ultimate goal of scoring.

Again with the TEAM talk.. is this the same BE we drafted,, he seems so much more mature and in tune with the TEAM spirit thing than at anytime.. even last year;.... I'm liking this kid more and more,, both on and off the field.
He's becoming a complete person,,

I'm guessing that Welker never dropped a pass? WOW,,, Anyway, you wouldn't trade Edwards for Welker straight up would you?
I think I can accept dropped passes from a player that puts up the kind of numbers that Edwards does.. I understand that it still doesn't feel good when you see a drop, but in the grand scheme of things,, it's overall production that counts and Edwards has it. But that is JMO...

And yeah, I'm sure Welker dropped a few passes this year (and I got to watch most Pats games), but he definitely caught the easy ones better than Edwards sometimes does. I love our guys (Winslow and Edwards), I just also love that little warrior that the Pats have. He is a very good player.
I just hope we can extend Winslow and Edwards' contracts soon so that we can guarentee they're on our team for awhile. I'm still not sure who I'd want more though because they both are so damn good

What happened to the other BE thread from yesterday?
The drops are something that I believe there is no excuse for. I've been delighted by the early training camp reports that said Edwards was catching everything thrown his way, good and bad. Then he drops an easy touchdown on Family Night. I'd gladly trade some of the spectacular ones for the easy ones. The easy ones are drive - and sometimes game - killers. Edwards was lucky last year that we were able to overcome some of them.

Yeah Petey, Of course I saw that,, I was just giving you a hard time... I know what your saying and I pretty much agree.
But like I said,, and Rish you probably don't want to hear this, but honestly, for the type of production we get from Edwards now that he's "reborn", I'll take the 12-14 drops he had last season... I hate them, but I'll live with them.

I hate seeing drops, but man, Edwards had a HUGE year, and some of his catches were without a doubt the greatest grabs I've ever seen personally. Just ridiculous. Look at my sig. The catch was unreal. Watching it in full speed, I thought he was out. There was no way in hell he caught it, controlled it, and had 2 feet in. No way, no how. But he did. I'm sure as hell happy Braylon is in Cleveland. Him and DA have been stretching the field in practice, going deep, and they're saying it's pretty much unstoppable.

I think he still has to address the drops. It can't be acceptable just because he makes big plays otherwise. I know you're not saying that, but I think people are starting to take the 'it's ok because he makes up for it' stance, and I think that's a slippery slope. Those same people won't be saying that when he drops the easy, most critical pass of a particular game of meaning. He's lucky that so far that hasn't happened yet. But with his drops problem, it's a real possibility.

Now that is some good stuff.
Braylon knows what the Browns mean to this city. And he's right. Lebron IS the Cavs. The Browns are a TEAM. And the Browns ARE Cleveland. He's been saying the right things and performing the right actions. I said it once and I'll say it again, lock this kid up for a LONG time. When all said and done, he'll be the best WR to put on a Browns uniform.
When he's at his best, you can't stop him.

Stop being such a negative nancy. Do you watch the games?
He's one of the main reasons we're in them period. As Daman said, and I said, I will accept those drops since he produces the way he does. Every reciever drops balls, and recievers who have more balls thrown their way, esp in double coverage, will drop the ball. Edwards misses some easy ones, but it isn't as bad as you're making it out to be. He catches the ball a lot better than most recievers in the NFL. If you don't think he constantly works on catching the ball, you're crazy. Also, his improvement at catching from two seasons ago to last season was definitely visible. The guy's one of the best in the NFL.
He's the best reciever we've had since we came back, and better than any of the guys that I remember watching: which basically dates back to the one and only Michael Jackson. But yeah, Edwards is very good. Don't take that away from him. He's always missed some easy balls. Every reciever does, it's just the ones who get the ball thrown to them the most will miss the most..... That's why it's looked that way throughout college, and that's why it looked that way this year. While he might miss more than other GREAT recievers, that isn't going to change. It's a weakness that he'll improve, but it will never be a strength I don't think.

Drops are never OK, don't mistake that with greatness.
With that being said, I get what Rish is saying. The time will come where BE will drop an easy pass that may continue a drive that may win a game.
The question is, do we lambaste him for that missed catch or the numerous others that he makes that keep us in games? Becuase the fact of the matter is that BE makes ridiculous catches that no one should make along with the drops that no NFL Receiver should make.
Where do you draw the line?

I've actually never seen a Browns game.
Look, I didn't take the time in that one post to also highlight Edwards many positives. I agree with you that he's the best I've ever seen in a Browns uni, and I grew up with Slaughter, Brennan, and Langhorne. The guy is one of the tops in the league, no doubt.
He still has the dropsies. It's a fact. If it doesn't make you a little uncomfortable, I'm happy for you. It makes me a little uncomfortable because I'm afraid it's going to happen when we least need it to. Having said that, I am very glad he is a Brown.

There also may be games where you know he goes for 8 catches 146 yards and 2 tds one of which is a diving touchdown and we win by 6... OH WAIT the Cinci game.
Braylon may drop a pass on a drive that may impact the game, but what if that drive was earlier in the game? People make too big of a deal on the last drive just because it is the last drive.
Braylon could go off for 200 yards one game and drop a pass on the last drive and people would flame him, but in reality he was probably better than anyone else on the field that day he just dropped a pass, it happens.

Earnest Byner anyone?
It's damn near the same thing. We wouldn't have been in that game if not for Byner, and then he fumbles on the goal line. What should he be remembered for?

It doesn't 'just happen' when you lead the league in drops. At that point, it's a problem that needs to be corrected.

It is a problem but no ones perfect...
My whole point is people magnify stuff towards the end of a game way more than they should... I would say the 1300 yards and 16 tds outweighs the amount of drops he had by a long shot.

And what if Derek Anderson didn't throw alot of interceptions and what if our defensive line didnt completely suck last year and what if Phil Dawson's field goal hadn't been blocked...
Drops are part of the game, "if" Braylon didn't drop 13 passes or whatever it was, he could have had maybe 100 more yards im guessing because he always seems to drop the short ones. Also, people are saying they are afraid of Braylon dropping a big pass, which I can only remember him doing once in the NFL (Against the Saints week one) He pretty much almost won us the Cardinals game and went off completely against the Bengals and burned DB's weekly.
Yes, drops suck, yes I'm sure Braylon works on trying to fix it, but come on lets not gripe about one of our best players, learn to be a little positive around here.

Ask the 31 other teams in the league if they would take Braylon over their #1 receiver and I guarantee you at least 80% of them would say yes.

I'm not quite sure what we are arguing about. Do you or don't you wish Braylon would cut down on the drops? That's really the question. If you don't, that's cool. I do. And I think he's a helluva player. I think most teams would love to have him. But I sure wish he'd bring in some of those easy ones that he drops. Do I wish he was on another team? No way.
I just don't see what's wrong with wanting a guy - Pro Bowler or not - to improve on a part of his game.
Guess I'm just being a negative nancy.

I feel like Browns fans under appreciate some of their players some times and most of all Braylon, the guy adds a huge element to our passing attack, drops or not, hes an amazing player.

I understand what you're saying, that he might drop one in a crucial situation.
I just don't like the way you act like a drop by him suddenly loses us the game. Considering that he's generally the one winning us the game in the first place, whatever. And sure, he might have the most drops in the NFL, but he has more passes thrown to him than most players anyway. So yeah, I don't believe that he "drops easy passes more than any other player in the NFL". (and I'm probably not refering to you, but other posters there)
Let James Thrash of the Redskins have that many balls thrown his way. Then see how many easy ones he drops......
And don't take the Negative Nancy thing to heart. You have said that you appreciate Braylon for all he does. For me, this is why we need a good possession reciever. We basically have that in Winslow and had that in JJ.

Your argument that he gets thrown to more than everyone else is not a good one.
BE was 21st in the league in receptions - with 80 - last season, yet 1st in drops.
There is going to be quite a different reaction for everyone sticking up for BE if he makes that critical drop in a critical game. It would be one thing to do it at a critical point when you don't have the reputation of dropping passes. It's another thing when that reputation precedes you. Hopefully, it doesn't happen.
I never hold my breath when the ball gets thrown to K2 or JJ. I always find myself holding my breath when it gets thrown to BE.

But you don't know how many balls were thrown to him. Sometimes a reciever doesn't catch a ball and doesn't drop it. Wouldn't this scew that stat?
He averaged 16 yards per catch, might that not scew that stat as well because he is going further on routes? Look at all the other players before him, only TO puts up a higher number.
May be the fact that his QB bullets balls at him might scew that stat too.
While I'm just pulling these stats up to refute yours, I am just saying that the reception stat isn't an end all be all how many balls are thrown your way. And I did notice that Winslow had recpetions............
I think you're killing him on these drops. That's all. Winslow definitely catches the ball better, but I don't think he's as bad as that "dropped ball" number makes it out to be. May be they should have a number that also says, "caught uncatchable ball".

How many times a guy gets thrown to has nothing to do with drops. It is not counted as a drop if it is uncatchable.

I never hold my breath when the ball gets thrown to K2 or JJ. I always find myself holding my breath when it gets thrown to BE.
Funny... KW2 dropped 8 last season and even mighty Joe dropped 5. Maybe you should hold your breath when ANY Browns receiver is targeted.
The only reason I mentioned this is because any receiver that gets targeted even somewhat frequently is going to drop some balls he should have caught. Not a good thing, but it is what it is. Good receivers always work on getting better at it and I'm sure ours are no exception.
To me, its a much bigger deal to have an offensive player that ranked second only to Randy Moss in TDs last season than it is to point out that same player's flaws. FWIW, Moss dropped 10 last season. Doo doo occurs. Even with the best.

Why is everyone so fascinated with how many times a guy gets thrown to? That has nothing to do with it. The stats are only tabbed against 'catchable balls'. If a guy gets thrown to 1000 times and only 10 are catchable, and he catches 8 of them...he's got 8 catches and 2 drops. What exactly does the 1000 have to do with it?
Moss caught 98 balls last year, dropped 8...for a total of 106 catchable balls. He dropped 7.5% of the passes thrown to him. BE had 80 catches, 12 drops. He dropped 13% of the catchable passes thrown his way ... that's nearly twice the percentage as Moss. If you went back through the game tape, I would wonder how significant each individual drop was for each player. I can't think of a single BE drop that affected the outcome of a game, but I know some of them had the potential to be first downs or big gainers. I think it's just a matter of time before one of them affects the outcome of a game ... unless he gets better at it.
I'm a huge BE fan, but I think he really needs to improve in this area.

Wasn't he tied with Dallas Clark for 1st place in drops? Who had 58 rec in 15 games.

We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

May be because you're not factoring the amount of uncatchable balls that Braylon brought in last year as well Rishuz........... I really don't care what your stats are, nor do I care what this dropped ball stat is. I watched the games, he catches the ball better than most of our WRs on the team.
He often makes catches in double coverage which other recievers won't make. He often makes crazy catches which other players can't make as well.
It's understood that Braylon drops balls, but he DOES have the ball thrown to him more than any other reciever on the team. and in your top 20 list of receptions or whatever, the only guy who was averaging more per catch than Braylon was TO, another guy who "drops the ball". Looking at that may be Braylon drops a few more because he goes out for longer routes. I'm just saying, stop throwing these stupid stats at us. You think he drops the ball all the time, a lot of us don't think so. That's all.

I am actually in the camp that stats do not tell the entire story ... ever. However, drops may be close to the exception to the rule. It was never my intention to use stats to prove my point, but everyone keeps coming back with the argument that 'he gets more thrown to him than most'. To me, that's irrelevant. It's the percentage (and the total number) of drops of catchable balls. I noticed now that I brought up those stats that your new argument is 'he gets more thrown to him than anyone else on the team'. Nice. It's still irrelevant.
Maybe most of his catches have a higher degree of difficulty than everyone else, as you allude to. I would find that hard to believe when stacked up against the top receivers in the league. Then degree of difficulty would also be a subjective measure as well.
Guess we just disagree.

That still doesn't have anything to do with the drops.
