Ok,, I'll buy that entire comment from you.. makes sense to me..

Question, in your post that I originally responded to, you mentioned something about Cribbs talking aboiut a baseball career.... where did that come from.. I guess I totally missed that?

A little bit ago I posted a pod cast on espn with Cribbs. In it he states that he is planning on trying to play baseball next offseason. the thread should still be around somewhere.

I would bet the desire to rework the deal is more player generated...at the least, equal.

Seeing as he just signed last year....sorry Josh....you are about 8th on the list.

I wonder what he would bring in the way of a pick??

Yes & NO. I'm old style, meaning you agreed to it, you signed it you honor it.

ME TOO !!!

Then there is the cut or cut to save money part. I understand why teams do it, after all player salaries count against the cap, and if the player isn't up to snuff then what choice does the team have but to cut the players salary.

Lets talk about the Browns going back to Willie and Andre and basicly telling them either except a pay cut or get cut, your choice. Thats the Browns doing exactly the same thing only in reverse. The players have only one resource to get an increase in pay, (hold out) yet the teams hold all the cards when it comes to cutting salaries. I believe that you shouldn't sign a player unless your willing to complete the deal, good, bad, or ugly, but that knife needs to cut both ways, and thats really not fair to the player. I completely understand why in some instances players do hold out. I completely understand the fans hate it because it can place a teams ability to be competative at risk.

But try taking a look at the entire picture, I understand the players POV, I understand the teams POV, and I really understand the fans POV. These types of things really suck for everyone. And the truly sad part is we are likely to see quite a bit of it over the course of the next few seasons. Get used to it, and try to hold everyone to the same standard...

BTW Thanks Daman that was truly kind...

Yeah, I totally missed that one.. Totally..

Now that just ticks me off.

Cribbs was ignored throughout the entire draft,, I remember the Skins had an interest in him as a UDFA but we got him instead.

So he got his chance, got some money, proved his worth, got more money and now he's saying he may play baseball? Wow,, does he think he's Bo or Deion...

Question, was he serious or tongue in cheek when he talked about baseball..

I'll say this, if he thinks he can play baseball and keep his current level of play in the NFL, more power to him!

The kid is a tremendous athlete. I remember watching him while I was at Kent. He was just jaw-dropping to watch.

In HS, I believe he lettered in baseball, basketball, football and swimming.

See, this is the point that I do not understand. First, he is not taking money out of the fans pocket. Yes, the cost of his contract, others and the expenses of running/having a team will get filtered down to the fans, but fans make the choice to go to the games, deal with it. Second, Cribbs shelf life as a special teamer is short. I can understand him asking for more money, and I can understand the Browns saying nope! Josh is not holding out, or anything like that so big deal. And BTW - if you do not ask for a raise, you dag gone sure will not get it!! ( but he screwed himself by taking the long term contract!)

I'll never question his athleticism.

I will question his motivation for trying to do both. Other athletes of note tried the two sport thing and it really never worked out for them either.

Deion and Bo to name two. Deion tried it for a few seasons and it was a circus.. Bo played Baseball with KC and Football with the Raiders. How long was his career again?

Both were very very good at both sports but it takes it's toll on a body..

Cribbs may be all you say he is.. But he's never gonna get the big bucks that Bo or Deion got for his baseball time.. He doesn't have the draw that either of them had..

a Tony Grossi article from today:

Quote:

Cleveland Browns specialist Josh Cribbs is out of line
by Tony Grossi Plain Dealer Reporter Tuesday August 05, 2008, 1:00 PM
Before his Pro Bowl season, Josh Cribbs signed a new six-year contract with the Browns. Then he changed agents. Now he wants a new contract. Or his new agent, Peter Schaffer, wants a new contract so that he can extract his agent fee from Cribbs.

The catalyst behind it is a new four-year deal recently signed by Devin Hester that reportedly guarantees the Chicago Bears return specialist $15 million and could net him a maximum of $40 million.

Just a week ago, Cribbs told The Plain Dealer columnist Bud Shaw that he was happy for Hester because the new standard for Pro Bowl specialists eventually would trickle down to him.

"Oh yes, they're going to take care of me here. I know that. They've showed good faith. I'm not worried about it. I got somebody to deal with that so all I have to do is go out and play."

Now Schaffer is asking the Browns for a new deal. What gall.

Actually, I believe that Cribbs is a better all-around football player than Hester. In fact, I ranked him No. 1 on the Browns team at the end of last season based on performance and impact.

But Cribbs has to wait his turn for a new deal. Now is not the time for his agent to be rattling his Blackberry from his office in Denver.

Look what two of Cribbs' teammates did this year. Andra Davis and Willie McGinest agreed to significant paycuts to return. Both did so to help push the team over the top.

Davis has invested his whole NFL career with the Browns and wanted to be here when the team finally wins. McGinest returned because of his loyalty to coach Romeo Crennel, who needs the 15-year veteran to help manage the locker room during a season of great expectations. McGinest is one of the few players on the team who's been through the rigors of a schedule loaded with prime-time appearances.

As success finally comes the Browns' way, their playmakers have their hands extended, seeking more cash. Cribbs has to fall in line.

Ahead of him are safety Sean Jones, whose contract is up after this year; receiver Braylon Edwards, whose deal expires after 2009; and tight end Kellen Winslow, who has three years to go.

Cribbs should tell his agent to back off. Fans in Cleveland shelling out $4 a gallon for gas aren't going to be very sympathetic to his contract demands.

You all know I don't care for Grossi much,, but he makes some valid points this time...

This is what gets EO off....Tony....if Cribbs was content with his last deal, he wouldn't have hired a new agent. He didn't hire a new agent to manage his Christmas Card list.....he hired the guy and told him he needed a better contract.

Damon,
What points do you see in this article?? I mean other than the part about him being happy last year with the contract. First, new agent means that the new agent does not get any money from the existing contract. So of course, the new agent comes in and starts talking about new contract!! Second, Davis and McGinest are not a factor in this because they took pay cuts because they did not produce much. If there numbers were higher, they would not have taken the pay cut or they would have tested the market.

Other than the point about the other contracts that need to get done before his, what is the point in this article??.. Grossi is a hack!!

And as I said. Cribbs wouldn't have terminated his relationship with his old agent if he didn't want something new....of course the new agent is talking about a contract, that is what he was hired to talk about.

And we don't know what the new agent might be getting...it just depends what services he or she might be providing Cribbs Inc.

The desire for a new deal is all on Josh. No pushing it off on to his hired representative.

If you want to blame somebody, blame Josh. Nobody forced him to sign his deal. For all you know, his last agent may have told him to not sign the deal, but he wanted the immediate cash. A year later, Josh then wants the agent to get a better deal.

Shoot....maybe the agent was the one to terminate the relationship....it works that way too you know.

DogNDC.. I see the part about Cribbs having to wait in line for Braylon, KW's and Jones contracts to be done first.. Those I think (JMO) are priorties. Actually, the order should be:

Jones - Last year of his contract
Braylon - Next year will be his last
KW2 - Got three more years on his

Those are Grossis points that I agree with

You have minimal 'earning years' in the NFL, probably even less so for Cribbs as the shelf life of the average return man isnt high, on top of his coverage duties.

I totally understand him asking for a raise, by the time his current contract is over his skills might be diminished so he wants to capitalize on his talents while he can.

He's not holding out, he has worked hard since day 1. Not everyone asking for more money are 'bad guys' .. but you make what you can, when you can. These guys wont have another chance to make this kind of money.

If they could add a bunch of incentives onto his contract I think it would be great, maybe even one or two in case he develops into a viable receiver.

I knew this would happen as soon as Hester got his deal. Things are going to start clusterfudging with more winning.

Only if we make poor decisions.

At this point, Cribbs isn't a priority. We have more important parts to lock up. Then at some point after we get players like Jones and edwards locked up for 4-5 more years, and have some extra cash laying around, we look at the kick returner.

One also has to think after this year, or next for sure, we will have to visit with the agent of the qb we keep. It usually isn't in your best interest to wait until the end on that.

If Anderson has a monster year this year, we might start talking to him even though he just signed a 3 year deal.

I don't know who else is getting near the end of their contract cycle, but I could name 10-15 guys I would rather see locked up long term and happy before I had any further contract talks with Cribbs.

If he holds out, he holds out.

To piggy back off the Cribbs discussion a little bit, I think the Jones thing is 50/50 to go either way. I've never gotten the impression from the team that they are all that enamored with him. I think they believe he does an adequate job, but I think we will want to pay him adequate money, not big money. He's not a game changer. It may depend on what other options are out there.

No beef with that comment. You can substitute any names you like.

Steinbach,Fraley,Smith,Wimbly,Winslow,Edwards..DA or Quinn....you get the point.

Cribbs isn't near the top unless he finds something else in his game.

I myself would forget about him as a receiver and start working him as a safety...I think he could be pretty darn good. I think he could impact games from that position.

Soon as I saw the Hester deal, I started looking for news about Cribbs wanting a new contract... Didn't take long. I don't blame Cribbs, just wondering what the hell he and his agent are thinking, having just signed a contract. He obviously got the new agent so he could get a new contract, but they have to know it's not going to be coming any time soon. Cribbs speaks on the homepage, and he has the right idea: play football, let the agent and the FO work out the money. I respect that. But the first day he holds out because his agent can't get a deal done, I'm gonna be pissed.

It's a terrible contract. They should up that to 2-2.3mil/yr or so. He is way underpaid for what he brings to this team. It's hard to believe Kevin Schaffer makes 6x what Cribbs makes. I can't see being able to replace his impact with 1 or even two players, and certainly not for less than 2.5 mil/yr.

And for me its RB...at least we've seen him take a hand off or two. I think its too late for him to switch to Defense, its not an easy task.

He just redid his contract last year and now he wants a new one? What the hell was the point in signing last year then? I can understand a player looking for a new contract a year or two from his contract expiring, but with 5 years remaining on a 6 year contract??!!?! No way. Honor your word, accept your pay and move on. Keep producing and get paid on your next one that you can get in 3 years. No way do I work on a new deal.

All star or not, honor your word.

Agent: Cribbs just wants fair compensation
By Carlos "Big C" Holmes

Staff Writer

Thursday, August 07, 2008

Recent reports of Cleveland Browns return specialist/wide receiver Joshua Cribbs' request for a new contract have been a hot topic in Browns training camp lately. In 2007 Cribbs signed a six-year deal worth just under $6 million, including a $2 million signing bonus.

According to Cribbs' agent, JR Rickert, there have been conflicting reports in the media. He insisted that many of these reports are not clear and are inaccurate.

During a phone conversation with the agent on Wednesday, Rickert wanted to set the record straight on talks of a new contract for his client and provided a clear timeline of what occurred.

"I met with Joshua in Cleveland in August of 2007 after he fired Andre Cologna and signed with me shortly thereafter," Rickert said. "At that time, Joshua indicated a concern about the contract he signed when he was with Cologna. He also indicated that his plan to address it was to perform on the field. All Joshua did was have a Pro Bowl season in 2007. He has never once complained to the team or the media."

I was told that Rickert and his partner, Peter Schaffer, communicated with the Browns on a regular basis during the 2007 season. Schaffer is the lead agent for left tackle Joe Thomas and starting cornerback Eric Wright, while Rickert is the lead agent for Cribbs and cornerback Brandon McDonald.

So there are reasons to believe that there were some discussions between representatives for Cribbs and the Browns organization before now.

"This notion that Joshua all of a sudden became dissatisfied with his contract after the Pro Bowl and hired us to fix it is absolutely inaccurate," Rickert said. "Joshua has expressed a concern all along about feeling 'protected.' As his agent, I would not be doing my job if I did not explore ways to better protect and secure him."

What the agent means by protect is making sure that his client is being compensated for what the player's market value is truly worth.

If you look inside the numbers, Cribbs' current non-guaranteed compensation package valued at approximately $987,000 per year doesn't come close to Chicago Bears return specialist Devin Hester's new deal of $5 million per year, with $15 million guaranteed. It also does not come close to the $4 million per year and guarantees of over $10 million that the Houston Texans shelled out to former Browns wide receiver Andre Davis.

If you look at the situation from a player–agent standpoint Cribbs is grossly underpaid.

You can also look at it like this. Cribbs is no longer just a return specialist and special-teams player. He's assuming a new role this season as the team's No. 2 receiver. Now one could make the argument that maybe the Browns should look into the contract situation based on his expanded role on offense. The Green Bay Packers rewarded running back Ryan Grant with a new deal this offseason when he earned the role of featured back.

This doesn't appear to be a case of a player looking to cash in on the success of a stellar season as we so often hear and read about. This matter seems solely based on productivity and market value. It's like he's getting a promotion without compensation.

Rickert said that Cribbs approach to the situation has never changed and he wants to take care of the matter on the field, and has empowered representatives to do the best they can to communicate with the team.

There is absolutely no talk of Cribbs holding out in a horrid attempt to force the organization into renegotiating his contract. He has stated publicly that he will bring his A-game on Sundays, deal or no deal.

However, there will come a time when the organization must resolve this issue of deficient compensation for Cribbs, sooner or later.

As long as he doesn't hold out or become a distraction, I think he's more than right in pursuing whatever he can get. If he isn't in line asking for his share they won't consider handing him more out of the goodness of their hearts. If you don't ask you don't get.

Cribbs has more than likely made more money so far than he ever expected. He has to keep after the business end of it or he'll be broken down and not able to make more in just a few years. His biggest mistake was signing that long-term deal and it is going to haunt him.
