dropped Steelers' Batch breaks collarbone in preseason opener vs. Eagles By James Walker ESPN.com (Archive) Updated: August 8, 2008, 9:35 PM ET Comment Email Print PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers had their first major injury of the 2008 season Friday night as backup quarterback Charlie Batch suffered a fractured right collarbone during their preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Batch was hurt while scrambling with just under six minutes to go in the second quarter. Typically, this type of injury can take somewhere between 4-8 weeks to recover. This could be a significant blow to Pittsburgh's depth. Ben Roethlisberger is set as the starter, but the team is one play away from having to go with rookie quarterback Dennis Dixon, a fifth-round pick from Oregon. Batch has been a reliable backup in the NFL for 11 years, including the past four years in Pittsburgh. Now the Steelers likely will be in the market for another veteran signal caller to backup Roethlisberger.

I remember they were high on St. Pierre though too.
I think they're effed if Roethlisberger goes down.

I would never wish injury on anyone... but maybe Wimbley can give big Ben a MAJOR head ache

Sorry, but Leftwich is just awful.
I don't know Ammo, he's clearly not as good as he was once thought to be, but to step in for a couple of plays,, maybe a game or two... it might work out for them and him.
All in all, anything that messes with the status quo in Pittsburgh is fine with me..
Having said that, I still don't like to see players injured.. my best to Charlie Batch.

Yeah, I don't think that's really wishing an injury. Just make him not want to come back in the game.

http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/10925591/rssSteelers consider Leftwich, Culpepper after Batch is injured Aug. 9, 2008 By Pete Prisco CBSSports.com Senior Writer Tell Pete your opinion! The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking at Byron Leftwich and Daunte Culpepper as possible replacements for backup quarterback Charlie Batch, who suffered a broken collarbone Friday night in a preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The two former starters have been without a team, searching for a place to land for the past six months. The injury to Batch has given them a chance, although not to compete as a starter, which is what they both wanted. Batch is said to be out for 6-8 weeks, but his absence could be longer. The Steelers' backups to Ben Roethlisberger are rookie Dennis Dixon and free agent Mike Potts. Leftwich, who was released by the Atlanta Falcons in the offseason, was a starter for the Jacksonville Jaguars at this time last year. But after a personality clash with coach Jack Del Rio, the team decided to release Leftwich nine days before the season. Several members of the coaching staff were stunned. Leftwich signed with the Falcons, but suffered an ankle injury that limited him to two starts. He was let go in March by the new regime because his cap figure was too high. He worked out for the Tennessee Titans last week -- some Titans observers said it was an impressive session -- but that was more as a possible emergency replacement. It's somewhat surprising that a team hasn't signed Leftwich, who was 24-20 as a starter in Jacksonville. There is some talk that he's a bad locker-room presence, which simply isn't true, according to several Jaguars player sources. "That's just stuff somebody from the team is putting out there," one player said. Leftwich has had a fair share of injuries, which could be scaring off some teams. Culpepper made seven starts for the Oakland Raiders last season before a hamstring injury sidelined him. He was a free agent this spring and reportedly turned down a $1 million offer from the Green Bay Packers. Culpepper is just four years removed from his impressive 2004 season when he threw 39 touchdown passes for the Minnesota Vikings. He tore up his knee the next season and thrown only 13 touchdown passes the past three years. Culpepper is 31 years old, while Leftwich is 28. Both players have said they are healthy and ready to go.

Interesting - surprised both signed to compete for the back-up... didn't culpepper turn down the Packers earlier in the summer... not sure which one of those two I'd want.

with Flaco or whatever his name is I'm not... I would suspect they expect him to be able to step in either late this season or next year... I don't care either way

http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d809ea7d8&template=with-video&confirm=true With Batch out, Steelers sign Leftwich to one-year deal Associated Press LATROBE, Pa. -- The Pittsburgh Steelers signed veteran quarterback Byron Leftwich to a one-year deal on Sunday, choosing the former Jacksonville Jaguars starter over Daunte Culpepper, a three-time Pro Bowl player. The Steelers signed the 28-year-old Leftwich after both he and Culpepper worked out Sunday morning at the team's training camp at Saint Vincent College. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Steelers were in the market for a backup to Ben Roethlisberger after veteran Charlie Batch broke his right collarbone in Friday night's 16-10 preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles at Heinz Field. Batch, who is to have surgery Monday, is expected to miss four to six weeks. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said Leftwich, who has started 46 career games for Jacksonville and Atlanta, may not be released when Batch returns. "We're just going to let the play talk," Tomlin said. "You know how we do it. We're going to evaluate what we see based on performance." Leftwich was released by Atlanta in February and has played in just nine games in the past two seasons because of ankle injuries. A first-round pick by Jacksonville in 2003, he saw action in 15 games that season, making 13 starts. He missed two games in 2004 and five in 2005 with injuries. A serious ankle injury in 2006 limited him to just six games, opening the door for backup David Garrard to get a 10-game audition and win the starting job. Leftwich was released at the end of training camp last year and signed with Atlanta. The Steelers also signed veteran punter Mitch Berger to a one-year deal on Sunday to compete with Paul Ernster. Daniel Sepulveda, a fourth-round draft pick in 2007, tore an anterior cruciate ligament and is out for the year. The 35-year-old Berger is a 12-year veteran with a career average of 43.1 yards on five different teams, including Arizona in 2007. The Steelers also activated Pro Bowl nose tackle Casey Hampton from the physically-unable-to-perform-list, where he had been since failing his conditioning test July 27. To make room for Leftwich and Berger on the roster, the team waived wide receiver Gerran Walker and linebacker Anthony Trucks. Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press

Man, talk about a rollercoaster career. Culpepper had a few good years up in Minnesota, then the bottom fell out and he looks to be finished. Especially if Leftwich beat him out for a roster spot. Wow.

I can only imagine how that conversation went.
Culpepper: "So, Coach, when do I get reps with the first unit?"
Tomlin: "What do you mean? Ben's our QB."
Culpepper: "You mean, I don't get to compete for the starting job?"
Tomlin: "lol wut?"
Culpepper: "I mean, I did throw for 40 TD's and 4000 yards a few years back."
Tomlin: "And that means what to me? I mean, you can't even find a job anywhere anymore and Ben made the Pro Bowl last year."
Culpepper: "Aww damn...I'll just e-mail the rest of the league then."

If they want to have someone like Byron able to fill in, they better hope that their line can pass block longer.
I mean, Ben's a hard guy to take down, and he got sacked something like 47 times last year. With Byron's time of release, that could spell trouble.

just clicking...
Just to make sure I have things right, the Steelers have to either keep Batch on the active roster despite his injury, put him on IR, or cut him, right? No PUP list since he was on the active roster during training camp?
