White Americans no longer a majority by 2042 By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER, Associated Press Writer Thu Aug 14, 5:03 AM ET WASHINGTON - White people will no longer make up a majority of Americans by 2042, according to new government projections. That's eight years sooner than previous estimates, made in 2004. The nation has been growing more diverse for decades, but the process has sped up through immigration and higher birth rates among minority residents, especially Hispanics. It is also growing older. "The white population is older and very much centered around the aging baby boomers who are well past their high fertility years," said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank. "The future of America is epitomized by the young people today. They are basically the melting pot we are going to see in the future." The Census Bureau Thursday released population projections through 2050, based on rates for births, deaths and immigration. They are subject to big revisions, depending on immigration policy, cultural changes and natural or manmade disasters. The U.S. has nearly 305 million people today. The population is projected to hit 400 million in 2039 and 439 million in 2050. That's like adding all the people from France and Britain, said Steve A. Camarota, director of research at the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington group that advocates tighter immigration policies. White non-Hispanics make up about two-thirds of the population, but only 55 percent of those younger than 5. By 2050, whites will make up 46 percent of the population and blacks will make up 15 percent, a relatively small increase from today. Hispanics, who make up about 15 percent of the population today, will account for 30 percent in 2050, according to the new projections. Asians, which make up about 5 percent of the population, are projected to increase to 9 percent by 2050. I'm feeling ya. just YESTERDAY I walked by this beautiful tan skinned dark haired beauty. it got me thinking of basically how long it would be before cross breading and other births made whites the minority. some of those darker skinned half mex/blk/asian and half white girls will be nice to see more of. of course I'm half mex n half white so maybe thats why i like them girls so much. but the more i think about it, i'd hate to be without those pale skinned redheads, mmmmm

So, the only way we aren't the majority any more is if you lump blacks, Asians, Mexicans, eastern europeans, et.al. together right? So the majority then becomes whom? Non-whites of all sorts? Is that even a classification on the form?

OK, enlighten me.
How is reporting this prediction going to make things any better? Seriously, all it does is keep reverberating white, black, hispanic, latino, mexican, asian, so on and so on. This article serves no purpose other than to bring up race. If you can't see that than you are very blind.

Well, when you look at it with cynical eyes, I can understand you would feel that way. Some people just might find predictions as to the make up of the country in the future to be quite interesting. It's not about making anything "better", and it doesn't have to be to be interesting to some. Others feel the need to automatically think the worst in any subject, you may very well be one of those unfortunate people. Not interested? Don't read it.

Your right. But in this instance it doesn't apply to what you said. This article wasn't about demographics for the case of marketing and advertising. It was simply bringing up a prediction that serves no value. I don't find it important to predict where the white population is going to stand in terms of percentage of other races. Now if this article or study touched on where they predict where most white people will live and buy, black people the same, hispanics the same, and on and on it would make sense to me. People investing in property for the future might want to know this information. Those people might want to know how to make the most money off of their investments. But in the case of what is written in this article I don't think that was the primary goal.

What is more pathetic is that the first response you have to my initial comment was attacking me as a person. I didn't attack you or anyone else. I said my piece on the article and you went where you did with your comments. You assumed I look for things bad in anything, and than tell me how thats pathetic. Oh yeah than you put the little roll eyes after that.
Instead of critisizing me why don't you try and argue my point with some information. We're both adults, can't that be done. Maybe you'll change my opinion on this topic with that approach.

Thats what I wrote. I didn't mean the article's purpose was to promote prejudice, but thats the biproduct of the article. Just like you said above about some people will find the negative in anything; some people will read this and use it to promote their prejudice beliefs. Just like those same people would use a country video to stereotype white people or rap video to stereotype black people. I just don't think anything good can come from an article like this unless it had an obvious objective. For instance as I mentioned above about predicting where different racial groups may live and buy in the future. That is stuff that can be used in buying and selling of property and products. An article on the prediction of groups by age, groups by gender, groups by religion, groups by occupation would be very informative. Because there is a correlation between those listed groups and what they use as social programs, buying power, and investment power. There is no significant correlation between race and any of those things. These are the reasons why I think this article was not good. Maybe I should have been much more thorough in this from the get go.

See when I read the article, I took it as stating that the US is becoming even more diverse, and by 2040 the Caucasian population will be below 50% for the first time in the countries history. Which may sound to promote racist views, but what it really signifies is that how each generation becomes a little more accepting of other races as they grow up with daily interaction with children of other races. But then, I tend to be an optimist and see the good in people and things.  It makes the world more tolerable.

Not every article is intended to "make things better"... some of them are just for your information and discussion.
But based on your other posts, if they bring up race in a way that people can profit from the differences between the races, then that is ok... of course that would be acknowledging that there actually ARE differences between the races.. so in my mind, this article is far less "racial" than the one you said would serve a purpose...

I thought it was a legitimate question.
Are they assuming the same 1 million illegals entering the country as part of their stats, or are they only figuring legal immigrants and births?
A very legitimate question concerning the validity of the data.
