I hardly find Hurricane damage to the oil rigs an "excuse". That seems to me to be a legitimate cause / effect scenario.

pretty low winds, and it's been a cool year (at least up here)... I wouldn't think it would strengthen all that much.

it's been hot and humid down here. This is a weird year as far as weather goes for us. The winds shifted earlier than usual (normally around the end of April, this year around the end of March). And we've been unusually dry. The water temp right now at our beach is 78*.
It ~could~ strengthen, but it would need to not pass over the mountains in Cuba, which right now it looks like it will.
The worst part for me is having to field all the calls from concerned guests cause of the sensationalism that is going on at the news stations. There is a difference between warning and panic. They toe that line a bit too close for me.

I'm not worried Keys. Unless the roof blows off the place and the rum stores get washed away, I'll be there  They've already started the hype on the local news here trying to throw everybody into a buying frenzy. Guess I'll hafta go get bateries before they are all gone (good thing wallyworld is right next door) and a gallon of rum tomorrow on the way to the..... Beach...

Being on the west coast, just south of Tampa, we are watching it. It's going to be a weak storm either way, so not a big deal, but still need to take precautions, pick up small articles around the yard, and so forth.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

I have a home in Venice. Some of my family moved out some time back.....moved there for a couple of years after Katrina...but only live 5 miles away and still have a key...they will go over and close up the hurricane shutters and check up on my MIL who lives a block over.

Yeah, I know, I was in Rocky Mtn. Nat'l Park Friday when it was snowing. The weather here has been totally ridiculous.  It has been raining here since friday morning.

FloridaFan- Had to go out and get the usual bottled water, battery powered lanterns, canned meats and other spreadable foods.
Wife made me go back out and get her hurricane supply of "Crown Royal" to ride out the storm.

No kidding! When the hubs and I were there 4 years ago for our honeymoon, it snowed in the mountains...and it was AUGUST!!! Closed up some roads, but we got up into Rocky Mtn Nat'l the next day.

I'm in Delray Beach and watching it closely. I'm on the east coast of Florida but you never know with these things. You wouldn't believe the mess it causes in my business.....Swimming Pool Service. The pools get absolutely trashed!!!!

Woohoo, another storm's coming to down.  It won't be bad, we're getting the worst predicted rainfall in the Central Florida this next week, about 4 inches. I'm not dreading it at all, but it should still be exciting.
I want the Cleveland Browns to be my pallbearers so they can let me down for the last time.

Just to update ya. They've issued mandatory evacuations for the keys for non-residents. It's starting to rain, and we've got a few gusts that are fair. Nothing more than a summer shower at this point.
We are expecting to let everyone back into the Keys by Tuesday PM. Back to business as usual then. Shuttering up the houses now, and getting everyone to hotels on the mainland for the next 2 days. Lots of folks just rescheduling. Unfortunately, I'm losing about 7 villas from guests that are from Europe. Italy, Sweden, UK, and Spain are all leaving and not coming back this year. They will return next year though.
I'll see ya later this week Beach, the rum will be in stock. =)
And yes, my beagles go nuts right before the storms, calm as can be during and after, but nutty before the storms. heh

Looking to come ashore somewhere around us sometime Tuesday morning.
I shuttered the back and sides of the house today, will shutter the front tomorrow after work, ran the generator a few minutes today to ensure it was operating fine.
Think we are good to go.

In California all we get is a ... "You'll have an earthquake. It'll be something over 6.7, hitting somewhere in the state, and should be happening in the next 30 years or so ... but there's a small chance we could be wrong too."

Great....my NASCAR Bristol weekend  .... In 1995 it rained all day from a hurricane remnant, but somehow someway a little window opened after an 1-1/2 delay and stayed open until the checkered drop and then it didn't stop. It did turn out to be one for ages though as Dale Earnhardt Sr. came from dead last twice to take the lead and then wrecked Terry Labonte at the line just missing the win. 2 years later he would get the win after "rattling Labonte's cage" again on the last lap. Rain rain go away... oops..Sorry I was thinking about myself....be safe down there!
