BROWNS ACQUIRE SECONDARY HELP (2 p.m. ET) The Miami Dolphins traded cornerback Travis Daniels to the Cleveland Browns for a seventh-round draft pick. Daniels was a fourth-round pick in 2005 by the Dolphins, where he played both cornerback and safety. Daniels played in 16 games last season, starting five for Miami. -- ESPN reporter Chris Mortensen http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp08/news/story?id=3544011Anyone know anything about Daniels? Starting 5 games for Miami last year can't really mean much...

Oh God No! Trading away our 7th round draft pick in 2009! God, this season is already down the tubes! Burn down the stadium! Eat all the candied apples! Fire RAC! Tar and Feather Savage!
Sorry, just figured I'd beat the doom and gloomers to the punch.
I know nothing about this guy, but I guess this was the DB move we've been waiting for??
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Hardly...I'm sure it's just move for the 3rd or 4th corner....or Safety depth.
Perhaps due to Pool's concussion. Although I'd like to see Gary Baxter come back as the backup FS...that is if he's all healed up and ready to go. Once we get the rosters solidified a little more, I think Gary has a good chance of being resigned.

I'd love to see Baxter back, but I just don't think he'll ever play again, unfortunately.
And, I don't think we ever were going to be trading for a "starting caliber" DB. I think we were always approaching it as getting a quality backup guy who could fill in if there was an injury.
With Pool being hurt, it'll be interesting to see who fills in his spot and/or if there is some shuffling around done.

Browns acquire Travis Daniels Zac Jackson, Staff Writer 08.20.2008 The Browns made a trade to bolster their young secondary Wednesday, acquiring four-year veteran Travis Daniels from the Dolphins for an undisclosed draft pick.
Daniels, who's played in 44 career games with 25 starts, has NFL experience at both cornerback and safety. He has 3 career interceptions, one in each of his previous three seasons.
The trade is contingent upon Daniels passing a physical with the Browns.
He started 14 games at cornerback as a rookie and started at both cornerback and safety last season. At 6-foot-1, he could have a chance to be the "big" corner the Browns have been missing.
Daniels will turn 26 the day after the Browns' season opener against the Cowboys. He's a native of Hollywood, Fla., who was a fourth-round pick of the Dolphins in 2005. He was a four-year contributor and a two-year starter during his college career at LSU.
Undrafted rookie Mil'von James was waived.

Daniels is pretty physical, solid man cover corner. Probably could drop back as S who lines up on the TE or bigger slot receivers too.

Looking at his history, he started 14 games in 05, 6 games in 06, and 5 games in 07. I wonder why the drop-off.

They moved him back to saftey, so who knows.
They moved him to saftey last year back to CB this year...maybe depth sort of thing, maybe he was hurt.
Edit: From Rotoworld.com: "Browns acquired DB Travis Daniels from the Dolphins in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick.
Terry Cousin and Mike Adams haven't been getting it done at nickel back, so Daniels will be given a look there. The former Nick Saban draft pick can tackle and has versatility, having played both free safety and corner."

Part of it was that he was a Saban guy who wasn't as in favor with Cameron.

He's got the size to play big recievers..he can play S in a pinch..not a top CB but this is what I expected outside of waiting for a cut ... Now don't be shocked if Phil gets another CB from the waiver wire.

From Sports Illustrated's 2005 Draft Guide:
Travis Daniels Position: CB Class: Sr School: LSU Conference: SEC Ht., Wt.: 6-1, 194 40 Time: 4.6 Selected by: Miami Dolphins Round 4, pick 3 (104 overall) BIO: Moved in with the first unit as a junior and has started 26 consecutive games. Posted 48/0/9 as a senior after a career-high 58 tackles and two interceptions the prior campaign.
POSITIVES: Well-built cornerback who can be used in press or zone coverage. Fluid turning his hips off the line, physical throughout the action and uses his frame to box opponents from the play. Reads the receivers eyes, quickly breaks on the pass and quick getting a hand in to deflect the throw. Comes up the field to support the run and likes to mix it up. Displays good hands for the pick.
NEGATIVES: Late reactor who freely lets opponents release from the line of scrimmage and immediately loses a half a step off the snap. Not decisive, quick out of his backpedal and hesitant when the ball is in the air. Does more hitting than actual wrap up tackling.
ANALYSIS: A cornerback prospect with excellent physical skills, Daniels must fine-tune the rough edges of his game to meet the expectations scouts have of him. Has experience at safety and could eventually develop into a center fielder at the next level.
PROJECTION: Early Fifth Round

Agree with you on waiting another pickup. The wire has been tight and no experienced CB's are rumored to be on the chopping block other than the ones we know about (Youboty). I'm thinking it'll be another young veteran.

Thinking about it, I really don't want a old bout to be flushed into the lake CB.. Get a experienced young guy who'll be here next season also..

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afcnorth/0-0-211/Seven-step-drop.htmlcornerback Ashton Youboty is having a great preseason. He had five more tackles against Pittsburgh to go with his interception in the first exhibition game. How does this relate to the AFC North, you ask? Well, Youboty was hot on the radar of the Cleveland Browns, who figured he would be a tradable commodity because he was a backup last year and the Bills drafted rookie cornerback Leodis McKelvin in the first round. But Buffalo maintained its depth and Youboty is playing very well. Now the Bills might keep him or, at the very least, increase the asking price. As evident by Cleveland's pass defense this preseason, the secondary could use the help.

Unless he's cut , we aren't trading for another CB and the fact we JUST did(even though it was a low pick) tells me Phil may have found out either Youboty's price from the Fins was too high a pick, or they aren't cutting him now..and if so it won't be till the final cuts are made.. Phil couldn't wait indefinately to start fixing the leak..

He's exactly the kind of pick you'd expect about now, a 3-4 year player, with potential, that Savage likes. I thought he'd wait unit the cuts but obviously either felt we couldn't wait because we suck, or didn't want to take the chance of not getting him, maybe both, but a 7th for a 4th year 4th, not bad, if he has talent. Has anyone seen this guy play?

I was hoping we'd get a shot at Youboty. Doesn't look like it now.

What happened to Darnell Terrell....I really felt this kid was going to make a roster this year, but I do not see him listed on the Browns anymore...or anywhere else for that matter.

Just couldn't cut it.. I suspect his inability to cover was the main thing..he was never fluid in his backpeddle and coming out of his break..I think thats what hurt him.. You have to be able to come out of a cut and break to the ball in as little time as possible..and you just can't allow recievers to get behind you.

I'm surprised that others are surprised about this. I just wish they had done it sooner so D secondary players hadn't already been "picked over" so much. My only surprise is they waited this long..............

I think if Gerald Lawson shows something he could be that last CB. Might be the best option with a dried up market.

I would have been surprised if he hadn't done anything..
I actually think Phil was working on this for a while .. He said a week ago they had/have ongoing talks with one team and they were seeing how it was going to play out.. I suspect the debacle Monday night pushed the envelope ... And he's not done..we don't know how this may play out..

I hope you're right. But at this stage of the game, we're really going to have to pony up to get quality to any degree IMO

First,Daniels will get looked at..since it's a conditional pick even though a seventh..the guy has to be better than whats here already. I suspect we'll see corners brought in as the cuts start , so Rac can have one to work with before the season starts.

For everyone that's calling this "a move" - it's not. He's a CB that was going to get cut by the Fins in the next two weeks. Rather than get nothing for him they call up Phil and offer him first dibs for a future 7th. Phil spends a fairly worthless pick and avoids the risk of someone else claiming him first.
Not a bad risk, but hardly "a move".
Here's the Fins side of the article: Dolphins trade CB Travis Daniels to Browns By Omar Kelly Sun-Sentinel.com 4:03 PM EDT, August 20, 2008 The Dolphins traded cornerback Travis Daniels to the Cleveland Browns for an undisclosed draft pick Wednesday. Daniels, a South Broward product who the Dolphins selected in the fourth round of the 2005 draft, started 25 games for his hometown team. But most of those starts came in his rookie season, where he played for Nick Saban, who happened to be his coach at LSU and the Dolphins head coach who drafted him. Injuries and inconsistent play have limited his production since. Last season Daniels started five games and registered 27 tackles and one interception, but he was routinely beaten for big plays. This summer free agent signee Joey Thomas was pushing him for one of the Dolphins' final roster spots. Trading Daniels to the Browns increases the likelihood that the Dolphins will retain Thomas, who had an interception in Saturday's 19-14 win over Jacksonville and returned it 24-yards. It's likely the Dolphins will keep five cornerbacks on the 53-man roster, and there are presently seven on the training camp roster. The Dolphins now have 73 players on the training camp roster. On Aug. 26, NFL teams must trim their roster to 75 players, but the Dolphins are already under that total. On Aug. 30, NFL teams must make their final cuts, getting down to the 53-man roster they will take into the regular season. Will Allen and Andre' Goodman have been the starting cornerbacks all exhibition season. Michael Lehan is coming back from a high ankle sprain, but he spent all of last season as a starter. Nathan Jones, a Dallas defection, has history with these coaches, and has played in the nickel package all training camp. Thomas, a former third-round pick who was in Dallas' training camp last season before getting cut, is battling with Chris Roberson and undrafted rookie Will Billingsley for the final spot. It's also possible the Dolphins could add a cornerback picked up off the waiver wire at the end of the month, or keep a fifth safety to fill the secondary needs. The coaches are experimenting with safety Chris Crocker in the starting lineup this week, having him play a cornerback role in the nickel package. "I think Crocker probably has some of the best cover skills that we have back there at the safety position, which helps us from a flexibility standpoint," coach Tony Sparano earlier this week. Dolphins Trade Travis Daniels: Palm Beach post.com Defensive back Travis Daniels’ up-and-down career with the Dolphins has ended. The team announced it has traded Daniels, a fourth-round pick in 2005, to the Cleveland Brown for an undisclosed draft choice. Daniels started 25 games during three seasons for the Dolphins, but his play dropped off significantly since his rookie season under Nick Saban, his former coach at LSU. Daniels had 62 tackles and 13 passes defensed as a rookie, but had a combined 63 tackles and six passes defensed the past two seasons. Daniels, 25, bottomed out last season, when he routinely gave up big plays and seemed to lose his confidence. Daniels allowed an average of 10.9 yards per completion in 2007, ranking among the worst in the NFL. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/blogs/conte...is_daniels.html

I welcome Travis to Browns country...
My first question is, will he start from day one?
And my second question is...if so, whose postion will he take over?
I'm sure Savage will continue to work on finding more help for our defensive backfield, "if available".

Gotta believe Daniels will compete with Cousins at the 3 spot...
And he may just provide some Safety depth...If he plays Special Teams...Color Sorenson gone...

Man I remember Daniels being touted as a 2nd or early 3rd rounder before running that slow 40 in the combine.
This is getting yucky...
So will Savage trade next year's 4th for Youboty? We'd stil have our 1st, 2nd, and 6th rounders!

Yeah...Terrell's weak point was his back pedal...but I really felt you could put him at FS....and try and keep the play in front of him...kid has crazy closing speed.
