Very sad news. Despite him getting a bad rap over the past few years, he's done a lot more good for the game than he did harm.

RIP

Wow, that's really sad. Like him or hate him, he served in his post with passion.

RIP Gene.

I hope that this doesn't cause a big problem in the Players' Union to determine who his successor is.

However, due to the fact that he's been battling a form of cancer that is so aggressive, I have to think they have a plan in place.

Wow... Count me among those who didn't even know he was ill. RIP Gene. Regardless of how I felt about his tenure as head of the player's union, he was a hell of a player and his passing is a loss to the NFL community.

I don't think anyone knew he was ill. Actually, I'm curious to know if any of the player reps knew.

Reading over some of the articles coming over the wire concerning his death, Upshaw was told or diagnosed LAST Sunday that he had pancreatic cancer. Your talking about maybe 4 or 5 days ago when he or the family found out...Terrible and sad loss to the NFL today and Labor in itself.....

Bit of a surprise. He must have kept very private about it.

I guess there's no reason to start a coup against him now. RIP.

He didn't even know what was wrong until four days ago. Why talk about an illness publicly until you know what it is?

I didn't know that until I read further down after I posted.

If that's the case, it must have been pretty advanced (obviously).

Pancreatic cancer is bad. You're pretty much guaranteed to die from it. Very poor cure rate, and very rapid progression. Usually once diagnosed, it's about 6 months to a year of life expectancy.

profootballtalk reports that he didn't even know about the cancer until the last sunday (the 17th). apparently, pancreatic cancer symptoms don't really show until it's in the final stages. poor guy. he definitely accomplished a lot.

it'll be very interesting to watch the process for finding a successor (stinks that he was so resistant to grooming one) and how this affects the next however many seasons.

It's a shame... but it was obviously his time to get called home.

RIP Gene.

They won't likely have any troubles at all finding a successor, the players had already started proceedings to have him removed from office. He was well on his way out the door anyway, whether he accepted that or not.

I just hope that whoever takes his place fights against the owners as well. Now, I'm not saying he should take it as far as Upshaw did (I'm not saying I disagreed with Upshaw, either). I'm just saying I hope there isn't someone that gets in there and bows to the ownership. On the same lines, I hope it isn't someone who bows to the players 100%, either.

I hope it's someone who can really help cultivate a middle ground to keep the NFL the jewel of professional sports.

It is a sad story. RIP Gene

Maybe now we will see a rookie salary cap. I know he was the biggest voice against. Most players want it and most owners would like to see one.

Let's hope whoever replaces Gene (along with his counterparts amongst the ownership) won't be so stubborn so as to kill the Golden NFL Goose that has lined the pockets of BOTH ownership and the players with loads of cash over the years. Obviously, NFL fans and national TV outlets are willing to shower the league with obscene amounts of cash. It would be a shame if dueling sets of egos ruined it for everybody.

Which is as it should be, imho.

Just because a man is a public figure, doesn't mean he should have to relinquish his right to privacy.

R.I.P. Gene... and thanks for your contribution to the game we all love so much.

After watching some of the clips on espn.com I don't think anybody really knew about it. One even mentioned that Gene may not have known.

As a Raider fan, I have to post something here. R.I.P., man we all will miss you.

Whoever said he hadn't learned of his cancer until the previous Sunday was correct. Some of his best friends didn't even know until it was too late to say goodbye. Cancer is ruthless.

Win, lose, or tie, Raiders 'til I die.
