The cuts Tuesday shouldn't be that hard.

The cuts later might be since we will probably feel like we need to keep a few that really won't help us much.

If I was the coach, rookies would love me because I would rather keep a few of them over some guy who has had a year or two and hasn't done anything.

Finding replacement scrubs isn't that hard.

This seems a bit silly imo; to have to cut only 5 players, and four days later you have to cut 22 more.

I don't make the rules/agreements , but to me it should be a cut down to 65, then on down to 53. Essentially a cut of 15, then a final cut of 12. Of course roster moves will be made, PUP and IR-ing some players, etc, which will lower the actual number of players released.

They are very close together for some reason this year. The first cut down is usually closer to the third preseason game. I'm thinking they are just trying to cuts down ASAP for the 30th since it's the final preseason game (basically).

LOL.....ok, I probably asked for that.

I would though....a 3rd year guy who hasn't done much probably isn't. might as well go for a new mix.

That doesn't mean all 3rd year players....a guy like McMillian.....history. Dinkins would be gone for Ciesack(or whatever his name is )

I thought the first cut down was always the first day after the last 3rd Preseason game (always a Monday Night game).... and the final cutdown is the day after the final preseason game.

If anything, it looks like they are giving teams a little more time between final cuts and the first game.

I'm guessing we'll keep Dinkins just because he has some value on ST. But, at the same time, I won't be surprised if he's cut.

You would think I'd know this, but I don't. My feeling was it changed recently to be after the third game, instead of before.

Dallas released CB Quincy Butler (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=10163).
A fine athlete, but has an injury history. Not suggesting we sign him, just listing some DB's as they become available.

Hmmm... maybe it used to be after the 2nd game?
I do know that the cuts have always been the day after the last game of the pre-season week that preceded them.

I saw this on the ESPN page posted above:

The Minnesota Vikings' most notable roster move Monday was releasing veteran linebacker Derrick Pope. To this point, it had appeared Pope would be the top backup at all three linebacker positions.

---end of blurb---

Now, I know nothing about Pope, but maybe some of you do. ESPN makes it sound like he's worth something. Thoughts?

this is my guess;

Jason Reda, K
Kolomona Kapanui, TE
Travis Key, DB
Philip Marvin, OL
Travis Thomas RB

there is a NFLE player listed on the roster

I think you are talking about Christian Mohr, who's an international player from Germany. He's on the PS and the Browns get an extra roster exemption on the PS for him.

He played in NFLE before, but he's from Germany. The NFL gives roster exemptions to teams for a player who's born in Europe, and they let them stash 'em on the PS. Serves two purposes:

1. Helps in theory to "globalize" the NFL by attracting top players from very small European club level teams.
2. Gives teams an extra PS slot.

The Browns have done it before...there was a WR from France I think. These guys rarely make the full year on the PS and almost never break out.

EDIT - Not just born in Europe, anywhere else in the world actually.

Yes, it is defunct ... but the league refers to them as an "International Player" now, not "NFLE".... every team gets one exemption for an International Player.

I have no idea whatsoever WHY they're still allowing it, but they are.

Mohr want to go back home and coach. It's the NFL European Coach Training Program.

Agreed Peen. This year is going to seem harder perhaps if "cut and run" due to our injuries. By that I mean if we run on the field with survivors, but we are protecting the wounded and having surgeries. Seems we are way thin now. Cutdowns ought to heighten that. Worry less if our ones had SHOWN US SOMETHING in preseason. Pretty aggravated with lack of performance and bad football I have seen thus far in Ought Eight. Just me and I am old and cranky before a fine soft food breakfast.

"Dallas released CB Quincy Butler"

No thank you...all I know is my son always " " when announcers call out his name. I trust his judgment as he is a big time Cowboy fan.

I'd rather wait for the final cut in Dallas. Why Dallas? Cause they picked up Pac Man who will start and they also drafted 2 CBs as well. Leaving 3-4 who were on the team last year to be cut. I want Oglesby but we'll see if he's the ONE to stay?

But they are the team to look at cuts to bolster our depth.

JMHO - Our 5? A couple of the No Name OLmen that or maybe we need them for the final game so that our OL w/depth won't get injured??? Definitely Reda the K
Maybe a DL that haven't found the field like Shafering the Hawaiin kid at TE who I can't remember seeing on the field and a DB or two...I hope Perry. Also Efram Hill haven't seen much of him since the first game.

FYI, the Panthers released Curtis DeLoatch yesterday. Could be a low key veteran to watch out for the on the Browns radar.

I read that on the ESPN ticker tape this morning...don't know the kid.

I just go on the Assumption that anyone cut in this first Cut ain't worth Spiddle...and if so that means they have had some injury problems to be cut! Only...and I mean only is if there is a veteran who the Coaches really like and respect but know that he won't make their 53 and because of that respect let him go early to catch onto a team, but that might be too old school as nobody would want that guy to catch onto a Divisional foe!

On the main site, (main); the 'ticker' states we waived Damon Jenkins on Monday.

Four more cuts to occur prior to 4pm today.

All our moves are complete:

We placed Joe J on PUP.
We placed Kasper on IR.
Waived two: RB - Austin Scott and DE - Brian Schaefering.

We are down to the 75 man limit now.

No surprises here, IMO.

I'm not surprised we put Kasper on the IR. I believe we felt this kid had a lot of promise, and his recent injuries gave us an easy way to keep other teams from getting him.

I also saw that JJ was placed on the reserve-PUP, meaning we won't see him until week 6 at the earliest, which isn't a surprise.

Tucker is still on active-PUP, which means he's eligible to be activated before this weekend's mandatory cutdown to the 53-man regular season roster size.

Kasper's not young though...he'll be 31 in July and has already went down and played Arena for a season. I'm not sure who his agent is, but he probably was able to snooker the Browns into not paying out an injury settlement, and rather keeping him on IR.

Well, if they agree with you take, maybe he'll end up on the PS.. But I'm thinking that if he's cut now, then the PS is out of the question.. I would have thought they'd have kept him until the final cutdown day if the PS was in the cards..

I'm guessing, he's gone.

I prove that being a useless fact and Google nerd is helpful!

Just a few notes - Anyone released now is not coming back for the PS. So no Austin Scott, but maybe Travis Thomas.

And Ricky Manning is terrible.

Thomas has connections to Quinn at ND. Perhaps that has an edge for him there.

Signing Steinbach - $49.5 million
Signing Lewis - $5 million
Drafting Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn - millions more
Restoring the Browns to champions - priceless.

He's on a level of terrible slightly above both of them...but that's because he had one really good, high profile game.

Manning was like 9th string in Chicago from the instant he signed. What a toad.
