They are anticipating an additional 15 inches for Haiti and Dominica with some patch areas receiving up to 25 inches.

If only you were at sea level so it could all just go into the ocean as run-off.

Hey! Look on the upside, if you end up completely turned into a swamp, you can claim the whole state as being part of the Keys & Everglades... imagine how much your property value will go up!

I'm not far from the Everglades now. And my property backs up to a wetlands preserve.

Could make for an interesting weekend if this thing comes through.

lol, the only problem is that the ocean gets that same amount PLUS the runoff....add in the tides and you get the whole place underwater. (Yes, it happened in 2005 with Hurricane Wilma). They literally closed US1 because the Ocean had it flooded with the high tide and 15 foot storm surge.

Should be good news for Florida...A blocking high should keep this moving general northwest until it gets to the middle gulf away from Florida. But this is very bad news for Mobile and New Orleans west to Texas.
This storm should be a major hurricane by late Thursday-Friday.

And this storm is already affecting oil futures

Oil prices spike as Hurricane Gustav nears Gulf
Tuesday August 26, 12:07 pm ET
By Madlen Read, AP Business Writer
Oil prices rise on concerns about Gustav disrupting oil output; rising dollar gives extra lift

NEW YORK (AP) -- Oil prices swung higher Tuesday as Hurricane Gustav developed south of Haiti, raising concerns that the storm could slam into major oil operations in the Gulf of Mexico.
After falling close to $112 per barrel in overnight trading, light, sweet crude for October delivery rose $1.22 to $116.33 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange by late morning trading.

If Gustav continues along a path toward the Gulf, it could mean an uptick in gas station prices ahead of Labor Day weekend.

James Cordier, president of Tampa, Fla.-based trading firms Liberty Trading Group and OptionSellers.com, said he expects pump prices to edge up about 10 cents between now and Labor Day as refiners add a hurricane premium to wholesale prices.

"Everything about this looks like a strong storm that would evacuate platforms," Cordier said.

The average U.S. retail price for gasoline on Tuesday was $3.672, according to auto club AAA, Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. That is down about a penny from Monday, and down nearly 11 percent from the record $4.114 reached July 17 -- just a few days after crude hit an all-time high above $147 a barrel.

Tropical Storm Gustav became a Category 1 hurricane early Tuesday as it approached Haiti's southern coast. The Miami-based National Hurricane Center said Gustav could become a Category 2 storm with winds of 96 mph or higher before hitting Haiti, and that Gustav will gather strength over the Gulf's warmer-than-usual waters.

Another weather forecaster, Accuweather.com, said that if Gustav passes through the Yucatan Channel into the Gulf, the storm could intensify into a Category 4 or 5 hurricane. A Category 5 hurricane is defined as having sustained winds over 155 miles per hour; hurricanes Rita and Katrina were Category 5 hurricanes, and shuttered most of the Gulf region's crude oil and natural gas production in the late summer and early fall of 2005.

The Gulf of Mexico's offshore crude production accounts for about a quarter of total U.S. crude production, according to the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration. The region also produces a substantial portion of the nation's natural gas.

In Nymex trading, natural gas futures jumped 41.5 cents to $8.24 per 1,000 cubic feet. Heating oil futures rose 5.71 cents to $3.2085 a gallon, while gasoline prices gained 4.97 cents to $2.9320 a gallon.

In London, October Brent crude rose 67 cents to $114.71 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Analysts and traders also questioned whether rising tensions with the West over the breakaway Georgian territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia would increase the risk of an interruption of oil and natural gas flows to Europe, greatly dependent on Russian energy supplies.

However, the dollar's advance against the euro, yen and pound had a dampening effect on oil's jump. Many investors buy commodities as a hedge against inflation and weakness in the U.S. currency, so oil prices often fall when the dollar strengthens.

"We think energy prices are absolutely tied to the value of the dollar," Cordier said, adding that oil would probably be up by $3 or $4 on Tuesday if the dollar was unchanged against other major currencies.

Associated Press writers Pablo Gorondi in Budapest, Hungary, Alex Kennedy in Singapore and Matt Moore in Frankfurt contributed to this report.

Nope, thas me. We stopped in Melbourne on the way back from Keys place today... (stitches come out tomorrow)

Well Keys, looks like you got your wish. The high is keeping it south of Cuba.

Thanks again for the GREAT time down there, Keys. It was exactly what we both needed. You are an outstanding host and it was so peaceful staying in the villa. I'd recommend it to any of you fellow Dawgs if you ever need to just get away.

BTW. when we got to Melbourne and there was water on both sides of 95 as far as you could see, My girl says "Did we just make a big loop back to the Keys?".........

If it was something more than a little rainstorm, the new title might be appropo... but it's a tiny little storm, just a little wind & rain.

It certainly isn't, and I highly doubt it will be, the Cat 4 monster that Katrina was.

It is predicted to be a Cat3 by the time it reaches the mid-Gulf, could easily transform into a cat4 beast by landfall. The Gulf waters are unusually warm right now. Must be that whole global warming thing.

But seriously, this will not be a few rain showers, especially if it hits the NO/Gulfport area who are still rebuilding.

Good thing is the levees have been repaired and damns have been put in, to help avoid anything like the Katrina flood disasters.

New Orleans considers evacuation as Gustav looms By Kathy Finn
1 hour, 20 minutes ago

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Three years after Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Louisiana coast, New Orleans residents on Wednesday again confronted the prospect of an evacuation as Tropical Storm Gustav loomed.

Not since Katrina struck on August 29, 2005, have residents faced a forced departure from their homes and businesses as many still struggle to rebuild their lives in a city famed for its jazz clubs and Mardi Gras festival.

Storm levees broke under the onslaught of Katrina, flooding 80 percent of New Orleans and killing almost 1,500 people in the city and along the Gulf of Mexico coast. The hurricane caused $125 billion in wind and flood damage.

With Tropical Storm Gustav swirling near Cuba and likely to enter the Gulf of Mexico as a hurricane this weekend, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said an evacuation could begin as early as Friday -- three years to the day after Katrina inundated New Orleans.

Jindal said he had activated the state's catastrophic action team and could declare a state of emergency as early as Thursday. He also put the Louisiana National Guard on alert.

"We all need to be prepared and ready to respond, from the citizen level and at every level of government," Jindal said.

Jindal, elected as governor in October 2007, is hoping to avoid heavy criticism that fell on his predecessor, Kathleen Blanco, for not reacting quickly enough after Katrina.

Federal agencies and the New Orleans city government also faced the wrath of residents over their response to the disaster, while President George W. Bush was criticized for his role, including his initial decision to view the devastated city only from the air.

After Katrina, chaos broke out in New Orleans as stranded flood victims waited days for help. Many residents who fled the hurricane have not returned.

On Wednesday, Gustav drifted away from Haiti and the Dominican Republic after killing 16 people. Forecasters warned the storm may still become a dangerous hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, with their models showing it most likely on track to hit anywhere from the Florida panhandle to Texas.

Jindal said if the threat continues, his state could make 700 buses available for assisted evacuations, which could begin on Friday for people who need help due to medical or other conditions.

He advised other residents of the southern parishes to review their own emergency plans and be prepared to evacuate if an order is given.

The state's Office of Emergency Preparedness held a conference call on Wednesday afternoon with the presidents of all area parishes and emergency personnel to review current conditions and disaster plans.

The Louisiana SPCA announced it would shut down its shelter and begin evacuating the animals to other shelters.
