Well, Gustav has hit the Gulf Coast, (is doing so as I type this), and now Hanna is a Cat 1 Hurricane as well, expected to go up the east coast and hit the Georgia / South Carolina area.

We also have a new depression that will be Tropical Storm Ike later tonight and a 4th storm just off the coast of Africa that will more than likely turn into Tropical Storm Josephine by Thursday......

Both Ike and Josephine are currently projected to be Hurricanes by the time they get to us in the next 8 - 14 days......

Very, Very active season.

What are those Africans putting in the water off their west coast to make all these storms?

That's Hannah just east of Cuba, Ike is ESE of Hannah, and Josephine is just off the coast of Africa.

You would think with all those polar ice caps melting the water would be getting colder.

Well I guess the good news is Gustav has blown quite a bit of Hannah out.

Ike is the one to watch for.

I agree so far the long range projections have Ike following a similar path to Gustav. Also they are projecting it to be a Cat 3 or 4 by the time it makes landfall.

Good luck man.. ..I will be in line (MD) for the "remnants" of Hanna if she doesn't decide to get stronger going up the coast...Just think though, if this were Dec, Jan or Feb., it would be a helluva snow maker.....

Hurricane Ike has now become a Major Hurricane reaching Catagory 3. It is expected to reach Catagory 4 status before making a US landfall somewhere in Florida.

I would look at the past 4 days of Hannah's movement for anyone looking more than 36 hours out.

You can't predict a hurricane's path, you can only make semi-decent guesses.

I will be going home this weekend to put up my shutters. Ike looks nasty...

Speculated to be a Cat 4 when he crosses the Keys. Consequently, the middle of the path they have listed now (12:30 pm Friday) has its eyewall crossing my house.

Florida Keys Evacuation Ordered for Hurricane Ike - Willie Drye

Hurricane Ike is forecast to hit the low-lying Florida Keys island chain early next week as a major hurricane. Given the Keys' limited escape routes, officials aren't taking chances and have ordered mandatory evacuations to begin Saturday.

As of 4 p.m. EST, Ike was a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 115 miles (185 kilometers) an hour.


Emergency-management officials in the Keys decided to order the evacuation on Friday afternoon after receiving an update on the forecast for Hurricane Ike, according to Jeffrey Pinkus, a resident and former mayor of Marathon, Florida.

Given that there is only one land route out of the Keys and onto the Florida mainland—U.S. Route 1, also called the Overseas Highway—officials are allowing plenty of time for the evacuation.

Becky Herrin, a spokesperson for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office—whose jurisdiction includes the Keys—said the Keys' estimated 15,000 visitors will begin leaving the islands tomorrow.


Keys residents are to follow in phases. Key West, the southernmost point in the islands, will be evacuated first, with more northerly islands emptying later.

The evacuation will be halted around noon local time on Monday, Herrin said.

"We anticipate a lot of compliance with the evacuation order," she said. "This is a big and scary storm, and everybody is aware of it."

Keys officials will not force residents to leave, Herrin said.

But, she added, "if they choose to stay behind during an mandatory evacuation, we don't guarantee that we can help them if anything bad happens."

Pinkus, now a building contractor in Marathon, said his family will leave Sunday. He will follow them when he finishes securing two construction projects in anticipation of Hurricane Ike.

Keys officials were told that the eye of the storm could come ashore at Marathon, a town of about 10,000 roughly 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Key West, Pinkus said.

"We were told it would cross the Seven-Mile Bridge [just outside Marathon] Monday night," Pinkus said.

About 80,000 people live on the Keys, a 110-mile (177-kilometer) stretch of coral islands that curves southwest from the southern tip of Florida (see map).

I hope everything ends up ok but Ike really scares me. it could be the worst storm of the season.

The latest model I just looked at shows Ike crossing by where you live as a cat. 4. The shear that was hindering development today is going away and the eye has begun to reform and the storm has regained its asymetrical shape and outflow on all 4 sides. Not good.

Looks like Keys lucked out. Ike headed south just east of Cuba, and just the outer bands are gonna hit the keys.

If there's any good news here, it's that this Hurricane has gone WAY west of where it was originally projected. Every time the project something it ends up far West of where it ends up.

It looks like it's not gonna hit as a cat 3. It looks from this picture that it is gonna be at least close to TS speeds instead of Cat 1

Well, we're back up and running at the hotel, and things are in progress to get back to business.

Overall, this wasn't a big hit, Lots of winds (50 mph+ sustained) and some rain. The rain wasn't the big problem. Surge waters were for us. We got somewhere in the neighborhood of 10+ feet of storm surge. Which is incredible for how far away the storm actually was. It would have been monstrous if it had hit where they predicted it was going to.

Some limited tree damage and minor power outtages (Good job Florida Keys Electric!). A bit of Salt water in the pools and jacuzzi's, but those can be flushed and will be up in no time. Overall, we got very very lucky. If this had hit like it was supposed to, then we'd be in very bad straights.

Thank you to those who kept up the positive thoughts and kept us in your prayers. This one was scary. Good luck to the folks in Texas. Be ready, the surge is high.

I know this is bad, but my initial impression on seeing the thread was thinking about the Miami Hurricanes football season.
