1) Steelers
2) Packers
3) Browns . . . . .
Consecutive sellouts: 72 | Season-ticket waiting list: Undisclosed

Browns fans are some of the most dedicated in the NFL. Cleveland is a football-crazed town year-round, and its loyalty has been tested like no other city. Cleveland lost its team to Baltimore following the 1995 season, and the "new" Browns have taken nearly a decade to get it together. Yet the fans remain rabid and hopeful every year, sometimes to a fault. Cleveland fans travel well and the "Browns Backers" are one of the NFL's largest and well-organized fan groups. About the only thing lacking is the stadium atmosphere, which has yet to reach the level of the old Municipal Stadium.

NFL's best fans? We gotta hand it to Steelers (barely)

The only problem with ranking the NFL's 32 fan bases -- other than the sheer insanity of the exercise -- is that someone must finish last. But let's not focus on the Cardinals right now.

The idea to rank the 32 fan bases was hatched by our Committee on Rankings in Bristol, Conn. With the steadfast belief that everything in sports should be quantified on at least a twice-weekly basis, we were off and running.

A team of eight esteemed bloggers was asked to rank fans over the past five seasons using scientific criteria such as "Tailgate factor" and "How well do they travel?"

When all was said and done, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers ended up tied for first. But much like the International Gymnastics Federation, we came up with an elaborate tiebreaking process in which Hall of Fame writer John Clayton of ESPN was called upon to keep things above board. Clayton, who grew up in the East Braddock section of Pittsburgh, picked the Steelers, which seems totally fair.

But even without John's gentle nudge, Steelers fans are deserving of the top honor. The decline of the steel industry in the 1970s coincided with the rise of the Steelers dynasty. At a time when the city's collective psyche was taking a major blow, the local football team offered a weekly respite.

A generation of young people left the city to find work elsewhere, but they remained passionate about their hometown team. And that's why your local stadiums are often invaded by a black-and-gold army.

"People save up all year and then plan their vacations around traveling to Steelers games," said native Pittsburgher Bill Hillgrove, a retired local TV icon and the team's radio play-by-play voice the past 15 seasons. "When you arrive at the team hotel, the fans are all waiting in the lobby."

The Steelers of the 1970s pretty much took over the Pro Football Hall of Fame -- a subject you might consider avoiding the next time you bump into Roger Staubach. But a great deal of credit for the Steelers' first-place finish should go to the late Myron Cope, who from his local radio pulpit gave fans a distinctive voice.

In 1995, a group of Steelers fans were roasting a pig in the Three Rivers Stadium parking lot before a game against Jacksonville and thought it would be funny to send the pig's head to Cope in the radio booth. According to Hillgrove, Cope spent much of the game referring to the pig on-air as Jaguars middle linebacker Keith Goganious.

Steelers and Eagles fans are no-brainers as top-five selections, but they seem to come at things from a much different perspective. The Steelers have had so much success over the years that fans can live through a 6-10 season without doing anything to harm themselves or others. In that respect, they take their cue from the Rooney family. I've heard Pittsburgh referred to as a "big little town," which is not something you'd say about Philadelphia. Eagles fans are just as loyal as Steelers fans, but they have a different way of showing it.

"You could drop a Martian into Philly the day after a game, and within three minutes, he'd know if the Eagles had won or lost," said Glen Macnow, a sports radio talk show host for the wildly popular WIP and co-author of "The Great Philadelphia Fan Book." "When they win, you'll meet the friendliest cab drivers, CPAs and newspaper sellers. Whey they lose, it's like a five-day hangover."

Unlike places such as Dallas and Miami, Philadelphia isn't home to a lot of transplants. People aren't trying to leave, and potential newcomers aren't arriving any time soon. It sort of creates this bunker mentality that seems to fuel passion for local teams -- but mainly the Eagles.

When Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins recently called local fans "front-runners," he made a fatal error. You can say a lot of things about Philly fans, but this has never been a community of bandwagon jumpers.

"Sports here are handed down through generations," Macnow said. "Grandpa Joe watched games at Franklin Field, the son watched them at the Vet and the grandson's now in the seats at the Linc."

Some of the stories over the years have been embellished, but I still think Philadelphia and perhaps Oakland are the last places you should wear an opposing team's jersey. Wearing a Cowboys jersey in certain sections of the Linc will almost guarantee you a fistfight. But for whatever reason (Halloween costumes perhaps), the infamous Black Hole in Oakland seems to have a more dangerous element.

I recall standing near the infamous section inside McAfee Coliseum during the closing seconds of a Cowboys-Raiders game a few years ago, praying that no one could tell I was from Dallas. Honestly, there's just something unsettling about a group of fans who make KISS seem like a folk band.

The Packers and Browns finished second and third in our rankings. Every NFL fan should make the pilgrimage to Lambeau Field at least once. I've done it in 55-degree weather in October and minus-6 degree weather in January -- and would recommend the latter for the true experience. The stadium is the league's most famous shrine and Packers fans are among the most loyal in all of sports. Sure, they love Brett Favre, but they love the franchise more. It's one of the few places in the league that feels like a college game day -- and that's a good thing in my book.

Packers fans also travel well. In parking lots across the league, Cheeseheads gather to drink beer with a man who wears a green-and-yellow robe and calls himself St. Vincent. I don't think it's any coincidence that most of our top fans come from cold-weather areas. Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Cleveland and Philadelphia fans will sit through anything. And I think there's something about the elements that make fans more rabid.

Browns fans lost a team, but they never lost their passion for football. The fan base has suffered through a lot of losing, but that almost seems to reinforce their loyalty. At first glance, I thought No. 3 was a bit high for Browns fans. I certainly wouldn't have put them in front of the Eagles, Chiefs and Broncos, but they deserve top-10 billing. The new Cleveland Browns Stadium (1999) doesn't seem as loud -- and as wild -- as old Municipal Stadium. But the Browns were smart enough to create another Dawg Pound in the east end zone bleachers. Last time I checked, a ticket in the Pound cost about $40.

My sincerest apologies go out to Seahawks fans. I don't know whom you should blame for the No. 20 ranking, although I can provide a couple of options. Other than the Chiefs, I think you have the loudest stadium in football and your ability to induce false starts is the stuff of legend.

Now, I encourage you to spend the next day or so arguing about this topic. Just remember: Don't shoot the messenger. They made me do it!

Oh man, I can't wait for the threads in the shack about this one!!!

All I have to say is, let's see this poll after the Steelers have seasons like we have these past 9 years.

Exactly. I'd like to see where the Steeler fans were ranked in the 80s.

Bengals, # 26, FYI.

Consecutive sellouts: 299 | Season-ticket waiting list: More than six years

As much as I hate 'em, you gotta hand it to them. That is pretty impressive.

Especially when the Browns no longer even have a wait list... might be why they declined to answer that question.

Steelers fans travel because the team has been good for awhile now. Winning brings that. Browns fans are loyal but haven't you seen alot more Browns stuff on people lately? All because of last season. These people bother me. I bought season tickets after the 2006 season before the draft. I knew the psl's would be cheap on ebay because of all the losing. Now after last season all of those upper deck cheap seats are sold out. I wonder why.

To all the loyal fans that stuck through the losing, I salute you, and all the "Browns fans" that have just gotten back on board... I will heed the old saying, if you don't have nothing nice to say....you know the rest of it.

Sorry to sound like an old grump but to me a fan is there through it all, it's nice to see but where was all of this Browns merch a few years ago on peoples backs, heads and cars? I heard people at traing camp say they haven't been there before and didn't know some of the bigger names on the team. Hey, who's that number 73?
This stuff kills me. Ok, I feel better now.

I agree about the new bandwagon fans, but those of us who have been around know who the real fans are.

And, I don't think not knowing a number means anything...I still don't know them all.

I'm pretty good with the numbers, thought it takes me through pre season and maybe a couple games into the regular season to remember everyone. The new guys are the ones I have to remember. They might change their number after pre season when somebody gets cut for example.

It's not bragging rights for me or anything like that, sitting up in the cheap seats where I can make out the number but not the name helps me out.

We all know who we are, the true fans. I heard some guy say a couple seasons ago after he saw my Browns hat, he said I can't support a loser. I wanted to crack him, I bet he has some Browns gear now.

But with any fan base, this is what winning does for a team.

If since 1999 you have had 2 exciting seasons (2002/2007), most people wouldn't be too excited on plopping their hard earned money on the Browns either. Everyone of us on this site are hardcore fans, but most people in this area like the Browns and when the Browns don't give you things to be excited about, your not going to show a ton of support. I don't think there are a bunch of "bandwagon" fans, but fans now with a reason to care. I am sure there are some that did jump on, but this is Brownstown and always has been. We have always filled the stadium even when we were truly terrible and the Browns Backers are everywhere.

The only place I truly see bandwagon jumpers is the hilljacks I see here that like the Steelers. The only reason is the hometown team sucked and since the Steelers were winning they picked the popular side. I know of 3 people I work with that are exactly that and admitted to me that was why they started following the team. like you said you stick with your team thru thick n thin.

I am not one who likes the "real fan" argument and feel a "real fan" is one who simply supports their team. Like I said above everyone of us if I was to classify us would be "hardcore", "die hard". We are on this site all the time. We read how upset we get when the team loses. How happy when we win. I mean some people can only afford to go to one game a year and we are no better than them or anyone else.
The only people I do not consider a fan are the yahoo's that are in the Muni Lot who throw on something orange and brown and just want to drink all day and cause trouble. They are the ones that have no interest in the game but how many beers they can drink. Where else can you have a Mardi Gras type of atmosphere on a Sunday?

As far as I'm concerned, we should be tied for first three ways with the Packers and Steelers...in fact it might be a four way tie with the Eagles.

It bugs me that people outside of Pittsburgh like the Steelers because "black is badass" or some stoopid reason like that, some like the Steelers because it's "cool." Screw them.

As far as I'm concerned, among hardcore fans, we win. Unlike some of you guys I'll welcome bandwagoners...I'd love to see a Browns Fan Nation that's above and beyond the sheer size of the Browns Backers. Hopefully we continue our success and grow this fanbase. It's cool to be a Browns fan, and I hope to God we can spread that message.

I do it every chance I get, you know how Batman has the Batsymbol? If I were a superhero, my symbol would be the Browns helmet. When people play word association and my name is mentioned, the first thing that comes to their minds is the Browns.

that surprises me about the steelers--i thought we'd be ranked ahead of them by at least a spot. why don't the browns have waitlists? are we not that popular anymore? I remember 15 years ago--even when we were mediocre--that it was hard to get season tickets.

or are we doing something different now? I guess I shouldn't be surprised at the Steeler ranking though...there are a few okay Steeler fans I know that love their team but love football more and give the Browns credit sometimes.

I saw this today and thought, well according to the rankings, that fair enough. I just don't understand why Browns fans lose points for their Tailgates? I've been all round this dang league and Cleveland Browns tailgates are at least equal to the bests in the league.

But somehow we end up with a 3 while PIT gets a 1? Is it because the prime tailgating lots are a mile away and the reporters never see it? That's the only thing I can think as a reason. You make that the 1 it should be and the Browns fans still miss making it a 3-way tie by 1 point.

Oh, and Green Bay fans are better. They are just better people than Stiller fans. And that's fact not opinion.

I think the reason we have eliminated the waiting list is that more tickets have gone on the market in the last 3-4 years due to the poor on-field performance (excluding 2007) and more tickets becoming available after the ticket manager was ousted for funneling tickets to a local broker. IIRC, that was like 500-1000 additional available tickets (or more).

We've got almost 8000 additional seats in our stadium than Pittsburgh, are the 2nd poorest city in the country (behind Detroit), have had significantly worse on-field product than anyone outside Detroit and Cincy, and have still sold out every games since the return in '99. 3rd place my... foot!

Exactly right, when I was a child and the Steelers were playing in old Pitt Stadium, Steeler fans were mighty hard to come by. I went to several games in that stadium and Browns fans way out numbered the Steeler fans, so much so I remember being confused as to why the Browns were playing there.I'm hoping the Rooneys sell out and the great Steeler fans can experience football as we've known it.Then we'll see what they're made of. It's easy to back a winner, if the team goes into the dumper its a lot... well you know

I know I'm known around here for my long-winded posts, but this one is a slam-dunk for me, and I can do it in one sentence:

No other fanbase in the history of professional sport has ever leveraged a League into granting them their team name, history and colors for all time...
...and they did it at a time when they didn't even have a team.

One sentence... slam-dunk.
Browns fans win- end of freakkin' story.

next subject, please.

There have been numerous threads about this topic over the years. After a few losing seasons it has weeded out alot of the fans who gobbled up season tickets and went to the games because it was the "in" thing to do at the time.

I use to go halves on season tickets, but now the Browns have one winning season, everybody is best buddies with the guy who has the PSLs. Where were they last year

I'll second this one. I called and left messages on every team's voice mail at that time. I called the NFL offices. I've never even been to Cleveland and I'm a fan.

Browns Backers are one of the larger fan clubs in the NFL? Last I checked, the Browns Backers were the largest organized professional sports fan club in the nation.

I've been to Lambeau, and those people are crazy for the Packers up there...I might have to give them #1 and us #2. Last I heard, the Packers' season ticket waiting list was something like 17 years.

yeah, maybe with a bit of spin, we're #2... but I'm still convinced of our superiority.

evidence:
I just found out that there is actually a Browns Backers chapter in Antarctica.

Let's see any other team trump my last two entries with evidence that their fans are better... simply can't be done.

NOBODY out-fans Browns fans. Nobody.

Yeah, you can tell the difference sometimes between the new fan and the old. Although it's getting harder to judge just based on what someone is wearing. I think it should be a requirement to be able to list the starter at each position out of memory before being able to enter training camp!

If you can list people at the depth positions, then you can get autographs or closer seat as well.

My jersey is easy to identify. I got in on the 75th anniversary of the NFL, the year bellichick dumped Clay Matthews. I've had that jersey for 14 years, and it still looks brand new.
