I thought I'd save board clutter and make a thread for other teams roster cuts and why you think they may be a good fit for the Browns. My first: Ryan Moats - Cut by Philadelphia Eagles cut RB Moats The Sports Network Running back Ryan Moats was one of eight players released by the Philadelphia Eagles Friday. A third-round pick out of Louisiana Tech in 2005, Moats enjoyed his greatest success as a rookie when he tied for the team lead in rushing touchdowns with three and was second in rushing yards with 278 in just seven games. Last season, Moats suffered a season-ending ankle injury that forced him to spend the year on injured reserve. The Eagles also released wide receivers Bam Childress and Jamal Jones, cornerbacks Therrian Fontenot and Nick Graham, safety Marcus Paschal, guard Stefan Rodgers and linebacker Pago Togafau. With the moves, the Eagles roster now stands at 67. All NFL teams must reach the roster limit of 53 by 6 p.m. (et) Saturday. _________________________________________ He's a guy from the WAC that made quite a bit of noise a couple years ago. Smallish back that could replace Harrison. I don't know if he can block but Boisebanger might.

Cut one small back that has trouble blocking to bring in another small back that can't block?
And have to learn a new system?
No thanks.

I'm a fan of Jerome Harrison, I don't want him to be moved. I think he's good for a third back. People say he can't block, well if he could do everything he wouldn't be a third back. I like his cuts and quickness. I hope he sticks. I'm pretty sure he will. No doubt about it.
How in the world can you fix something... If you don't know how it's supposed to work?

All I can say is "Wow."
People really do underrate Wright/Harrison and love bringing in other people...
Our running backs were SOLID last night.

You do know is that tomorrow there will be 22x32=704 roster cuts in the next 24 hours right?
I started a thread so we wouldn't have 50 some odd threads on individual guys cut by their team.
Now back to Moats. Does he give us something that Harrison doesn't? If he can pass block he does, because he is just as shify, and he may be faster. Add special teams value and there's an argument to be made. Harrison is quick, not fast. And if he can't block he'll never see the field as a 3rd down back.
And lastly....the flip side of your argument is more true than your argument. People here vastly overrate rather than underrate for the most part. JMHO.

This guy should get a long look from us for the backup SS-spot imho...he was Texans starter for most of last 3 seasons, over 30 starts
Texans | Earl released Fri, 29 Aug 2008 14:47:11 -0700
HoustonTexans.com reports the Houston Texans have released SS Glenn Earl.
---------------------
also, Bears released last years 3rd rounder LB Okwo...somewhat smallish and I dont know if he fits our scheme but I liked what I saw from him last night...he stood out the most from the Bears backups
Bears | Okwo released Fri, 29 Aug 2008 16:48:51 -0700
Vaughn McClure, of the Chicago Tribune, reports the Chicago Bears have released LB Michael Okwo, according to a team source.
----------------------------
and they also cut their 2007 2nd rounder....he might be a very good tweener DE/OLB guy for us
Bears | Bazuin to be released Fri, 29 Aug 2008 10:44:39 -0700
Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports the Chicago Bears have informed DL Dan Bazuin that he will be released.

I would like to see a list of the CBs that have been released by all teams and/or a ranking of the best CBs available. One injury to this young secondary, and the Browns wont be looking good. Phil already traded a 7th rounder for a young CB with hardly any experiance (I think he had 2 starts for the worst team in the NFL last year). Alot of people dont think a 7th rounder isnt worth much anyways, but thats how you find your Alex Halls or get a shot at a player thats going to be a highly coveted UDFA. Get your chance at a Leigh Bodden or a Josh Cribbs before all of the other 31 teams are offering signing bonuses. Other then the secondary or if the punter, kicker, or longsnapper has an injury. I think the Browns have the depth at the other positions, to where Phil wont have to look into, and keep doing his research for the secondary. If one of the Browns RBs has a season ending injury, Phil will have to look into that area and maybe Moats will be a good pickup. I have watched him on an occasion or 2 and he did stick out a little . I would rather Phil take Moats if any of the three current RBs has a season ending injury, rather then him adding Thomas or Scott back to the roster or even the practice squad. I dont think either player is worth bringing back for another look, even though they where in the system during preseason and would have more knowledge of the playbook. I know it was a tough situation to be in, but how about Thomas being blocked into the punter during the Giants game. I believe I have read on here that Austin Scott also had previose trouble. Mainly with the ladies . Neither player shown me any kind of breakaway speed, ability to break a tackle, hit the hole or create something out of nothing. I would be suprised to see either player make the PS or be invited to attend camp next year.

1) Travis Daniels has played in 44 games over his three year career 2) He has experience at both safety and corner 3) He has a history with Mel Tucker
You're not going to find starting corners with 7th round draft picks, nor are you going to get your "shot" at the Leigh Boddens and the Josh Cribbs' with 7th round picks. The whole concept of the diamond in the rough is that they are in the rough, as in, not visible to anyone. That's why you invite 40 of them to camp and hope that you find one or two.
Additionally, as our talent-level increases the chances of 7th round picks making the team dramatically decreases.
Thanks for coming out.

you are SO right!...those two were both UDFA!
not to mention a guy like Alex Hall, that has earned not only a spot on the team, but a chance to contribute his rookie season...
now, i'm not saying spending a 7th rounder on Daniels was a huge mistake, but your statement was totally erroneous...

Not only is Safety open to a pick-up...So is:
Defensive Line Corner obviously WR???
And folks gotta be aware that any CB that we might pick-up in the coming days is gonna be a 3-4-5 type Corner...You're not gonna find a Starting caliber corner from cuts...We need the 3-4 type guys...
Adams is gonna be here...So is Sorenson for nuttin' more than the fact we have no depth without em'...
WR will be an interesting cut-down for us...Ya' gotta think Steptoe makes it because of Cribbs ankle...Hubbard's PS material...He needs ALOT of work...Regardless if he doesn't make it thru waivers...
Corner also...Key/Cousin/Perry maybe...Davis should make it also...Leaving out the likes of Lawson...So if anything BETTER comes along tonight...It would be a 1 for 1 swap at Corner for us...Nobody BIG is coming unless we pull a TRADE...
If I WAS SAVAGE...I'd be looking to send a top 4 round pick to someone for a QUALITY Starting type Corner...We're gonna get the pick back for a QB regardless...And that pick we lose is an EXPERIENCED YOUNG CORNER that would be far and away better than anything you're gonna find on draft day...
I said...STARTING CALIBER EXPERIENCED YOUNG CORNER...Who???...No idea...But it would be every bit worth a 2nd/3rd/4th rounder...One of which we don't have from draft trading...Much like Rogers was every bit worth the 3 and Bodden we gave up...
IF we're gonna make that type of move...I'd bet it happens by Tuesday...
Go Browns!!!

Hank Poteat (CB) was released by the Jets. Might be a solid backup who, as a former Patriot, should know the system and can contribute on special teams. ::shrug::

What about Sam Madison, or R.W. McQuarters? PFT is reporting one, or even both of them, could be out in New York.

If you were to choose between these two, Poteat, or Ty Law, who would you choose? Assuming we would be able to fit any of them within our salary cap. Just curious.

I'd take Sam Madison over both of them if he's let go by the Giants. Ty Law is too expensive, and I think Madison is better than Poteat.

How so? I knew that they were UDFAs. But a GM could use that pick rather then try to outbid for him as an UDFA. Some UDFAs have multiple suitors and are offered signing bonuses.
I rush to judgement sometimes also but hold my replies when I understand where the poster is coming from. Rather than dissecting their qoutes.

I was looking at the transactions on NFL.com and i saw where the Ravens cut former 2nd round pick Dan Cody who plays OLB/DE. He might be worth a look if he's healthy.

You've completely missed the point of my statement, so laugh away if you like.
The point was that if we had KNOWN Cribbs and Bodden would be NFL stars, we'd certainly have used 7th round picks on them. But we didn't know they were any good and the point is that no one does, so having 7th rounder or not doesn't matter. It didn't matter in the case of Cribbs or Bodden.
Perhaps you'd like to read my entire post next time before replying. Like, the part where I stated that no one knew Cribbs or Bodden were diamonds in the rough. No one took Cribbs or Bodden with a 7th rounder. No one in the entire NFL and having a 7th round pick that year didn't help us get either of them.
Diamonds. In the rough. Get it? You don't know how they'll turn out until you bring about 40 of them in and see if anyone is worth a closer look.
It's complete and utter crap to think that trading away 7th rounders is preventing us from drafting unknown diamonds that would never be drafted even if we had a 7th round picks in the first place.
But, you know, feel free to laugh away if you still think that having a 7th round pick somehow helped us identify Cribbs and Bodden as NFL players.

I don't know. Wright does everything fairly well, but he isn't that great of a runner. Harrison can be a very good runner, but he can't block to save his life.

I personally don't think he's worth a look. But, PDawg put that in the "Interesting cuts to Browns" thread, so I thought maybe he thought Rudi was worth a look, and was curious as to what made him think that.

Yes there were quite a few high on Andy Alleman. I don't know much about him but I remember he was drafted higher than was previously presumed. There should be a few Akron fans on the board to set us straight.

Unless it's an injury issue I definitely would pick up Willie Anderson. He would provide excellent RT depth and may beat out Shaffer. Always liked his play although his lateral quickness has really slipped.
The guy is a Mountain of a man though.

I don't want to get rid of him. I just see his position, a third down back who doesn't play special teams and doesn't block with good fundamentals, as a position where we could upgrade.
Harrison is very quick and shifty but is not fast. He is not a threat to take it to the house on every touch like other backs his size.
Is Harrison irreplaceable? Not even close.

I loved how Sam Madison played at Miami. Very physical and played with passion.
I haven't really followed him for years so I don't know if he'd help. He would be a savvy veteran and there may be a role for him if his speed is at least decent.
