Safety latest big-name veteran signed, dropped by Patriots Associated Press Updated: August 31, 2008, 5:10 PM ET FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- John Lynch, the longtime Pro Bowl safety signed by New England two weeks ago, was released by the Patriots on Sunday. Lynch "It goes without saying but John is an all-time great safety, one of the league's classiest professionals and his elite play speaks for itself," coach Bill Belichick said of Lynch, who turns 37 on Sept. 25. "As has been the case in other situations, I would not rule anything out down the road." During their decade-long run of success, the Patriots have regularly signed veterans and often released them, only to sign them again if needed. Belichick's comments indicate Lynch may be in that category. He has played 15 seasons, 11 in Tampa Bay and four in Denver. The Patriots also cut Chad Jackson, their second-round pick in 2006. The wide receiver from Florida has been plagued by injuries and played only two games last season. Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3562696

Surprising! Beyond head probs, did he have another injury? Think he could help us, but man, kind of a surprise. Pencil him in on the "WE GOTTA GET THIS GUY" list this board knows and loves. Think he is a proven veteran. Pricey?

You can speculate all you want, but saying Pool is out until the bye week isn't known yet. Don't state it as fact when there has been nothing to even suggest it.

Browns | Pool questionable for Week 1 Sun, 31 Aug 2008 10:55:50 -0700
Mary Kay Cabot, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns S Brodney Pool (concussion) is questionable for the team's Week 1 game. S Mike Adams would replace Pool if he is unable to play in the game.
Questionable means there is a 75% chance he'll play.

Questionable is 50% Probably is 75% Doubtful is 25%
At least that's how the NFL says it is. But, Questionable usually means they'll play.

The dude's been cut twice in what, a month? I don't know - but I would think their could be a reason for that. He WAS a fine player, but I'll pass.

I believe that's called speculating.
It can also get you in trouble when it comes to money. *L*

While I agree that we need a quality FS for depth and the possibility of Pool not being ready to go, I don't think Lynch is the answer.
With that being said, it would be nice to have a veteran leader in the secondary to compliment our young studs....

I'd sign him. He would bring some veteran experience and leadership.

Why don't we go after Jimmy Williams, he's a free agent, can play both cb and safety, and he was pimped by a lot of people when he came outta Va. tech.

Only problem with bringing Jimmy Williams in is that I believe he's got a 4 or 5 game suspension coming to start the season.

We will still need help in the secondary after 4 or 5 games.

One of the best movies of all-time. Were you the one that quoted the same movie before?
You've just gone up several notches in my book.

It probably was me. I know I've quoted that movie before, and I tend to just randomly throw out movie quotes.

I don't think people understand... THERE ARE REASONS WHY PEOPLE GET CUT teams don't just release players that are good, the Patriots lack secondary help and still released John Lynch, Jimmy Williams has been getting a bad rap since being in the league, people get released for a reason.

It's amazing to me how many people forget that there is a money issue involved with bringing in a guy like Lynch in this situation. They see a big name guy suddenly available and boom,, what's the first thing you hear,,,"we gotta get this guy"
Just like Ty Law.. same thing

I don't think anyone is forgetting about the money. We're not talking about signing the #1 pick in the Draft. If the Browns wanted to pick up one of these guys I think they could figure out a way.
I don't think it's the NFL cap that's holding them back. It's Lerner's cap that is stopping this.
And as far as these guys being past their prime....Has no one been watching Willie McGinest? He can't even see his prime in his rear view mirrors.......

I don't mean to be disrespectful, but how do you know this?
From the way the Browns have been active on bringing in quality and big name Free Agents over the last couple of years, it certainly doesn't appear that Lerner is a type of owner that is stopping the spending of his money.

that drives me nuts, when people abuse apostrophes
it's not a question of being better than that, it's a question of not abusing the apostrophe.

And if we wanted to sign him, could have done so a month ago. The Browns showed no interest.
