Browns claim Young, add practice squad
09.01.2008

TheBrowns have been awarded OL Scott Young via waivers from Philadelphia and have waived OL Nathan Bennett, the club announced today. The Browns also signed the following seven players to the practice squad: LB Titus Brown, RB Omar Cuff, OL Christian Gaddis, S Travis Key, WR Lance Leggett, DL Melila Purcell and WR Steve Sanders.

Young, 6-4 and 312 lbs., spent the last three years with the Philadelphia Eagles as a backup guard and appeared in 13 career games. He was originally a fifth round draft choice of the Eagles in 2005 out of Brigham Young. Young played in a career-high 12 games and two postseason contests with the Eagles in 2006.

Four of the club's seven practice squad players signed today were with the Browns during training camp, including Leggett, Key, Purcell and Sanders.

Brown, 6-3 and 245 lbs., was an undrafted rookie free agent out of Mississippi State who spent training camp with the Miami Dolphins. Brown was a four-year letterman at Mississippi State with 170 career tackles and 18.5 sacks.

Cuff, 5-10 and 195 lbs., was an undrafted rookie free agent out of Delaware who spent training camp with Tennessee. Cuff ran for 4,364 yards and 65 touchdowns during his collegiate career at Delaware.

Gaddis, 6-4 and 300 lbs., spent last season with the Buffalo Bills and appeared in one contest. Gaddis was originally an undrafted rookie free agent with Buffalo in 2007 out of Villanova. He spent ten weeks on the Bills practice squad before being signed to the active roster on Nov. 14, 2007.

Mickens is about 6'0 185 needs to add more weight ..had 6 int's in 07..would like to see him in run support more..I need to see him a bit more this year.
NFL Draftcountdown has him ranked the # 2CB right now..so he is one to watch..
The thing is we 'll need to look at corners who are ranked about 5-8..we aren't gonna be drafting very high

Saw Moore a bit against MSU ..not bad..but again I need to him as the season wears on..

The Browns also signed the following seven players to the practice squad:

LB Titus Brown - Insurance. Not really that great of a player IMO, but can't ask PS players to be.
RB Omar Cuff - Seems to be like Chris Barclay. Great runner in college, but may not do much in the pros.
OL Christian Gaddis- Know nothing about the kid.
S Travis Key - Played well during preseason, and made the PS. Good Job.
WR Lance Leggett - Shows some potential. Deserves this spot.
DL Melila Purcell - This will be his last year as a Brown
WR Steve Sanders - Really deserves to make the active roster. He is ready to break out IMO.

I think you're right... I thought it was four, but just read it was his third in four years.

I need to correct myself..since we will have a mid-low first round pick we should be able to get the # 3-4th ranked corner depending if Phil doesn't move around ..or if we go another direction with that first selection.

I agree. I think three or four, certainly beyond two. I like about four of the seven. Good to see some loyalty to the best of last cuts. Still room to move and can be had for a song if good enuff. Decent rack

William Moore is a straight baller. He'll get a lot more notice this year since Missouri has a real shot at contending for a Big 12 crown, but man is he solid. He will be a good pro.

Mickens has good ball skills, but like you said he's pretty skinny. He's a bit too finesse for me right now as a first round pic, but I like his upside.

This one is for you.....

I watched an Arizona preseason game the other night against the Broncos on NFL Network. How does a guy, Dominique Rogers-Cromartie, who is so far off the radar, come slamming into the picture in the Senior Bowl, become a first round pick, then play so good in an NFL-(light) game.

The guy is going to be a Pro Bowler sooner rather than later. I know this is sacrilegous but i see a lot of Deion Sanders in this guy.

DRC got some light pub until the Senior Bowl and he just blew up. Playing at Tennessee State limited scouts views of him, but he was going in the first before the Senior Bowl. Small school corners usually have a history or performing.

Part of why he didn't go higher, despite being a top 20 pick, was because of the fact that he only has one kidney. Some teams were using it as an excuse that one bad hit could end his career, and thus he would be adverse to contact. Just an FYI, but I like DRC too.

Looks like some solid players are on practice squad.

I'm glad to see Key clear waivers too. I thought he did some good work during preseason games.

The Oline swap was a little bit of a surprise but Phil knows something or he would not have done it...likely NFL game experience was the main reason.

Mickens wouldnt fit the time of defense we run even though hes a corner, Vontae Davis, Malcom Jenkins and William Moore will be STUDS!! Look out for a guy like victor harris to slip into the 2nd round. I cant find any flaws in jenkins. Hes also solid with run support.
