Braylon Edwards ticketed for doing 120 mph

Browns receiver was cited after originally being let off the hook in Avon.
By Greg Saber, Newsradio WTAM 1100
Friday, September 12, 2008
(Avon) – Remember when LeBron James was ticketed for doing 101 mph on I-77?

He’s got nothing on Braylon Edwards.

Avon police have ticketed the Browns wide receiver for doing 120 mph in a 65 mph zone.

The incident happened August 29 on I-90, but the ticket was just issued.

Avon Police Chief Paul Romond says and officer has been reprimanded for not issuing a citation at the time.

Romond says the officer noted that Edwards, who lives in Avon Lake, was cooperative and had not been drinking. A female passenger, however, became ill and vomited on the dashboard of Edwards’ Bentley. That’s when the officer told Edwards to go on home.

Romond says officers do have ticketing discretion, but feels Edwards should have been cited for excessive speed.

Not to excuse Bray's behavior, but

That would give me a reason to be driving fast too. If I have a bentley and a person I've got in my car says they're gonna be sick, I'm prolly gonna hurry back home.

Another point, he could fight this in court if he wanted to. If the officer didn't feel it was necessary to give him a ticket at the time of the incident then he must not have been to concerned about him driving that fast.

I have a feeling that if this was a regular person not a football player, the citation wouldn't have been issued.

I'm just wondering why it took so long to issue the citation..

Almost sounds as it the police were debating it...

If I were doing 120 on an interstate highway, I'd have been thrown in the slammer right then and there.

What the hell was he thinking?

Obviously not many on this board have had a sick passenger riding beside them. No one wants to clean puke out of their car, especially out of their Bentley. While this doesn't excuse going 120mph, it certainly illustrates why he was in such a hurry.

think about it, guy pulls over braylon, realizes he's a brown, lets him go, goes back to the office and brags, and the boss goes "orly?"

that be dangerous, not that i doubt his ability to control a car at 120, more so that I90 isnt exactly the autobahn. I myself am an eastsider, but the time I have spent on the west side, well the freeway's were'nt exactly "smooth".

That was exactly my thought.. If I owned a Bentley, or really any car of value, I'd want to pull over as to not have some woman blow chunks all over the interior..

Man,, what the hell was he thinking...

I have a feeling if it was any regular guy he would have never gotten away with it in the first place.

He endangered both of their lives and the lives of anyone else who may have been on the road. I don't think we shopuld be making excuses for his stupidity.

The officer was going to give him a ticket ... but figured that since it was Braylon, the charges would get dropped anyway.

I agree with you pdawg. Going 120 is just flat out stupid. Good thing he didn't cause an accident - if someone had been killed, he'd be spending time in jail.

Plus, someone mentioned, perhaps light heartedly or tongue in cheek, that they don't doubt his ability to handle a car going that fast - Question: we've seen his hands, and his hand eye coordination - it seems to come and go. Do we really want/need him driving that fast?

What if the sun got in his eyes?

Plus, if you can afford a Bentley, you can afford to pay someone to clean the puke as well.

Also, puking on the freeway is not a crime, so pull over, let her puke, then go on.

But, this perhaps - PERHAPS - brings up an issue: what's he doing with a woman passenger that was so drunk? If it was his girlfiend, it probably would've mentioned it, don't you think? He might want to look at Shawn Kemp's child support checks IF what was going on is what I think I think was going on.

Plus, maybe he ought to pull his head out of his ass.

1. What and where did it say she was drunk,, what if it was the flu.....

2. If she was his date for that evening and she got drunk,, what would you like him to do,, leave her at a bar or party? The next day he would have been crucified for doing that to his date...

No No.. The only mistake that we know of for sure is that he was speeding. Something most of us have been caught doing at one time or another..

But he took it to an extreme... 120 MPH,, for that he's an idiot....

Yeah, you're right - it didn't say she was drunk - I was only making a guess. (I'm probably right, but we'll never know since being drunk in the passenger seat is not illegal).

Plus, the ticket came 2 weeks later, and the officer that was there was obviously so enamored of pulling over BE going 120 mph that he didn't give him a ticket (can someone find a precedence for that? For a cop not citing someone for going 120 mph).

I made an assumption, and if it were possible to have the facts of the case, which none of us do, I'd lay $500 down that I was right in my assumption.

Not a big deal, its a speeding ticket. Yeah it was definately excessive and he deserves to be punished but lets not blow things out of proportion or try to make assumptions.

It would mean that I actually own a Bentley!

I'd clean the puke out and sell that thing and move to the Caribbean

I don't know about the enamoured part Arch.. might have been that he saw that lady was sick or as you say drunk and that Braylon has his hands full.. Maybe he said,, you know what, take her home, we'll catch up with you later..

But what makes me think this might have been a delayed political reaction is that it took two weeks for him to get cited..

I mean, if I were the cop, and I let him go because of a sick or drunk passenger but my intention was to cite him, I'd have been at his house the next morning to do it.. I would not have waited 2 weeks..

Something political there I think.

I think you are wrong about the police officer letting him go. He was doing 120, not 75. I think he only let BE go because of who he was.

I think when the powers to be got wind of this they were ticked. Thus, the ticket was given.

We have a couple of police that frequent this website. I want to know if any of them would ever give someone a pass for doing 120. I think not, unless someone was dying.

Everyone who owns a car that goes that fast will push it at some point in time.

Especially professional athletes. I'd say about 95% of most athletes with cars like this have gone AT LEAST 120.

I really don't think this is that big of a deal. But then again, I am guilty of this myself.

i wonder if initially, the cop let him go, but then after sunday, and all the drops, he re-issued the ticket.

he should have issued tickets to the entire defense then. just for being crappy.

Its not about being a professional athlete or anything like that. People of all makes who have fast cars will open them up from time to time. But if the girl was sick and he was trying to get her home, then maybe that was his reason. They gave him a ticket and he will pay or contest. If you have a sick person in a car and the officers see that, they might cut you a break also!

The article stated the girl blew chucks in the car, hell, I would have let him go and mailed him the ticket later also!!

Do you really think every pro athlete is as dumb as BE was in this case?

Heck, I have a 1994 Bonneville that will do more than 120 mph. How do I know? I've driven them above that speed. On a track. MIS to be exact.

To drive that speed on a freeway is stupid, no matter the reason. Stupid.

I don't care about Braylon... he's a kid with a fast car, he's gonna open it up a little. It wasn't exactly mature or keeping with the level of professionalism that we'd like to see, but it's just a speeding ticket.

What I want to know is why a ticket wasn't issued and then was. What kind of shady crap is going on there?
