My grandma was taken to the hospital Saturday night, they thought it was food poisoning.

Well, Monday her heart rate started to rise so they took her to extended care. I don't have very many details, don't know how severe it is and I expect her to be ok but the words "intensive care" and "grandma" in the same sentence tend to freak me out. Especially when she's my last living grandparent and I'm 4 hours away.

Will do. Wasn't too long ago - least it doesn't seem like that - that I asked for prayers for my grandpa.

Prayers are being sent.

Good news!

She was taken out of intensive care earlier this evening but is still in the hospital in a regular room.

Still not out of the woods yet but I'm not nearly as worried as before.

Just wanted to update...

Was finally diagnosed this morning with diverticulosis including a ruptured abscess as the source of the infection. (It's taken this long to diagnose because they couldn't do the colonoscopy until today because her heart rate went crazy for a couple days but came back down yesterday.) She will undergo surgery today or tomorrow to clean out the infected area.

UPDATE: I was told on Tuesday they thought they were going to release her from the hospital on Wednesday. it didn't happen. In fact, she's due for surgery either today or tomorrow.

"The doctor called this morning and they feel that Grandma needs to have surgery. They have been trying to treat her without surgery but they did a CAT scan yesterday and the infection is still there. Essentially over the past 2 weeks she has not gotten worse but also she has not gotten significantlly better. She is weak, not eating and is on IV antibiotics. She can't go on forever not eating and on an IV and if they continue to wait she will probably just get weaker. So they are going to do the surgery ASAP. Possibly today. If not, over the weekend or Monday. She will have a colostomy. This means they will remove part of her intestine and put a bag outside her body with a plastic tube that connects her intestine to the bag. After 6 months she should be healed enough to have the bag removed and the intestine reconnected. So, say a prayer that all goes well. She will be in a lot of pain after the surgery. It's a tough recovery."

Suddenly, I went from optimistic to scared to death. She's 86 years old, I'm afraid a surgery of that magnitude and a rehab period of that length is something she won't be able to recover from, but I'm not a doctor.

No worries. Routine stuff for docs that know what they are doing. Our schools wrestling coach had colon cancer about 6-7 years ago. He was in his early 50's. The man was a beast. Ran all the time (wrestling coach AND cross country coach), as fit as a man could be. Bam. Colon cancer. They got it taken care of, and while he doesn't run anymore, if you were to see him, you'd never know he had a colostomy bag. And, he'd give Chuck Norris a run for his money - even today!

What I'm saying is, at least they found it, and they DO know what to do for it. She'll be fine.

Yeah I know it's routine. I'm more worried about her age than anything else. My other grandma died at 87. I thought for sure this one would make it into her 90's because until now she was in much better shape. Still has her wits about her too.

My other grandma broke her hip which helped cause her to go downward, I'm afraid something like this would do it too.

Please keep us posted as to how she's doing.

Hey Ammo,
I hope this helps a bit......Hang in there Bro......

He Will Deliver You

Today's Scripture

“Call on Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall honor and glorify Me” (Psalm 50:15)

Today's Word from Joel and Victoria

Are you facing trouble in any area of your life today? God is standing ready to deliver you. He promises in His Word that He is near to all those who call upon His name. No matter what you may be going through, have confidence knowing that God is working behind the scenes on your behalf. He promises to deliver you!

Notice that this verse tells us that our part is to honor and glorify Him. You don’t have to wait until everything is perfect to give Him praise. You can give Him honor and glory right now. You can thank Him for all He’s done in your life so far, and what He will do in your future. Call on Him today and focus on having an attitude of faith and expectancy. Speak His Word and declare His promises over your life, knowing that He promises to deliver you. Trust in Him because He will take you places you’ve never dreamed. As you praise Him, He’ll take you higher and higher into the life of victory He has in store for you!

A Prayer for Today

Father in heaven, today I call upon Your Name. I call upon You as my Salvation and my Deliverer. I trust that You are working on my behalf and choose to give You all the honor and glory. In Jesus’ Name.

I will pray for you and your family. That (colon issues) sucks and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

My great uncle died on january 4, right after I broke up with a girl I was trying to date. Suddenly, the breakup didn't seem like such a big deal. My great uncle died at 90 years and 4 months or so. He would've been 91 on May 17 and, like your grandmother, still had his wits about him and was sharp.

When you read things like this, a 3-13 season really doesn't hurt that bad in the whole cosmic sense of things...there are more important things in life like your family and whatnot.

Usually they don't need a colonoscopy to diagnose a perforated bowel from a ruptured diverticula.

Seeing this stuff everyday, I'm a little surprised they didn't diagnose it before seeing it on colonoscopy (unless I missed something, I apologize if I did).

Typically with this, she'll end up with a colostomy (the bag you mentioned). Most likely it can be reversed in 6 months or so. The main problem is infection and peritonitis from the rupture in the bowel wall. She'll be on IV antibiotics for a little while, and won't be able to eat or drink until her bowels start moving. Usually a drain is placed in the abdomen to help drain the abscess (fluid collection of pus/infection).

It's a serious surgery, but it can be treated. I will keep her in my thoughts, and I hope everything is going well. Let us know how she is.

UPDATE: You have got to be kidding me...

I've went from extremely worried to extremely furious yet happy at the same time.

It wasn't her colon after all, it was her appendix! So, she did not have to have the colostomy (bag put in.) Instead, she had her appendix removed. She is currently in intensive care and doing fine. The bad news is she has been lying around with a ruptured appendix for God knows how long. It could have ruptured while she was still at home or maybe that Monday that her white count shot up and her heart went crazy. It's unbelievable that they didn't figure this out sooner. She's also very lucky that she didn't get sepsis and die from it. Hopefully she will have a full and speedy recovery now that her appendix is out.

I hope we plan on suing the pants off that hospital because this is absolute crap. HOW CAN THEY MISDIAGNOSE SUCH A ROUTINE THING???????

My grandma easily could have died over something routine. Unbelievable. Thank God she was able to hang in there.

Wow, that's crazy man. I'd love to read over her chart and see how this went about.

With the ruptured appendix, it's basically the same consequences as the ruptured bowel/diverticulitis, except with the rutpured bowel, you're going to get more stool more than likely leaking out.

Nowadays, it's rare to see someone die from a ruptured appendix, where back in the day it could be a grave situation. With advances in antibiotics, things can turn around for her.

Glad to hear she's doing well. Elderly people take longer to recover from these things, so just give her some time.
