My iPod's almost 3 years old and should be ready to die any month now. (Apple says the estimated life of an iPod's battery is two years)

I could go the cheaper iPod nano route, but the more I read about the iPod touch the more I'm drawn into it. Especially when I see my friends playing with their iPhones. The iPod touch is essentially the iPhone without the phone. It has wi-fi built in so you can access the internet, check stocks, weather, etc, and has applications you can download. Basically it could be my "smartphone" without having to pay for the data plan service that I would require if I had a Blackberry.

So, anyone here have one? How do you like it? Just doing some consumer research here.

I am more than happy with my Nano. It would be nice to have more than 2G though.
I've heard good things about the Touch... how much are they?

They were recently reduced to $229 for an 8GB. I'm not even close to filling up that much space with my 30 GB iPod, but I have a feeling I'll go application crazy and fill up that space pretty quicky, the 16GB is $299.

Facebook for iPod touch application sounds really, really tempting to me.

Ammo,

I'm about to purchase an iTouch myself. A few of my friends have it and they all love it. If you go to the link at the bottom of this, you can get a refurbished one with a one year warranty for much cheaper.

i had one for a while then gave it to my sister after i got an iphone. i have a video ipod too, so i didn't need to have 3 devices. anyway, i really liked it. really easy to use, has wifi and it does have the 'cool factor' to it. i 'unlocked' mine so i was able to have a bunch of programs on there that you normally wouldn't be able to use, ie. original nintendo, snes games and a whole bunch of other stuff..

You almost have me talked into one now! It'd be nice to drop my $100/mo phone bill! If it had a web browser I'd be in the car right now, does it?

Yes, ONB, it uses Safari.

Don't confuse the iTouch with the iPhone. iTouch is just a touch screen version of an iPod. You won't be able to use the web features unless you are in range of a WiFi signal.

Very interesting, gentlemen. I'm going to see how my phone does on wifi, see if it would be worth it. I use my phone's browser CONSTANTLY... Dropping to a cheap phone and using the iPod for everything else would be ideal. No monthly charge seems a little too good to be true though.

I love my iPod Touch. I was originally in the market for a PDA but went with the touch and never looked back! I've loved iCal being built in along with the other "additional" features of having built in wifi and the obvious use as a music/video player.

To reiterate what florida fan said. The wi-fi only works in places that have wi-fi access, coffee houses, universities and such.

Phone internet access is created by using your cell phone as a dial up connection to connect you anywhere.

there is a drastic difference in the internet coverage that the ipod touch gets compared to a phone browser.

my wife has it and absolutly loves it. The best thing that she loves is that it syncs her calendar and address book.

If you're going to drop $249 or $299 on an iPod Touch, just go one step further, cancel your current cellphone plan, and get an iPhone. Like several others have said, the Touch can only connect to the Internet in Wi-Fi areas, whereas the phone can connect over a cellular connection. The phone also has GPS, a feature the Touch doesn't, and its pretty damn handy. You can have it find your present location and then do a search for just about anything in your vicinity and bring up addresses and phone numbers directly from that. Probably one of the best features the phone has, if you ask me. The only downside to the phone is that you won't get as much storage space for the same amount of money.

Since I live near a college campus and spend a lot of time on one, finding wifi should be a non-issue for me.

I'm starting to hope my iPod gives out soon.

I refuse to go back to at&t. I left them when they were Cingular for Verizon and I've never looked back. Verizon is far, FAR superior.

Fair enough. I've been with AT&T for almost four years with no trouble, but that's neither here nor there. The Touch is cool, but for my money the Phone is way better.

Just a couple things.

The iPod Touch does not come with a GPS but there are several apps you can download for free that are GPS apps. Just go in the app store and you can get one for free.

Also, since 95% of my waking hours are spent at or near a college campus, wi fi is no issue to me, but if you are in an area where there is no wi-fi, then an iPhone might be for you, but it is too expensive for me personally.

Like I said in my original post, you can get a refurbished iTouch for a little over $200.

Thank you, I get that. But where I live there are tons of business and I pick up their signals by accident all the time. Plus a work about a mile from my house where there are even more signals. It probably won't work, but it's worth a shot! I'd hate to give up my Mogul, but money talks! The husband gets way too big of a discount from Sprint to take any chances too.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

I'm not familiar with any GPS apps for the iPod Touch, but I don't have one so I'm not too concerned about it. I don't know how it would work, as the Touch doesn't have any wireless connectivity enabled other than Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi triangulation thing is similar but its not going to function the way the iPhone's GPS does.
