Premature coachification? Just extended RC and key staff right?

How many years left on RC's deal left?

Those of you who thought the Browns would be 500 or better this year were dreaming. IMO, as ususal...

Other than the coaching questions and concerns, take a look at reality. The Browns have a young, thin secondary, below average LB's and we run a 3-4, a redone D-Line with 4-3 converts starting, a new inexperienced D-cord, two young inexperienced QB's, an over-rated,(by most here),underproducing, injured 0-Line, the depleted WR corps are not producing and a very, very tough schedule that makes last years look like a cake walk... Hum....

Among other things...

I was thinking that BROWNS with the additon of Rogers and Williams would be a much better team on Defense. At the least a much better team against the run, However I did not take into a account the are Linebackers are not that talented. I do think that Romeo has not managed the games the Browns have played very well. In the first game he kicked a field goal when we needed a touchdown to stay in the game against the Cowboys. In the second game against the Steelers, the Browns were driving in the fourth quater he ran for it up the middle on 1st and 2nd on that drive and tossed on Third Down only to kick the ball on 4th Down when we needed a touchdown. We as a team need to be more aggresive in the RED ZONE. His clock management at the end of the game has been miserable. in every game in the Fourth quater we should be in a no-huddle offense and we continue to take our time and get penaltys for taking to much time to get the play started. Either during the season or at the end of the season we are going to have to replace Romeo. I WANT THE BROWNS TO WIN. I come from Chicago for most home games and I am tired of watching the Browns loose season in season out. Lets get a coach that can get us as to the SuperBowl.

Dead Wrong.

Even beat up, they are still producng plenty for this O to flurish....QB cant execute, teams have no respect for our short passing game, give us a big cushion, keep the saefties deep, LB's can soley concentrate on Lewis. On third down....rush 4, drop LB's and Nickel guy into a zone and let DA show ya who he throwin too, safeties and Lb's all over whoever it is. Same stuff we saw at the end of last season, when we were healthy...same DA.

Is DA the entire issue?

No, we have to get a short-to-mid level passing game going, so the defense has to stop something other than Lewis's, gut run's and the skinny post of BE and KW2.

Somebody is botching something up on our coaching staff, if its Chud...then RAC has to do something....but history repeats itself.....what happened the last time we had a botching OC? Nothing...

Critizing RAC is not unfair...assigning all the blame is.

This is what gets me.... I know the LBers are the popular whipping boys of the defense but let's look at a few things shall we? ....

Last year, our weak defense gave up 145 ypg rushing against teams like the Jets, 49ers, Rams, and the Dolphins.. so far this year they are giving up 129 ypg against the Cowboys, Steelers, and Ravens, yet they suck... We gave up 22 ppg last year against the same sad weak schedule and this year we are giving up 23.9 including some gifts courtesy of the offense, yet they suck... They lost a corner in the preseason, they have played some without one of their starting safeties, and they lost a starting OLB and a DE for the last game.. yet they get no credit for the injuries, they just suck...

So let's recap, our defense, with a new coordinator, some injuries and DL and LBers who have never played together before, is roughly playing the same as it did last year only against better competition and in situations where we are always behind because our offense can't score.... but they suck and lack talent...

Our offense, with the same coordinator, the same returning 3 pro-bowl players who all played together last year and some injuries, has gone from scoring just over 25 ppg to a league worst 8.7 ppg and people post list after list of excuses as to why we should just sit around and wait for that to improve when our #2 WR and slightly above average RT come back....

I'm sorry, I don't get it.

The only really bad half our defense has played where they gave up more than 10 points in a half (without the offense giving up most of it) was the first half against the Cowboys... the only half where our offense has looked good and scored more than 10 points is... well that hasn't happened yet.

I think all the speculation is way too premature BUT I can hear the Fat Lady warming up.Especially if we go 0-4 this week. God forbid.

We all know the world isn't black and white, cut and dry. It's all various shades of grey. However, let's make like a gypsy and gaze into the future.......

This Sunday, we're on the road and 3.5 point underdogs. From there, we have the following games in consecutive order:

Giants
Redskins
Jags
Ravens
Broncos
Bills

If we lose to the Bengals, which is a distinct possibility, the combined records of the teams we have to face over the following six weeks is:

14-3

There are zero indicators which would suggest that we're pulling out of this funk. That means there's a reasonable chance that we could be 0-10 when facing the Texans at home. After that, we get the Colts, Titans, and Eagles.

Yikes.

So no, the speculation is FAR from "premature." In fact, I think before it's all said and done, RAC stands a better chance of not surviving the season than making it to the end.

I believe that the next HC of the Browns will be a veteran coach. We're a veteran team that needs more than a "father figure" to bring along the young players. We need a PROVEN guy who can smack the ego's into line, take the team by the scruff of the neck, and force them into shape. That isn't RAC. Never has been.

Over the years, the litmus test that has always tended to ring true is a rather simple one. Take a look at any HC in the league who's lost his job, and ask yourself this question: If he's on the open market, and if you were responsible for hiring the next HC of your organization, would you take that person? In this case, would you take RAC?

We know what the concencus would be on that one. For some of us, we've felt that way all along.

So, on to coaching candidates. The problem with Cowher is that he'll want complete control, and he won't get that here. Crennel wasn't Savage's hand-picked guy, so he'll survive. Holmgren is going to retire. I think that leaves about 4 or 5 cadidates. Billick will get a few sniffs. He's a smart guy who's viewed in a much better light than guys like Fassel. Denny Green, at one point in his career, was viewed as a great HC in this league. The luster has pretty-much been rubbed off of his career after his meltdown in 'Zona. I think Haslet will get another shot, and deservedly so. But IMHO, Marty is going to be the front-runner when the dust settles. Don't worry about his Super Bowl record. Worry about becoming a winning franchise first.

My only request.

I liked that when Jim Tressel accepted the OSU job he played up the rivalry with Michigan, he focused on it and he proclaimed how many days until that game.

My only request with the next coach is that he understands the rivalry we have with Pittsburgh and that we concentrate on winning that matchup twice a year.

I want to beat Pittsburgh. If we do that I believe that everything else will work its way out.

I often silently wondered why no other teams had grabbed RAC before we made him his first head coaching spot in the NFL. But thats not the point.

I hate the fact were even having this discussion

I am neither smart enough nor informed enough to figure out why Marty would even THINK about coming back. Cowher makes a lot of sense to me. I assume he would want more control of the behind the scenes stuff. Does not seem like a bad idea to me. With Opie pulling the strings- in the words of Dr. Phil - "Hows that working out for ya?" He resigned a one year wonder QB a year after giving up nearly an entire years worth of draft picks for THE franchise QB who looks clean and proper carrying his clipboard every week.

This team was an afghan sweater waiting for the first string to get pulled to start unraveling it. Severe lack of depth at RB, a bi-polar WR who is either posing for his next cover of GQ, or doing his best impersonation of Dennis Dropcutt, and a defense patched together less effectively than dental floss stitching a bullet wound. Opie needs to be held accountable as well.

And one final note- why would it makes sense for the Browns to promote an offensive coordinator who's offenseive schems have produced all of 26 points in 3 games, and only 1 TD in the past 10 quarters?

"He resigned a one year wonder QB a year after giving up nearly an entire years worth of draft picks for THE franchise QB who looks clean and proper carrying his clipboard every week."

What are you talking about? We gave up our 2nd round pick in the 2007 draft and our first round pick in the 2008 draft. That is not an entire years draft.

If you want to complain that we got Quinn, Rogers, and Corey Williams for our entire first day of the draft (and Bodden), then fine.

"With Opie pulling the strings- in the words of Dr. Phil - "Hows that working out for ya?" "

Under Phil, our talent has improved (IMO)

QB - vastly improved (even with DA struggling, I have more faith that either DA or Quinn will step up than I did with Frye/Couch/Holcomb)
RB - slightly improved (Jamal is better than Droughns/Green...better depth)
WR - should be vastly improved, but we'll give an incomplete for now (until we get a 2nd healthy WR with JoeJ or Stallworth and Edwards remembers he is allowed to catch the ball)
TE - even (Heiden and Winslow were here)
OL - vastly improved (Thomas, Steinbach, Fraley, even Shaffer at RT are all better than their predecessors)

DL - slightly improved (i'm willing to give the new guys a season before too much harsh assessment, but Rogers has looked great so far)
LB - even (Andra hasn't improved, D'Qwell is a slight upgrade, but Wimbley/Hall/McGinest have been disappointments to different degrees)
DB - slightly worse (mostly because Wright, McDonald are green...but also because Phil doesn't seem to understand the value of an experienced Safety in the defensive backfield directing traffic)

K - same

Kick Returns - vastly improved (Cribbs obviously is the big reason)
Kick Coverage - improved (Cribbs again the biggest reason)

Now, you might disagree with my assessments, but some seem pretty clear at least to me. Phil has taken a talent poor team and, while we still have many holes to fill, he has upgraded the talent across the board. Now, the question remains to see if he can finish the job to making us a contender. I think he can, you might not.

Good post. I hadn't even thought of the possibility of 0-10...yikes.

I do sort of agree about RAC. I feel he was the right hire at the time. We needed someone to steady the ship and he did that. If things don't turn around, then I do think we need to bring someone in to get egos in check and get the most out of the talent we have. Who? I have no clue.

Under BD we had Anthony Henry.
BECAUSE of BD we don't have him now. He 'upset' him off (the correct word for this emotion starts with 'p') so bad that AHen wouldn't stay here even after he knew BD was out.

I hate these kinds of threads anyway. It's just a bunch of people throwing out a bunch of names for a team who hasn't fired their coach yet. Silliness.

Tom Coughlin should have been fired after only two games last year. The buzzards were circling his dead carcass in the national media.

I bet those same fans are quite happy their advice wasn't taken.

Fans are fickle, and go off of emotion and not rational thought. Hopefully those powers that be can make the right decision by thinking clearly.

there have been a lot of 0-2 coaches who have been fired during the season.

coughlin won the superbowl.

great for him, everybody loves a redemption story. however the odds of the browns recovering from this and making the playoffs are slim. a losing season seems most likely and losing the season would likely mean the end of RAC.

naturally anybody who puts this altogether is going to speculate. maybe its a little early, i dont think so.

That's a great point. It doesn't mean RAC shouldn't be fired, or that he should. I do wonder if it means the Giants would not have won the Super Bowl if they had,....now that cannot be proven.

What does have a track record is the continued poor pre-game preparation of the Cleveland Browns.

Actually, it can't be proven, but it can be pretty well looked at historically. When was the last time a coach was fired during the season and their team won the Super Bowl?

I would have to agree. I know everyone expects me to pile on, but RAC is still our HC. We don't have a "back up HC" on the bench that may or may not be an upgrade.

I'm hoping RAC will improve. I'm hoping he can light a fire under these players arses. I'm hoping he'll succeed.

I'm not trying to dog those who are "projecting what might be". But for me, I've decided to hope for the best for RAC and will consider who I may want as a furure HC when and if RAC is let go. But not before..................

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Didn't Marty get us to the playoffs at 8-8 (Only to lose to the Phins) after taking the reigns midseason during his first HC gig? I know it isn't the SB but he did turn around a team midseason.

The way things are shaping up in the AFC 9-7, 8-8 could get you into the playoffs so a turn around isn't entirely out of the realm of possibilities. However, as things look now us going 9-4, 8-5 the rest of the season seems to be beyond the realm of possibility.

I am not sure if RAC will go midseason or at the end or be given a pass due to the injuries, in any case I am sure his game day decisions, team preparation, clock management will be called into question if it hasn't already.

As I view it, if we did change the HC, the new coach would be getting some of his key players off injury in a few weeks, the ones who are now playing hurt would have slowly healed (thereby playing better) and everything would be improved some weeks after the change and it would look like a good decision to have changed coaches when they did.

on the one side we have people like Ballpeen...who thinks Romeo is a goof and not just wants him fired but publicly hanged (ok, not hanged...but he feels strongly).

and on the other side we have someone like ddubia who's got Romeo in his sig. and like him, many support Romeo.

For me - Romeo kinda' lost me last year when he flipped a coin to decide on his starting QB. This sends the starter into the game with no confidence. And, of course, it was the wrong decision since the coin flip winner was replaced early in the game for poor play and then was traded across the country the next day.

Butch Davis lost me in much the same way...picking a QB because of a gut feeling. The HUGE difference is that BD was a liar and a control freak and he was so easy to hate. Romeo is a GOOD GUY. I WANT Romeo to succeed...but I don't like his decision making - method of choosing a QB, kicking FG's with 3 1/2 min left when we're down 7, punting from the opponent's 30something yard line, keeping Harrison (a play-maker) off the field except for one or two plays, etc.

The players like Romeo. He's a nice guy. We ALL like the man that is Romeo. But that's not enough.

If we keep losing then he will have to go. I will be both happy and sad at the same time. (happy is probably the wrong word...I guess more like satisfied that it's the right thing to do)

I have RAC in my sig not because I like him. But I put him there immediately on his becoming the HC. I support the HC whomever he is.

It's hard for me to attribute all things bad as RAC's shortcomings. He makes mistakes. They all make mistakes. Hell, Joe Gibbs lost a game for the Skins by calling two time-outs in a row which is not allowed. With the resulting penalty that decision took his team out of any chance of making the last minute comeback. Joe Gibbs is not stupid. Had RAC done that the fandom would be forever calling for his head. Just as many are now doing even though RAC's bad? decisions have never come close to that kind of debacle.

What many see as a stupid decision is just an opposite opinion of what should have been done. In the end, the opposite opinion cannot ever be proved to have made the least bit of difference in the outcome. Or if it does prove to be "more" right, it is only the advantage of hindsight that make them so damn sure of themselves after the fact.

Those of the opposite opinion have the luxury of never having the possibility of seeing their opinion fail. That is their true advantage over the HC.

crennell has strengths, obviously.

he is great about keeping calm in the face of adversity. he is steady, supportive and loyal to his staff and starting players. he doesn't throw anybody under the bus, and handles the media pretty well. romeo isn't a fake.

these things are great for a team that has little talent and confidence. i think he was a good hire for a team that was in total disarray. romeo has had a great influence on the players as far as conduct and composure. these guys don't showboat, throw fits or blame each other publicly for the most part. i love the character of the team as far as that goes, and it's a reflection of the coach.

i don't see the players giving up and that says a lot. this team does have some grit and that can be seen on goal line stands and 3rd and short, when the defense performs pretty admirably most of the time.

however, this team also has problems lining up correctly, is penalized a lot, doesn't score much in the first quarter of games, doesn't adjust well at halftime, calls timeouts due to confusion almost every game, and almost never uses audibles or a no-huddle. i don't think i have ever watched a team that was worse at managing time towards the end of a half.

these problems should not be a recurring theme over several years, but they have been. these issues have to be corrected if the team has any chance of being a playoff contender, and in my opinion all of these things are coachable.

it is reasonable to expect the head coach to address and correct these types of problems. hopefully the team will improve in regard to them, but i don't have faith in RAC anymore as far as that goes.

hope he can prove me wrong.

I'm not going to argue with that statement.

hooter - I like Romeo a lot. He's a guy with character and for the most part he and Phil have brought in guys with character. He's a guy that we all want to have success.

Thanks for the clarification...I don't want the guy hanged, stoned, or anything like that...the "Romeo Must Die" was simply a movie title that seemed appropriate.....but no question in my mind he needs to be replaced ASAP...and I expect that to happen sometime Monday or Tuesday unless we just blow out the Gals. I am not even sure that will get it done for the guy...I think Lerner is on the cusp of being a active owner.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

I don't believe we have to blow out the Bungles. But we damn sure have to beat them. If we do win I believe Romeo is probably safe for the year. Barring some catastrophic loss that is too embarassing to ignore.

But I do believe that he'll be gone at the end of the year if we don't at least break even. Which is gonna be hard to do even if we do win Sunday.

I don't know really to know what to think.

There seems to be an equal chance of 1 of 3 outcomes ... gone after the bye, gone after the season, or remains as coach. I don't think most people in the organization are as down on RAC as many on this board are. I'll go one further and say that at the end of the year - if he makes it that far - there will be extenuating circumstances that keep him on ... injuries, schedule, young first time coordinators ... even if our record is putrid. I just don't get the feeling that Savage really wants to start over with a new coach.

I want to see a cut down on the penalties. That is my ultimate indictment of RAC. I want to see disciplined football regardless of whether it results in a W. I don't care if he shows emotion on the sideline or not.

I also don't want to see any more egregious boneheaded calls on the sideline as if the game moves too fast for him to think. I would say 90% of the calls are fine even if they are debateable. The timeout last year just to see if he wanted to challenge the call is the 2nd worst decision I've ever seen a coach make outside of the Gibbs fluff last year. Deductive reasoning in a quick fashion would have prevented such a bonehead call. But he obviously couldn't think that fast. Then he wouldn't own up to it.

Just one time I'd like to see him say, "I blew that one." It would give me hope for future decisions. Always having an answer to why something happens makes me think he really believes that everything is grey ... no absolutes in certain situations ... and that is just not the case.

The other thing that really irks me is saying things like I've got in my sig. To me, that is such a defeatist attitude. I don't care the reason why he's saying it ... maybe playing up to the media ... whatever ... it sets a bad tone, and implies it's ok to not get the job done. Whether players want to admit it or not, I think it has an effect. Show some confidence just sometimes. I know as a fan when I hear him say stuff like that, I lose confidence in our chances.

The optimist in me is crossing my fingers that tomorrow is the beginning of a turnaround for us. An upset over the Giants, and we are back on track. We were 1-2 last year ... not too far away from 0-3. Hope I'm right. I think how we play the game tomorrow - even if we win - will be a good indicator of things to come. This team will need a huge jolt of confidence going into the Giants game.

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...
