Take the Big 10, Pac 10, Sec, Big 12, ACC, Big East, and Notre Dame and break them up. Scramble'em. Every year, each team should play a 12 game season. Of those 12 games, each team has to play 2 teams from one of the aforementioned conferences. Think about it. Take USC for example.
In 2009, their schedule could go like this:

1. Ohio State
2. Tennesee
3. Arkansas
4. Cincy
5. Georgia Tech
6. Clemson
7. Penn State
8. West Virginia
9. Arizona St.
10. Oregon
11. Texas Tech
12. Notre Dame

Good luck gettin through that undefeated.

Now let's do Ohio State:

1. Florida
2. Ole'Miss
3. Oregon State
4. Oklahoma
5. Miami
6. Maryland
7. Arizona
8. Wisconsin
9. Missouri
10.West Virginia
11. Louisville
12. Michigan

How cool would this be?!!!!!!!!

Think of a few of your own!

Good plan.. Ohio State is in trouble in week 6.

Seriously though, how does USC play Ohio State in week 1 but Ohio State plays Florida in week 1?

That would be way too random. The conf basicly says you are better than the 10 teams in ur conf. Then u play a team from another conf that is also better than the rest of their conf. Thus, the winner between them would be considered better then EVERYONE.

This random games all over wouldn't mean anything at the end.

Not to mention it would kill long standing rivalries and rivalries make college football what it is...

and the reality of it is that the conferences make a fortune and have way too much power to ever let something like this happen.

NOT a bad idea, but here's a few reasons why not ,...

(1) Because losing the regionality of the current setup would mean big losses in revenue. The proposal would require a 6 home and 6 away schedule. "I ain't paying to go out West twice a year when I can drive to every Big Ten game there is in 6-8 hours."

(2) Some traditions would die,...no, they would be murdered. Alabama/Auburn, Florida/Georgia, USC/UCLA, Indiana/Purdue,...I won't mention the obvious.

(3) Who plays in the title game ?? You think it's bad now when only 2/3 teams are undefeated,...what happens when you have 5/6 that are 7-4 ??

Not bustin' your chops 'Mun,...we definitely need to get out-of-the-box,....

Here's some of my idea(s)

Nobody plays a 1-AA opponent; but if you do, the win also counts as a loss.
You schedule everybody in your conference before you play anybody else thereoutof.
Every conference either does, or doesn't, play a title game.
If you're Top Ten the year before, you cannot schedule a team (out of conference) below twice that,...so if you're Vanderbilt at 14, you cannot schedule (ooc) below 28,....likewise, if you are the National Champ, you must play #2 again next year,...
And we definitely need at least, a four-deep playoff.

And, if it's this big a deal, start paying the kids -- with money provided by the NFL.

These are two examples, not necasarilly during the same season.

Mind you, the rivalries will remain. Notice USC still plays Notre Dame during week 12, and Ohio State plays Michigan.

Yeah but there are conferences for a reason my friend. But you predicted a great explaination to playing year in and year out.

Naaa....too much travel in the heart of the season when these guys are in class(in theory)

Most of those long travel hauls are done early in the season before real class time kicks in....and more important, the rivalries that are natural are killed.

We have what I call 4 pretty intense rivalries we are going to play every year. As a ticket holder and 25 year donor...I am not going to be satisfied not playing Georgia every year, Fla State every year,Tennessee every year, and LSU every year....now that Suprrier is at SC, you can toss them in to the mix as well.

You aren't going to have a good team all the time, but you still have the rivalry.

Just change the BCS in to some sort of playoff...even if it is a 4 team championship series....2 semi's on New Years and a Championship after that.

That still might not be perfect, but it would only add 1 extra game(the championship) for two teams, and it wouldn't wreck the bowl system everybody seems to cherish.

Four teams isn't great, but you can usually weed down to 3 teams in any year where there is uproar over someone getting left out...the only debate would be between who is 4 and who is 5...I think that would be a bit easier to discern......or that may even be to the point people wouldn't care so much except the fans of the school left out.

The plus one system would work out pretty well...seems to be the best balance to satisfy all concerns.

I like college football, so I will say a bit more...

I could see more super conferences....I would like to see the SEC expand by 4....2 per division...I think Clemson and North Carolina in the east, and Texas and Texas A&M in the west.

The Big 10 should even the slate from 11 and go to 14 teams....add W Virginia, Notre Dame, and Missouri, then split in to east and west division like the SEC.

Form another conference of the ACC and the Big East left overs, and take BYU and who knows who else....maybe Memphis in to the Big 12..

Maryland probably gets left out.

Naa...there are a lot of schools that are ready to make a jump...App St is ready....there are others....Fla Atlantic is moving up...South Fla, UAB...there are a lot of ways to keep things alive.

Conf USA and the MAC are fairly spread out....you could use those who didn't get swallowed by another conference to fill in, in to a combined conference of teams

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

that wouldn't work, but what i would do, is leave the conference schedules alone, and let the ncaa handle the out of conference schedule, do away with a top 5 team playing nobody state, and instead have a random draw of big conference teams playing other big conference teams

for maybe 2 out of 3 of your out of conference games, and the other game would be a random draw from one of the smaller conferences like the mac or the wac or the mountain west...

That benefits the SEC and Big 12. That schedule is easier than an SEC schedule right now.

That would be OK, except in today's "state" the penalty is so stiff, i.e. you play USC, get thumped, and don't have another shot. Not whining, it is what it is.

I don't know if I'd go that far. We'll see how this all shakes out after the bowl season. If Florida, Georgia, LSU, and Alabama all win their bowl vs. non conference opponents, then I'll agree with you.

That really has to happen.

I know you aren't up there any more, so you know by the Big 10 not having that component, it sort of reeks of rinky dink in the eyes of many around the country.

At least add W.V, Notre Dame, or Missouri....

Well maybe not ND...that might make it more rinky dink.....but as one poster told me....ND has a new weight room.

The other thing is 'Dawg, and this goes outside of conference rankings, this year's Florida team has what it takes to be considered the greatest college football team ever. - You know it pains me to write that. Florida has everything. It will take a miracle for any SEC team to beat them.

Are you trying to jinx me or just sucking up??

Our O is mature....on D we don't have a starting senior...It isn't going to be that easy as much as I would like to buy what you are selling.

I appreciate the words, but it isn't as slam dunk as you think....LSU,Georgia, and a few others are going to take exception to your feelings.

'Peen, don't take this the wrong way, this is gonna seem harsh. I'm not a fan of Florida, therefore, I couldn't jinx you guys. Believe me, I rooted against you guys when you played Miami. I didn't want you to beat Tennesee because Tennesee lost to UCLA- Would have mad the SEC look bad.
I cannot stand the SEC and the notion that they are the best conference. I root against any SEC team whenever they play against teams from any other conference. If two SEC teams play against each other, I root for the SEC team that has already lost to a non-conference opponent. - I hate the SEC. I hate Florida. I hate everything that you enjoy about the SEC.

I don't hate you though.

In spite of my obvious hatred toward Florida and the SEC, I cannot deny what is plain as day. Florida is the best coached team in the country. Like I said, Urban Meyer, and his players, are greased lightning. Their play book is innovative, wild, and organized all in one, - and everybody within that organization knows what they are supposed to do per that playbook. -It's amazing. On top of all that, they have the top special teams. I would be amazed if they lost to anybody this year.
