Just curious if anyone else has looked into this. I know the end of the world has been predicted for a long time...but jeez...  ...these were the Mayans...anywho, makes for some interesting reading and something to scare your co-workers with. Didn't the Mayans also predict that the world would run out of oil in 1990? Well, here it is, 2008, and I'm still putting gas in my car. (Albiet at $3.40 a gallon)

The Mayans never predicted the end of the world in 2012. That's just when their calendar ended. Probably because that's as far as they got before they were killed off. Wonder if they predicted that one?

Not that I know a lot about it, but in fact the Mayans did 'predict' their own end. Essentially their calendar is a cycle of time, or 'ages' (or stages) of the human environment on Earth. The day the spainards landed and met with mayans is on the calendar as an 'end' of one of those cycles.
December 21, 2012 is the end of the last age they documented. The calendar has never been fully understood, and nowhere does it state the end of time/existence, merely the end of our current understanding of things. It could be looked upon as a new dawning of a better (hopefully) way of life. Or it can be taken as doom and gloom. Which sells more books or is more sensational. 
An interesting little tid-bit is that on that date is that our solar system is supposed to pass through the 'galactic plane' in or around that day. Meaning that our sun and planets will pass up from the south to the north (I think) of our galaxy's 'axis point', where the center of our galaxy rotates. I doubt that it will have any adverse effect given the distances involved. However some speculate on some gravitational calamity; much like they did on May 5th, 2005 (or 5/5/05) where they said planetary alignment would hurl Earth out of its orbit and out into space (see how that went).
It does seem like I might know more than I led on, college wasn't all about beer, girls, and parties (mostly but not all).  Some of this I got from the history and discovery channels on mayan civilization and the 2012 show on one of them.
Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital.

The mayans made predictions about the 20th century oil economy....that's either an odd joke, or one of the most ridiculously wrong things i've ever heard.

Good thing the date is December 21st and not some time in January.....with the Browns luck, the end of the world would probably come 5 minutes before kickoff when they play in the Superbowl.

Ironic that Dec 12, 2012 is roughly 1 month after our next Presidential election, maybe it will be the end of our current government and the beginning of a smaller, more honest, hard working government for the people? One can hope right?

these threads are like the cheerleader threads, clockwork. We are good for at least 2 a year anywho, 2 astronomical tidbits for that date the earth completes one precession, or wobble, around it axis, I believe that takes place every 26,000 years. our solar sytem crossing the galactic plane, I believe this happens every 400,00 years or so.

This is the one that has some people worried as there are some theories that this is the event that will trigger the flip in the Earth's magnetic poles, which will, in theory, blink out life on this planet.

They've been in the process of flipping for about 50 years. There are places in the world where compasses point all sorts of directions. When I get back from work I'll try to find the article.
Anywho, the reversal is nothing to worry about, It's happened numerous times in the past. I actually think we're overdue. They said the worst thing that would happen is a higher rate of cancers while the shield is weak. (it never really disappears)

I think that's the cause for the Bermuda and Dragon Triangles, which just happen to be on opposite polar sides, same lattitude. Perhaps they used to be the North and South? Hmmm?

However, because the sun works the same way on all sides, this has no effect on how we experience life on earth.
In a historical note, despite the very small effect of GR on the orbital precession of the earth. This effect formed the first experimental evidence that General Relativity was correct, as Einstein showed that GR could account for the "error" in the observed orbit of Mercury as opposed to theoretical models of its precession.

In other words, the alignment of our poles which is now like this \ will shift every 26000 years to be like this /. As it takes 26000 years to do this, we'll never really see the difference. We are currently in summer in the northern hemisphere when we are the farthest from the sun in our eliptical orbit. In 26000 years, we will be in winter when farthest. This is assuming our orbit stays constant.

that's the equinox precession part that i mentioned at the beginning, i don't recall the period of that, but it's pretty long.
The orbital precession part starts with an orbit (around the sun, not around the earth's axis), that looks like this (ignore the periods, they're for formatting):

That would be 1/4 of the change (it takes 25000 years to go all the way back to it's initial position), so it will switch like that every ~6000 years. (only a small part of the effect is due to General Relativity, most is due to effects from the equinox precession, and from the gravitational pull of jupiter on the earth)

So whats the consenses? Is this ligit? I'd hate to have my 2012 Xmas shopping be for naught but if i show up Dec 25 empty handed I'll wish it was the end of the world

Dependng upon civilization good or bad will happen on this date. The link is very long, but it explains exactly how the calender was created and scientificully why their calender is amazing. The Mayans were far more advanced than other races for their time, and even more advanced in understanding of space up until the 19 century.
