I am looking to invest in a PS3 pretty soon and have a couple of questions. I have read a bunch of articles and reports about the new 80gb for $399 and how it is not as flexible as the first few versions. Basically what I need to know is do the new ones play old PS2 games or not? Is it worth it to search Ebay for an older version and pay the extra $100, or do the new ones pretty much have all the bells and whistles of the first versions?
Like I said, I have been reading about it online, but no one seems to know for sure if it is backwards compatible or not. i was hoping someone here could tell me from first hand experience.

I don't know the answer to your question honestly.
But, I hardly ever play PS2 games on the thing. Like...never.

I think the last 80 that was backwards was the MGS bundle that just came out this summer. Not sure about that though.
I'm like Ammo, I've yet to play any of my PS2 games on my PS3. I've gotten a couple new ones and I'm just playing them. I wish Monster Rancher would come out for the PS3 though.

Do either of you have the new 80gb? If you do, would you mind trying to play a PS2 game just to let me know? I can't imagine having those great GTA games go to waste!

From the graph on the wikipedia page, it looks like the newest 80 GB version is not backwards compatible...

I just got invited to the Home Beta and I love it. Last night they unveiled a new game area for Uncharted called "Sully's Bar". It has some pictures of the game and some artifacts to look and they also have a mini arcade game that I didn't get to play because all three units were being hogged last night.
They took out the Video and Music sharing because of legal issues so that was a downer but all in all I see a lot of potential.
The PS store is good I can't wait to get the Qore edition tonight because there is a demo for an upcoming RPG that I want to check out.
They still have some work to do but it's coming around nicely.

The new 80gb sku does not have PS2 B/C. Sony has abandond B/C due to costs. They are still the most expensive unit out there.
Majority of the cost is the Blu-ray player but for people who only play games that don't matter.
Look for a price cut soon IMO. They need to compete this holiday season with games like God of War 3 and Ressistance 2 comming out a price cut would help get more buys.

Yes, what Free said ... the new version of 80GB is NOT backwards compatiable. The MGS4 release earlier this summer was the last version to have full capabilities. (Thank gawd I got pretty much the last one in stock anywhere!) They took out the PS2 compatability to reduce price. They figure most PS3 gamers just play the new games anyway, and they were adding an extra $100 worth of hardware for something only 10% of buyers were really using. I think the cost is WELL worth what you get though. You're getting a blue-ray player, and DVD-upscaler and a top of the line next-gen console system ... pretty much for the cost of a single blue-ray system. The MGS4 release this year was an absolute steal. You got all that, PLUS a PS2 compatable system, PLUS a $60 game and $20 strategy guide.

Yeah, I wish I would have gotten one of those MGS4 systems when I had the chance. I want to be able to still play my GTA games every once in a while which is why I wanted a backwards compatible system.
I guess I will just have to keep my PS2 as well.
Thanks to everyone for the assistance. If you know of anyone getting rid of an 80gb B/C system, please let me know!!

I was going to get rid of it if I could get a PS3 that played my old PS2 games. I can't not play the old Grand Theft Auto games every once in a while though, so the PS2 stays!

You can buy a 6ft HDMI cable on Ebay for ~$10 including shipping. Because it's a digital signal it will work just as well as the $120 6ft Monster HDMI cable.
I've been using one for over a year now, picture looks great and I don't have any problems. I bought the generic $50 BestBuy before I knew about the Ebay ones and I will bet any money no one will be able to tell the difference.

Do you have it connected through an HDMI cable or just the regular video in and out cables.
HDMI cable makes a HUGE difference.

I am debating on what game to get.
Resistance 2, COD4, or the COD? Or if anyone has any other suggestions.
Any suggestions from the PS3 owners?
Im not really into the single player modes, I dont have the patience, so Im looking for a good online mode and great visuals.

Man get Socom....the visuals are pretty good (not as good as COD4) but the game play is the best. If you get the game only it's only $40 as well.

I was thinking about it, but saw the review on gamespot wasnt as good as COD or as Resistance seemd like it was going to be. Maybe Ill rent it first.
What do you mean the "game only" is $40? Whats the other option?

The bundle version comes with a Bluetooth headseat and it's priced at $60.
Or you can buy the disc only version or download the full game from the PS Store for $40.
Socom and COD are two different games. COD is a first person shooter and for the most part is a run & gun respawn.
Socom is a 3rd person tactical/strategy shooter. You can have a respawn room but it won't be ranked. COD is a good game I played it many times but it got old for me and I stopped playing pretty much when GTA IV game out in April. I probably only played less than 5 times since then.
Socom also just came out and they have some server issues that will be worked out. Warhawk had the same issues and a month later they were fixed. Socom will also have better support. They are going to have more map packs released on a regular basis. The in-game clan support and ladder also blows COD's prestige ranking system away. COD has no in game clan ladder at all.
Socom will have ranking on Socom.com much like Bungie does with Halo. In-game Single Ladders, 4v4 Ladders, 8v8 ladders and 16v16 ladders. Also they will have Sony Sponcered Tournements.
IMO
Visuals COD > Socom
Gameplay Socom > COD
Rent it and I'll play with you. It's not for everyone so maybe it will be better off that you rent it first.

Ill probably rent it, to be honest Im pretty terrible at those games, but I like playing them, Thats why I liked Halo, it was pretty simple for me. I typically only play sports games.

I think that Gamespot report was pretty low. They gave the reasons for giving it a bad score was issues with the server and stats not recording right. That will all eventually be fixed.
It may not have the high-end graphics of some others, but that's not what SOCOM is about. SOCOM has always been about the gameplay and the clan/ranking system.

I'm surprised by that. I was under the impression that 360 graphics and PS3 graphics were very comparable. Some say the PS3 is better.

I mean they were comparable, but 360 was clearly better. For that game at least. I tried Madden and they were about the same, if not maybe a slight edge to the PS3.
COD4 looks sick on the PS3 though, I cant imagine it looking much better anywhere else.
Still like XBL MUCH better than the PSN. Im interested to check "Home" though when its released.

It depends on the game. When the PS3 first came out and throughout the first year Multiplatform games were made on the 360 and a lot of companies had trouble taking the 360 code and porting it to the PS3.
To be able to make the game run equall to the 360 version would have required a lot of them to start from scratch on the game. This would of cost a lot and the PS3 has such a small user base they decided not to and optimized the game as best as they could and sometimes that meant the graphics weren't as polished and the game was a little more sluggish.
The main difference between the two systems is the 360 has 512 of shared RAM and the PS3 has 256mb of RAM for the processer and 256mb of RAM for the game, they can't share it.
So at times on the 360 they can take a more that 256mb of RAM for the game if they need to, this helps with loading high level graphics.
The PS3 has the cell processer and they use SPE's to do the work loads for them. If you build the ground up you can us the 256mb of RAM effectivly to load and unload of the stack quicker and you can effectivly achieve the same level of graphics on the PS3 that you can do on the 360.
Both systems have equal quality graphics cards so if both are optimized right they will have equal quality.
But as with all multi platform games why make two games when you can make one. If they cut corners on the PS3 version or the 360 version they will. You see this a lot with EA.

Yeah, I mean, everything Ive played since NBA2K9 has looked great, no issues at all, really no difference, it was just the first game I got to compare and I was like uggghh, but since then everything has looked great.
Do you know when Home will be out? Or at least the open beta?

IDK, I'm in the closed Beta. Not much content in there right now and they took out the music and video sharing.
