The NFL trading deadline is 4 p.m. Oct. 14 and trade rumors are starting to run rampant throughout the league and the Cincinnati Bengals appear to be headliners.
Rumor has it that the San Francisco 49ers could have interest in acquiring Bengals WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
According to a source, Houshmandzadeh’s name has come up quite frequently during conversation at Niners headquarters in recent weeks. Apparently, 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz is enamored with Houshmandzadeh and may have learned some positive things about the receiver from a member of the Zampese family who Martz remains close to.
The 49ers are looking to upgrade the receiver position opposite veteran Isaac Bruce and are expected to do so by the trading deadline. The acquisition of Houshmandzadeh would provide the team with more firepower in the passing game.
According to the source, the Niners organization is also expected to make contact with the Detroit Lions regarding the availability of receiver Roy Williams, who has been the subject of trade talk for months.
Houshmandzadeh’s agent Kennard McGuire did not return a phone call seeking comment.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I don't see the Bengals letting him go without some HUGE compensation coming their way.

If the Bengals get rid of TJ for only a 2nd round pick, then that organization is more screwed up than I give it credit for.
I can't believe they're going to want to stick with Ocho Cinco after this year, even though he's been quiet since they told him if he behaves, they'll talk after this season about money. But you just know that guy is going to melt down or be up to his trashing antics in the offseason again.
And Chris Henry as your potential no. 1 receiver? The guy has talent, but he's a time bomb.
I only see them trading for someone proven, someone with a ton of potential, or a buttload of draft picks.

This might just be the big break that Ocho Stinko has been whining for for awhile. Push the Hanging Chad and keep TJ. He is better than the Spectacle any given Sunday IMO

You have got to be kidding me. They want to trade one of the very few good players without character issues? Why dont they trade CJ? This franchise is a joke. Theyll probabally try to trade Carson next.

Their season is done...and he ain't going to be a Bengal next year when his FA year hits. It might happen except we are dealing with the Brown kids here (sorry Paul the acorn rolled down the hill and disappeared ) they will ask for 2 first round picks and be serious about it. He won't get dealt and they will get nothing but maybe a compensatory pick if they don't sign any FA's of their own.
My question is what are the Lions doing trying to deal Roy Williams.
Man we should pick him up...or look into it...guess his contract is up and they aren't going to go after him???

If he has told the team that he will not re-sign with them under any circumstances, they might be inclined to trade him. After all, they are going nowhere this year ..... and holding onto an asset for the remainder of a lost year only to get nothing in return is pointless.
Of course .... as you point out, this is the Bengals we are talking about.

I don't think he's told them he doesn't want to be on the team...I think he (his agent) has told them what he was going to be looking for and probably will get in the FA market and they KNOW They aren't going to pay that amount...after all TJ hasn't been to jail yet...lol
The Brown family and Al Davis should get together and make a real franchise

Truth be told, my first post (which I deleted) said exactly the same thing. I only bumped it because I didn't want to see all the "Phil has dealt away ALL our picks!" posts.
But, since you've opened the door... I agree. I'd trade Stallworth for him faster than I'd trade Joan Rivers for Heidi Klum .
Good routes. Good hands. NO off-field issues. Steady production.
Like I said in the previous one... who wouldn't want him?
Pull that trigger, Phil.... draft pick junkies be damned!!!

They are in full blown panic/rebuild mode. Plus to my knowledge he is a FA at the end of the year, so mine as well try to get something instead of losing him and getting nothing. I may be wrong on the FA thing, but I remember when he was hosting a show on NFL Network he said his agent would talk contract after the season.
I agree with everyone else in why him? The only thing I can think is most teams outside of Dallas wanna take on a player like Ocho Stinko.

He must have made it clear that he has no interest in resigning with Cincy. That's the only possible reason I can see for them to consider doing this. If that is the case, well, they're sitting at 0-5; might as well get something positive for the future.

Bengals press conference: Q: Can you comment on the rumors that the 49ers are interested in trading for T.J. Houshmandzadeh? Marvin Lewis: Boy, that's a bad rumor, huh? I mean, let's just talk about it a little bit. No. 1, you're going to get a club in trouble for tampering, and that club has already been penalized once this year, very harshly. No. 2, what club in its right mind would trade for a player that's going to be an unrestricted free agent? Again, if you're going to start a rumor, make it a good one. Make it something that makes some sense to people inside the NFL. You know? It's unfortunate. web page

How would the 49ers showing interest be considered tampering? Especially if they are talking with the Bungles about a trade.
Now if they are actively negotiating with TJ without talking to the 'Gals then that would be a problem. But I doubt that they'd be quite that stupid.
And how many times do you hear a GM, manager, player deny something and then see it come true 2-3 days later?

TJ has been there most reliable receiver for several years. Personally I think he is better than Ocho.

U play bad poker Lewis..very bad..trading deadline is approaching so it's not tampering showing interests and having discussions with your quasi-GM.. And if they can resign him or structure his contract immediately it's a moot point for them.. The REAL question is ..if you get what you want for him what will U guys do with the picks..take more lunatics???

It's been well known and talked about down this way that T.J. has no intention of sigining again with the Bengals, and even if he wanted to, Mike Brown has no intention of paying him what he will be asking. They are simply trying to get something for what will be nothing.

Thought this could go here: Handful of Lions considered trade bait By Jason Cole, Yahoo! Sports Oct 8, 12:36 pm EDT Though in-season NFL trades are a rarity, four team executives talked to Yahoo! Sports about players they believe should be dealt prior to the deadline next Tuesday. The executives agreed that the only teams that should really be cleaning house at this point are the Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions and St. Louis Rams. Even though the Houston Texans are 0-4, many observes believe they will rebound and play well. Furthermore, the Texans don’t have many players who should just be dumped, aside from running back Ahman Green. “And I would only take Green if I was truly desperate,” one of the executive said. “Thank God I’m not in that situation.” Here’s a list of the top 10 players who should be dealt. 1. RB Larry Johnson, Kansas City Chiefs Comment: “By the time the Chiefs are good again, he’s going to be done. … I don’t understand why they gave him all the money and then they wouldn’t sign Jared Allen. If you’re rebuilding, you don’t do it with a running back who’s going to be burned.” Another executive said Johnson has a reputation around the league as being a “spoiled brat” and “not much of a leader.” Best potential fits: He’s not a perfect fit in Philadelphia because of the style of the offense, but all of the executives said the Eagles could use him now that Brian Westbrook has broken ribs. Other teams that could use him would be the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints. 2. DE Dewayne White Detroit Comment: “He isn’t a great player, but he’s a good one and he can help any rotation. Plus, you can move him inside from time to time. He probably won’t get more than five or six sacks, but that’s worth it if you’re the right team.” Said another exec: “Try finding a pass rusher at this point of the year.” Best potential fits: Just about any team except the New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars. 3. WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Bengals Comment: “He’s going to be a free agent. He’s going to get paid. The Bengals won’t pay him, which is a joke because he’s one of the few guys on that team you could even begin to call a leader.” Said another executive: “He’d be perfect in Indianapolis, but it won’t happen.” Best potential fits: Bucs, Jags, Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills. 4. CB Patrick Surtain, Chiefs Comment: “He’s hurt (shoulder injury) and he has declined, but it’s the same thing as pass rushers; you need cover guys. You can’t get enough of them.” Best potential fits: Saints, Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers and Baltimore Ravens. 5. CB Brian Kelly, Lions Comment: “Same as with Surtain, although Kelly has declined more and he has problems in straight man coverage … not a great player anymore, but they’ll get more for him than he’s really worth.” Best potential fits: Cardinals, Packers, Saints and Ravens. 6. WR Roy Williams, Lions Comment: “I think he’ll play harder for some other team.” Best potential fits: Jags, Bucs, Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings. 7. DT Cory Redding, Lions Comment: “If I’m the Lions, I clean house starting now. I don’t even wait for a new GM. This guy played hard for a contract and hasn’t done anything since. Again, I think it’s more about Detroit than the player, so I’d take a chance … if he’s motivated, he can rush the passer from the inside.” Best potential fits: Colts, Eagles, Redskins and Broncos. Will the Bengals part ways with Johnson, right, or Houshmandzadeh? (AP Photo/Bill Kostroun) 8. TE Tony Gonzalez, Chiefs Comment: “He’s a good guy in the locker room and he takes care of himself. Between the leadership and the fact that he might still be really good in two to three years, it would take a lot for me to deal him and I don’t think anybody is going to offer that much.” Best potential fits: Jags, Bucs, Vikings and Titans. 9. WR Chad Johnson, Bengals Comment: “I’m amazed how quiet he has been. Maybe that injury is worse than we thought. You know he wants out and he’s the most gifted receiver in the league. But the injury is an issue.” Best potential fits: Pats, Cowboys, Vikings, Titans and Jags. 10. DE Antwan Odom, Texans Comment: “They just signed him as a free agent (in the offseason), so I don’t think he’ll be available. But I think they realize he’s overrated. He’s purely a complementary player.” Best potential fits: Pats, Jags and Colts. linky

I'd like to see us get him but there's not chance of that ever happening. Whosyourmama is as good a #2 receiver as I've seen. He's tough, takes what he can get, and shows up every game. He'd go a long way towards fixing what ails our offense since Joe J. is winding down his career and Stallworth is a bust.
The Bengals are smart (can't believe I said that) in trying to deal him now. They won't get a dime once he makes it to FA and I don't see him making much of an effort to stay in Cincy. They should also try to deal off CJ while they can. Of course doing this mid-season is conceding defeat and might not go over to well with the fans.

I'd give up a 5th right now for Surtain. Cory Redding is an interesting thought as well, so is Roy Williams... not sure what I'd really give up to get those guys though, I think it may be too rich for our blood. 3rd or a 4th? Absolutely. 2nd? Maybe, tough call. 1st rounder? No way.

For those who don't understand the potential tampering part....... Quote:
According to a source, Houshmandzadeh’s name has come up quite frequently during conversation at Niners headquarters in recent weeks. Apparently, 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Martz is enamored with Houshmandzadeh and may have learned some positive things about the receiver from a member of the Zampese family who Martz remains close to.
The QBs coach of the Bengals is Ken Zampese.....son of Ernie........49ers OC Martz worked with Ernie in the past.....
The term tampering, as used within the National Football League, refers to any interference by a member club with the employer-employee relationship of another club or any attempt by a club to impermissably induce a person to seek employment with that club or with the NFL. (pulled from startribune.com)
It very well could be tampering.

I've always thought that Yahoo! Sports is one of the lowest of the low in terms of the articles that it writes, and this just further corroborates that. Quote:

If all they are doing is gathering info just how is that tampering? Sorry, I don't see how tampering can be inferred from what I've seen posted here.
As I said before if they're talking to TJ behind the scenes that's one thing. But if they're talking to other people about him, gathering info, I don't see that as anything other than due diligence.
