I think the title and tone of the article are crafted to create a stir, cause an uproar.... to be inflammatory.
Reading what people in the case actually had to say, there is no indication that any of the top punishements will be awarded. If they are, it sounds to me as if it will be either in a "Make an example" type scenario or as an attempt at scaring the bejeezus out of her and her classmates so that hopefully they can start to curb this.... though I doubt it will work; teens are stupid... they were when I was one (self included) and I KNOW that hasn't changed.

I imagine the people in her phone book were people she was friends with, so I think its safe to speculate that she texted this picture to her friends. With that said, I think this is harsh and a complete abuse of the law.

if she only texted her friends (people in her phonebook) i dont understand what the deal is. she's a minor, they are minors. like someone else said, a huge dose of common sense hsould be used here.

Labeling her as a sexual offender is a damn joke. She sent the picture of herself,,not someone else. However, since she was 15 and sent it she should ge punished no matter who the recipients were. If I was in her school and that age I would have loved to get a text from her hehe.

The issue with this is› she forwards it to others, who forward it to others, who place it on the internet. Then not only do you have nude pics of a minor on people's phones, it's not on the internet. And the pedophiles are loving it.
It's a legal issue as well as a parenting issue.

Well it is High School.. stuff like that starts getting tossed around in the wind and eventually everyone knows and starts talking about it.. next thing you know is a couple of students start talking about it and some teacher overhears the conversation.
Stupid kids should have just kept their mouths shut and they would have probably got more juicier photos..

OK she takes a picture of herself naked and sends it to friends and it's a crime. But if she strips naked in front of those same friends it's not a crime

I think the sexual predator laws are too broad. They aren't just for rapist and child molesters. It is a stain on your life that follows you everywhere and circumstances need to be carefully considered.
Depending on who she sent these to should be considered in any punishment. Obviously you just can't make up new laws, but maybe the law needs to be rewritten. If she is sending these to anyone who is an adult according to the law, she should be punished in my book. If for some reason an adult (as young as 18) would be caught with these pictures he or she would be prosocuted. Sure the right thing to do would be to just erase them, but if they were unsolicited it would be wrong to charge that person.
If I were her dad, she would never be able to leave the house until she was 18. If I found some 40 year old with these pics, I would want him dead. Hypocracy at it's finest? You bet!

Are the charges trumped up and excessive? Possibly. I honestly don't think this is something to ruin a young girls life over by making her a registered sex offender if it's a couple of simple nudies... but she needs to pay some kind of price to know how wrong it is to do what she did.
and I have every right to judge children even when they make the same stupid mistakes I made as a kid.. that is part of the maturation process.

It still makes ZERO sense to me how they can charge her with anything, when she could have stripped naked in her own house in front of her friends, and she wouldn't have been charged with anything. But taking a picture of herself and texting it to her friends is being considered even worse

Our societies conventions and beliefs on nudity are no more backwards than the burkas enforced in the middle east. Nudity should be entirely optional. If this child is sent to detention I hope her community will have the courage to defend her.

Yes. At what point do humans possess their own authority and the ability to make their own decisions? I would say from a very young age you have the right to make any decision you want and you should be willing to accept the consequences for your decision. However, the consequences shouldn't be determined by some high and mighty authority figure trying to control everyone and everything.
