Maybe one of my fellow poster have had this issue with their dog before but this is sort of strange and we might end up taking him to the vet tomorrow if he isn't better, but this morning when the wife and I got up our dog sneezed and next think you know started whimpering and stuff, sorta like when he moves his head he's feeling pain, like he pulled a muscle or something. Nothing is noticeably wrong but all day today when he moves his head the wrong way he whimpers some. Now if this progresses we'll take him to the vet but am not sure what they can do, but I have had dogs who have pulled muscles in their legs, but never this region. He is not tender to touch and I have checked him out, did some internet research and still can't find a solid explanation, is my assuming that it is a pulled muscle a reach? I have never seen this before and am just wondering if anyone has seen or been in a similar situation. Thanks.

Just my personal opinion but I have worked as a dog trainer/handler/breeder and you probably should just wait a day or two before you go to a vet. Unless you are loaded and dont care about wasting $80 for a office visit.

Well you did win all that cash off of the Bucks losing, so hell with it go to the vet

Money isn't an issue, though I have a feeling that if I did take him to the vet that they wouldn't be able to do much, because that is what they think, but anyways I called our vet and they called back and pretty much think it is some sort of muscle pull, and just mentioned that we pay attention to what comes out of his nose, if it's blood or really mucus filled it may be a virus bring him in.

We rescued this dog and he had a rough life, he's about 8 and has noticeable signs of prior physical abuse, as well as some arthritis. The wife is a bit nervous but I think he'll be fine, but watching him yelp when he moves his head is heartbreaking because this isn't just a dog to us, he is our "son."

Have you giving him anything such as asprin for the pain?
or a warm bath? that may ease some of it.

If you really think it is just a muscle thing, perhaps ask the vet about giving him a little benadryl to help make him drowsy to keep his activity down for a day or two.

They actually mentioned baby asprin, but the one good thing is that he's a version of a Siberian husky lap dog, I have seen him lay in bed till we get up in the morning , go out and do his business, and go back to bed from 7am till 5pm, basically he's lazy already so his activity level is low to begin with, but the baby asprin is what we are going to attempt, but like the vet said give it a couple days and see how he progresses, just a wait and see issue right now.

The bath won't work, it would aggravate more then help, he isn't fond of baths, and moves around too much, but the baby aspirin route is the way we went, hopefully in about a hour or so we will know more.

Sometimes it's an ear issue when it hurts to turn your head, as well. Good luck with the doggie, Fletch. I know it's hard to watch them hurt. Also do some reading on giving dogs aspirin before you do so.

I hear ya and appreciate it! Thanks!

It is weird, and you can see he isn't feeling good, but hope the aspirin helps dull the pain.

I checked his ears and I don't think that's it, and they don't either obviously going by what I told them. I know about aspirin w/dogs, and do not want to do it on a regular basis, and would never give him too much, but he has already taken a half a baby aspirin, so hopefully that helps comfort him a bit.

Hope so. Any idea how he could have pulled a muscle (in case it wasn't from the sneeze)? Do the dogs play fight and wrestle?

Anything else? Could he have been stung by a bee?

They play but not this morning. He was fine until he sneezed and then whined. You could see he didn't want to move his neck though, like I mentioned no tender spots, his ears look fine, and it only seems to be happening with a sudden movement. It is weird, it's like you wish they could talk and tell you whats up.

I got a vet appt scheduled for Wednesday morning just in case he isn't better.

I wish they could talk when they hurt, too...otherwise, I want mine to stay silent. All I would hear is "I'm hungry", "walk me", "pet me".

Does he act like it hurts to turn his head the same as when people say "I slept wrong"? You know...you can't look sideways or over your shoulder without pain?

That's what it looks like to me, the slept on the head wrong and pulled a muscle in his neck. Other then that and sneeze I have no clue what he did, but he isn't a happy camper right now.

Well, if he'll let you, and you want to put the work in to this, you may be able to give him some relief. Do a few searches on "canine scm muscle", "massage", and "trigger point therapy". If he activated a "trigger point" in that muscle it could cause the sore neck when he turns his head. Same with people.

Anyway, once you get a good chart to show how the SCM muscle runs, understand what a trigger point is, and how to work them out of the muscle you may be able to help him feel a lot better. It's really not that hard in people, I teach them to work on those muscles themselves often...but I've never worked with dogs.

http://vanat.cvm.umn.edu/vanatCrsware/GrossAnat/MuscGrp.html

The SCM are the long muscles in the second group of drawings (forward facing dog) that run along either side of the throat -- from just behind the jawbones down to the sternum. They cause the pain in the BACK of the neck when people can't turn their heads -- should be the same for dogs.
