Wait, was that real? The ref took 2 steps toward the QB and lowered his shoulder. How was he not kicked out of the game?

Dang, I'm surprised I hadn't seen that yet.

Hey, the Terps are in trouble this weekend, they play NCState, who isn't very good... they can only beat teams when they are ranked, like Cal, Clemson and Wake Forest.. while they lose to Middle Tennessee and UVA...

Maybe it's me, all of the teams I like are tremendously consistent.

If it's real, surely they have it from a couple more angles right? I mean this was a televised game (not that it matters any more) they should have at least 3 or 4 more camera angles of this hit.... where are they?

And there is noticably little impact on the official who doesn't even get bumped backwards... either this official puts Hokuli to shame or that QB is a wuss...

Another good reason to link to the actual youtube video rather than to a blog entry with the youtube video embedded in it.

he collision between South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia and umpire Wilbur Hackett Jr. in Saturday's loss to LSU has drawn a lot of attention over the past two days, but Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier says Hackett did nothing wrong.

Hackett, a former linebacker at the University of Kentucky from 1967-70, ended up making contact with Garcia after the Gamecocks' QB rolled to his left and headed for the end zone in the second quarter. Hackett and Garcia collided at the 5-yard line as the LSU defense closed in.

"He was trying to get out of the way," Spurrier said of Hackett, according to The State in Columbia, S.C. "Stephen sort of cut back right into him. Sometimes that will happen."

When contacted by ESPN's Joe Schad, the Southeastern Conference office said after reviewing the play, it believes the umpire was in appropriate position. A spokesman said the umpire raised his arm to defend himself after a change of direction by the runner.

Garcia took over at the LSU 8 after a 46-yard interception return by Carlos Thomas. On first and goal, Garcia started running to his right before the hole on the line closed. He then rolled to his left and cut upfield, where he ran into Hackett.

Three plays later, Mike Davis scored on a 1-yard run to give South Carolina a 17-10 lead it would hold at halftime. LSU scored two second-half touchdowns for a 24-17 victory.

May be the ref called Wild Wings and asked if they wanted him to try and make the game last a little longer...........

Here's another angle in this video ... and it doesn't take long for these things to get spoofed.

Every time I see this video I see the exact same thing. I see a referee not getting out of the way. It looked like he square up and hit the guy. I don't agree at all with what the SEC said.

Neither do I. You can tell by the way he squares himself to the runner. You can also tell he played ball before. He wasn't cross stepping and was square when he leaned in and gave him the shoulder. Was a very clean hit and he should get a few calls from some teams. lol. could teach some linebackers how to roll.

spurrier can laugh about it because they scored on that drive. it wasn't going to affect the game so why not laugh.

if that had prevented a touchdown he would have taken it a bit more seriously. and yea the ref takes a step and delivers a blow. it's the same move hines ward uses every week away from the play.

you don't knock somebody on their ass like that trying to get away. the real question is why did he do that? wierd

I don't think he intentionally tried to hit the guy, it looks to me like he thought the runner was going to keep angling towards the sideline and he was trying to get behind the play but when the runner cut up field he knew he was going to get hit so he instictively reacted like he did in his old football›days and braced himself.

So why didn't he back up or go to his left either of those options would have accomplished what he was "trying" to do. I've never seen an official go towards a player like he did.

I think the ref thought the player was gonna keep angling towards the sideline so he (the ref) was trying to cut behind him and get behind the play so he was out of the way but when the player cut up the field he knew he was gonna get hit and so he reacted.

Makes me wonder what the call would've been had the QB fumbled upon being hit by the umpire. I'm sure Spurrier would be singing a different tune if that had happened.

I Think the Ref wanted to lay the wood to him, and was grinning ear to ear when he was done, and had to restrain himself from celebrating

Where do they put the ball if a ref calls a 15 yard taunting call on another ref?

It looks to me that the ref seeked him out and squared up on a player not thinking the ref would make contact. Get out the way of the play!!!!!
