Steeler Santonio Holmes Accused Of Marijuana Possession
Drugs Found During Traffic Stop
Thursday, October 23, 2008 – updated: 10:52 pm EDT October 23, 2008

PITTSBURGH -- Police cited Steelers receiver Santonio Holmes on charges of marijuana possession Thursday afternoon.

Pittsburgh police said Holmes was driving a SUV with out-of-state license plates near Mellon Arena. The vehicle matched the description of one linked to a crime, so officers made an investigatory stop.

“When they pulled him over, they found there was a smell of burnt marijuana in the vehicle," said Sgt. James Vogel. “Mr. Holmes was very cooperative with officers and turned over some items to us and was subsequently summoned for those items...a couple of marijuana blunts.”

Police said Holmes turned over three marijuana cigars. Officers charged Holmes with one misdemeanor count of possession of a small amount of marijuana. Holmes was given a summons to court and released.

Vogel said Holmes was very cooperative, respectful and wasn’t impaired. He thinks that should be taken into account when it comes to any potential action taken against him by the Steelers and the NFL.

“We wouldn't expect a steelworker to be laid off or suspended without pay,” said Vogel. “I wouldn't expect a police officer, firefighter or a member of the Steelers.”

The Steelers did not have any comment.

The NFL policy for substance abuse says for a first violation, the NFL could fine and suspend a player without pay for up to four regular games or six games for a second violation.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Obviously the cop is a Steeler fan, as he goes on record saying the NFL shouldn't suspend him, because other people wouldn't get suspended from their jobs.

Um, actually, yeah, I'd get into some trouble at work for that. Mr. Officer.

Whenever I read about stuff like this it makes me angry. Our governments policy towards weed and other drugs is beyond ridiculous. And folks who buy into the anti-drug propaganda are ridiculous also---it is sad.

Have you actually been to a country that allowed pot or other drugs to see the degradation of their society? There is no doubt that pot is a gateway to many other drugs and that the risk of addiction is extremely high.

It's actually his stupid self for having it in his car. He could have been in the privacy of his home and gotten away with it clean.

By the way, then you should blame the league which imposes it's strict anti-drug rules as well.

Ill give you the gateway, but risk of addiction high

Alcohol, tobacco and caffeine are probably 10x more addictive than weed. You cantbe physically addicted to weed, only mentally.

I used to use this logic all the time myself, and I see that 20+ years later it is still being batted about...

Granted it varies from drug to drug, but Mental Addiction can be far more devastating than any Physical Addiction.
A Physical Addiction, once you get past the short-term ill effects (i.e. DT's, etc..) is GONE. It is the Mental Addiction/Obsession that, if it isn't broken, will continually draw a person back.

the whole gateway theory is a crock if ya ask me. I believe its a coincidence. as a herion or coke addict if they ever smoked weed. well yes they smoked weed before, hell they are a herion addict. i bet they tried alcohol and xanax before too. so just because someone tries a certain drug (caffiene, beer, marijuana) does not mean that was the begining of a drug addiction. i mean if you would shoot a drug strait into your vein to get high, you probably think pot is for sissys.

all through school they told us crazy stuff about pot. you'll be sterile, men can grow boobs and other reffer madness propaganda. then someone tries it and thinks, "well if they lied about pot maybe cocain aint bad either" so if you believe in the gateway theory, blame that crap. Or blame alcohol it's probably more of a gateway since most people try that first. addiction is for uninformed or weak people. imo

untill the gov realizes they are going about the drug war the wrong way. its all a moot point. they spend soooooo much money trying to stop drug. putting people in jail for possession longer than molesters and other real criminals is a shame. to be a crime there has to be a victim. who is the victim by me smoking a joint? im not saying legalize drugs, ok maybe weed . but there has to be a better way, like treatment as a choice instead of jail for possession. treat dealers different because there is a vicum.

So when does my freedom to not have my taxes used for the treatment program kick in ?? There is always a victim if you look hard enough.

Now, I'm all for legalizing it,...AS LONG AS IT IS TAXED TO DEATH.

Weed and drugs are not the problem; as you pointed out, it's WHO And WHAT, and HOW to stop it. It's called common sense.

I say make it so possession is not against the law, but sale is. Therefore, you eliminate a lot of needless paperwork and tax money for putting Joe the pot smoker in jail because he had 1 joint on him.

I'm assuming from this statement that you've never had to deal with addiction in any form. And if that is the case, then you cannot speak to the various causes and circumstances that surround it.

Addiction is NOT just because you are weak. Addiction is NOT because you are uninformed. Addiction IS because you're body and/or mind has a attachment to the chemical reaction that takes place in your body.

This is the same regardless of the addiction. Whether it is gambling, alcohol, drugs, caffiene, nicotine, sky diving, scuba diving or whatever else you may be addicted to. You get to the point where you feel the NEED to have that. Some people can kick it fairly easy, some cannot. Some people replace one addiction for another. Go to any local coffee house and you'll probably see a number of recovering alcoholics. Possibly even AA groups set up or notices on the community board.

Most of us have an addiction to one thing or another. We may or may not acknowledge it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. You're proposal that addiction is only for the weak and/or uninformed is absolutely ludicrous to me and shows how little you know about the subject.

PPE

The problem with mental addiction is, it includes about everything. Food, chocolate, gambling, sex and the list goes on.

Are you suggesting we legislate everything that's mentaly addictive? Or just pick and choose?

No, I'm not suggesting anything of the sort, in fact, I haven't the slightest idea how in the heck you could even have gotten the notion that I wanted legislation of any sort because nowhere in my response did I mention legislation in any way, shape or form.

I'm simply pointing out the complete folly and ignorance in downplaying mental addiction and pretending as if it is nothing because it's not the supposedly big, bad Physical Addiction. The notion that you don't have to worry about it or that it is the lesser evil is completely erroneous. In plain terms, it's a complete and total crock.

Can you give me any facts that pot is any more dangerous than many legal substances such as tobacco or alcohol? I see you used the term "labeled".

Point being, you can label a hog as a steer, but it will still taste like bacon.

It was a general statement, not specifically about marijuana.

You were saying there's other addictions, like food and sex, not just drugs. I was merely making a point about the immediate dangers of drugs.

Exactly. It's not about what a few people think should be legal, it's about what is illegal under current law.

I hope this guy gets what's due him under the law of this country. Who cares if he's a football player. Then, I hope the nfl gives him a 4 game suspension.

People like to talk too much politics around here.

Holmes was deactivated for Sunday's game by Pittsburgh already. He could miss several games because of this, because that wasn't the NFL's ruling yet.

Correct, as it is still now. But the difference is that all those folks that get stopped and have 1 or 2 joints on them, won't clog up the system for something so minor.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Obviously the cop is a Steeler fan, as he goes on record saying the NFL shouldn't suspend him, because other people wouldn't get suspended from their jobs.

Um, actually, yeah, I'd get into some trouble at work for that. Mr. Officer.

That part of the story stuck out to me big time. If I was in the news for getting arrested with blunts in my car, as a factory worker, I would be drug tested at work and then fired if I failed. Which Holmes would obviosley fail if he was tested. It also wouldnt matter to my company if I cooperated with the police. Im not saying that its right, that I would be fired, but its the truth. How would the cop go on record by also saying that he wouldnt expect an officer of the law to get suspended or fired without pay? My guess is that he has the "Deliverance" themesong CD in his CD player. Although I do agree with the cops statement, Im not a cop. Its funny that an officer of the law thinks that he shouldnt be suspended or laid off without pay for breaking the law. It shows the lawmen actually see how harmless the drug is. But to this lawmen, I guess it matters who you are as to who should be or not be punished.

As far as the addiction part of the conversation. Marijuana was very easy for me to quit when I had a reason to. When I wasnt getting tested, I smoked all the time 'after work'. It relaxed me after a hard day of work, like many on here would have a couple of beers or drink a 6 packer after work.It never made me miss work or stop playing sports. But when I got a job that tested for it, with no tolerance for any use, I easily stopped.

As for the "gateway" drug topic. I would say that almost 100% of the people I know that have smoked pot, drank alcohol and/or used the drug tobbaco before they smoked weed. Does that make alcohol or tobacco a gateway drug? All it does, is show a persons willingness to try new things or to expand the mind.

What cracks me up, is the small minded people who drink, that say that weed "turns your brain into mush". Um NO. For one, it doesnt. For two, do they realize that drinking kills brain cells?

I think it would cost the taxpayers less to give drug offenders treatment over sending them to jail; housing with free electricity and running water; paying someone to babysit them with killers, thieves and rapist; and feeding them 3 times a day. It would also give the offender a chance to have a job and in return pay taxes himself. The cops, courts, and the jails wouldnt want you to think that. Because then thats less of the tax payers money that can go to them, to fight drugs in a war that can not be won .

That reminds me of one of my favorite "COPS" episode. A fella admits to a patrolman that he indeed does partake and admits he was going to smoke one later. The guy says something to the effect of, "yeah and that is the one I was going to smoke later"

Last week Holmes was busted in Pittsburgh for posession of weed. According to news reports on WDVE radio, and Pittsburgh newstalk 104.7, when stopped the officer asked him if he was smoking marijuana. Holmes said not at the time, but yesterday he was. He also show the officer where two "blunts" were in the car. He was charged with posession.

Now what I'm wondering about, is why he isn't being suspended by the league. Tomlin suspended him for the Giants game not the league. In the local paper today, he is quoted as saying it is behind him, and he will not discuss it anymore with the press. If he admitted to the police that he was smoking the day before, how could he possibly pass a drug test? Pot stays in your system for at least 28 days. Most testing companies are aware of masking chemicals and drinks, so it is hard to pass unless you cheat with someone elses urine. You would think he would be tested immediately by the league. I also believe that there is a law now that the police can give urine tests also for drug use, and the person can be charged with DUI.

I've read or heard nothing about the league fining him or working on a suspension. I know William Green was caught with pot and suspended, I'm just wondering if , or how Holmes is getting treated in this situation. The local paper downplayed it saying he had "a very small amount". But the report says at least two blunts.

Has anybody got any information about this? It is a little baffling to me. I have a friend who was picked up in Pittsburgh with less than a quarter ounce, probably enough for a couple "blunts". He lost his CDL license for a year along with his job.

The paper today said he was back with the team today. Something sounds not right to me.

You can read the whole article here.

No action has been taken against Holmes by the NFL and if there is any, it won’t be until the case has been finalized.

“In terms of what action the league will take it really depends on the outcome of the criminal case,” said Tomlin. “We’ll let that process run its course. From our standpoint we dealt with it sufficiently. That kind of outlines the steps we took and he took and we’ll move forward.
