This is a question out to all DawgTalkers. Savage pointed out more than a month ago that the Browns have reached their internally imposed spending limit for 2008. Yet they have around $8M of salary cap room available this year?

Does it bother you that that money is not being spent by the team? Do you think it would impact the performance of the Browns if we added players within the room that we have under the cap?

I'm conflicted but as a PSL owner and a Season ticket holder I feel a bit cheated that we aren't doing everything in our power to improve the team because of money.

I'm all about spending and making the team better, but if there aren't any players that would make the team better, than what's the point? Spend the money wisely.

$8 million under doesn't bother me at all. It's a good safety net, IMO, in case of injury or some other issue.

I agree.

And....I take it the limit was reached not so much from a total dollars standpoint but from a bonus money standpoint.

To me it is more of a cash flow situation v a cap situation. The way the contracts were structured this year, we spent the available cash to dole out.

Other years, we can probably bump right up to the league limit yet be under Lerners working capital limit.

Plus, it allows for renegotiating a contract before the end of the season and absorbing the future cap hit this season. Savage did this last season also with someone, I cant remember who offhand. I was really impressed with how deft it was at the time, which is why I remember it.

I was counting the posts until someone got this most-important part of the equation right. This is for you, Captn.

It creeped in watching Terry Cousin getting worked over against the skins.

Put a good CB in, who can effectively cover in the nickle, and we may still win that game as rediculous as it sounds.

Money...can't just throw it around and make everything work...but it crept in thinking about Ty Law and other FAs that we didn't want to throw money at.

You see a game that could have flipped....in a game that we sorely needed.

Just thought I'd throw it out to see the opinion out there.

Lerner put a cap on spending. That cap is under the Salary cap. Food for thought.

keeping your own salary cap is a good idea...look a the cavs...they went out and maxed out their cap to get damon jones and larry hughes...and those weren't good moves....dont spend the money just because you have it...and phil has proven that he will attack the free agent market.

No, with the exception of LTBE incentives when they are manipulated properly.

Again...it was a case of solvency. The available pile of cash to run the business was used at that point...all of the money a owner spends on bonuses happen off season...when they aren't getting weekly infusions of cash from gate receipts...not sure how TV money is scheduled for distribution, but that probably happens mostly during the season as well. TV ads aren't paid for months in advance..

At any rate...it was a cash flow deal more than the team just won't spend what the league allows.

If some of the bonuses we had to pay to get various players was a bit smaller, we might have been able to sign another player or two.

It is just how it worked this year

Only thing I didn't like from Phil this year was trading a draft pick for Travis Daniels.... I still don't understand that move...

I guess it depends.. if you want them to spend the money just to spend it, then to me, that makes no sense.

On the other hand, if there was a guy that was out there, ready to go and could help us get over the hump.. Well, that's a horse of a different color..

So my question is, who do you have in mind that they should spend the money on?

Their philosophy was to bring in a lower tier, non starting player.

When we got rid of Bodden, very good move IMO, we were obviously thin. I had a very good feeling about McDonald and EW is the real deal and still improving but.....WOW....when Davin Holly goes down.....it's time to do something.

They brought in Cousin, Daniels and that cast of bottom of the roster also rans.

Ty Law....I have no clue if he still has legs that let him run but he was sitting out there and the reason we got from management was that we wouldn't meet his number. A one year, good size deal. Why? We had the cap room. We didn't have cash. MBNA money, Lerner money....well that's a stack of chips I'd like to have at the poker table of life.

It was the first time I'd heard that cash was any issue here.

There's a very good possibility it would have been a terrible move but I don't know that for sure.

This bugged me only a very little but I kept it back in the cobwebs. When I saw Cousin systematically targeted last Sunday it said...hey I'm still back there in the cobwebs...you feel like talkin' again!

Just threw it out there. In the vast and mountainous array of problems we now have it's still small. It just came back to light for me a few days ago.

The other option was to trade from a position of strength like TE/OL/QB to spike it with a starter and slide McD to nickle (which he would be great at) but I understand all the reasons not to do that as well.

Ahh Heldawg,, I see what you mean.. Ty Law,, I thought there were two problems with him,, Money for the expected productivity and (this I could be mistaken about) didn't Law want a 2 or more year deal?

So, if that's the case, I get it,, I understand why they would pass on him.

Wasn't there a chance we could get Leto Sheppard too.. I think that was a trade thing not just a signing issue. Not sure what if anything happened with that.

But I guess that's kinda looking backwards instead of forward,, is there someone out there that we could get RIGHT NOW that would help this team?

Someone brought up Simion Rice a couple of days ago.. Most of the responses to that thread were rather negative.

Is Law still available.. would that even help? I grant you, Cousins isn't exactly a star.. but maybe Daniels could grow... At least he's young enough. Is Holly expected to make a full recovery and be ready for next year?

Otherwise, I don't know of anyone else....

I don't know of anyone right now out there who could help either.

Ashton Youboty's name was floated for a while because the Jills were deep at CB. There were some others that I can't remember right now.

I think it is what it is at this point but it bugs me a teeny tiny bit when I see the Deadskins rack up about 150 and a TD Ralph Brown style on Cousin alone.

You aren't the only one thinking about Ty Law......Too bad every other team that's thought about him have passed.

There's probably a good reason for that.

So suddenly, Savage is no longer the GM Suddenly, Lerner is telling Savage how to manage the team

I'm certainly not saying that Savage is not the GM. Don't you remember the many times he's said he's at his spending limit for this year? That they don't have the money to bring in a FA?

There is one story that didn't gain traction earlier this year and that is the fact that some teams...RIGHT NOW...are more than $20M under the cap. There has been talk about putting in a floor where a team has to maintain a certain level of spending.

I'm sure we'll hear more about it in the offseason.

And no...no consipiracy theories here. Just thought it curious.

Here's an instance of a Cleveland team not spending and nary a peep about it.

If it were the Indians....

We are $8 million under the cap. What is the status of the other clubs?

How did the team finish 2007 as far as cap space?

And as far as being disappointed, would spending the $8 million have changed DA's performance, reduced the number of drops by BE, avoided Stallworth's injury, and any and all other offensive woes? I don't know if we could have spent more money to improve the offense - in fact, many would argue that we are overspending on this team...

Didn't catch that reference. I would say this is an NFL issue, and not just the Browns. For season ticket holders with most teams, I would agree with you - If the team is going to spend 5-15% less than agreed at the start of the season, shouldn't the fans get 5-15% of their ticket costs back?

No. Salary cap consists of bonuses and pay. The front office (Lerner) decides how much bonus money (cash up front) he wants to pay out a year. Savage used all that up extending contracts and/or signing players.

It would be a serious case of bad to spend the entire cap every year when a team doesn't have all the pieces it needs. We are NOT 1 player away from the Super Bowl. (reason why is not being argued here, coughDAcough)

In order to sign a player like Ty Law who wants multiple years, you would need to give him a signing bonus (at his age this is what he wants) worthy of the length. If he didn't want a signing bonus, he wold be signed already by someone.

i agree, spending money for the sake of spending it is pretty dumb, not when we can be set up for picking up a good FA and signing draft picks next year.

Only a complete and total FOOL would blow their whole wad just for the sake of not having unspent money.

There are loads of reasons for preserving space, and I can't think of a single VALID one for spending all of it.

Well....it is possible to get a player...so that would be valid....but it depends on who is out there and how it all shakes out.....but as I said earlier, I agree.....you don't walk in to a casino determined to spend all of your money.

I don't anyway.

What if we had more than $20M in cap space right now?

Wouldn't you think.....hey we could have signed free agents to help the team?

No, it wouldn't bother me at all because I understand that we do what we can and that there are limits.
I also understand that you don't bring people in just because you can... You do it because you NEED to get that person and in order for that need to be fit, they have to be an improvement over what you have -AND- they have to fit the teams budget. Limitations on spending is a key element of this league's dynamic.

If there isn't anything worth spending the money on, then there is ZERO point in spending the money.

Lastly, I'll reiterate for those watching at home:
