Source: Jurevicius to be deactivated for remainder of season By James Walker ESPN.com (Archive) Updated: October 29, 2008, 12:44 PM ET BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns receiver Joe Jurevicius will be out for the remainder of the 2008 season, a league source confirmed Wednesday. Browns coach Romeo Crennel said during his weekly press conference that the team is preparing to make an announcement on Jurevicius soon, and the coach hinted that it was "generally not good." The Browns have until the end of this week to take Jurevicius off the physically-unable-to-perform list or deactivate him for the season. Jurevicius had routine knee surgery in the offseason but contracted a staph infection that set back his timetable to return. "It's 99 percent sure that he is done for the season," the source said. Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. recently had a high-profile bout with staph two weeks ago that put Cleveland's issues with the infection to the forefront. Winslow was the sixth known Browns player to develop staph in the past few years. Jurevicius' case has been relatively low key. It is unknown if Jurevicius will retire or attempt a comeback next year. The 11-year veteran said this would be his final season, but he still has one year remaining on his contract. For his career, Jurevicius has 323 catches for 4,119 yards and 29 touchdowns. He also won a Super Bowl in 2002 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. James Walker covers the AFC North for ESPN.com. Link Hoped to have him back on the field. He really helped on 3rd down. May be his last season.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

What a crappy way to end your career... Seriously tho hopefully we can find a slot receiver who is more of a possession receiver in the mold of Joe J.
Go Browns!!

The oft-injured Joe should retire.
When he plays, he's good. The problem is that he can't be relied upon for 16 games, and that was before the Staph.
The reality is that he was only going to play a role on this team for the remainder of the year at best. While it's unfortunate, it's no real great loss.

Knowing the type of competitor Joe is I'm going to go out on the limb and say he'll be back next year. He won't want his career to end that way.. and we'll need a 3 or 4 next year. Why not take one more run at a SB with his favorite team.

A bad break for him, but not unexpected. I for one never expected him to do much for us this year.
He had a good career.

You make it sound as if the guy is soft and can't be counted on... you're so far off base, it's ridiculous. 16 games in 2007 & 2005. He only missed three in 2006 with broken ribs. Has only missed 26 total games in 11 years and 10 of that total came in a single season and 5 more came in the season that followed that.... and those were for a blown knee ligament and then back surgery respectively. Say whatever the hell you want, but those are light injuries... he was really hurt. Joe isn't of the oft-injured variety, and doesn't miss many games... and he IS missed by this team thus far, precisely for the role he was going to play. Sometimes Toad, you really just talk out of your backside.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Joe's the man. Wish he could have played his whole career as a Brown. Of course there were no Browns when he was drafted . . .

That is for the role that he used to play. I love Joe, he has been great for us. Did I expect him to contribute the same for us this year, no, that's why we got another reciever. Did I expect him to have a few key clutch catches, I was hoping.
What we are missing is Joe from last year and the year before. We're missing our tall, sure-handed wide reciever who runs a precise route and catches the ball. Was he going to be that guy for us this season, he even said so, no he wouldnt.
So yeah, I dunno, you're right htat he's very important, but did we expect him to produce the way he had been, I didn't. I was hoping Stallworth would bring a new element to the team, but not in the role of Joe, but just as impactful. So far.......not that much.

Awfully touchy there Prp.
In an 11 year career, he's played in all 16 games 3 times.
In an 11 year career, he's started double-digit games twice.
His injury history is very long and well-known. That is neither a slap to his face nor an overstatement. It's simply fact.

Which was my exact point

His injury history is extensive. That's the primary reason he became a 3rd down receiver.

I didn't say he wasn't going to be missed this year. I said he was only going to play a role for this team this year. Since he was going to retire, it's no great loss.

That's really too bad. While I didn't expect to see him this season, I know I still would've liked to. I hope he can make it out for another season, but I'm not holding my breath.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Sucks to hear, but I expected this all along, so it's not too disappointing.
You never heard one thing about his progress all season, which is a bad thing.
Hate to see it happen, as he said this probably would be his last season. Good luck, Joe. Glad that you finally were able to wear the Orange and Brown.

I'm surprised it came to this... It must've been one hell of an infection. I really hate losing him this way. We sure could have used him healthy this year. Regardless though, it's time to move on. Even if he does want to came back, a year is all we'd get. It's time to find a permanent solution for that spot. I wish him the all the best and am extremely happy he got to play for us for a while. I hope he has a full recovery.

Man, more than any drama that we have had to deal with, this issue upsets me the most. JJ was/is my favorite Browns Player.
I hope he finds the strength and desire for one more year in 2009.
JJ will be missed, not doubt.

You did sound somewhat like you were dissing the guy and mocking his career, but don't think you intentionally meant it to sound that way, or I could be wrong.
I have a hard time labeling JJ as oft injured, since that would be the same category as Stallworth, and compared to Stallworth, JJ is a warrior and in the long run I think JJ will also have been in the league longer, but JJ is what he is, a 3rd down receiver always has been, but a damn good one when he's played.
I always thought he was a true professional at his craft and wish more players carried themselves by his standards on and off the field. Good guy, and had a good, solid NFL career.
I wish him the best

11 x 16 = 176 - 34 = 142 / 11 = 12.9 games avg per year.
So unless you literally mean 'started' rather than played in then your comment about starting double digit games twice is false. And since he has pretty much always been the slot receiver, he wouldn't always 'start'.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

I stand by my comments that the two players the Browns are missing the most this year are Jurevicius and Tucker.
Their absence has been huge and this loss of JJ for the season and maybe career (while somewhat expected) is still HUGE.
Terrible, terrible news.

Many times the Less publisied player or the least talented reciever is the one who's missed the most.
JJ was the heart & guts of our offense, not that the others dont contribute, becuase it takes all of them it's a team game, but sometimes, there are those players that hold everything together & that was JJ. He made more third down plays & gave our offense more chances to score.
I dont care what other teams he played for or how many games he played for them, JJ is a Brown.....plan & simple a Cleveland Brown...were not only losing a solid reciever and our third down count on reciever.
hopefully JJ will heal up and come back for 1 more season.

If we had 53 JJs on this team we'd win the SuperBowl every year. Love players, people like him. I'm proud he was on our team. Great career, a champion. Good luck JJ in your future endeavors!

Agreed. The only similiarity between he and Stallworth are their perpetuity for being injured. Outside of that, JJ was a true pro and a good egg. He lost much of his career due to injuries, but it was a good one.
As for the misconception I was dissin' the cat, I'll be sure and lob soft compliments and flower words of adoration next time *L*

Florida, I don't know how else I could mean "started" when I typed "started" other than in a literal sense.
Two times in his career he started double-digit games in a season. He was reduced to that role over concerns about his ability to stay on the field for an entire season. His ability to catch a pass on 3rd down while being a big target made that an easier decision. When he came here, we needed him to be a starter. We started him and he wore down. He recovered after '06 so he started in '07. He again wore down due to injury and was going to be our 3rd down receiver. We don't know how far he was going to make it back before Staph got to him.
There's not much to debate here......

This sucks on so many levels.
I'm sure Joe wanted his last season to be a productive one for his life long favorite team.
We could really use his talents.
Whatever happens Joe, thanks for the memories. :: tips the hat ::

I would hope so, but he may not have anything left in his body. He clearly said he was done by seasons end last year. He was playing, but there wasn't anything left in the tank. His body has pretty much had enough.

Man, that really sucks Joe is my favorite Brown and one of the TRUE good guys out there. This sucks that it happened to him. I mean you have to like the guy who grew up a Browns fan and wanted to finish his career a Brown and have to sit out an entire season b/c of a damn infection. Well, hopefully he comes back next year and retires a Brown after a full season and hopefully a ring

Can't say I didn't see this coming, I really hope he changes his mind and comes back for one last year to honor his contract, which I believe has a year left. And I hope that sitting out this year inspires him to come back for another season and not let his career end with injury. But with the surgery and the staph, I would expect him to call it a career. Though I will go out on a PTI-esque limb here, and give the likelihood of his return about a 5% chance.

This damnable staph situation is really bringing me down. I want JJ to come back, but I doubt that he will, especially if he has to wrestle this all year. Could use him in the clutch with our standard third and a bundle our offense generates while we try to plow the middle pointlessly. If you be gone, JJ, thanks. Pimping for his return.

Thank you for bringing credibility back to the Browns.

I was peeking around the browns sideline with some binoculars, and who did i see but Joe Jurevicius walking around the sidelines in jeans and a browns shirt. This was right after Braylon's big drop and he was talking to Joe. Even after all that he is gone thru he wants to be part of the team. Maybe that means he will be here next year.

Seems JJ has come out and said he plans to return for 2009. I hope he can do it, but needing another procedure isn't encouraging.
Good Luck JJ.
Jurevicius: I'll be back in 2009 11.03.2008
Wide receiver Joe Jurevicius won't play in 2008 but said Monday he plans to return to the field in 2009.
"I'm here to let the city of Cleveland now that I'm not retiring," Jurevicius said. "I am going to come back and play football for my beloved Browns and my beloved city.
"I know I have a lot of gas left in the tank. I am walking off the football field with an orange helmet on my head and not with a pair of jeans on."
An 11-year veteran, Jurevicius said he's had six procedures on his knee since the 2007 season ended. He said he's "pretty far" from returning right now but will continue to work towards returning next season.
"Optimism-wise, I'm 110 percent that I'm playing football in 2009," he said.
Including postseason, Jurevicius has started 57 of 141 career games and played in three Super Bowls. He had a career season for Seattle's 2005 Super Bowl team, catching 55 passes and 10 touchdowns.
He signed with the Browns in March 2006 and was a valuable piece of the 2007 offense that became one of the most prolific offenses in team history.
"I tell people my knee hasn't fallen off yet," he said. "I'm walking around now. I will need another procedure done...probably in the next couple of weeks.
"But I will be back."
Stay tuned for more on Jurevicius and the Browns. JJ Article
