.......Or so says Bud Shaw

trick or treat!
Quote:

In a season of change, stumbling Browns have little choice but to give Quinn his chance

It doesn't matter how much blame Derek Anderson deserves for Sunday's watershed loss, whether he wears just the tar or the feathers, too.

He didn't drop a touchdown pass. He didn't get trampled by a rookie running back for 154 yards.

The arguments for him [anybody? anybody?] and against [more chants of "Brady, Brady"] were made meaningless by another division loss, this one a pathetic collapse shaking the season to its foundation, a loss that left only Josh Cribbs untainted.

It's time for Brady Quinn to ride in, even if he, too, might get his horse shot out from under him.

Unable to get the offense moving once Baltimore began to mount its comeback Sunday afternoon, Derek Anderson left Cleveland Browns Stadium with many fans once again calling for Brady Quinn to take over at quarterback.Any hesitation in making the move Monday should stem more from the challenge of a short week of preparation in advance of Denver on Thursday. It certainly shouldn't stem from any strongly held belief that the playoffs are still a reasonable goal with just a little more elbow grease and quality time together.
What Sunday made perfectly clear is that this coaching staff is hard pressed to hold its own from week to week and that the defense has one consistent playmaker in Shaun Rogers.

That's hardly all. Anderson's confidence appears to leak like the air out of a pierced balloon. Braylon Edwards isn't going to suddenly inherit Dante Lavelli's "Glue Fingers" nickname, nor Donte Stallworth Cal Ripken's "Iron Man."

The playoffs? Jim Mora's famous screech comes to mind right about now.

Quinn might not fare any better throwing to Syndric Steptoe and Steve Sanders instead of Joe Jurevicius and Stallworth either. But we're at the point where not finding out is counter-productive to two seasons, this one and next.

The offense with Anderson in charge (playing at home mostly with a lead) managed one first down in the final 21 minutes.

A defiant Anderson didn't want to slather Baltimore's defense with too much credit, saying, "They don't change in a phone booth." He, meanwhile, looked like he was trying to throw from inside one on Terrell Suggs' pick six.

Another Braylon Edwards' drop, a pass interference call on Kellen Winslow and field position concerns sabotaged drives. Just the same, teams with the swagger Anderson stakes claim to aren't so easily dissuaded.

Baltimore rookie Joe Flacco showed more. The Ravens ran the no-huddle often, looked more aggressive and didn't rattle down two touchdowns on the road.

Either the Browns don't trust Anderson to push the fast-forward button in an attempt to put defenses on their heels or it's dead against the coaching philosophy. Let's find out. Because Flacco outplayed Anderson, who wasn't the same after Edwards' muff behind the secondary.

Because the only consistency week to week is dysfunction. Without Cribbs Sunday, they might lose by three touchdowns instead of 37-27.

Because on a crucial drive, the best the Browns could do on second-and-six was a sideline throw good for three yards to Steptoe, who had nowhere to go.

Because they already know Anderson isn't Ben Roethlisberger or a healthy Carson Palmer.

Because they have reason to worry that he's not even Joe Flacco.

Because he starts ahead of a player they need to find out about.

Because the season just took a decidedly bad turn down a seriously dark alley.

As we get nearer and nearer to elimination, we get closer and closer to Quinn under center.

But I say: Not yet, not just yet.

It's too easy to point the finger at Anderson and hope that changing the QB will make things better not only now, but in the future.

The one thing that people don't want to accept is that the FO still see's enough in Anderson to stick with him because they think he's going to get better.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, is going to tell the fans that we've played top-5 defenses 5 out of the 8 games.

Anderson may or may not be the QB of the future, but over the last 5 weeks, he's played well enough to continue to get the benefit of the doubt from the FO.

I bet he's the QB against Denver.

Short week ..no Quinn..no way.
Now if DA implodes enough by himself , Quinn could see action vs Buffalo..9 days away. But I still doubt it..

I don't know how the Browns will play on a short week and having blown this game....I don't know if DA has a bad game if they'll make the switch the next week..

This season is over. I really dont give a rats ass who plays quarterback at this point. Quinn playing now would simple be a decision to appease the fan base that is fed up with the incompetence of Crennel and Anderson. Wake me up when both are gone.

Yes, give DA another chance.. against an absolutely awful pass defense.. so he can have another decent performance in his long line of up, then down, then WAY down again performances.. My guess is he will start, my guess is he will play fairly well for at least enough of the game to keep us in it and maybe even win it and my guess is that people will conclude that that buys him yet another week.... my guess is that Cutler will outplay him consistently and the Broncos will run the ball with some success... BE will drop a pass.. and everybody will have a ton of reasons to excuse his play and shift the focus of blame away from him... JMHO.

This sentence right here is the key to the entire article. This season is lost... over...done. Regardless of what the math says, we're toast. However, just "staying the course" could not only keep the rest of this season a mediocre disaster, it could spill over into next. Do we really want to have DA open the next season, only to discover (what some already know) that he still stinks, and hand Brady the reins with a couple losses to deal with?

We need to find out what to do with the QB position and we need to find out now. Brady needs to go into the game, not even because we know for certain that he'll be better, but because it's imperative to us next year that we find out as soon as possible.

Play Brady. It's time.

I find it intresting that we or maybe it's just me in Northwest Ohio, that Phil hasent said a word about yesterday.
Yes I know it's not always appropriate for the GM to lash out nor is that Phil's way of doing things, but normally you hear something about Phil.

I do hope he takes a good long look after this season and lets go of the unproductive, trades the ones who dont wanna be hear and trades the ones who are hear for themselves first.

we can do better and we deserve better. but thats also a broken record, I'm tired of hearing excuses for lack of results.

I say not yet. Anderson has been playing pretty damn good for the past 4 or 5 weeks. The loss yesterday was not his fault. If Edwards comes up with that catch then the game is sealed right there. Anderson came through for us, Edwards didn't. I can't defend that interception, but it should have never come to that...IMO Anderson played very well yesterday.

CRENNEL: ANDERSON OUR QUARTERBACK “AS OF RIGHT NOW”
Posted by Michael David Smith on November 3, 2008, 1:50 p.m.
Is the Brady Quinn era approaching in Cleveland?

Browns coach Romeo Crennel said today that starting quarterback Derek Anderson is still his starter, but hinted that Anderson might not be his starter much longer. When asked if Anderson was still Crennel’s starting quarterback, Crennel said, “Yes, as of right now.”

Browns fans chanted Quinn’s name during yesterday’s 37-27 loss to the Ravens, in which Anderson completed 17 of 33 passes for 219 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs returned the interception for a touchdown to seal the game.

Quinn, a 2007 first-round draft pick, is expected to become the Browns’ starter some day. With the Browns falling to 3-5 yesterday, it could be some day soon.

I think this means anderson is the QB until we're mathematically out of the hunt....and then maybe the switch will happen the following week.

Buckle your seatbelts boys and girls, we're going to have a bumpy ride the next 4-5 weeks.

Yes, I can see the improvement in DA...6 TDS to 1 INT in the past 4 weeks. If that is improvement I don't know what is....

da is not improving. We've just seen more of the same. Sometimes he's on and sometimes he's not. And when he's on, it seems to be only during the first half.

I'm done with da. I would have benched him before the Giants game.

I want to see Quinn play some meaningful game THIS year so we can see if we need to add QB to the need-list this offseason.

I say nobody cares if you say "not yet". Or at least not many.

I'm at the juncture that I don't care. RAC can ride the storm out with DA and we can say adios to both of them if that's how he chooses to play it. I don't care.........

He and Phil can use the same plan as San Diego did with the Rivers/Brees situation. They can use that as a shining example of just how brilliant they really are/were when and if Quinn lights it up. I don't care.

Long story short, Quinn came out of a pro style O. He is very smart. He has been here long enough to "know the system". He has plenty of arm to execute the playbook. So all of that crapola can be thrown out the window. It's not rocket science as some portray it.

Bottom line is they give him enough playing time and starts this year that we be better prepared to compete next year, or they don't. We either throw a first time starter into the mix next year without developing any chemistry with his weapons, or we see how that chemistry gels now to better evaluate things for next year. Or give him so little time this year that it is more of a token of prearidness for next year that doesn't make a hills worth of beans one way or the other.

Either they see DA as the answer or they don't. We can keep playing charades with these things and annylise them to death or we can look at it for what it is.

You either move forward by giving Quinn enough experience this year to better increase our odds of competing next year or you don't.

Stand pat or move on. Those are the choices.

Which will they do? I don't care.

Because they'll have to answer for it either way, not me........

Geez Toad, you're all over DA like you were with Droughns! Did DA buy you dinner or something?

IMO, DA will start against Denver due to the short week. I think he will play just well enough to keep his job. He may even play lights out. But, it will just be a matter of time until he completely drops the ball, which will cause many to call for Quinn, and will cause DA to have a good game, only to decline until people call for Quinn, which will cause DA to have a good game...and on...and on...and on.

I am now, and have been, on the bandwagon of "I don't care who plays QB, I just want to win." At this point, I don't believe DA is that guy. Is it Quinn? Is it Cribbs? Is it Pontbriand? I don't know and I don't care. I just want someone who can lead this team to victories on a consistent basis.

He always says "as of right now" or "at this time" or something like that. I don't know that it means anything, other than he doesn't like to answer questions with a single word sentence, so he adds to them to make them complete.

I actually agree with Shaw but I'd be willing to bet money Quinn doesn't start off the short Week. And I bet DA does better this week. It goes to his on/off/on/off nature which will only keep the conversation heated. It's like being the wife of a chronic alcoholic. Vasilating between total extreme's, doing just enough when good to make you think he's turning the corner but ultimately you're left whith only one predictable constant... constant unpredictablity.

I know it's not all DA's fault and a bunch of it does certainly lie on his #1 reciever's door step but this ain't about "fair". It doesn't matter if he's getting the raw the deal at this point. The season is not mathmatically lost but for all intents and purposes post season is not happening.

We need two things before this year is out. To know what we have in Brady Quinn and not just in mop-up duty. We need to see him 3 or 4 games, at least a few games where an apposing defense has the opportunity to game him against the previous week's tape. And we need to know if the new blood factor and the new leadership factor with Brady are really as important to the rest of the team as it appears the lack of it is. This team is't hanging together, they're falling apart. There isn't that Ray Lewis that says when down two TD's "look me in the eye if you don't believe". Is Brady that guy, I don't know. We don't have it now and we need to find out. Somebody has to step up and DA is just never going to be that guy. He's too easily rattled.

This is probably the best place to put this:

Browns have made it clear, this is not their year
By Terry Pluto

If you are a Browns fan, the 37-27 loss to Baltimore may be the worst game of this discouraging season.
A 27-13 lead at home in the third quarter.

Then ... nothing.

Then ... Baltimore scored the next 24 points.

Then ... the Browns dropped to 3-5.

Baltimore was missing three starters in the defensive backfield and star running back Willis McGahee. Derek Anderson plays his best at home in good weather. Those were the conditions Sunday at Browns Stadium.

Good teams just don't lose a game like this. In fact, average teams don't do it.

"We couldn't muster up enough energy to win the game," said Romeo Crennel.

Coach, not enough energy?

This is Baltimore. It's at home. It's a division game. It's a chance to get to 4-4 and be alive in the AFC North playoff race. The team had a week to prepare. They had Kellen Winslow back. They were facing a rookie quarterback who had only three touchdown passes all season.

And the Browns had a two-touchdown lead!

If that isn't a reason to be excited and finish the job at home, just when will it happen? Crennel's comment should raise some questions.

Why could the Browns win three of four games, including two on the road -- but not Sunday at home?

Why could the Browns focus during the Winslow sort-of-suspension mess, yet seem so fuzzy in the second half Sunday?

Why couldn't the Browns capitalize on Joshua Cribbs, who had a 92-yard touchdown return and nearly broke a few others. He consistently gave his team excellent field position.

Why not enough energy?

I don't get it.

After scoring a touchdown on a 7-yard pass from Anderson to Jason Wright to take that 27-13 lead in the middle of the third quarter, the Browns had a 3-and-out on offense. Make that four consecutive 3-and-outs.

Then a screen pass that was intercepted by Terrell Suggs for a 42-yard touchdown.

In their last six possessions, the Browns had one first down. Play-calling went stale, the quarterback went cold, the team didn't just lose its zest -- confidence disappeared.

Yes, the defense fell flat -- by far, their worst performance since the 28-10 opening loss to Dallas. But the offense was no help when help was needed.

In the fourth quarter, Anderson was 2-of-11 passing for 18 yards.

Yes, Braylon Edwards dropped what should have been a TD pass. But Edwards also made a TD catch when he took the ball out of the hands of a Baltimore defender. Some of Anderson's problems this season have been due to Edwards' drops, but not on this day.

The quarterback had a bad day marred by poor decisions when it meant the most.

Now, the Browns are 3-5. Even worse, they are 1-3 in the AFC North. That reeks of rebuilding, on a countdown until Brady Quinn starts. In fact, it would not be a bad idea to start the clock on Quinn now. If he doesn't start Thursday against Denver, it should be the following game at Buffalo.

With playoff dreams fading, the Browns need to find a clear picture of who should be the quarterback next season. That can only happen if Quinn plays, and plays a lot for the rest of the year.

I agree w/ the article. Time to get Quinn in there and see if he's the savior like many around here believe. I don't think this season is shot b/c of DA but it is shot. So, let's see what the rook has. Put him in coach!

... and another season gone to waste ...

... just when there was a glimmer of hope, we get worse ...

You know I supported Derek Anderson until this game and now I can no longer he is not the answer period he can't hit simple passes. Lets see what Quinn can do so we can see if we need to sign or draft a quarterback in the offseason

What's the difference who plays QB?
This team is in serious disorder. If you can't run, can't stop the run,you aren't going to win alot of games.
Pittsburgh is still the bully in this division.Balt.has rebuilt themselves into a pretty good team in the last two years.Without some major overhauling,we are not going to be able to beat either in the foreseeable future.
Four years into this regime,we've gone from the cellar of the AFCN,to barely better than the Bengals.Quite an accomplishment.
Unless we get moved to the AFCW,or the Big12,where everyone opens it up on offence and nobody plays defence,we will never win anything.
I know there are a thousand excuses why we are where we are.Excuses are fine, but it's production that matters.
Start DA,start Quinn, hell start Dorsey,it won't matter.Run the ball, stop the run, this team is ill equipped to do either.

I'll bet he is also,,

I've been a supporter of DA.. I've thought he could get the job done.....

I no longer have that confidence in him..

No, I don't think he was entirely to blame for all that ails the Browns.. he's a part of it, but not the whole thing.

I also want BE benched.. he needs a timeout to learn that dropping passes isn't the way to earn his money.

BE scares me,, he makes a TD catch over a defender,, literally steals the ball out of his hands or close to it.. then, he drops a pass in his hands that could have lead to the winning TD or at the very least a tying FG.. DA put that just where it was needed.

I know, I know. it's only one play.. but it's the one play that sticks out in my mind.. he makes that catch,, maybe we turn the D lose on the birds and they don't score again and we win..

then again, it could just be frustration building up in me... I don't know..

But yeah, I think a couple of changes need made..

I couldn't agree more but some around here think Quinn is the savior of this team and until he can show he's just another QB, there will be that mystique and 'what if'...

So, let's get him in there and see what the kid can do!

I think most everyone agrees with you here, probably Romeo included. If we had any legitimate option whatsoever at wide receiver, he'd probably be riding the pine. Unfortunately, if we sit BE and Stallworth stays busted, we're looking at WRs 1-3 of Steptoe, Cribbs and Sanders. That's not even a possibility if we want to win games.

Unforunately, I don't know any other way to get into Braylon's head that he needs to focus on every single play, even if he thinks the catch is money in the bank. A tough situation to be sure.

I think DA played well yesterday too, but if/when the FO determines this season is shot, get Quinn in there! Assuming it's shot as of now, get him in!

i still think DA can get the job done and i don't think yesterday's loss falls on him. i still see the improvement in DA past the stats and in yesterday's game, i saw that he started taking more control of his streakiness. he MADE himself get into rythmn with throws between 10-20 yards going 5-6 or 6-6 to score and stayed hot going into halftime and then the end of the 3rd quarter. out of his 33 attempts, i think he'd only really want back 3 passes and that's pretty good to me. that drop by BE...whew, really deflated everyone. we had them at 3rd and 7. the body language on DA said it all. "what more do i have to do? what more CAN i do?" he was done at that point.

on the screen play, i don't fault DA much and from what i've read on this board, i don't see many people who actually fault DA for that pick six. i read things like "he's consistently inconsistent" and "he's so up and down" but i don't see many instances of real blame because it was a terrible situation. that play was doomed from the snap. DA snaps the ball, the screen is setting up on the left, so he stares down the right. what is he going to do? if he actually passed to the right, he stared down his receiver. he allows the screen to develop but ngata comes straight through. staring ngata in the face with a second to decide, he can either throw it away for 4th down in browns territory, take the sack, or try to execute the screen. i watched that replay over and over and what i'll say is JW ran foward on that play instead of along the side. he saw suggs so he took steps foward to allow his blockers to shield him from suggs. don't know if it was fear or what but he was not where he was supposed to be. the ball want straight to suggs but the wright should've been there. that said, why was wright even in on that play? on a screen pass, who do you want in there? wright or harrison? maybe it was to give DA flexibility to change the play and have him pass protect but come on. harrison is the guy who would make people miss. not JW.

DA played a great game against a great defense. he didn't win the game but he played well enough to win us most games if the defense that was supposed to show up, did for us. this game was lost before it started because this team is not ready for success. something good happens and our guys strut like jackasses.

that said, it's almost time to see quinn. i think DA can be a great qb in the league but after the denver game (due to a short week), we should expect to see some sprinkling of quinn if not some starts. we need to see what we have in quinn and if he ends up being "the guy," i'll be glad to support him. not because i think he's better than DA but because, hopefully, it puts to end all this QB crap for at least 2-3 years. i am so sick of hearing all this talk about qbs but hey, it's cleveland.

and bud shaw? when is it not time to for quinn, to him? the guy needs to go away for a while.

ESPN reports that Brady Quinn will start at quarterback for the Browns Thursday against the Broncos.

Trey Wingo relayed the news on ESPN's Primetime; we're not sure where it came from. It's a short week to prepare, but Quinn gets the easiest matchup possible by facing the Broncos.

If that's true, they even found a way to screw this up. Why the hell do this on a short week?

On most things you post I'm in agreement with you but not on this.

I am not putting the blame of this season on Romeo or Anderson exclusively.
There is plenty to spread around on both the coaching staff and the players. But this the NFL and when you lose especially when you have the personnel to win then - the head coach and the QB get called out.

I have seen what Anderson brings to the table. Seen enough to evaluate him. He is a decent player. Romeo is decent head coach but both are not good enough.

I will stick to Anderson since Romeo is a separate topic. Anderson does not handle pressure well. He lacks mobility. He is streaky even when all is going well. Meaning he performs when given protection and when he has the tools around him (like most NFL QB's). But he lacks the ability to make others better. He does not exhibit leadership or supreme confidence. His biggest issue is consistency. Any QB on the roster of a NFL team can throw a ball. The difference makers can lead a team and play consistently.

Answer this if you will: When the cards were on the table, down 3 points with time to lead the team down the field did you have confidence in him to get it done? Tie or win the game. Is he a guy you would want in that situation continually?

If not then he is not the answer when you have a first rounder in his second year on the bench. Guys can improve no doubt look at Eli. Anderson may get better but his core skills are what we have seen. He rattles and makes poor decisions especially under pressure. The time has come to give Quinn his chance. He deserves a full opportunity. If you start him now then you can see what he has and evaluate his growth over what remains of this season.

This last game is not the dagger to end Anderson. The lose was certainly not his fault alone. It is though evidence and continuation of all the faults he has and has not corrected.

It is time to make the change.

because it's the best possible matchup we got on our schedule. if we can't run on the denver defense or pass on the champ bailey-less pass d, we need to be demoted to the UFL. if this is true, quinn should be able to succeed, even if stallworth is out again.

Anderson still in as starting QB for Browns
PA SportsTicker
Published: Monday, November 03, 2008

More
Despite more calls for backup Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson apparently will keep his job as the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback.

Cleveland coach Romeo Crennel said Monday that he is not planning a quarterback change, even with the Browns at 3-5 halfway through the season.

Anderson completed 17-of-33 passes for 219 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in Sunday's 37-27 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The interception was returned 42 yards by Terrell Suggs for a game-clinching touchdown with under three minutes remaining.

As the Browns walked off the field, fans at Cleveland Browns Stadium shouted, "Brady, Brady!" Crennel, whose own job could be on the line, attempted to deflect blame away from his struggling quarterback.

"It's deflating when they run the ball in for a touchdown," he said. "It's deflating when you don't make a catch in the open. It's deflating when you lose a game." Last season in his first year as a starter, Anderson led the Browns to a 10-6 record, passing for 3,787 yards and 29 touchdowns.

He was rewarded with a three-year, $24.5 million contract, but has struggled to find consistency this year as the NFL's 31st-ranked quarterback.

After Cleveland lost its first three games, Anderson may have saved his job by passing for 310 yards and two TDs in a 35-14 win over the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants in Week Six.

But the Browns have lost two of their last three games, twice missing chances to climb back to .500.

I think DA stays as the starter this week against Denver. JMHO.

He has been practicing with the team for a year and a half, if he isn't ready, even on a short week, then he is a waste of a roster spot. Denver's defense is bad and the game is in Cleveland. Our next game is on Monday night in Buffalo. I'd rather he start at home than on the road on Monday night.

well this article states the opposite to your aritcle

BEREA -- Browns quarterback Brady Quinn will start Thursday night against the Denver Broncos, a Browns spokesman said this afternoon. It will be Quinn's first start in the NFL.

Derek Anderson was benched after going 3-5 the first half of the season. Anderson is coming off a 37-27 loss to to the Baltimore Ravens in which he threw a costly interception at the end that thwarted any hopes of a comeback. The loss left the Browns at 1-3 in the division.
