We went into this season with the best laid plans at WR. We would have newly signed Dante Stallworth starting across from Braylon Edwards. JJ would be the 3rd down/slot guy.

On paper it looked great.

Unfortunately, Stallworth has thus far played like he's made out of paper, and JJ had numerous setbacks following surgery.

This left us with Braylon Edwards and a cast of not ready for prime time players.

To the best of my knowledge, there were still some veteran guys on the fre agent market worth a look or 2. Guys like a Troy Brown ...... Eddie Kennison .... Joe Horn ..... Keenan McCardell ..... Eric Moulds ..... or similar type players were available, and probably would have helped a WR corps suddenly in shambles.

Now we find ourselves in week 10 ..... and Stallworth has played in 1 ot 2 (?) games ....... JJ is gone for the year .... and we just resigned Steve Sanders to the active roster????? No offense (literally) to Sanders ...... but a developmental guy probably isn't what this team needs right now. We have that in Steptoe and Cribbs. What this team needs is a guy who knows how to play the game. We lost that when we lost both Stallworth and JJ ..... and it hasn't been replaced yet.

I'll grant you that in looking back, we should have brought someone in. That being said, I don't think it's Savage's fault that Stallworth has hardly played or that Joe J. is done for the year. Do you honestly think that if he knew it would play out this way, he wouldn't have signed someone? He expected Stallworth to be there every game and expected Joe J. to be back by now. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone brought in, but I'm pretty sure this situation wasn't part of the plan.

Hindsight is 20/20.

Could we have made a trade before the deadline or picked up another FA? Probably but there is no guarantee that these FAs would have panned out. We would then blame PS for his lack of vision.

We have BE, K2 and Steptoe/Cribbs/Sanders. Many teams would consider themselves lucky to have two guys like BE and K2.

I think PS has done a pretty good job and just has had an unlucky year this year. The Dante Stallworth signing was pretty lame though...

There is no way knowing Donte's injury history that anyone should have expected him to be there every game. The guy isn't exactly Favre-ian when it comes to playing through injuries.

That said, there was not a whole lot out there this past offseason. None of the WRs you mentioned in this thread are making an impact anywhere else either and the other "big" name WR free agent signings have flopped as well (Javon Walker, Jerry Porter).

You can't blame a GM when he players he signed get hurt...I mean sure Stallworth had a history but I figure we would at least get 12 games out of him

Go Browns!!

agreed to a certain extent. there is no way that Phil could have forseen Donte missing as many games as he did, but he also had to know he would probably miss a few games.

and I'm definitely not blaming him for signing Donte. He still might end up being the best free agent WR signing last year and we had to sign somebody.

I understand your frustration Ytown. But if our coaching staff knew how to adapt they would have made some adjustments to the injuries a long time ago. I know this team isn't very deep in a lot of positions but that's what the coach gets paid to do. As much as I hate to give credit to Belicheck look at what he did with Troy Brown as a corner and Mike Vrabel as a TE? You can point the finger all you want to Savage, but the reality is this team lacks depth and the coaching staff doesn't know how to adapt.

No I'm not putting all the blame on RAC, but when a player goes down due to injury it's the coaches who place the replacement in there and coach that player how to play. We all knew this team cannot endure many injuries as the only area we have much depth at all is on the Oline.

at this point, we're probably better off playing the receivers we have on the team. this allows us to give game experience to steptoe and possibly sanders. steptoe has been coming along and maybe he can be a decent 3rd or 4th receiver for us. same for sanders. with the season pretty much over, we might as well develop the young talent we have now as opposed to paying for an over-the-hill guy to be a quick patch.

I think you can blame Phil for the Stallworth failure. In the end, you have to rate overall performance and Stallworth has not achieved. And it's not like he has a freak injury like a broken leg - it's a quad injury! He took a chance on Stallworth being free of his typical injuries and lost. (He also took a chance that Shaun Rogers could play inspired football, and has been a winner so far).

PLUS - Stallworth stepped on Braylon's foot and knocked him out for several games!!! I'm not giving anyone a pass on the Stallworth signing.

How could you not Draft Travis Wilson in the third round? he proclaimed himself the best Wide Reciever in the Draft.

In as much as I don't like the situation, we're probably better off with the guys that have been around for the camps and know the plays. Sadly, we're a pass first team, with injured receivers. PS isn't exactly the luckiest guy.
