Or do we have any cards to play??
The move to Quinn would be one I think most of us assume is a permanent move...at least in the sense of 2 years or more.
With DA's roster bonus next year, one would think that would eliminate him as a back-up on this team.
DA still has value, but what are our chances of tapping that?? Do you think he can be added as a sweetener with a pick in a trade-up deal?? My initial feelings are that could work.....but that darn roster bonus could get in the way. Nothing says DA will work a new deal with us, and teams might think it simply cheaper to wait for us to cut him in March or April(whenever it is due)
What are your thoughts? How should we or how do you think this will all turn out??

i think that we are now in the Quinn era in cleveland...I don't see us turning back really, especially if Quinn shows that he is at least capable, consistent, and improving.
As for DA, I can't see us willing to pay him to be a backup or him willing to sit on the bench. Thus, I see us trading him along with a mid round pick for maybe a 2-3 rounder? Or a trade that involves an added player from either side.
I just can't see the browns and DA co-existing when we will have chosen to go one direction and him wanting to start
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

He may or may not want to work a new deal with us to be a backup.
But, he may be more willing to work a deal with another team to be their starter. Perhaps he makes less per year, but gets a bump up in guaranteed $$$.
Teams that might be shopping for a starting QB this offseason:
1. Miami - if they don't believe Pennington is the answer. 2. NYJ - hey, Favre has retired before. 3. Cincinatti - don't rule them out just because they are in the division. 4. KC - obviously. 5. Detroit - see above line. 6. Minnesota - DA is their type of QB...guy who likes to throw deep (since they have Berrian and Sidney Rice). Frerotte is playing okay now, but he is not the future. 7. Tampa - just including them because Gruden loves collecting QBs. 8. SF - not a Martz-type QB, but no guarantees on Martz still being there. 9. Seattle - depending on how bad Hasselbeck is really hurt.
That is 9 teams, but you never know how many others will decide to go in a new direction at QB.
of course, this is all a moot point if Quinn doesn't play well

I was screaming at the top of my lungs to let Dallas give us their low 1st and 3rd round picks for da so they could trade him to Miami (rumor was). I wanted a DB and LB with those picks. And then I'd bring in some vet QB backup to sit between Quinn and Dorsey.
BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO........
Savage had to support da and now is trade value is CRAP! Most of us saw this coming.

We need some flesh eating LB's. LB's that will POP anyone, that fight to get through blocks, and get to their destination and WRECK HAVOC on ANYONE in their way!!
Savage... FIND THEM!!!
I really wanna see Beau Bell more at MLB to see if he has that in him.

Did I say something to make you think we would still keep DA??
That won't happen unless Quinn breaks his neck in one of the next 8 games.
Again...how do we dispose of DA in a way we get something?
We don't need to moan about what could have been and talk about what we predicted months ago. Anybody can do that after the fact.
Now is the time to discuss how we can best salvage something.....if it can be?? I don't know...that's why I am posing the question.

Somebody will give up something for DA. Not what we would have gotten last offseason, but we gotta get him out of here and take what we can get. I know a LOT of Browns fans will think I'm crazy, but I still think we can get something for A.Davis. I think he's overrated like most, but I swear, a majority of the talking heads in the media I listen to STILL think he's a really solid player. I think there are teams that will want him. As w/ DA, I think we should take whatever we can get. Also, I'm losing hope for our team ever utilizing Wimbley correctly. I think a LOT of pro-defenses could. I wouldn't be against seeing what we could get for him. Of course I really don't take the time to look at contracts, roster bonuses, and cap ramifications. I wait for the geniuses on here to tell me. Wow, here we are discussing the off-season. The most exciting time for a modern Browns fan.

Actually, Thursday night might be the most exciting time for a modern Browns fan. It's the debut of the Quinn era! A town can dream for the future.

Are we talking strictly QB scenario?
Deal Anderson for the best possible deal. I have to believe some team would want him based on the '07 season and his ability to have a big game. Someone would make him a reclamation project. If Miami is stupid enough to pay a 2nd rounder for AJ Feeley and Daunte Culpepper, some other organization has to be enough of a sucker to, especially one looking for a quick fix (Minnesota, I'm looking at you!).
As far as other positions on this team...Winslow's the obvious one, especially given how the offense has played without him and the drafting/hopeful emergence of Rucker.
I'm wondering if we can make any player for player trades, such as DA or Winslow for proven defensive players or something to that nature.

Honestly I would try to trade DA and Winslow in a package deal and get a top 10 pick. You call me crazy but with Hieden, Rucker, and Dinkins I think we are a better team.
I figure we are going to draft in the top 15.. With the DA/Winslow pick I look at Beanie Wells or Rey Maualuga With our first round pick look at James Laurinaitis (Who could fall), Brian Cushing
2nd Round I look at Javon Ringer, Tyrell Sutton, or Ian Johnson
Hopefully we signed Albert Haynesworth which could make our defense pretty formidable.
Go Browns!!

DA has market value, no doubt. His showing last year, and on Monday night this year, shows he can play. He has it in him to play with anyone.
Luckily, head coaches are an arrogant bunch. I bet a lot would look at what DA has done in some games and think "I can be the one to make him one of the elite."
DA has shown enough glimpses to give him value. I think we can get a nice pick or two for him.

That is what I intended to talk about....DAs value since it seemed logical to me to be somewhat germane to the events of the last day or two.....but I can't dictate what you guys post or want to rap about.

OK : Your Crazy .. I could see a trade for K2 in the off season as well as DA., hey maybe even BE. .. Mr. Lerner needs to understand that Savage hasn't delivered all that he thought he had ... Still some serious holes , as some of us yaped about last off season ! That's why we wanted a trade for DA.

Maybe someone knows for sure.....but my recall is that DA's bonus is due in March......before the draft.
Anything we do has to be pre-draft.
To me, that complicates things....good legal work by DAs agent IMO...make the Browns pay up early or make them cut him loose before teams have a chance to scoop up college QBs, further limiting the options.
We won't have a very big window in which to get something done.

I think that not even Savage is predicting how this will play out, since it all depends on how Quinn plays.
If Quinn doesn't look good, Anderson isn't going anywhere, and it's open competition going into camp. If he looks bad, Anderson gets the leg up again. If he looks good, Anderson becomes trade-bait, as he does have 1st-day value.

I think a team like KC, Detroit, or Minny might be interested in him if they can't land a top QB in this coming draft. I really don't see us getting more then possibly a conditional 3rd rnd pick for him though. Team wise i think you could possibly see Winslow moved. I really think we need to focus on RG (due to Tucks age and health) a big time RB and Defense (another DLman , ILB, OLB and another CB).

Trading DA was universally desired - if the price was right. We might have heard rumors a-plenty, but that's all they were. Given that we were able to resign him to a club-friendly deal makes me think that the demand for DA just wasn't out there (or at least a market to sacrifice a first and third rounder).
If Quinn performs well, then we trade DA. If Quinn falls flat, I think Quinn's trade value might, in fact, be higher than DA's (given their pedigrees). If so, we get the most value from trading either of them, and fix more pressing matters, like LB.

I don't think they will do that. At the end of this season, management will know what they have with each of these guys, and make a clean break (if an appropriate trade offer is made).
I think the QB change is not due to a colossal failure on DA's part, but mediocre performance from a player with too much pressure on him. If Quinn is not the man (and we will have a good impression after 8 games), then DA is the QB of the future - he can be an adequate QB as the team upgrades the defense (which is in deep need of improvement). If the defense needs to improve as much as everyone seems to say, then we do not have the luxury of carrying two potential starting QBs.

I agree its way to early to be discussing how we get rid of DA this off season ... but man U are still just cracking me up ... Quote:
If he looks bad, Anderson gets the leg up again.
*LOL* ... and why is that??? ... it certainly can't be based on how DA played this year ... NO WAY ...
the BEST CASE scenario for DA is its a horse race next TC ..and thats HIGHLY UNLIKELY ...
my personal opinion ... we trade DA to Minni ... cause BQ may not play good the rest of this year .. but he will SHOW WHY he is going to be one of the best in the league for years to come even of he only looks OK ....
U guys think Brey has lots of drops now ... well that # could SKYROCKET with BQ at the helm .. he will HAVE MANY MORE CATCHABLE BALLS THROWN HIS WAY TO DROP ...
I have been saying for 2 years now ... U WILL SEE ... well U will all start to see Thursday ... not sure what your going to see ... but u will see something .. *LOL* ...

I couldn't disagree more man.
Quote:

So we're going to pass judgement on Quinn after only 8 starts?
If that happens, Lerner should fire Savage, then Crenell. It'd be suicide to judge a 2nd year QB who's never started an NFL game after only 8 starts.
Quote:
I think the QB change is not due to a colossal failure on DA's part, but mediocre performance from a player with too much pressure on him.
There could be some truth to that. However, I want to share a quote with you from Hank Fraley which was given in response to this benching:
Quote:
Fraley was asked if Anderson was the fall guy for the Browns, who were expected to contend for a playoff spot coming off a 10-6 season in 2007.
"That was the coaches' decision," he said. "Maybe they feel like he [Quinn] will bring a spark. It's tough because Derek is a great guy, a team leader and a captain. We just haven't been playing well around him. It's a shock to everybody on this team. It's their decision and we're going to have to live with it."
Courtesy of ESPN.
The only valid reason I can see for making this move is if they've watched a ton of film and have determined that a QB can make the plays despite all the problems that our receivers and offensive line has had.
So while knowing the problems we've had, we're going to make a FINAL judgement based on 8 games from what's essentially a rookie QB?
That won't happen, not for that reason.
Now that doesn't mean they won't trade Anderson for whatever they can get if Quinn looks good, but don't rule out both guys staying put next year. In order for that NOT to happen, Quinn needs to show some kind of spark. If he doesn't, Anderson doesn't go anywhere. Why? Because the most important thing is to find a QB.
Now I do know that they are making this move so that Quinn can get in the game against something Anderson hasn't seen hardly any of this year: A sorry defense. As I've noted before, of the 8 games we've played, Anderson has had to face a top-5 defense in FIVE of those eight starts. Quinn is getting a creampuff defense handed to him for his first start. If he falls on his face, there will be Hell to pay.
I hope he goes out and blows'em up, so that we can solve the question of who's our QB once and for all. However, I don't agree with this move, and I bet most of the coaches and players don't either.

So the rats D minus 75% of there secondary is still a top 5 D?? .. *LOL* .. OK .. if u believe that u are an idiot ... and since we know your not an idiot it must be your MO of MASTER OF SPIN ..... forget the FACTS or the TRUTH ... whatever makes my side look better ... lets go with it ... U would have fit right in with the Don when he was here ... SPIN SPIN SPIN ... and the Jags and Bungle D's really scare he beejesuse out of folks ... REAL SCARY D;s there ... if there not bonafide cream puffs ... there at the very least cream puf .... *L* ... DA has faced some stiff tests .... theres no denying that .... and I even agree he is getting hosed here .. his play has not warranted a benching .. but u won't see me making crap up that just isn't true (the rats being a top 5 D with 75% of there secondary out if just to outrageous for me .... *L*) .... to support my claims ... the funny part is ... the toughest or second toughest D he has faced statistically is the only game he played better than So - So in ALL YEAR ... he did nuttin against the cream puf to make U go ... damm .. there is hope for that boy ... Oh and one of his best friends on the team sticking up for him is just precious ... imagine that ... its like when the Sox traded Manny and ESPN ran with the fact that Ortiz didn't want him traded ... then it comes out in the team vote that it was 24 - 1 in favor of the trade ... I have NO CLUE how the locker room feels about this one .. but I am not going to go by what one of DA's best friends in the locker room says .. maybe we oughta just ask Biden how he feels about Obama and McCain and draw some conclusions on that ..

I wonder what the market will be for a player like DA? Is it ridiculous to think we could get a 1st-2nd rounder...or possibly a probowl caliber defensive player if we packaged a few picks with him?

Nah, you just ignore the pertinent information to forward your own agenda.
Quote:
I have NO CLUE how the locker room feels about this one
Then you aren't nearly as smart as I believe you to be.
Shoot B off another PM and ask him. I allready know the answer. You should as well.
Quote:
he did nuttin against the cream puf to make U go ... damm .. there is hope for that boy ...
Then he hammers the Giants and makes you go "hmmm.....there's hope for that boy." And he plays well enough to beat the Rats, then the defense folds up, and suddenly he's on the bench
Listen up and listen good: Pointing to the creampuffs while ignoring the good defenses, which represent the majority of our games, is stickin' your head in the sand.
Being on the fense about Anderson gives me the ability to objectively look at things. I thought you had that as well. You usually do. Hell, I'm not even sure that Anderson is a 50/50 bet at this point, but enough things were screwed up around him to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Suddenly, we've stopped being a patient franchise to one that just made a knee-jerk reaction. They are going out of their way to set up Quinn for success, which is admirable, except it comes at the cost of the QB they put their faith in at first.
People can say they've had enough of Anderson. You can make a case for that. Meanwhile, I can say I thought he had one more start in him to prove something. I can make a case for that. Ignoring the good defenses we've played by pointing at the bad ones is one of the WEAKEST arguements you've ever made.
The Rats busted up secondary shoulda made Anderson a better passer "Drops" Edwards doing what he does best. 'Member him? *L*
Hey, those bums in the Rats secondary were covering our own bums in Steptoe and Sanders. Suddenly, they aren't bums anymore, and you nor anyone else can expect a QB to succeed when our line can't block.
You're smart enough to know that a good pass rush makes bad corners look good. But suddenly, you conveniently forget that
Your boy is under the spotlight now. He's being given everything that Anderson had and gets to do it against a creampuff of a defense. If he doesn't have a good game, we aren't going to want to see the backlash. This move was one game too quick.

" This move was one game too quick."
And you could say it was 8 games too late. Was DA under so much duress he went 3 and out, 5 times ? The BE steal in the end zone made a wash out of the drop as far as I'm concerned. TD for TD. Plenty of blame to go around Toad but we haven't seen steady improvement in DA's game for quite some time. He seems lost at times and it's frustrating the heck out of us. Do you really think the "team" is going to say: Oh yea.. we all agree.. DA sucked and it's Brady time ? No player is going to admit that. He has size and arm power. Thats all he's shown so far. Give me a noodle arm Kosar type with smarts and accuracy over a erratic cannon arm any day. It's time.....

If Quinn goes out and stinks up the joint, yes. After 8 games we will know if the kid can handle the pro game. Will we know if he can be the savior? No, but we know that DA is not the savior, just a decent QB who can perform well when the spotlight is not on him.

If the right offer comes along - and we can clearly improve our defense, I think it would be foolish not to take it. I don't think the team has the luxury to take a chance on one of these two QBs being a superstar when we know they can perform okay - and we can upgrade other areas of the team.

That's debatable. If our defense continues to suck and play with smoke and mirrors, what good is the QB? Again - and I think we agree on this - if the right offer comes along for either Quinn or Anderson, we should take it, but getting rid of either of them just for the sake of getting rid of them is not a good move.

Agreed. When was the last time we did not have a QB debate entering a season???

I think a lot will depend on a very strong Junior QB class from college. Do they all stay in. If so then those teams desperately needing a starting QB will look to us for help. KC, Lions, Bengals if Palmer is damaged (of course inter Division - unless they give us silly compensation we don't think about it) SeaHawks, Dolphins? Who knows who thats just a quick thought about it. 49ers.
Anyway that is key is to get compensation.
We can see how talent can improve this team. We need to become an awesome D.
We need an Awesome young LB, ILB or OLB - pass rusher extraordinaire preferred but a Willis ILB I won't mind.
I think we need another kick butt Safety. Pool is a keeper its Jones I don't believe in. He's had a health history from day one.
DL and OL steals should never be passed up. I think we need a RT and or OG to be drafted and groomed.
We do get Holly back for some CB depth - another 2nd day guy?
Possibly a late round QB to groom as a backup.
If a stud RB is available its a good draft to get one again.
WRs??? No big investments and no Oklahoma ones...lol
Just give me somebody who can CATCH, Run good Routes and will block! This means he won't have speed - or if he does he will be small. I don't mind a good smurf WR.
JMHO - we are not far away...you know Savage will do what he can in FAgency.
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

" This move was one game too quick."
And you could say it was 8 games too late.
It would have been absolutely assinine to start Quinn after what Anderson did last year. However, setting that aside, it doesn't change the fact of where we are at this point. So my comment is based on what's actually happening right now, not what shoulda/coulda/woulda been.

The BE steal in the end zone made a wash out of the drop as far as I'm concerned. TD for TD.
We were on the Rats 28 when Edwards grabbed the pass. Did anyone notice that Anderson had a guy nearly in his face on that throw? He identified the 1-1 coverage and went with the mismatch. WR's are SUPPOSED to come down with that ball more times than not.
However, again, setting that aside, we were on their 28. If he doesn't catch that ball, we probably get points regardless.
so what about the drop? Someone will have to tell me where we were, but I know we weren't at their 28 We were on our own side of the field late in the game.
NO WAY those two plays cancel each other out. NO WAY.

Plenty of blame to go around Toad but we haven't seen steady improvement in DA's game for quite some time.
Comments like this frusterate the HELL out of me man. His play over the last 5 weeks WAS improved.
I get all the negatives and don't refute them. I also don't buy the timing of this move.
Here's what's happened: The FO has decided to make the move to Quinn. They are doing this now so that he can try and take advantage of a creampuff defense. I don't agree with it at all, not when we've still got an outside shot at the playoffs.
As far as the players go, we'll just have to wait until someone with actual proof speaks on it. I won't ask you to take my word for it, but I know the lay of the land here.

Spider, regarding the "8 games" thing, you and I won't get anywhere near to agreeing. There isn't a team in the entire NFL that would take a 1st round pick of a QB who's never started a game, then make a final-judgement on that player after only 8 starts. It's never happened. It never will. We'll just agree to disagree.

So what are you saying about the other defenses he will face? Buffalo, Philly, Tennessee, and Pittsburgh are rather challenging defenses, aren't they?
Let me draw you back into this moment......the one that's here right now, not a future moment that isn't here yet, hehe.
This move is made so that Quinn can get his first start........at home.........with the crowd being loud and crazy.........against a creampuff defense........so that he can get a little confidence moving forward.
So now let's go into the future where your thought resides......
If we'd have lost to the Broncos with Anderson, the season would have truly been over and we'd have switched to Quinn regardless. I'd have agreed with that move. We're doing it now so that when he faces those defenses, he'll have gotten his feet wet in a friendly environment.
I understand the reasons here, but I don't agree with'em.
Quote:
The players and coaches have not performed well enough to have much of a choice. They haven't put up, so they need to shut up.
While such a statement might drift away from the topic, I couldn't agree more

going with the premise that we trade anderson... i'm looking at what those teams might give up.. ariz- boldin wants out. det- package with winslow, braylon or a pick for CJ? nyj- could we pluck a OL from them? sf- no way singletary parts with willis. but he might not be there... kc- tamba hali and derrick johnson are excellent players. dunno if they fit here. min- lots of defensive players, OL mia- their website sucks. have a lot of young LBs really i think there should be a strong "seller's" market for qb this offseason. anderson and possibly vince young will likely be the top guys up for grabs. DA could be worth a lot to a team that just needs qb to make a run. jmh speculation

Warner is talking contract extension and they have Leinart. 'Zona is out.
Detroit just signed Culpepper to be their guy going into next year. That doesn't mean he's the long-term answer, but it eliminates them IMHO. They need talent everywhere, and won't be trading picks for a QB. Besides, Culpepper is only 31.
The Jets have Favre, and Clemens behind him. They aren't going to be interested.
The Niners are a real possibility. West coast guy going back to the west coast.
KC isn't going to trade Hali or Johnson. Those are two of the few talented players they have. However, they will be needing a QB, so they very well could be a player.
Pennington is playing lights out in the warm weather. They also have highly drafted kids behind him. They aren't a player.
Minny is the spot. Jackson is done and Frerotte is a stopgap. They would be the team, though the trade would probably be for a draft pick.
Shockingly, with the emergence of Orton, Chicago isn't. Who say THAT one coming?!?!
A team to keep a close eye on is the Seahawks. Hasselbeck is 33 and has back problems. That's also right around the corner from Anderson's old stomping grounds. They are the team to watch IMHO.

Trade our All Pro QB and our AllPro WR to Detroit for C. Johnson and maybe kick in DQ and Davis for someone that can actually tackle and tell the Rats we were just kidding when we let them move ahead of us and we'll take Ngata and they can have Kamerion.

I still worry about the bonus...all will have to take place before that...unless we plan to write that off for next year....and maybe we will.
I fear teams that might have interest might be will to toss the dice and let him go FA..
I suppose DA and his agent would be willing to waive the bonus clause in a new deal...just to get a deal with some team willing to take him....but right now, I just don't see a big advantage in them doing that.
Why is my question??
Either way he isn't going to get it....being cut by the Browns or working a early deal in a Browns trade.
May be the best we can do is pay the bonus, then work a deal as it gets closer to draft day.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

Then he hammers the Giants and makes you go "hmmm.....there's hope for that boy." And he plays well enough to beat the Rats, then the defense folds up, and suddenly he's on the bench
See, this argument continues to get to me.. DA played exactly the same as the defense against the Rats.. they both played about 2 1/2 quarters of decent football.. then they both stunk after that. So the defense gets blamed and DA gets a pass.. sorry it doesn't work. The game is 60 minutes long and DA can't take the 4th quarter off any more than the defense can.

They can't because of two factors:
We can afford to carry his salary Several teams will likely be interested

That'll never happen. The NFLPA would never let such a thing go down.
