During and after every Browns game, I come out hollering and griping about everything that we should have done and what we could have done. Even though I don't have half the knowledge of a Phil Savage, I still believe I have all the answers... (Anyone else feel like that?) So I decided it would be neat for us to play Phil Savage and fix the Cleveland Browns this off-season. If I were Phil Savage, here is how I would attempt to fix the Cleveland Browns in ONE off-season... Coaching: #1: I’m canning the entire coaching staff from top to bottom. There is a reason that we were the flavor of the month in the off-season. It’s because we have TALENT on this team… But it’s not being utilized at all. #2: I realize that in order for me to have a job, Bill Cowher is not a possibility. Even though I like the intensity that he brings to the game of football, he would want MY job. I am going to interview and hire a coach who I feel can effectively run a 4-3 defense. This coach needs the following characteristics… A. PROVEN head coaching experience. B. Ability to establish discipline on the team. C. NOT a players coach. Not necessarily a drill sergeant, but a guy who doesn’t coddle. Personnel: (Offensively) #1: I’m trading Braylon and DA for a first round pick. I would be willing to settle for a 2 and a 3 for them. For arguments sake, lets say Minnesota bites… #2: Im calling Kellen Winslow into the office and having a long chat about his commitment to this team. I am going to clearly explain to him what the direction of this team is. I will then tell him how important he is to this team. By the way, I’m extending his contract to a 4 year deal that includes 500K a year more in his base salary with playing time and reception incentives that will make it nice for him to perform at a high level. Also, I am going to break the news to him that he is no longer going to have to worry about drive blocking. From this point forward, he is our #3 slot receiver. This will extend his career by several years and give him the best chance to reach his incentives. Plus it will help out our running game drastically. #3: I’m trading my second round pick for Michael Bush. #4: I call Steve Heiden and Martin Rucker into my office and explain to them that there is going to be a competition for the vacant TE spot. Whichever one can run block and show that he can be counted on to move the chains will be named the starter. Defense : #1: I call Kamerion Wimbley into my office and explain to him that we are running a 4-3 and the only chance for him to play for this team is to gain 10-15 lbs and get re-used to putting his hand into the ground. We are going to a 4-3. #2: I let Corey Williams know that he is moving back to D-tackle. #3: I beg Willie Mcginest to retire. #4: I keep my safety core the same. #5: Im going to move Dqwell Jackson to OLB. #6: I’m having a competition between Leon Williams and Alex Hall for the other OLB spot. #7: Pick up a solid veteran corner. #8: Move McDonald BACK to nickel back. The Draft First round pick A: Middle Linebacker First Round Pick B: Pass Rushing D-end Third Round Pick: Run Blocking Offensive guard. Remainder of picks: Depth. Offensive Depth Chart: Obviously there are 12 guys on the field in this picture. That way I can show our FB, TE, and #3 Receiver. Defensive Depth Chart Offensive Philosophy: RUN THE BALL. We are in Cleveland. We are going to run the Ball, move the chains, throw short passes and run play action passes off of that. Our identity is RUNNING the ball 60% of the time. Throwing short 25% of the time. Play action 10% and the deep ball 5%. I’m putting an offense together to control the clock and score 20-30 points a game. Defensive Philosophy: Stop the run with our front 7 and RUSH the passer with our front four. We need to be able to get pressure with our 4 up front. Occasionally we will rush a 5th linebacker. Anyway, that’s way I would fix this team. What would you do?

I stopped reading after you said you're trading our 2nd round pick for Michael Bush.
First of all, we don't have a 2nd round pick.
Secondly, Bush is like a younger version of Lewis. Same kind of back.
Thirdly, we have a LOT more issues to worry about then finding a RB. I done with trading away picks.

I'm pretty sure we still have it. I think we traded our 3rd, 5th and 7th...

Damn you're right. I was thinking of this year's draft. EDIT: BTW, if you really do want a big, physical back, I'd much rather go after Brandon Jacobs. He's a FA in 2009, and you won't have to trade away picks to get him.

I don't really care that you stopped reading. I took a lot of time to post this to brew some discussion. If you don't want to participate, no problem.

I don't mind participating, I just got turned off when I saw you wanting to trade a 2nd for Michael Bush.
I don't want to give up draft picks, especially for someone who hasn't really done anything yet in the NFL.
You'd rather trade away your 2nd rounder than to go after Brandon Jacobs?

I didn't really look over the FA's. I would be happy with either, but I think Bush would come cheaper than Jacobs.
I wouldn't mind giving up a 2nd if we gained an extra 1st rounder from Minnesota.

In other words, another 'rebuilding' process. What you are talking about doing is a multi-year process (esp switching the D to a 4-3) and personally, I am tired of the constant rebuilding.

C I don't see it as re-building. I think the switch to a 4-3 would be very smooth. Our front 4 have all played in a 4-3. Our D can't possibly get any worse.

I agree. We have more good DL than LBs right now. So, why have more LBs on the field?
Also, Rogers and Corey Williams are better suited for the 4-3 anyway (and Rogers would be even more beastly in it)

Nah, Savage is safe.
If I were Savage, I'd be examining what veteran head coaches would appear to be a good fit for this team.

My thoughts...
Hire Brian Billick. Billick would work under Savage. He's has a Superbowl ring and a tenacity that will fire up the players.
1) Trade DA and Winslow. Not a package deal, but get as much as I can for each. I'm hoping for 2nd rounders for both. Supply and Demand for DA, talent for Winslow.
2) I prefer the 3-4 to the 4-3, but we brought in two guys who are at their best in a 4-3 (Rogers and Williams). What a combo those two would be in the middle with Shaun and Robaire Smith rotating in. Actually, Shaun or Robaire would likely be trade bait, most likely Robaire due to age.
3) Wimbley becomes an end, but Alex Hall remains at linebacker. His cover skills have apparently progressed well, and he adds a passrush element from the linebacker position.
4) DQ is in competition with Beau Bell for MLB. DQ's too slow to be a weakside linebacker. He should be fine at that position with two big guys clogging the middle in Rogers and Williams. But hopefully Bell is the player we expect him to be and he takes the job.
5) We don't know the FA class yet, but the FA class will include a linebacker, a safety and a defensive end.
6) Draft...I normally look past "Ohio State bias" but there are two guys I really covet from that team this year: Wells and Jenkins. Wells could be that back we need to replace an aging Lewis. Meanwhile, Jenkins would make our corner tandem look not too shabby with Wright and McDonald entering their third years. With our 3 2nd rounders we have room to manipulate the draft if we so desire.
2nd round: Linebacker, DE, safety or an offensive player of any kind. (If we go Jenkins in the first, this is where an RB could be had.)
4th round on out is best value. Hopefully OL is in there.
As for positions on defense.
D-Line: Wimbley Rogers Williams Undisclosed DE Linebackers: Hall Bell Undisclosed LB DB's: Wright Undisclosed Safety Pool McDonald Jenkins (nickel)

i'm not canning the entire coaching staff...
maybe romeo, i think outside of me playing the role of GM, that it would actually be considered.
i'm not trading braylon edwards.
anderson? i'll trade him if the price is right, i'm not expecting a 2nd round pick or anything, but i'm not giving him away for nothing.
i'm defiitely not switching to a 4-3.... it may seem like its not working, but i really think we are a few players away from being vry good. and i think once you have the 3-4 built, it is a beautiful thing, you can plug guys in here, and there and just like pittsburgh and new england, you can be successful each year. it's a tough defense to build, but we are already 4 years into this project, i don't want to quit now.
as far as the draft goes, i'm guessing we'll end up with a pick in the 10-15 range of the draft. with the holes we have on this team on both sides (LB, S, OL, WR, etc) we should still take the best player available outside of the position of quarterback, tight end. if there is a stud running back sitting there, you take him, otherwise i would rather see us take the best defensive player available. we need playmakers on that side of the ball.
i would also like to see a center drafted at some point in april, we need to start grooming someone for that spot, hank has done bang up job as the leader of the line, but he can be upgraded.
as far as our coaching staff goes, like i said, i think the real phil savage will consider a change, but its not a sure thing that romeo gets the boot.
chudzinski makes mistakes with his playcalling, but i believe he will grow into a fine playcaller. he stays.
i don't know a ton about mel tucker, but the defense stinks no matter who is coordinating them. there is no reason to make ANOTHER change unless we make a head coaching change and that guy has his own coordinator.
as far as kellen winslow goes, i think he, his agent, and phil savage need to sit down and iron out some things. talk about commitment, if he truly wants to stay. give him an extension if you feel he is fully commmited to cleveland, and the browns, otherwise, i would consider dealing him. the giants won the super bowl without shockey, the browns have won games this year without winslow. so as much as we love him, we have proven we can play without him, plus it is one of the few departments on this team that we are deep in.
as bad as we looked thursday, and last sunday, i honestly think if we can add some true playmakers at linebacker, the defense would actually be very good...
i like pool and jones, jones has no done a whole lot this year, but i really wonder if he maybe came back too early. pool has done an ok job. the position can be upgraded, but i think othe areas of this team are a little more imporant.
i like our cornerback tandem, they are young, and are going through their growing pains now, although i have no problem if we add another guy, there is nothing wrong with having depth at the CB position. it can kill your team if you don't have it.
we need another nickelback. plain and simple. it is a cancer on this team.
i think it is almost a must to add another wide receiver. a slot guy would be nice. i think it would be wrong to assume joe comes back and is ready for game 1 next season. especially if we are now commited to quinn.. with the way he can use his checkdowns, and see the whole field, and complete intermediate passes, you definitely will want a slot guy.
those are my thoughts, i don't want wholesale changes in personnel both on the sideline and on the field. i don't want wholesale changes in our philosophy.

I've seen talk about Malcolm Jenkins projecting to a safety. Regardless, the guy is good.
We need a DL, an ILB, at least one pass rushing OLB, and a CB to give this D a chance.
I'd hate to pick up any offense in the first round because of defensive needs, but damn, Michael Crabtree looks fun to have.....

that's why i say go best player available in the first round, you don't want to look back and miss on a guy that is great at a position that maybe you thought you were ok at... it is the steelers philosophy and its been working for them for years...
i would love to see jenkins drafted by the browns. i've heard the talks of him being transformed into a safety, i don't see why not, that guy can flat-out hit.
he's a playmaker
i also love mauluga from usc... there are pretty good defensive guys coming out this year.

I would love to have Aaron Curry out of Wake Forest in the first round to stick at ILB in the 3-4 and then Clint Sintim out of Virginia in round 2 to stick at OLB. I think both would, or should, start from day 1.

Clint Sintim plays OLB in Virginia's 3-4 and has done extremely well this year. That's why I think he could come in immediately and play, he is used to standing up on the outside of a 3-4.
As for Curry, I have only seen him play a couple times, and I liked what I saw, but most of my knowledge is second-hand. He plays OLB in a 4-3, but has excellent size (listed at 6-3, 247) and has been a playmaker in the games I watched. The consensus seems to be he could play any LB position. He seems to be rising on draft boards into a top 10 player.

I'll just comment on what I wouldn't do based on what you would do.
This is going to be unpoplular, but I think there is still hope for Edwards. If he could actually get his head out of his ass, he's easily a Top 10 receiver in the league ... easily. I don't think we give up on him just yet. I think that would be foolish. Anytime he is single covered, his separation is incredible. But he needs to be talked to in the offseason about his commitment to football. I'd like to see not one single hollywood interview this summer. Hole up in a room somewhere and only come out to practice. Get your mind right.
I contemplate trading Winslow. I put feelers out there, and if it makes sense for the team, then I pull the trigger. I have some reservations on whether this team can ever get to where it wants to go with both Winslow and Edwards on this team. They are both head cases and that is 1 too many. What I don't understand about Winslow is why his desire to win can't match his actions on the field. How many times a game is he being told where to line up? How many times this year has he had an offensive pass interference penalty? It's like he has a problem ... some type of addiction to doing stupid things. His heart is in the right place, but he can't control himself.
I do like the idea about making him the #3 slot guy. I believe there are many positives to that.
And if we do go into next year with both Winslow and Edwards, I think having Quinn as our starter will help manage these two guys. I don't see Quinn putting up with their incompetence.
I do not trade away anymore picks. No more.
I'm not canning the entire coaching staff. I try to find a new coach that is willing to keep Chud aboard. I also want my coach to bring in an experienced defensive coordinator. We need some experience in our coaching staff.
I do not make any concerted effort to move McDonald back to nickel. I leave him and Wright the starters with another year of experience under their belts. These guys have skills. The only way I put any effort into this is if a bigger, physical corner who can project to a #2 or #1 is there for us somehow. Otherwise, I leave these guys be. And here goes a rant: This really irks me about all the Browns boards. When we drafted Wright, he was our shutdown #1 corner. He has a couple of bad games and all we hear is he'll never be nothing than a #2. McDonald flashes his rookie year, and now all offsesaon he's better than Wright, and he's our shutdown corner. He has a couple of bad game and now we get comments like "he's just a solid nickel". Talk about fickle. These guys - both of them are good. I don't believe this needs to be a focus.
I let Jones walk. Get a young guy in here in the draft.
I make Alex Hall a starter.

i agree with you on a lot of what you said...
especially about draft picks. i unerstand the quinn situation, and the rogers and williams situation. no problems there at all.
but i think enough is enough, and you don't want to do that too much, i think we're 3/3 on those moves, but the minute you bust on one of those, all hell will break loose... fans, media, everyone will come down on you
so unless an absolute stud who is either approaching, or in the wee stages of his prime is offered, keep your picks in your pocket.

Rish, Edwards isn't going to change. He is what he is, and that's all he's ever going to be. We either accept that he's going to be an ego-maniacal, self-centered player, or we aren't. We either accept that he's going to drop easy catches while making tough ones, or we don't.
So, Savage is going to have to do the same. Edwards doesn't like Cleveland. Cleveland doesn't like him. He's not going to finish his career here. So we either use him until his contract expires in 2009 then let him go, sign him to a HUGE extension and accept what we have now is what we'll always get, or we trade him. Trying to make him into a leader, into a selfless player, into a sure-handed receiver, or into a team-player are pipe-dreams.

Please..if I'm Savage..then I'm getting the one impact ILB I need..actually I'd look for two....one real bonefide pass rusher, a gut that actually has that quality....one big corner.. Then if I want to add anything to the offense..one freaking # 2 WR...one RB and a RT/RG that is a road grater.

There's the rub - that is if your obvious lack of confidence in the human spirit is to be believed. I think we are a much worse team without Edwards ... much worse. Anytime you have someone that has to be game planned for, that's a huge positive. We can't just let him go without having a replacement, and I mean a real, bonafide #1 guy to replace him. I think Savage feels the same way and will keep him and put up with the negatives. I thought Edwards showed some promise last year in the maturity department, but he's taken some steps back this year - off the field and on. For me, it's just so hard to part with that kind of talent. We just have to have someone ready to step in if we make such a move. And I think that will prove to be difficult. By the way, I'm somewhat offended that he has not once stepped up this year and showed some accountability for his poor play. Instead he has hid from the media. I think that does speak volumes about him. I'm not happy with any of that. I just think we give him another opportunity to turn it around because quite franky, we have no one else.

Lost in the fight of BQ vs. DA, many failed to acknowledge that DA stood in there and took his lumps with the media week after week, and kept his cool the entire time. Off-the-field, he's probably the most poised QB we've had since our return...I don't know if that's an endorsement of DA or an indictment of our QB's.

You're being too gracious in your praise. Yes, DA did take his lumps and should be acknowledged for that. But he didn't exactly do it gracefully. Several times he told reporters "not to go there" when a question was uncomfortable.
But yes, in comparison to Edwards, it was like night and day.

Fire Romeo.
I would consider Ferentz, becuase I have a good relationship with him. Mariucci would be considered becuase I believe he could help develop brady.
The staff would be judged by me and the new head coach. some may stay, some may not.
I'm going to try to trade Da and Braylon in the offseason. I want the deal similar to what detroit got for Roy E Williams. For DA I prefer a late 1, but would consider a 2.
As far as personel, Willie, and all the backers besides Jackson need to go. Sean Jones also needs to leave.
If we trade Braylon I will try to find a receiver via free agency. not the draft. tehy take too long to develop, I want instant production from the new guy.
As far as the draft: defense, defense, defens. If we get an abudant of pick beanie wells may be considered. Jamasl is wearing down. we need a 2 headed monster.
I value K2 more so than Braylon with Quinn as starter. That's why he stays and Edwards may get traded.
Any Questions???
Thanks, have a nice day.
GO BROWNS.

Rish, I'm not stating my opinion in that regard with Edwards, simply stating the current situation. If I'm asked what I'd do, I'd simply force Edwards to play out his contract without giving him an extension. Frankly, he hasn't earned it or shown he deserves it. When his contract is up, I'd franchise tag him if he had a great '09 and either work out a new deal, or play him for the year then let him go.

Off-the-field, he's probably the most poised QB we've had since our return...I don't know if that's an endorsement of DA or an indictment of our QB's.
It's both.
He wasn't known for that coming out, but he's shown it since he's been here. Quinn had that rep coming out. In that regard, we have two QB's who are, at least on the surface, high-character guys. Anderson should receive accolades for how he's handled everything.......unlike Edwards, who has walked away from the media after bad games, who's gone on tirades on the sidelines, and who's not taken responsibility every time he's screwed the pooch.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

Several times he told reporters "not to go there" when a question was uncomfortable.
Uncomfortable or stupid?
As far as I've heard, when he gave those answers they were to very prickly questions such as 'do you think your teammate cost you your job?' I think the guy more than held his own off-the-field...especially given the undue flack he took. If anything we appear to have two level-headed QB's.

Another Ohio State player I left out was Laurinaitis. I think he might drop to the 2nd round, actually. He hasn't exactly lit it up this year.
The OSU homer in me is throwing these guys out there but really, I don't care what team they're from if they can play that position.
I can't stress the importance of a 3rd corner enough. A solid one. This will soon become a premium position in the NFL as more and more teams convert to a spread passing attack.

Oh man, I'd love to have Maleauga (spelling?). That guy is a terror.
"The Browns' defense is kicking mucho dupa."

I'm with you guys on Ray M.
I pimped Laurinaitis in this thread but all things considered he's a step slower, step smaller, step less powerful than Ray. No question whoever drafts him is going to be very, very lucky.
If he's there when we pick no doubt in my mind we go get him and make him a day one starter.

i think laurinaitis will be a very good football player in the nfl, i don't know if i would take him in round 1 though, mauluga looks more nfl ready. both guys are all over the field though. and ray is a step faster. and we've all seen the crap speed with our linebackers. absolute dog poo.

I've actually theorized that Little Animal will drop due to several reasons: His DL in front of him blows so he's gone invisible every now and then, and he lacks that "WOW!" speed that Ray posesses. He does have instinct though.
Still...I want that guy with the wow speed who can chase Ben around and make him pay for holding onto the ball, and most of all, an ILB who can blitz. That's something we sorely, sorely lack, and I'm amazed that the Shaun Rogers addition has not allowed our ILBs to run uncovered on blitzes. I thought that would be almost a sure thing with him being added.

If I'm Savage, I stay the course. Despite the popular trend here, I would not fire Romeo, and I wouldn't dump everyone and everything in sight.
Top needs: 1. Inside Linebacker 2. Running Back 3. Outside Linebacker 4. D-Line 5. Corner
I stay with the 3-4. I sign a good pass rushing OLB in FA. I get a good Nickel Corner. Not someone like Cousin, but a legit third corner.
Draft:
Round 1: Ray M. (not even going to try to spell it) from USC. The guy is a complete beast and is pefrect for the 3-4. If not available, go BPA at linebacker, running back, or D-Line. If there is a complete stud available, draft him.
Round 2: Best Running Back available. Unless we got him in the first, then go BPA linebacker or D-Line. Once again, if a stud has dropped, take him.
Round 4: BPA at whichever of the three we haven't gotten yet, unless someone has dropped.
Round 6: BPA

yeah, ohio state' d line has been very, very average this year. they had their moments, like against michigan state, but all year they haven't done anything to help. they were terrible in the sc game. they were a disappoinment in games against crap shools that we should have destroyed, see ohio, see troy.
laurinaitis is a sure tackler though, good speed, good instincts, good leadership, he will be a fine player in the nfl, no doubt.
but man, ray m is big time. i love watching him play. he's troy polamalu in the body of a linebacker.
