Memorable moment turns into a nightmare

Her son had never gone to a Browns game when his father was alive. Kathy Pataky's husband, Clifford, who died of cancer in March, would always say, "That's not the type of crowd you want to be in."

But last Thursday night was beautiful, an evening stolen from summer. "I bought tickets on a whim," Pataky said.

They were up in the cheap seats, section 502. The Browns have a no-alcohol section called the "Family Fun Zone." This wasn't it. Fun wasn't part of her package.

"My son Carter is 15 and had never been to a game. I hadn't been in 30 years," said Pataky, 50. "So I took Carter and his friend Shawn. We wanted to see Brady Quinn make his first start at quarterback. When I walked in, I was thinking, by rights, his father should have been here to take him to the game."

Pataky said she is a Cavaliers fan, but has also attended Indians games. The only unpleasantness was on the scoreboard when the Cavs or Tribe lost.

She was such a football rookie that she herded the boys into their seats at 6 p.m., more than two hours before kickoff of the Browns-Broncos game.

Pataky thought she knew what to expect. "I'm not a prude," she said. "I've been to concerts at The Q and the old Coliseum. I expected a certain amount of bad language. I didn't expect what happened, though."

The trouble started when two fans wearing Denver Broncos jerseys sat down in the row in front of her. Browns fans in the row behind her started cursing the Denver fans. Then they started throwing peanuts and other objects at them. Pataky was too scared to look closely at the missiles.

A third Denver fan arrived. The mean rain of spiteful objects increased. No one in her family was hit, but Pataky had had enough when one of the Denver group stood, turned toward the hecklers and shouted, "Why don't you throw it at my face instead of my back?"

"Some of those people looked ready to kill each other," Pataky said. "They all appeared to have been drinking. There was no security anywhere."

Finally, she found an older security guard who was staring intently at the game below him. "Shouldn't he be watching the crowd, the way security guys do at concerts? Besides, what's one guy going to do?" she said.

She asked to be moved. "I wanted to move because I was the one who had called security. I was told there were no other seats. The game was a sellout," she said.

So then she traipsed around the stadium with the boys, trying to find someone to help her. "I was crying," she said. "I kept saying I was afraid to go back to the seats we had. I felt threatened. I felt intimidated. I kept asking, 'Help us. Get us out of there.' I kept getting refusal after refusal."

Finally, a Browns official seated them in a VIP area. Pataky was so distraught she never found out his name.

The Browns did not return a call seeking comment.

Pataky and the boys missed Quinn's two touchdown passes, and he was the player they came to see. But they saw the Browns collapse in the fourth quarter and lose.

"Please don't tell me I can't ever go to another game," her son pleaded.

"We'll have better seats, but we'll go back," the mother said. "I can't break my son's heart."

This reminds me of part of the George Carlin skit on baseball vs. football:

In baseball, during the game, in the stands, there's kind of a picnic feeling. Emotions may run high or low, but there's not that much unpleasantness.

In football, during the game in the stands, you can be sure that at least twenty-seven times you were perfectly capable of taking the life of a fellow human being.

It's a shame that some people view an athletic stadium as a place where acting like an ass should somehow be excused or accepted.

I don't think you can say the average NFL fan's behavior is acceptable but.......it's very normal. And if only a few peanuts were thrown, which none hit this family, and a few insults were yelled....I don't see why her night was so ruined. She could have turned around and told the Browns fans to quit throwing crap because there were kids down there. And as far as the insults, I don't think I've ever been to a professional game of any kind where I didn't hear that stuff.

I'm not giving the fans a pass on what they did, but I've seen or heard about stuff a billion times worse.

I'm a Bears season ticket holder and I see and hear this same stuff ALL GAME. It's nothing new.

You could probably write a similar story about every sport, every team and every game played in 2008 so far. Weak.

ok, look, first of all, throwing things and swearing is wrong.

but the whole "we were scared, i was crying" thing is a little much, don't you think?

the kid said that he hopes this meant they couldn't ever go back, sounds like he was ok with the whole thing.

again, i'm not condoning what those idiots did. some good natured razzing is ok, but swearing and throwing things takes it to a whole new level.

but i just laugh at the whole part about being scared. i mean come on. it's a football game, it's not a gwar concert.

No it's not!!!!!!!! If it isn't acceptable it can't be normal and vice verse.....

There shouldn't be anything thrown!!!!!!!! Period!

Doesn't make it right and THIS is why I hesitated to open and reply to this thread.....

You're right.
It is weak.

You know why? Because it has become acceptable......and it shouldn't be. The moral compass is spinning in this damned country.....

That's what I was thinking too.

The chants of a-hole at the Donks fans don't surprise, that does happen at every sporting event that I've ever been to. And the missles being thrown were probably peanuts. And if she (the lady in the article) was in section 502, it was probably the same drunk-azz chick that was throwing peanuts at Steelers fans last season. She sits in 502.

Last season at the Bengals game, I sat behind six bengals fans. We did lots of yelling back and forth, finger pointing in the face and all. By the end of the 3rd quarter we were laughing at each other.

A 50 year old woman with 2 teenage kids? Turn around and confront a group of drunk obnoxious people who are throwing crap and trying to start crap with visiting fans?... is that what you would advise your mom or grandmom to do? Turn around and tell them to cut the crap?

So what you did then was just give the fans a pass.. since they aren't the absolute worst and it happens at every other game, then it's not a big deal.

That is a shame, even if it doesn't sound that bad....who am I to say what makes that woman feel threatened??

Bottom line is the Bronco fan was right to stand up and confront the punks throwing stuff.

I know some say we have the best fans in the league...from the way I have seen some people act.....that isn't the case.

I am lucky in my section...a pretty good group though last year some guy from the section over ripped a towel from a Steeler chick's hand and tossed it over the rail....about 6 of us went over to her defense.

Cut the crap for those of you who think it's cool.....it isn't.

Some of us are watching and aren't going to back you up when you start the lame wimping out and say you didn't do anything.

I hope they yank your seats and you never get to another game again.

I hope you are cuffed and hauled off, and it costs you $1000 and 80 hours of picking up trash on the side of the road..

Really.

I agree DC....I am ashamed other fans didn't stand up and beach slap those idiots.....most of the time all it takes is one person to stand up and ask them what the heck do they think they are doing....thay aren't that drunk.

Here was a Browns fan, run out of her own seats by other Browns fans....

Yep....we have the best fans my ass.

I am a bit surprised at that comment...where I come from, it is my job to protect women....I am old and fat now, but the attitude has never changed.

You don't cuss around women and children....old fashioned maybe....but the hey....what the heck can I say?

This is a topic that fires me up....it isn't a part of the game.

Funny...a few years ago my wife went with me to a Gators game in Gainesville....she is a Tennessee grad....one of the frat boys on the strip was saying stuff....he saw us walking the sidewalk and came out screaming some stuff like a frat boy will...I had my Gator gear on...she her Vols colors...I said that is my wife you are talking to....He said well, you married....and paused as I gave him a look like "You better not say the wrong thing"....he ended up saying "the enemy"....I could live with that.

Glad too...he was good sized...I might have had trouble with that one had he insulted my wife, but he would have to stand up and back it up...my wife if off limits in that sort of stuff.

j/c - kinda

I have been to many, many Browns games - most of them (probably 95%) in the pound. I have been to detroit for a Browns lions game, I've been to cincy for a Browns game, Chicago for a Browns game, and Indy for a game (not the browns). Also, at Phoenix, last year.

Now, I have fun running my mouth - absolutely. At Chicago, one of the best games I've been to, as far as fans......don't remember the year, but the Browns were up 2 scores with 2 or 4 minutes left........int for a touch down, fumble or another int - another Bears td, overtime, game over. The whole game, I was razzing the Bears fans around us, they were razzing me. I never once felt worried or scared or threatened. They were great, and gave as well as they took.

Ciny? Different story. Standing in line for a beer, saying nothing and doing nothing, some chick in front of me turns around and face rakes me and knocks my browns hat off. Instantly, the people (bengals fans) behind me form a circle surrounding me - basically daring me to do something. I don't know how many of them it would've taken to kick my butt, but I know how many they were willing to use (about 20 - thanks Ron White ). I did nothing but pick my hat up. I won't be in cincy any time soon.

Detroit. Great time.

Phoenix? Never met nicer home team fans than there.

In cleveland? I personally have been accosted by a BROWNS fan because I gave his retarded friend a high five after a Browns score. He shoved me, I looked at him, and next thing I know my butt was on the ground - shoved from behind. It was the cops. They took that Browns fan out, and I was thankful for that.

Bottom line? Have fun, drink or don't, talk crap to those fans that can talk crap back, but don't EVER start throwing things, and don't EVER cross the line of good sportsmanship. As a fan, those ARE the rules. At least they should be. People throwing stuff should be escorted right out, no questions asked.

Had I been sitting near this lady and her kids, I would've turned around and said knock it off, and then I would've gone to the nearest cop and said "watch these people".

Sorry guys, if fans of a visiting team can't come in and watch the game safely, or without having things thrown at them, or beer dumped on them, that is a MAJOR problem. Root, cheer, yell for your team for all your worth. Get physical with someone? You should be gone, and prosecuted. And yes, I consider throwing things as being physical. Kids around? Only makes it worse.

My daughter, only 7 at the time, went with us to the Cardinals game. She had a fantastic time. I would not take her to Browns stadium for a game until she's much, much older.

And don't get me wrong, I like to tailgate, I like to drink at the game, and before. There's just no reason for being obnoxious and throwing stuff. I've taken my son to games at Cleveland. The last one was when that jack a__ shoved me down. My son was about 15 at the time.

I've been to a browns bears game at cleveland. My sis in law is a big bears fan, she was wearing a bears jersey. We had stuff thrown at us from before the time the game started. Midway through the second quarter, she took her jersey off.

I was damn embarrassed by the fans behavior.

I'm not the biggest guy around, nor am I the smallest, but geez, why should it matter? Why should a fan be worried or afraind to wear a jersey?

We had a very similar experience there a handful of years ago after we knocked them out of the playoff hunt and also won't be going back. Oddly enough, after that game, a Browns fan had all his car windows bashed out. I don't like Bengals fans behavior.

I feel for this woman and the teenagers she took to the game...it would be hard to know what to do since you haven't really been to a game. The crying and making the boys miss the game while trying to find "help" is over the top, but some drama queens are just that way. I do hope the boys get to see another game.

I went to the game in Cincy last year. They weren't bad and I didn't even hear an a-hole chant. There were probably more Browns fans at the game then Bengals fans, so that may have made a difference. Definitely more Browns fans in the lot were I tailgated...

I used to proclaim that quite often...but the drunken, antisocial buffoons I've seen in CBS the last few years almost makes me question that.

It used to be that if a fan showed up in an opponent's jersey everyone would razz them...then toss them a beer (not throw one on them)...and then we'd all talk football.

What happened?

Who knows, I see more Browns fans fighting eachother than fans of the opposing team. Not that fighting fans of the opposing team is ok either. Its gotten ridiculous.

I wasn't sure what to write as a response.

You just said it for me.

I saw a Browns fan absolutely pummelling a Broncos fan a few sections over from us. It looked like security was afraid to get in the middle. 2 of them were there, looked to hap-heartedly try to break up the arguing, then once the guy started wailing away on the other one, they seemed to sit back- afraid to interject. As that was happening, so was the 93 yard hook up between Cutler and Royal. So when I looked back over, there were then 3 guards and they fnally were escorting them away.

The Dallas game was much worse. Fight right in front of us in our seats, fights all over the Pound below us, a HUGE scuffle going on in a parking lot as we walked back.

Not called for at all.

Not called for? Pathetic is what I would call it I've had a lot of fun ribbing fans of other teams - in Cleveland or at away games. People like what you described need to be prosecuted and spend a few months in jail.

Oh I mess with other fans, but it's all in good fun. Maybe talk a little smack, but nothing too serious.

The one fight that happened in the row in front of us at the Dallas game was ridiculous. There were a lot of Dallas fans at that game. In front of us just to my left was a family of Dallas fans, including a boy and a girl in the 9-12 year old range I'd say. A lot of Browns fans were cussing at either them or the people in front of them a lot. Right in front of those people were some Browns fans, and in front of them some Cowboy fans.

All of a sudden, the Cowboy fan got up, and it was a black man, and started flipping out, calling the Browns fan racist. Saying he's not going to sit here and take this. The Browns fan looked bewildered like he had no idea what the guy was talking about. The guy just kept going on and on, turning it into a race thing. Finally he left, saying he wasn't sitting here listening to racist comments. The family of Dallas fans turned to the Browns fan and basically had his back, stating they didnt' hear him say anything wrong.

Of course the Cowboy fan within a minute or so stormed right back up the steps and got in the guys face. Soon they're pushing and fighting. Security comes up and breaks it up, talks to the guy away from his seats, then allows him to return. Which I just couldn't figure out. Luckily, no more fighting went on.

Within a few minutes, I look down in the Pound and see fights breaking out down there. On the way back, Browns and Cowboy fans in the parking lot going at it, with probably a group of 15 people involved, and another 30 or more surrounding them. My brother, who had nothing to do with it whatsoever, is drunk and sprints over to get into the action.

My brother is one of those idiot people who drink way too much, then get completely stupid. It just is idiotic what people do at the games. If you can't drink and be responsible, stay home.

I agree with ya about not having real classy fans. I have friends that will never go to CBS b/c they like other teams and they know how the morons down there act. Seriously, it can be embarrassing and people think it's a free pass to get sloppy drunk and act like a fool. I sit in the pound and we have a lot of security so the fights are usually broken up pretty fast. Occasionally if something happens like an INT I will drop a cuss word or two, but if there is kids around I know better, or am not ripped to where I don't care about anyone around me.

I am sorry this lady had a rough time, but I do think she over did it too a little bit. I am not condoning the fans behavior b/c even my girls know not to throw things, but she had to know that football games are nothing like the CAVS or Tribe. She is acting like these people were throwing batteries at the Broncos fans, or she kept gettng hit or beer dumped on her. I just think she over reacted a little bit.

I'd say she overreacted, but if she felt threatened, she felt threatened...

The behavior of the fellow fans was completely uncalled for. To be honest I never understand why fans throw things at each other, and I don't think I ever will... Wouldn't have the patience to sit and listen to their poor reasoning for their actions.

I'm all for fans being fans, just don't pretend to be a fan when you use the game as an excuse to act like an ass. If you can't maintain the line of good sportsmanship, don't bother showing up.

Nope it's not part of the game, but it's part of life. People cuss all the time (many of the women I know out cuss the guys on a dailey basis) If the guys were throwing things at her, or even cussing at her I could understand her reaction. But they said nothing to her. She also never once mentioned the 15 year old boys being upset or scared. The IDIOTS who were throwing things should have been tossed, but this lady did over react.

As people who go to games regularly and are capable of defending ourselves, it's hard for us to say she overreacted. But think about her situation...

She hasn't been to a game in 30 years.
She's 50 and with her son who is 15 (which is old enough but still, it's her child).
She's got her sons friend, who she is responsible for.
There are a handful of drunk idiots about to fight with 70,000 people around, who knows how many might join in.
There's only one security guard visible and he's an old guy who is watching the game and not the crowd.
She couldn't find anybody else at the stadium to help her.
She wanted this to be a special thing for her son since his father was unable to be there..

I can see why this was very emotional for her and why she felt very scared and alone and threatened...

The last few times I've been to games I was embarrassed by our fans. People always talk about how fans were rowdier back in the day. They may have been louder and threw things on the field from time to time, but they weren't the obnoxious a-holes you see now, throwing beer on people walking to the game, etc. There were some jerks back then, but not near as many of them.

I sit in 503 and saw almost everything in 502. Upper 502 is the closest section to acting like the old pound of the 80's . Its where all the D-fense chants and singing comes from.

The Denver fans wern't use to the ahole chants, proly first time game goers just wearing Denver shirts for fun. I was surprised of the chants because I've never seen white fans saying that to black fans of visiting teams.

The main Denver fan was escorted out early 3rd period along with two Browns fans later.

The guards are always watching. Where I sit I can see em, plus video is everywhere.

You hit that nail on the head, Back in the days we had fun, nothing violent or distructive and didnt threaten or yell vulger, (well most of the time depends on the opponent...I.E. see Pittsburgh) but mostly it was all verble. Nothing ever got physical.

You guys didn't go to the same stadium I went to. Stabbing in the bathrooms, bloody beatings. Its alot more calmer now. I think the upscale prices do that.

The ahole chant goes way back to the late 70's thats not new.

I remember going to a game in the late 80's where I saw multiple fights and multiple people puking in their seats. And this was an Indians game in April. The fights involved only Indians fans.

I've gone to High School football games where I heard parents swearing at the head coach or the oppsing team for playing too rough/running up the score.

I've been to professional football games not involving a Cleveland team and all of this and more happens. This isn't a story about Cleveland, it's about sports fans in general. And I don't think it's a big deal. Is it embarrassing, rude and uncalled for? Yes but it's very much the standard at any sporting event.

I'm shocked this writer was shocked at this woman being shocked. Ugh...I hope that made sense.

I believe ya guys, but I guess I really didnt pay attention to that stuff, I know there was a few fights, nothing big, but never saw a sabbing in the bathroom with those horse troths.....they might as well just let us guy pee against the wall, LOL....

I do know a couple guys from our section Dog Pound one game against Cincinnati around the second quarter were pretty smoked up. They went slowly down the steps & out to get some munchies, well these two guy came back carring hot dog vendor boxes, the big old silver ones and were handing out hot dogs to everybody in the dog pound, my cousin & I grabbed about three each they were dancing tossing them behind thier back, yelling were all chanting there still smoked up.....about 10 minutes later the cops show up and take them away and were all applauding thier waving....people start tossing the hot dogs at the cops, were all cheering, smoked guys are daning man we laught still to this day, how they ever got those vendor boxs I'll never know......

wanted to add, man i loved municiple stadium....what a great place....

I'm not saying her story is hard to believe, it's common to see visiting fans harrassed for the entire game.

The part I don't believe is where she claims security wasn't too interested in helping out. I've seen security at CBS escort fans out for the T-shirt they were wearing, even though it was covered by outer gear. I also know every fan in every section is being monitored/watched by the big-brotherlike security cameras throughout the building. You can bet someone saw this incident going down, but they probably deemed it minor or had bigger fish to fry.

Still, it makes sense to move her and her children to another seat and that's where I would say they dropped the ball.
