I carry one of three... On my person, S&W 38 spl air wieght or a Colt 357 service special. In the car on road trips the Beretta FS 92 stainless 9mm & M1 90 Bennelli 12 gage auto.
Shot guns are excellent for home security and a good quality 38 special is a great, reliable, all around, safe, easy to use c-carry. And a good value and inexpesive to shoot, to boot. JMO.

I don't want a gun in my home because of kids being there. But I have to rethink this. The other day I came home from work and disarmed my alarm system. I was eating at the table, home by myself. The cops show up. I'm confused. I answer the door and they said a panic alarm went off from this address.
A panic alarm is if somebody forces me inside my home and tells me to shut off my alarm, I have a different code that shuts off the alarm, but still sends a silent alarm to the police.
I told them I had no idea what went wrong, I just turned off my alarm and am here eating. They left. After thinking about it, I must have entered the panic alarm code for some reason, it's real close to my regular code.
What bothers me though, and makes me think about buying a gun is, what if somebody really did force me inside, tied me up, duct tape over my mouth and the cops show up. All the criminal had to say is what I did, I don't know what went wrong officer. And the cops will go away and the robber, murderer etc. would go back and have his way with me.
I thought about calling the cops and asking them why didn't these two officers at least ask if they could come in and take a look around. A panic alarm did go off after all. If they can't protect me too well, I guess I will have to with a gun maybe.

Well, they can ask to come in and you can say just say, "no thanks, we're fine"...what good would that do if your really the bad guy? It happened to us once when we had dial up...apparently the thing would misdial 911 at times. The cops came and I answered the door. They asked if anyone called them...nope. Is everything okay...yep. Want us to come in and take a look around...no thanks. Then they asked about being online...yep. They explained the issue and left. Like you, I could have been the bad guy that day. But, how far do you wish them to go? Force themselves into your home? And, in your example, if you're tied up, you can't use your gun.

You make some good points Michelle that I didn't think about. Like you said they could have said no thanks and the cops still leave. But it was a panic alarm. I know they need a warrant to come into your home without permission, but what would the headlines look like?
Cops come to home of person that sets off panic alarm, cops leave without checking into it. Man dead. It's tricky.
I would have no problem with the cops coming into my home, even if it's for nothing. Gives me peace of mind. There should be a law for these type of situations. To protect myself and family and to protect the cops.

How old are your kids? You can start teaching them about firearms at an early age (I don't mean letting them have access to them or shooting them). Most importantly, teach them that if they ever see a firearm, leave the area immediately and tell the nearest adult.
Before introducing them to firearms, have them memorize the 4 rules of gun safety:
1) Every gun is always loaded
2) Never point a gun at something you don't wish to shoot
3) Keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot
4) Be sure of your target and everything behind it
Guns can be kept safely in the home with children. If the children are home alone, use a lockbox or gunsafe. As they mature, you won't have to worry about this as much. I found that Airsoft guns were a fantastic and safe way to introduce my son to firearms.

Very nice. Actually, having kids in the home are kinda why I own a firearm. To protect them if I am ever in a situation where someone tried to hurt them I would have some firepower if I never needed it. Well, honestly I owned the rifle a while before I even met my wife. She hates it and wanted me to get rid of it (still does), but I love to shoot just for fun and hammered home the fact that the rifle is quite safe. It's the person handling the rifle that's dangerous. I never keep it loaded. I never bring it out in front of the kids, never clean it in front of the kids (till they are teenagers and then it's every Friday night lol ), and when I do to go shoot I carry it in a bag. I do have a clip loaded and some ammo but it's locked up with a combo lock and the rifle has a trigger lock I can put on and is also locked up separate in my bedroom. When they are old enough I will introduce firearms to them and if it interests them I will teach them how to shoot. I am not a big hunter or anything, I just love to shoot for sport and have one if I ever need it.
Like I have said a few times before, I have had to challenge someone a couple of times and I was very scared when it happened. It's not a good feeling. targets are great,,another person is terrible.

I have 2 kids. Having guns in the house is of no concern to me. (no concern, as is: they know what guns can do, they know what dad has told them). They both grew up with guns in the house. My son loves to shoot, but he won't unless I'm with him - they still scare him to an extent. And honestly, they still scare me to an extent.
My daughter? Loves to watch me shoot. Even keeps score when I shoot skeet with friends.
Oh, jfan? Your 4 rules aren't just for kids. They are for 40 yr. olds like me, and 20 yr. olds, and 90 yr. olds.

I didn't mean to imply they were just for kids. No one has any business handling a firearm if these 4 rules aren't ingrained into their mind. I wouldn't let my closest friends or family near my guns if they couldn't state them.

Not saying you meant that or implied that at all - just affirming that owning a gun, handling a gun - we all need to know the harm they can cause.
Believe it or not, I generally don't go out deer hunting on the first day of the season because there are too many people out. I can't see all of them, they can't see every one else. The first day is the worst.
