Here too, Marty can create a connection to the past and reinstall Browns football, Marty would be a stop gap for two maybe three years until somebody on his staff would be ready to take over. I was sore on the idea at first but the more I think about it If Marty is healthy and ready for a challenge, why not, Marty still need a super bowl Apperance, what scares me is Marty Playoff record, but I guess I shouldnt worry about that until we get there....
I'm not indorcing Marty but he might be cheeper than Cowler and Marty has no connection with Pittsburgh, and he knows Browns football.

Marty would probably bring his son in also..I don't know..there might be a better person..I just want someone with experience ..but it's a no brainer he wants the job from the article.

I agree. Marty is not the answer. Sure, he's better than what we havve, but Marty never could win it all. I love Marty and the memories I have of him. However, I'd rather go another direction. I doubt Cowher comes here, though being a former Brown might make a difference.

I would say that it would make very little difference. His ties to Pittsburgh are far greater than any ties he may have once had to Cleveland.
I'd call it a complete non-factor.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

I would Love to have Cowher and I think Cowher is intrested BUT that is all moot till Feb
I will say this, if we can't get Cowher, then We absolutly must get Marty...look Marty is very important to this franchise for a few reasons.
1. Most of these Browns players "do not" know how to be true Browns...you look at Baltimore..that is where the Real Browns are. We don't have that because most of these players just simply "don't get it" atleast not enough of them with the Exception of Winslow and Cribbs, the rest of the team just simply doesn't get it. Winslow and especailly Cribbs really up their games against the Steelers but the rest of the team does not.
2. Marty will "Bring back" RThe Cleveland Browns Tradition that we lost when our team was stolen from us and moved to Baltimore(Cowher would do this too).
3. Look at what Marty did for San Diego, Kansas City, and even us when he was here. Marty's teams all have a few things in common:
Very well Disiplined teams Very well Coached teams They all play smart hard-nosed physical football
that is what Marty Brings...Cowher will too but getting Cowher is no gurantee where As i think getting Marty will not be that bad...Also they say Marty's Son is just like him..an intense winner who is young...5 years from Now when Marty retires, his son will be ready to follow in his dad's footsteps as a good winning intense coach just like his dad was.
I think Marty wants to win a SuperBowl badly, the guy is motivated, he will motivate this team to play well
I am all for Marty Schotenheimer if we cna't get Cowher, I would be more than happy with Marty I was mad when we fired him the 1st time
Bringing back the Browns Tradition starts with either Marty or Cowher...if your sick of losing, you will go with one of these 2 guys...there is no others....
If we bring in Marty, he will get his Championship here before he retires
Look how bad the Chargers are without him
Look how the cheifs have fell off since he left(Vermeil had 3 decent seasons there) But Marty had them in it every year he was there
I personally think Marty gets an unfair shale about the playoffs..he got them there, he did the best he could, he got stuck against Elway twice, and I do belive Tom Brady but im not sure...
The point is i'd be equally happy with either Marty or Cowher
and Best Belive, Marty "understands" the rivarly more then anyone else expcet Cowher and he will bring that rivarly back by beating the Steelers the 1st time we play them next year. Marty is much more aggrerssive Defensivly then any coach we have had here since he was here. He is a defensive Guru just like Cowher(where do you think Cowher lerned it from) they are mirror images of each other. Ben will not have all day in the pocket against a Marty coached Defense. Our Run d will not be putrid either Marty will shore up our Defense quikcly
Also a good thing about Marty is he will keep Rob Chudzinski, he was going to promote him in San Diego before he was unjustly fired anyways, I personally want to keep Chud, I think he has gotten unnecessary flack and Romeo has been tying his hands this year IMO

I agree with all of your points - except I would rank Marty slightly above chin.
What disfunctional franchise has Bill even sniffed? He inherited a successful team and it didn't skip a beat after he left. Not that I don't think there's a chance he'd be a good coach - I don't think he's w/o risk.
Echoing Attack - I'd rather have someone with a proven track record of turning around struggling teams and I'm not sure anyone on the list above can match his resume in that respect.
Take a risk and lose - and you're starting over again in 5 years.
We need someone who KNOWS what they are talking about and who people will listen to. Bring in a up-start who makes a couple of mistakes or a couple of things go the wrong way and he'll be done - in this town anyway...
There may be a better choice out there than Marty - just with higher risk, but he knows Cleveland and there's no one I can think of I'd be more optimistic about turning things around than him.

You forgot to add one thing Marty would bring here.....choking. What has Marty ever won? How many Super Bowl rings does he have? Isn't the goal to get a coach that can get us to the Super Bowl? Marty has never done that in all his years in coaching, let alone win it. Chud has had his hands tied by RAC? I almost fell of the floor laughing until I remembered that you ignore reality in your posts....like RAC was just a puppet in NE.

It's rather easy to explain, actualy. He feels the pressure so badly that he alters his game plan, makes poor decisions, etc. You've never heard of a coach choking? Check out Marty's run with us against Elway where he fell in love with the prevent defense and cost us appearances in the Super Bowl.

I'd love to have Marty back. Yeah maybe he can't win the big one but i'm not worried about that because you got to be able to make the playoffs to win the big one and this team can't even do that. Give Marty 3 or 4 years to get this team and organization winning consistently then we'll worry about the Superbowl. You gotta learn how to walk before you can run.

Romeo could go to a winning team, and seem like a genius...
We just need more talent, and with that talent.. We need more leaders... More guys that have swagger...

Here is the entire scoop on Marty.. actually, even with the holes in his record on Playoff losses,, his record is pretty impressive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marty_SchottenheimerWould I want him back in Cleveland.. Yeah, I would. This is the first team he ever was the HC of and in that short time, he took a talented but unmotivated team and made them winners between the ears first, then on the field. Exactly what we need. The only fly in the ointment, he's 65 years old now. and I'm not even sure thats really an issue. Just a number.

After nearly 10 years of this crap.......yeah, I'd be OK with just going to the playoffs every year. At least until Marty retired.
But it's a moot point. Marty isn't gonna coach again. Unless, possibly, it's as an assistant to his son at some point in the future. JMHO

Marty in San deigo had the game won against the Pats when Brady was picked with around two minutes to play...Then the DB fumbled. He played it safe in another game and their kicker missed a field goal which cost them the game. Byner fumbled away the ball as he was going in for the go ahead score.
How do you blame him for choking in these three games?
Everyone is going gaga over Cowher. In his 15 years he did get to the big game twice. I also remember the Steelers dominating many of those years only to blow it in the post season. He was also tagged with the title "Can't win the big one."
I'm not saying Marty is the answer, I just think the rap is BS.

Ya know, when he was booted out of SD a few years back, he didn't seem at all ready to give up coaching. So I wouldn't be so sure that he wouldn't come back to coaching under the right set of circumstances..
Maybe HC of the Browns with his former QB (kosar) as some kinda of special Offensive guru assistent or something like that.... LOL,, now that really would be something wouldn't it

I really don't want to bring in Ferentz and train another guy to be an NFL coach.
Ahhh...Ferentz is one of the guys Phil wanted to bring in.. From that Bank's article:
Kirk Ferentz -- Here's a scenario I'm hearing from a league source: If Browns general manager Phil Savage manages to keep his job, which is far from a certainty, he'll go hard after Ferentz as Crennel's replacement. After 10 years as Iowa's head coach, Ferentz might finally consider the time is right for a return to the NFL.

I would rather have Ferentz than Marty.
That isn't to say I think Ferentz is the guy, but I just don't think you can look to the past to fix the future.
Pulling out names of glory days gone by usually don't end up that way the second time around.
JMO.
I do know Savage and Ferentz have been linked in the past, so I would say that is a strong possibility if Savage remains on board.
It is going to be interesting to see how all of this times out.
I would guess a decision to move Romeo will happen as soon as the season is over..like maybe with-in a few days.
I don't know when Lerner is going to decide on Savage. If his mind is made up to make a switch, he might dump him at the same time as he does Romeo. I would think he almost has to do that before making a move at Cowher, if indeed he does.
I don't think it would be ethical to talk to Cowher about a job while you still have a guy in the position...really talk....not sending out feeler type stuff....and I don't think Cowher would want to do that either. It would give him a feeling as if he was responsible for Savages termination. Once Savage is out of the way, then he can go it to it with a clear mind.
It's going to be interesting to see how Lerner handles the decisions in front of him.
I think I would make the decision on Savage first because all subsequent moves are somewhat predicated on what is done there.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

Look at the over all success of Belichicks proteges.... Wiess at Notre Dame,, nothing to cheer about, Ferentz as Iowa,, again nothing to cheer about, Crennel with the Browns, nothing to cheer about,,,Saban,, a winner at LSU,, a loser in the NFL and now back in the college ranks, Mangini... Jury is out but may be good.
Sometimes looking forward isn't so good either!

Marty's a proven pro football coach. He's turned teams into winners even into the modern era (when not being fired by Dan Snyder after one season for going 8-8). I'd feel better going w/ him before taking a chance on ANYbody taking their first shot at head coach. I said it in another thread that I'd settle for him actually getting us into the playoffs and see how it goes before worrying about his past playoff records. He also has worked w/ Chud in the past and they might be able to iron things out and keep Chud, avoiding a possible shake up and loss of continuity. I know, I know, we have plenty of Chud haters in the house right now . . .
Of course if we happen to lose Savage, which I don't think will happen, and get a superior G.M., I think I'd have some faith in whoever they pick for head coach. I think Cowher is a pipe dream for G.M., but would LOVE for Randy to coax what's his name out of New England to be G.M.. . .

Hate to say this, but I'm going to be my usual, cynnical self and look at this thing from the standpoint of $$$$ and the "let's win now" mentality. Randy is a businessman. He has let his feelings be known that he's not one damned bit happy with the product on the field. He seems commited to turning this thing around and it's basicly been stated that money is no object. So I'm looking at it strictly from that perspective and the marketing perspective. Which every businessman looks at. There are really only two names that stick out on that list that may accomplish this task that you can sell to your fan base That's Marty and Cowher. I believe Randy feels his back is against the wall to the point that he's close to losing a great deal of his fan base. That desperate times call for desperate measures. If not, I feel he would have sat quietly in the background as he has been doing thus far. And we would have never heard those comments from Randy in the first place. And actually, from a business standpoint, either one of these guys are marketable commodities to our fan base. One brings back the nostalgia of winning days from long ago. One is in high demand and many fans feel he would go a long way in showing an urgency to win on the part of this franchise. Either way, I highly doubt you'd see anyone other than one of these two come in here unless Lerner finds it simply impossible to strike a deal with one of the two. JMHO BTW- Nice job Pdawg. Showing it was the players who choked, not Marty. Pretty basic, huh?

Any coach hired to run this franchise next year has as his first big task, to change the mentality of the players.
These guys don't know how to finish anything.. How many times this year have we been in a position to win only to have defeat snatched from the jaws of victory.
I'm pretty sure we have a core group of players to build something special around. Depth is an issue I would think.
But more important than any of that is the mental aspect. Either Marty or Cowher will instantly instill a different attitude.. a winning attitude into these players.
I can't think of any other HC with NFL experience that would be an easier sell to the fan base than either of those two guys.

Just clicking. We should be able to land either one of those two coaches (Cowher or Marty). Which means that we should be good hands. At least the Off Season won't be dull this year. The time between the end of the season and the start of FA is sooooooooo boring. This time it will be exciting .....but for the wrong reasons though (again)

One thing for sure,, you know that both Bill and Marty are winners.. there isn't any denying that. So if this team flonders under either of thier leadership, the problem is the players and that's that.
And both are blunt enough to tell the fans that. Both have the polish and poise to say it and both have the reputation to NOT be questioned when they say it.
They both have proven that they can lead a team and have winning seasons. If you look at thier history,, neither has had many losing seasons during the Head Coaching career.
Martys worst finish was 4-12 at SD in his second year.. he was rebuilding. and I guess that's to be expected.
In 14 years with the Steelers,, Cowher had two bad years of 6-10 and the rest were all better than that,., not to mention two superbowl appearances, one SB win and a number of Div Championships and one other AFC championship where he lost to NE...
Both have the creditials to be able to say something that people will have to listen too....
RAC had 5 SB Rings.... but as an assistent.. not as the Head Dude.. there is a difference. I'm not knocking his 5 rings.. there is something to be said for having them.. but as the Head Dude,, I have to believe they mean more when discussing credibility.
I think we see just how much difference there is now..

Just commenting....
Lerner knows the mood of the fan base is fed up.
He knows he is going to have to make a big splash with the coaching job to generate interest....think of the biggest splash you can, and that is where he is going to start, so from that perspective, Marty is going to be on that list as a top 2-3 candidate.
I would be shocked if whoever he hires is some unknown or possibly even first time guy.
He knows the team needs a shot of adrenaline fast.
Right now, I would say the top three who would help in that area would be Cowher,Schottenheimer, and Tressel.
Anybody else??
Note....I am not saying those are necessarily the best guys...I am just looking at it from an excitement standpoint.

Peen, I agree with you.. Lerners gotta make a splash... a Big Splash.
Right now, and I know you've seen it just on here, there are questions as to what Lerner has done to bring a winner here.. To me it's pretty obvious what he's attempted,, it's just not worked.. I think he had nothing but the best intentions.
But if he hires either Marty or Cowher, he's making it clear to anyone within earshot, that he wants a winner..
On a side note, Tressel would be another Davis. Solid College coach but in this case, Tressel doesn't even have the NFL cred that Davis did. I don't see that as being a big enough splash. But that's just my opinion.
I actually can't think of anyone but Marty or Cowher that would be a big enough splash.... Not one other name even remotely comes to mind...
Well, Shula or Noll would come to mind, but both are too old I would think.

I agree with Damanshot, Tress isn't a real option. Cowher or Marty, and in that order. Marty would be a nice story but the playoff monkey on his back would sink this city if and when we got back there again (seeing is how the city already has the same monkey). I suppose Marty would be better than rac. I wonder what really happened in San Diego. Did Marty have the Chargers on cruise control for last seasons deeper playoff run with Norv? And now that Norv has been steering the ship for 2 seasons, they are turning into a "Norv team".

B, come on man.
I have my same concerns about Marty that you do. But there's almost no question we'd be more competitive under him. There's almost no question he'd instill the fire in us when it comes to the Pittsburgh rivalry (there was a documentary on the Raiders/Chiefs rivalry and Marty basically brainwashed his guys to legitimately hate the Raiders). Afterall, didn't Marty get the best of Noll back in the day? Despite Tomlin's record vs. us, I don't think he totally "gets it" the way a Cowher or Marty would.
You can't defend RAC then slam Marty like that...Marty's had more head coaching success than RAC can even sneeze.
I don't have any tangible evidence for this, but maybe, just maybe "the universe needs to be set straight." As in Marty was unjustly fired back in the day and that's why he or us couldn't win since then.
That's way out there and I don't stand behind that theory since it's just throwing something against the wall hoping it sticks.

Pulling out names of glory days gone by usually don't end up that way the second time around.
Usually not.. it worked for the Skins though, they were absolutely horrible and had a revolving door of coaches, they brought Gibbs back to accomplish one goal, get the team back on track then hand it off.. which he did nicely.
And I think that would be Marty's objective here, not so much to race back and win the super bowl but get this franchise headed in the right direction, instill some discipline... essentially stabilize the whole listing ship, then hand it off to somebody else...

Ahh ammo,, maybe it's time for Marty to finally get that ring and what more fitting place to get it than with the team that first gave him a shot at being a HC.
Marty brings history, credibility and a fire and intensity that might do the trick for this team to be respectable again.

^ Not a bad idea.
Of course the following question has to be asked:
If we're only bringing back Marty to "right the ship", who replaces Marty once the ship is "righted"?
The successor has to be at least named behind the scenes to continue the plan. If it's just another nobody off the street, they'll tear it down and rebuild regardless of where we are so they can put their "stamp" on the team.
